good morning! welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, april 16th. saw a little fog crawling along the coast this morning but it may be rain that's moving in this weekend. let's get to your forecast with rosemary. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning to you! we have another pleasant day today, but by the end of the weekend, yes, the possibility of some rain. this morning we're waking up with partly cloudy skies. low clouds by the coast. high clouds overhead in some cases, and we're mild this morning. some of us in the 50s. for the afternoon low 60s to low 70s. not a bad day. will be mostly cloudy in some areas. we'll talk about the showers expected to arrive by late sunday, coming up. this morning volunteers will spread out across the bay area. their mission, a massive clean- up of parks and trails. ali rasmus is live now in berkeley with more on some of what is planned on this 14th annual earth day today. ali. >> reporter: claudine, we're in

east shore part, next to the berkeley marina, and taking a look here it's beautiful this morning. once the fog clears up, you can tell it will be a gorgeous day. it's calm and pristine out here. but about a couple hours from now, we can expect to see close to 300 volunteers. people out here rolling their sleeves up, picking up dirt and debris and a lot of trash and restoring some of the native plants. now, some of the trash here is not visible where we're standing. you can barely see in the distance some plastic bottles tossed in the brush here but that's just some of the thins that these volunteers will be working on today. and you're one of the agencies involved in this effort. it's part of the california state parks foundation earth day celebration. so tell me with 300 volunteers, that's a lot of people to coordinate, how will it work? what will they look for today. >> well, we've got registration starting at 8:30, the clean-up from 9 to 11. and we're going to give people gloves, plastic bags to go out,

and we've identified four sites on the shoreline to clean up, disbursing folks as best we can. and we go from 9 to 11. >> what kind of stuff ends up here? it looks nice, but when you get down into the sands and dirt, you see a lot more debris. >> right. there's a lot of bottle caps, water bottle caps, there's cigarette butts unfortunately, just lot of plastic debris, juice box containers, things like. that. >> a lot of stuff that may seem insignificant, were you telling me the wrappers on strauss, that stuff gets tossed out the window it's not going to amount but it does pile up. >> things that affect the wildlife and habitat here, unfortunately. >> these are tough times for all the parks and state ent tease here in the state. california parks foundation says they'll be facing $22 million in state budget cuts. east bay regional park is a different entity but you also really heavily rely on volunteers. >> yes, we do. and volunteers -- without

volunteers we couldn't do what we do. the park district we have nearly 13,000 annual volunteers, about 125,000 hours of service they contribute. so we couldn't do a lot of things without volunteers. >> so you definitely want people to head out here at 8:30, 9:00. >> right. >> thank you for talking to us this morning. >> thank you. >> this isn't the only park where in effort will be taking place. this is part of a statewide effort in honor of earth day and earth week coming up this week. there's a list of a dozen parks here in the bay area where you can help. among them -- if you show up and want to help out and volunteer, you got to be there around 8:30 this morning. but they're looking for people to help and clean up. reporting live, ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. there are several other earth day events today in the bay area. this weekends they're going to be two locations where you can

recycle electronic waste, including old tvs and computers. it's the fastest growing category of solid waste in the country. here are the dropoff locations. an indiana woman in town on vacation was killed after her car was hit by a train in palo alto. it happened at the intersection of alma and charleston road during yesterday evening's commute. transit authorities say the woman was in a rental car with her husband, stopped on the tracks, and stuck in traffic when a northbound rush-hour caltrain carrying some 400 passengers came barreling towards them. the husband was able to get out in time. the woman didn't make it. >> they were on the tracks. the gates were activated and the lights and bells were activated. they were on the track. can't go forward, can't go back. >> the couple described as in their mid-60s, were from indiana visiting relatives in palo alto. this was caltrain's sixth

fatality this year. a second fatal train accident happened yesterday in contra costa county. an amtrak train hit a man near loring eve in port costa at about 6:15 p.m. the train was on union pacific tracks. the victim has not been identified. an overnight native oakland police are investigating a shoot that left one man dead. around 2:00 this morning, officers responded to 73rd and holiday after receiving calls about a possible drunk driver. when they arrived on scene they found one man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. paramedics loaded man on to an ambulance but he died on his way to the hospital. opd says it appears the man was shot in his car near the mall. homicide detectives in oakland hope surveillance video will shed lit on the killing of a 25-year-old man. this was obtained exclusively by ktvu showing the man walking along international boulevard, yesterday morning. you can see a car does a u-turn

