video and shows us what she saw. >> reporter: the body was found here on international boulevard. usually a crime that takes place during the night has very little witnesses. but this time, the surveillance cameras attached to this building captured it all. it captures the seconds leading up to a murder. you can clearly see a person walking down the street. simultaneously on a second camera there is video of a car making a u turn. that is the same car pulling into this shop. the driver getting out, he engaging the person on the street. then you see movement, possibly a scuffle, then the driver gets back into the car and takes off. >> i don't go places at night. not in oakland anymore. >> the bad people cause you not to trust good people sometimes. it's just bad. >> reporter: police tell us the victim 25-year-old dwanye taylor was likely shot to

death. and this video from the surveillance camera may be key in helping identify the suspect. coming up at 6:00, we're going to tell you more about the strategy police try to use to catch this suspect. san jose police are asking for help to track down the man's killer. this man 24-year-old jaime soth was involved in a killing last month. it happened on march 23rd at a strip mall on lundy avenue. 20-year-old jeffrey molanio was outside a pizza parlor with a group of friends when he was shot and killed. >> a second group of individuals arrived. some type of verbal altercation occurred. at one point an individual connected with soth produced a handgun and opened fire on the first group. sergeant drier says soth should be considered armed and dangerous. if you see him you are asked to call san jose police. coming up a little bit later at 5:15, a maritime

incident becomes a crime scene. why the boater on board this vessel was taken away in handcuffs. it's being called a day of silence. a nationwide protest by the gay rights supporters to publicly fight bullying and intimidation. there have been a number of events throughout the bay area today and ktvu's robert handa is at one that is going on right now. robert. >> reporter: we are at the billy d. frank center near downtown san somewhere jose where we've seen many people wearing these t-shirts to support the day of silence. the students will be marching

which will be followed by a rally. people put tape over their mouths to send a message. >> they don't feel comfortable or safe. >> i think it's very important for society in general to realize how many people are forced into silence because they are oppressed and marginalized for who they are. >> this is an effort to sort of promote the idea that everywhere gays are victims, we see a lot of people who oppose homo sexuality. >> reporter: the group americans for truth continue to demand that students and parents boycott the day of silence. supporters are not deterred. the defrank youth group plans to rally at the cesar park in half an hour and there's

another event scheduled for tomorrow. employees of apple are reaching out to young gays and lesbian telling them to hang in there. >> know that there's nothing wrong and there's people out there just like you. >> reporter: the video is part of the it gets better campaign. it features lesbian, gay, and transgender employees from apple telling how they overcame bullying. widespread contamination of meat. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler is here to explain all of the concern. >> it's almost grilling time. so this first of its kind study may startle some people. researchers bought 80 different types of poultry and meat. in more than half of the

samples they found staph. in half of those, the strand was a drug resistant. >> kind of frightening because i love chicken. i eat a lot of it. >> reporter: researchers say genetictists show the bacteria came from the animals themselves. possibly the use of antibiotics. leaving doctors few treatment options. >> you take risks every time you leave the house.

containing pharmacies. the pleasantton based company calls the ban arbitrary. the california court of appeals refuses to dismiss the case that is if it does both sides will meet in court in june. a similar lawsuit by phillip morris was thrown out. california's unemployment picture brightened a bit last month. the state's jobless rate slipped to 12% in march that is 1% lower than in february. and 4% lower than in march of 2010. here is how the jobless numbers broke down in the bay area. solano county has the highest unemployment rate at 12.3%. marin county has the lowest at 8.0. there's good news and bad news tonight on how much money americans are spending. the labor department says consumer prices were up. about half a percent in march. that's the same as in february. the bad news you paid more for

food, gasoline and rent. encouraging signs for the economy overshadowed the reports to spark a late rally on wall street. the consumer spending data we just mentioned excited investors as news that u.s. factories increased production for the ninth straight month. the dow jones ended the day at 56 points. the nasdaq gained four points. >> for the first time since last month's earthquake and tsunami, dressed in gears to protect them from any radiation, hundreds of police officers are sorting through the rubble. >> we will pay provisional compensation to be a small help for those who have been evacuated. >> also today the president of the utility that owns the fukushima plant announced his company will make initial

for the men who beat and nearly killed bryan stow. the two are latino, one with a mustache and tattoos on his neck. the other latino or white. short hair, hazel eyes and he might have tattoos on his shoulder. tonight bryan stow remains in a medically induced coma. a spokeswoman for the hospital says stow is now completely off of the medication that keeps him in a coma but that it's quote hard to know if he'll wake up. she says doctors are monitoring his condition and if his vital signs become compromised he may need to go back on the medication. things are tight tonight after a technical problem caused delays in san francisco. nummi says a signal malfunction at the church street station.

the problem was cleared up in about an hour. coming up at 5:30, ktvu cameras go out on the water today to take a closer look at the slow and steady work going on on the golden gate bridge. so imagine turning on the tv and seeing your expensive boat sitting on the sand at ocean beach while police handcuff the suspect. that is exactly what happened this morning as the boat's owner was watching the news on channel 2 from his home in vallejo. >> reporter: wolf owned the boat and named it dancing wolf. a friend called wolf this morning and told him someone had stole the boat. >> he hot wired it or did something. >> reporter: police contacted the man, he was either asleep or passed out. he tried to tell the officer he was simply waiting for the tide to come in so he could go back out to sea.

