them for years. as the demolition began, the former occupants could only watch. a fire yesterday afternoon gutted a portion of the building making all of it unsafe to occupy. the homeless residents were allowed to gather their belongings this morning. that's when we met mike ellerby. >> we've been livg here for two years. >> reporter: ellerby says he has a job but cannot afford rent. he lived in squaller but he says it was a community with house rules as you can see painted on this door. ellerby says nine families lived here. >> we didn't have a governor or mayor but we all helped each over. we all survived by helping each other. >> reporter: it was also a place of industry, recycling. which fire officials say led to the fire. >> there is evidence of people using metal cutting equipment to cut up the metal to recycle it. >> reporter: a fire sparked by a torch left the steel beams

weakened but that's only a part of what left the building dangerous. the recycling went beyond stripping wires from the wall. it included the building itself. >> we have seen where they have taken out the structural supporting to recycle. so we know that it's now even on top of being not safe it's even unsafer than it was. >> reporter: since those people have been living here for years, they essentially have become squaders. which gives them some right. the fire changed that leaving 50 people now scrambling to find shelter. in vallejo, ken pritchett, ktvu. the ntsb released hundreds of pages of their investigation to the san bruno explosion. ktvu is still going through them but so far we've found out that the pg & e director of integrity that half of its pipes were in the 1950s.

he is the giant fan beaten after the giant game against the dodgers. a cousin says now they are just waiting for stow to wake up and open his eyes. giant's ace pitcher tim lincecum has made a big pitch to help the injures paramedic and his family. he has written a $25,000 check for the bryan stow fund. lincecum calls the incident a senseless crime. while they've come to cheer hard, many tell us they don't believe an attack like the one that injured bryan stow is likely to happen here. >> the kings and the sharks, that's a new rivalry and hasn't gone as deep as the dodgers- giants one. >> there's always going to be somebody who ruins the party or something like that. but you know over all i think

shark fans are pretty well behaved. >> sharks officials say they have stepped up security for the play offs just in case. coming up, ktvu sports reporter fred inglis joins us live from the shark tank where he talked to players as the team is preparing for game one of their play off series. the family of a 15-year-old hit and run victim is asking for help tonight to cover the cost of their family's medical bills. shay shaw has been in a coma since the driver of a pickup truck hit her in san jose. police say they are still looking for that hit and run driver. now tomorrow night shaw's family and friends say they will hold a fundraiser at the three flames restaurant on meridian avenue. tickets are $40. in the south bay many families affected by drunk drivers spoke out today on the need for sober driving. santa clara attorney says drunk driving is at the very least a costly crime and at the most a deadly one. two mothers who lost sons to a

drunk driver made an emotional plea for people to think before they get behind the wheel after drinking. >> every morning we wake up and our children, they are not there. and it's really, really difficult to live like this as a parent. no parent should ever have to go through what we're going through. >> reporter: speakers said today drunk driving is completely preventable. a new controversial calls for limiting invitro fertilization to try to avoid expensive and multiple birthless. john fowler b i r thless -- births. john fowler is live now with the story. >> reporter: pardon the word, but this is all about eggs.

invitro fertilization doctors may only implant five eggs. limiting invitro fertilization to just one egg at a time could mean 16,000 fewer premies a year in the icu. saving $800 million and 800 little lives each year. >> it's important that we diminish the number of multiple gestation pregnancies that we're creating through these technologies. >> reporter: but dr. herbert told me that mothers may see that unfair. it's a very expensive process to only implant one egg.

but remember octomom. but there's ways to make sure this fertilization does not go wrong. three eggs for say a woman of about 42. but the idea of a single egg transfer regulation restriction has been tried in europe and recently in canada with a 90% reduction in multiple births. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. at this hour, cal state university sacramento students are occupying a campus building for a second straight day. they are protesting state budget cuts to education. the students say they want the university president to stop giving raises to administrators and to stop supporting oil companies. the university president can't take a public stand on state legislation say officials. california schools chief pressed lawmakers to extend taxes to keep classes from cuts

that he says would be devastated. >> everything from a shorter school year from two to three weeks. to totally dismantling programs across the board. art, music, science, sports. the democratic superintendent says if the the governor's tax extension fails, hundreds of teachers will lose their jobs. and joined by the howard jarvis administration the tea party wants state lawmakers to reject the governor's plan to tax extensions even if he agrees to the republican's reforms. the group says california does not need more taxes but needs to express its quote welfare state. just a reminder your taxes aren't due this year until monday april 18th.