and approaches taylor. a short time later police found taylor on the ground with a possible gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a san francisco senator is again receiving racist and threatening fax messages. as you can see, the fax also threatens president obama. the office received similar fax messages earlier this year and last year, including one that showed an image of a noose. the state senator says he has reported the latest threat to authorities. >> can't deviate from your policies and programs. you've got to stay focused. and so that's what we're doing. we're not dismissing it, but we're not lotting it run our lives in the capitol, in my district office, at all. >> senator yee admits some of his legislation might be provoking those threatening messages. a possible hate crime near

sacramento has turned into a double homicide after an elderly man passed away. back on march 4th, two men were shot as they walked down the street in elk grove. one man died immediately after the shooting, the second man survived but passed away yesterday. police believe two men might have been targeted because of their turbans. no arrests have been made. a concord father is calling arnold schwarzenegger arrogant and insensitive. that's after the former governor made a snoring sound at a question about his slain son. on thursday a reporter questioned schwarzenegger about his last-minute decision to reduce the prison sentence for esteban nunez, the son of fabio nunez and was serving a 16-year sentence for his involvement in the 2008 stabbing death and of luis santos. governor schwarzenegger reduced the sentence to 7 years, but had refuse tedy comment on the decision and when pushed on the issue, the former governor made a sarcastic snoring sound. a group of native american

activists is waking up in a vallejo park in a symbolic effort to prove a peaceful point. they camped out at glen cove waterfront park overnight, hoping to stop a construction project. the developers want to turn the land into a public park and build a big park, lot. they say glen cove is a sacred burial ground for nature ancestors and are asking construction crews to stay away. good morning to you. another pleasant day in store, giving you a like between the sunshine and the clouds over the bay this morning. low clouds, hugging the coast. even a little fog to deal with around santa rosa. we are off to a mild start. look at this, all of us in the 50s. 50s for san francisco rosa and napa. concord and into oakland, low 50s. hayward, livermore, 53 to 56. from 8 to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday with mostly cloudy skies tilt. san francisco, redwood city also low 50s. san jose 55.

your radar going on over the north of us we've got just a few sprinkles. we've got some rain that will fall maybe down about sonoma this morning -- this afternoon, i should say. and there will be scattered showers, just a spritz, get you a little wet on the forehead. the rest of us with partly cloudy skies. if you're into the sunshine for the afternoon, head to areas around santa clara valley, san jose should be partly cloudy to mostly sunny. meanwhile, the north bay will continue with partly to mostly cloudy skies for today. we'll leave in a slight chance every sprinkle, similar to yesterday. the storm track passing a the north could bring us just a little bit of scattered cloud cover and some of those may be embedded with a little rain. it's not going to be much because notice through saturday, you doesn't see any blue or green on the screen there. afternoon highs for today, even above average in some cases. widespread upper 60s, low 70s for the area. 71 in santa rosa.

69 vallejo. 69 oakland. mid-60s in san francisco. if you're headed to the cherry blossom festival, it will be a nice day. winds should remain fairly light. 71 mountainview, 72 in san jose. by the coast afternoon breeze, not out of the question. it would be actually pretty typical for this time of year. your weekend forecast, scattered clouds, temperatures nice and mild. by tomorrow, we'll notices an increase in clouds late in the day and by sunday night into monday, scattered showers across the area. temperatures will cool as well. notice we fall back into the 60s tuesday, wednesday, partly cloudy skies so a cooler forecast in store for the first half of next week. we'll show you the future models and when we expect the rain to arrive coming up. a plan to extend bart into the silicon valley is moving forward. the board of directors approved the ebbs tension from free man to san jose. the 10-nile section will include two stations and could open by 2018. but that is all depend end on funding. bart's general manager is officially leaving her post