meanwhile the owner of the boat had given up his search temporarily and decided to watch some tv. >> we went home and waited and watching channel 2, and there's my boat. >> reporter: police would not identify the man but said they arrested him when it was learned he is a parolee with a no bail warrant. wolf says the manmade himself right at home on his boat. >> his shoes and sox are still on the boat. >> reporter: the scene drew a crowd of people. no one knows why the man allegedly stole the boat but there is one theory. yesterday was the man's birthday. >> happy birthday, he's at the hall of justice now right. >> reporter: wolf says he paid $350,000 for the boat which will get off the beach but may never get back on the water. craig debro, ktvu. and 16 cases could be appealed following allegations that the head pediatrician for the state county system

molested children. dr.kline testified in those cases and now his credibility is in question. kline has denied that he ever molested any children. a 33-year-old bret woodman has been accused of kidnapping and raping a teenage girl. daniel alfredo florez pretended to be a firefighter when he abducted the 17-year-old from her home back in october of 2005. he was put in a trunk, taken to a dark place and assaulted for six hours before being dumped nude on the side of the road. florez is expected to get life in prison when he is sentenced in june. it's designed to help restore areas damaged in 2009 by the 161-acre station fire. the largest wildfire in the ory foresters say for the next five

years they will plant 5,000 trees. that works out to about 300 trees per acre. a special effort was made today to connect with the homeless and lowincome people in west oakland. they put on a full service fair at the st. mary's center. clothing and sleeping bags were given out. workers also make sure that everybody is getting the money they are eligible for. people got to take a hot shower and haircut for potential job interviews. a 51-year-old crew member died while fighting a fire near the community of cocomo. 30 homes have gone up in flames. thousands of families have been

the treasury department handed out $513 million for first time homeowner credit for people who didn't quality. the credit was part of a $27 million program intended to spur the housing market between 2008 and 2010. some of those payments went to prison inmates, people under 18, and taxpayers who didn't even buy a home. the white house has created a tax calculator that shows you exactly how much of your individual tax dollars go to specific government programs. for a married couple making $50,000 a year the vast majority goes to social security and medicare with smaller sums for defense. anti tax groups though point out that 7% of our tax dollars

today we talked to one store owner who's business was hit about how it happened. rob roth tells us what she said and also what business owners are now considering pooling their money and what they want to buy, rob. >> reporter: well frank here on chestnut streets many people are out and about. some heading out to restaurants and bars. but throughout the marina's many small business are on alert. there have been half a dozen burglaries in the past week. >> this is the door he broke down. >> reporter: it appears someone climbed a fence and broke down the back door. you can still see splintered pieces. >> the door frame i guess you call it is all broken. >> reporter: the owner says the intruder rifled through the cabinet looking for money, there wasn't any. she says even so having someone breaking in is unnerving. >> i get a cold chill down my back and say, oh no. >> reporter: two doors down someone broke the screen

be aware of this spike in break- ins and take precautions. rob roth, ktvu. leland yee's office says he has received another fax with a racist comments and death threats. yee got similar messages when he criticized -- and when he demanded an investigation of sarah palin. heather it's called a grillage and it's bay long trek up 500 feet to the top of the tower ended up about five hours ago though it has not been bolted into place. it's designed to keep together the tower that is going to hold up the bridge.

the 500-ton grillage that was jacked up is like the seat of a stool sitting on top of a four four tower way. it keeps them together and makes sure the next piece is evenly distributed to the bay. it's a long slow process inching up from the barge below up one at a time. >> it's 500-tons of steel going over 500 feet in the air. so you don't want to generate momentum and get this swinging. >> reporter: when it's raised to the top of the tower next month a suspension cable will be placed through it. then the bridge will be finished. >> we have been over the last year placing all of the elements of the tower that's really going to hold the weight of this bridge. and we're finally at the top portion of that now. >> reporter: to give you an example of how pain staking a project this is, it is going to take 5,600 bolts to attach the

grillage to the tower. so it's no wonder why this bridge is not going to be complete until 2013. jim vargas, ktvu news. bart directors have approved the third stage of this extension. the bay area transportation department is going to pay for the extension. it's set to go online in seven years. california will share in a multi million dollars settlement for medicare over payments. the drug giant will pay $17.5 million to ten states for allegedly overcharging medicaid in cases where patients had other insurance. the justice department credits the cvs pharmacist for alerting authorities and blowing the whistle on the cvs. coming up later, the target

republicans have put on medicaid and other programs as the negligent budget battle begins. a spokesperson for lance armstrong today confirmed the report that the tour de france champion met last year with the doctor banned in italy on doping charges. the spokesperson says the two are friends and that armstrong has had no professional relationship with dr. michelle ferrari since 2004. he accused the italian law enforcement source of the report of spreading false rumors to justify his investigation into ferrari. dr.ferrari has been banned for life by the italian cycling federation. a smaller space for one of the nation's largest big box retailers. the fight to compete for the attention of shoppers who prefer not to step foot in a store. google's growth becomes an issue. the hit the high tech giant took today.

event which begins in just 13 days. some members of the congress are expressing concern tonight that environmental laws could be keeping border agents from doing their jobs. agents have to get permission to use vehicles and surveillance equipment on federally protected land along the border. this putts those agents at a disadvantage by making it easier for illegal immigrants to cross at those locations. >> people are dying, they are getting killed because we have these big gaping holes in our security and they are going into some of the most i nhospitable pieces of land and they are dying. >> the head of the border patrol told a congressional committee today his agency is working with other arms of the army to make sure that the border protection works in other parts of the area.