take a step forward and chase what matters. a vallejo man says he is facing charges after taking cell phone video of an arrest near his home. it happened about 8:00 saturday night when lonel luchine used his cell phone to take pictures

attempted murder in a double stabbing. he was sentenced to 26 26 years in prison before he can go up for parol. home sales were up last month. the median home price is now at $360,000. but year over year prices are down over 5%. mostly due to the number of forclosed properties. mortgage rates edged up this week hovering just before 9%. the average interest rate on a 30 year fixed mortgage is now 4.1%. that is up from 4.87% the week before. stocks slid in early trading after the labor department reported an increase in unemployment claims but the markets recovered some what during the day. the dow jones was up 14 points

at the closing bell. the nasdaq ended up losing one point. it's time to find out now about our weather and whether we'll see more rain. let's go to bill with our forecast. >> i think we're dry for now. but lots of clouds out there. it hints at a chance for showers. there is a slight chance but i would not change my plans and i'm not changing my plans. i think we'll see plenty of clouds, light drizzle or sprinkle. but nothing that will slow your commute. we'll be warming warmer than what we're seeing right now. that's how it's going to stay. we got an interesting weather pattern with everything staying with a lot of clouds moving into the area. these are the highs from today. the observed highs. tomorrow's highs will be warmer. we're going to add five degrees to those that are three a degrees. so upper 60s. low 70s. despite clouds tomorrow, temperatures on your increase

for your friday. weekend looks good but just lots of clouds. 38 in santa rosa. 28 in napa. warmer than last night. that's because of the clouds they kind of blanketed the bay area. i think tomorrow morning it'll be mild to cool. but not as cold as it has been. increasing clouds tonight. cool or mild. depending on where you are. certainly mild along the coast. cool up in santa rosa. clouds move in, showers stay north. temperatures go into the 60less. 60s. this pattern stays with us. it'll show rain if there's any rain to be seen. then we get to friday morning and there it is right there. see. not a big deal. but if that drops maybe a degree south a few miles south. 30miles south we could see sprinkles throughout the santa rosa, napa and san helena. tonight at 10:00 you come back and we'll have the latest models we'll check it out.

district today unveiled a reproduction of a mural first created in 1791. the original mural is hidden from view inside mission dolores. the artists told us they decided to paint it at the original currently looks not how it looked in its prime. terminal two takes off, what airline passengers were treated to today as they boarded the first flight out of the newly renovated terminal at sfo.

play offs. great team and they have to get past their rivals from down south the l.a. kings. first greg inglis is live at the tank. why do you think it might be a different year for the sharks? >> mostly because they're balanced and also because they have a brand new goalie. as you can see we're at the fan fest which is still going strong. this is becoming an annual event. this is the 20th anniversary of the sharks. it's the 14th time they've been to the play offs but they've never yet reached the stanley cup finals. this year they think they have the goalie to do it. antiniemi signed a title after leaving chicago. last month nimie agreed to an extension with the the sharks and this is just the second year for the goalie. the late bloomer is the shark's player of the year because he's

simply has stolen victory from opponents with his strong effort in the net. even he said it took some time for nemo and his teammates to gel. >> maybe it took a little while early in the season. but i think getting some wins early was huge. and i think we got it great. >> everybody feels good. we have to do a job in front of him but you know if there's a mistake he will bail us out. >> we saw what he could do last year in the play offs. that way i know he's not going to disappoint anyone. >> is this your version of the party beard. >> i already started. facial hair does not come easy for me. so hopefully it gets really ugly by the end. couture the rookie one of seven shark players that have