next week. an interim general manager has been chosen. coming up at 7:45, we'll talk to the bart president for the search for her replacement and what the change in leadership could mean for bart riders. ktvu has obtained new video from muni showing a bus driver kicking a family off a bus in san francisco. the video shows a woman taking a seat with the toddler in her arms. she then gets up, stopped the driver from leaving without her companion, carrying a stroller. the driver tellsments man he cannot hold the bus hostage and orders him off. muni says the incident should have never happened and as a result the transit agency fired the driver. >> the operator was only here for five months so they're in probation, and we're able to release them immediately. >> last week muni fired another driver for texting while driving a bus. that devastating storm that

hit arkansas and oklahoma continues to move across the country. we're going to look at the damage it has already left in its wake and tell you where system is headed next. bare bonds' personal trainer spent months in prison for refusing to testify and even though the trial is now over, some say greg and son's legal problems are not. and 880 and oakland, we're getting reports of carpet blocking two lanes in the southbound direction. that's near industrial parkway. so beware if you're head indeed that direction.

good morning to you. a live look from bay appoint, the widespread gray out there in some cases this morning. holding on to the 50s at this hour. deadly storms across the country are moving up towards the east coast today. but that is after leaving a

path of destruction behind in the south. reporter rick joins us live now from leaksville, mississippi to show us some damage. rick. >> reporter: mike, really rough couple days. 120 tornadoes reported across areas of the south over the last two days, and at this point, 16 fatalities. one of them here in leeksville, mississippi, a woman in her trailer on the other side of the road, and the entire trailer blew over to this side and disintegrated. then they found her body unfortunately, six injuries reported here. but you can see the destruction here, a home, garage completely leveled, all the contents of people's homes strewn throughout the area, and as you move through and see the backside of this, this is where that trailer landed. at least about 100 yards from where it initially was. so this community completely devastated around 50 structures

that were damaged, about 35 to 40 of those structures completely demolished. and the main street, all of the businesses, have been damaged as well. the grocery store, insurance agency, the car wash and the fire department has been completely damaged. so now they're out here beginning to clean up and get the power at least controlled, because all the power lines are down. and people are now finally out beginning to assess some of the damage. it will be a very long time ahead. they say it will take years before in community can completely recover from this damage. mike. >> all right. thank you. unbelievable damage out there. time now is 7:17. and a $1,000 reward is offered this morning, police trying to figure out who stole human hair from a san leandro store. they captured images four men breaking in yesterday morning. they ran off with armfuls of hair. the store sells high-end human air from india that's used for

weaves, wigs and extensions. >> it's a multimillion-dollar business. and it's a high-end specialty hair, and i'm the only one in the bay area here. >> police are confident the thieves will be caught thanks to the surveillance tape. the mayor in san jose favors a proposal to ban all melodies pens i.r.s. from the city. the idea was suggested by city council woman nancy pyle who says if they can't figure out how to regulate the dispensaries, the city should just regulate them altogether. tuesday the council is scheduled to discuss imposing a limit on the number of dispensaries in the city. the federal government has shut down three of the biggest online poker sites. authorities are accusing the operators of fraud and money laundering. they received yesterday so if you try to log on you'll see a

warning message from the justice department. the government wants to recover $3 billion from the companies and the sites executives could face jail time. >> i think it's ridiculous. it's just absurd. people should be able to play cards. >> you know that's not -- it's about they're not getting their money. that's what it is. >> gamblers who have money on their sights say their money has been frozen. the operators say they didn't violate any federal laws. barry bonds remains in legal limbo, waiting to find out if the government will retry him on the charges jurors were deadlocked on, the same for his friend greg anderson. some say he obstructed justices by refusing to testify in bonds' trial. that could lead the government to attempt a new case against him. but anderson's friend says any prosecution against anderson would be persecution. >> my hope and my prayer is -- in terms of the greatest good

new numbers show california's unemployment rate is now at its lowest level in a year and a half, at 12%. but things are mixened here in the bay area. we want to show you a county by county breakdown. marin continues the a the lowest rate at 8%.

the highest is in solano county, at 12.3%. that is the only bay area county with a jobless rate higher than the state average. altogether, the state added 156,000 jobs in the last six months. bringing the unemployment rate down from 12.1% in february. but that means 2.2 million californians are still without a job. >> temp agency jobs, just last for a little while. lot of people only hiring part time. no benefits. >> state employment officials say the key is perseverance. several job fairs are being organized across the bay area to help people looking for a job. president obama set the bar, boost the nation's economic recovery. and yesterday in oakland business leaders from across northern california joined city officials for a summit focused on doing just that. increasing the region's export economy. the u.s. department of commerce is educating small businesses

about expanding globably is key to doubling export business from one to two trillion dollars. >> we've got to get american companies understanding the opportunities overseas. only one percent of american companies export. >> the department of commerce says it u.s. exports currently support 10 million jobs in the united states. 700,000 here in california. almost a year after the bp oil disaster, the coast guard says most of louisiana's coastline is clean. 11 oil workers died in the explosion in the gulf of mexico on april 20, 2010. a lot of wildlife suffocated in the oil spill. tourism was hit hard. wokers were out yesterday removing remnants of tar balls on the island. the coast guard says it's a daily ritual but some residents question that. >> media here. you never see this many people in one area on this whole beach seven miles long, no. >> show you all -- go up to your knees if you walk in it.

nobody cleaning it. >> the coast guard says almost 92% of louisiana's shoreline is now clean. i know we've been talking about it, a chance of rain later this weekend. but as of this morning, rosemary, pretty nice morning out there for folks. >> we do have another enjoyable forecast in store for the saturday. as well as sunday but changes in store with high clouds overhead. closer tote coast a wall of low clouds, levels about 500 feet. those should burn away and we will be partly cloudy in most areas today. who will remain mostly cloudy? the north bay. wavers continue to ride over the ridge and bring just a possibility of maybe a sprinkle. so this morning at this hour, are you getting out? low 50s to mid-50s, depending on where you're at. 60 degrees, closer to the coast for lunchtime. mid-60s inland. and in for the afternoon, vitally warmer than yesterday. 73 in some cases for inland areas. closer to the coast will be sitting about 63 for san francisco. looking at your rain forecast,

we're dry today. notice the rain staying to the north. we're dry most of sunday, but there it is, it starts to approach the coast bit evening hours. it looks like sunday night into monday morning, most of us if not all of us will see scattered showers. monday morning the drive back to work could be soggy but we're drying out by monday and looking good into tuesday. up over the sierra snow levels will stay above pass levels, but scattered showers in the forecast. so 73 expected for today. low 70s tomorrow. and next week will be cooler, in the 60s by tuesday and wednesday. back to you. >> thank you. people are watching giants fan slow closely. why this weekend is so critical to his recovery. >> earth day is a week away but today hundreds of volunteers are getting a head start. we'll it will you how to help.

hundreds of people in the bay area will hit the trails today and they won't be there for a hike. what they're planning on doing and why. welcome back to mornings on 2. it's saturday, april 16th. in just about 90 minutes, volunteers will be doing their part to help make the bay area just a little bit cleaner. ktvu's ali rasmus is live in berkeley this morning with more on this early earth day

celebrations. ali. >> reporter: mike, we're in east shore park near the berkeley marina. and now that the fogs and clouds are letting up, there's a beautiful view of the san francisco skyline. but what really spoils this kinds of view is stuff like this. this is a piece of trash here in the grass. it looks looks a candy wrapper. and this is a kind of thing that about 300 volunteers are going to be out here later this morning combing through the grass, looking for stuff like this. it's all part of the california state park foundation eric day clean-up celebration. now, along with cleaning up trash, volunteers will be focused on re moving non-native plants and planting vegetation that is more native to this area. that's also one of things they'll be focusing on. again, 300 volunteers are expected to show up at the site a little later this morning. and help out. we spoke to a representative from east bay regional parking which is teaming up with the state parks foundation. she says that volunteer effort is very much needed.

>> volunteers who want to help can show up here at east shore park here in the berkeley marina. this isn't the only park that has this sorts of event going on. there's a lot of mosquitoes here as well. but there's about a half dozen parks here in the bay area that have similar efforts going on and we'll have the complete list of those parks on our website later this morning. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. and in area earth day related event, san francisco is giving away compost. that giveaway starts at 8:00 until noon. it's at four locations. that event is free, just bring a bucket. doctors say this is a critical weekend for the giants fan injured outside dodger

stadium last month. doctors stopped giving 42-year- old brian stowe the medicine keeping him in a medically induced coma. now the physicians are waiting to see if stowe will wake up. a hospital spokesman says the next few days will be crucial because it's possible the 42- year-old could stay in that coma. stowe is suffering from severe skull fracture. fund-raising efforts continue in honor of brian stowed today this restaurant in walnut creek will donate a portion of its proceeds to his recovery fund starting at lever in morning, until 11:00 tonight. union city police are looking for a 14-year-old boy who hasn't been seen since he left for scott wednesday morning. police say michael santos left home wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and green sneakers but never showed up at james logan high school. santos it 5-foot 2 and weighs about 110 pounds. police are warning drivers

about a series of car burglaries in the richmond district. police say there have been more than 100 burglaries and 35 stolen cars in the last 45 days. according to police, the thieves have been targeting late 90s vintage vehicles. a recent spike in break-ins has shop owners in the district considering installing security cameras. police say there have been 11 burglaries and break-ins in the marina in the past week and a half. one hair salon owner had her door broken down, but nothing was taken. other business owners say they were not as fortunate. >> what is the employees on edge. it puts the business owners on edge, and makes everybody uncomfortable and worried. >> police say they have strong leads and a possible suspect. they are asking shop owners not to leave money in their stores overnight. and another warning this morning about burglaries. this one for resident in the american canyon area. police say about 10 homes have been peculiarized.

those house are in newer developments like this area east of highway 29. police are asking residents to keep an eye out for anything suspicious and give them a call if they see anything. police are investigating a shooting that sent a 28-year- old man to the hospital last night near snell and hillsdale avenues. police found the victim about three miles away at monterey road and curt in her avenue. officers believe the man drove limbs to the second location. he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. no arrests have been made. the upcoming monday the city of san carlos will hold a study session to figure out what it should do about fire service. the city says its partnership with bell man is dissolving later this year. san carlos officials are considering a few options from having the city form its own department to partnering with another fire agency or contract services to a private company. the study session will start at

7:00 this monday at san carlos city hall. time is 7:34. business owners in berkeley are pushing for a ordinance. they're in talks with city leaders to create an ordinance that would prohibit sitting in line on the sidewalks. supporters say that would clean up the area and make it more inviting. >> i think that it brings down the entire neighborhood. that it's -- terrible for berkeley businesses and especially for tourism. >> it's ridiculous. everybody needs a place to be. i didn't think that not having a house was a crime. >> voters passed the controversial sit ordinance in november, but implementation of the law has yet to get off the ground. bay area tea party members will continue their tax day protests today with a private event in hayward hills. it all comes after a public event in san francisco known for its liberal politics.

this rally took place yesterday. tea party members say they were demonstrating against governor brown's call to extend temporary taxes. a smaller protest also took place yesterday in pleasanton. that event marked the merger of two tea party groups into one. the tri-valley patriots and pleasanton tea party. >> we're looking at the senate race for feinstein. we'll work on that, and i think we're going to take that one as well. that's our goal. our ultimate goal is to turn the state red and i believe we can have a significant impact in that. >> the new joint tea party and pleasanton says it will soon have 25,000 members. heavy rain caused significant damage across northern california last month, and now four bay area and central coast counties are set to receive help from the state after governor brown made declarations. those declarations apply to alameda, contra costa, monterey, santa cruz and 15 other counties across the state. the storms caused flooding and

landslides. capitola and san pablos had the worst damage. good morning to you! a partly cloudy start to the day, giving you just a nice view there. we have high clouds overhead. a mix of high clouds, some dealing with low clouds, even a little fog this morning. we've got a nice little onshore push. san francisco reporting nine miles per hour. oakland reporting five. and that is helping some of the coastal clouds to reach inland. it will be burning offer along the coastline between the next two hours or some of we've got high clouds ahead of the next system, continuing to ride over the north of us. we do have a ridge of high pressure in place, sort of a flat ridge and it's allowing just a few sprinkles to squeeze out over areas along the north bay from time to time. mid-50s in san jose now. palo alto and redwood city it's a mild start out there. even five to 10 degrees warmer than yesterday over livermore, concord, hayward, all reporting warmer conditions this morning. 54 right now in oakland.

53 in san francisco. and if you need to get out, santa rosa 50 degrees as well. and we are again dealing with a little fog in areas right around santa rosa. i'll show you again the storm track remaining to the north. this looks a lot like yesterday where the northern half of the state continuing with mostly cloudy skies. the southern havel mostly sunny, even areas like palm springs expected to warm into the 90s for the afternoon. we're not going to see that but we'll get a little warm-up here as well. satellite view easy to see. this ridge again kind of flat. it's kind of being squashed a little bit by the storm track that continues to send waves over the area. and again, just bringing a slight chance for maybe a few sprinkles. over the north bay, that will be about it. we'll see high clouds and we will look at 60s and 70s for the afternoon. by sunday night into monday, we've got changes in store. most of us expected to see rain rain late sunday and the monday morning commute could be soggy. 73 in napa. 73 for concord. 69 expected oakland and 65

degrees right around san francisco. 72 san jose this afternoon. 70 degrees in fremont. low 70s pleasanton, extended forecast, so overall a good- looking within. we will be in between clouds but our temperatures will feel pretty nice sunday night and monday. there's a chance for rain. tuesday and wednesday our temperatures continuing to cool. we'll fall back below average for this time of year. we've got models to show that you rain coming up in just a little bit. the new bay bridge is one step closer to being completed. let's give you a live look at that span under construction where a crucial piece of the new suspension tower is now in police. yesterday crews put the -- into place, a 500-ton piece designed to keep the tower together, which will fold up the bridge. caltrans says lifting it into place required a very slow and delicate process. crews had to lift it up from the barge below, one foot at a time. >> our biggest challenge in operations like this is wind.

wind kicks up, it's very difficult on the crews to do the work. >> the next piece to be installed is called a saddle. when it's raised to the top next month, the suspension cable will be thread right through it. then more cables will connect to the traffic decks below. the new bay bridge should be completed in 2013. soaring gas prices have many drivers running on empty. in southern california, triple- a says nearly 16,000 members a month are making emergency calls because they're on the side of the road and out of gas. that's up 13% from a year ago. the average price of gas in california is 4.19. only hawaii has more expensive gas. but experts advise against waiting too long to fill up because mechanical problems can arise with too little fuel in the tank and that could cost you more in the long run. cars lined up as far as the eye can sri in seattle, waiting for a chance at free gas. one man rode his bike there, carrying two gas cans.

meeting laws and part of the deal avoids litigation. you can tell us why the board wand her out? >> we just wanted to move in a new direction is what i'll say. and we have, and we've hired sherwood wakeman, who will begin serving next saturday as the general manager. and he'll be flexible as to how long they'll serve as we begin our search for the new gm. >> bob, i got to ask you in regard to the search for the new gm, how long does this plan on taking punishment longer it goes do you think riders will be impacted? >> sherwood wakeman is a stead hand. he served in this role twice before so i think he will be able to capably guide this organization for however long this search does take. i think it will take about four to six months, and probably once we make an offer to someone, they'll have to give notice to wherever they're working. so that will -- that kind of contributes to the four to six-

month range. >> what are you looking for in your next gm? when dorothy leaves, go in a new direction, is that because of the oscar graham case? some say you had a surpluses for the last couple years, and that's a good thing. >> it is a good thing. we have a very high recovery ratio. our passengers fares cover about 72% of our operating expenses. our challenge is the capital investment. we have about a $7 billion shortfall over the next 30 years. and we have some huge projects coming up. bart has the oldest fleet in the nation right now. and we're looking to replace that so we can remain reliable, and that's going to be about $3.4 billion project. so i think our new gm will be the task will be to arrange for the funding of this critical

-- talk about that rain and what you can expect for the weekend coming up in just a few moments. overnight we learned of more deaths from the storms about thering the south. the storms produced numerous tornadoes and killed at least 16 people in three states. an alabama man was killed when a twister hurled his mobile home nearly a quarter mile across the state highway. falling trees have become a deadly problem in arkansas. >> next thing you know, heard a big boom and was hoping it didn't fall on either side of the house and landed on cars. so it was a pretty bad storm. >> the storms began late thursday in oklahoma then pushed into arkansas. they're expected to move up towards the east coast today. and here's a look at the damage left behind after a tornado swept through this small oklahoma town. two sisters were killed and 25 people hurt when the twister touched down there. some roads are still blocked because of fallen tree limbs. that pulled down power lines. the town's only school was also heavily damaged. this morning the taliban is

accident yesterday in contra costa county. an amtrak train hit a man near lowering avenue. the train was on the union pacific tracks. the victim has not been identified. in just about an hour, volunteers will spread out across the bay area and start cleaning up local parks and trails. it's all part of an early earth day celebration. ktvu's ali rasmus joining us live this morning in berkeley with more on the clean-up. ali. >> reporter: we're in east shore state park, and right now you can see i'm the only person out here. but that is going to change a couple hours from now when as many as 300 volunteers are going to spread out here along this area of the park. they're going combing through the grass and looking for pieces of debris like this food wrapper and plastic, pieces of plastic. the grass is kind of tall so it's hard to sri all the garbage that's here but there's a lot of food wrappers, also some plastic bottles. we see some food out here also as well. that's the kind of thing that

volunteers will be cleaning up as part of earth day clean-up. along with cleaning up trash, volunteers are going to be looking for non-native plants and removing those non-native plants and restoring the vegetation to more or less its natural state. this clean-up event isn't just happening at this park. it's also going on at about a dozen other parks here in the bay area this morning. some of the people planning to help out are volunteering on their own. others are volunteering on behalf of california and by area companies. but no matter where the volunteers come from organizers say their help is very much needed. >> going to be at 18 park system-wide, so everywhere from bakes field up to the oregon border and so we'll be planting native plants, cleaning up beaches, removing non-native plants, all kind of things. beautification of parks. >> without volunteers we couldn't do a lot of things we do. the park district nearly 13,000 annual volunteers, about

125,000 hours of service they contribute. so we couldn't do a lot of the things without volunteers. >> again, this isn't the only park where this early earth day clean-up event is going on. we have a list of about a dozen or so state parks where similar event and volunteers will be gathering. the volunteer coordinator says they definitely need more volunteers to help out at their san bruno mountain state park and snohomish coast state park. registration starts about a half hour from now. there are several other earth day event going on today in the bay area. this weekend there will be two locations where you can recycle electronic waste. e-waste includes old tvs and computers, and is the fastest growing category of solid waste in the country. there will be a dropoff location at the fairgrounds in

get back they will have a little more than two months to reach a budget agreement. the state still faces roughly $15 billion shortfall. san francisco state senator is once again receiving racist and threatening fax messages. democrat leeland yee says his office received this fax. some of the inappropriate messages have been blurred out. and as you can see, though, the fax also threatens president obama. these office received similar fax messages earlier this year, and last year, including one that showed an image of a noose. the state senator says he has reported the latest threats to authorities. >> you can't deviate from your policies and programs. you've got to stay focused and so that's what we're doing. we're not dismissing it but then we're not letting it run our lives in the capitol, in my district office, at all. >> yee admits some of his legislation might be provoking the threatening messages. california is in crisis when it comes to students and

our fiscal crisis. >> senator, good morning. thank you for joining us. before we get to the event that we want to talk about today, i do want to stay on the education angle and talk about teaching california students about gay history. your bill is getting closer to the government's desk and some say it should be taught at home. yet put into the textbooks, keep it in the public schools. your thoughts on the bill? >> we have an epidemic currently of bullying in our schools. kids are being called gay in a very derogatory fashion. currently it's led to murders and suicides of young students. we are failing our students when we censor their history lesson, denying them the fact of a civil rights movement. we teach students about dr. martin luther king and he was after african-american man, who fought for civil rights. why we would deny them the fact that there was a man named

harvey milk who fought for several rights as he was a gay man, that in fact he was murdered in his city hall office because of who he was. we know in school districts like the l.a. unified and the san francisco unified, where we do center inclusive studies that the rates of bullying are decreased, not just for lg students for all students. this is proven and can be very effective. >> staying on education, you also center this other issue on getting kids through school, california dropout research projects says if you do stop out statewide you save $12 billion and prevent 15,000 criminal acts. that's a huge number. >> the statistics are startling. 75% of our state prison inmates are high school dropouts. and 75% of our high school dropouts were -- chronically truant, meaning they were absent more than 10% of the

school year. 18 days or more per school year. so when a student doesn't show up in school and we know there are some student who are missing not just 10% of the school year, but 20, 30 and 40% of the school year. their future is going to be determined for them by the time they're 10 or 12 years old. that is criminal. and if fact and is criminal behavior and we want to work with families, make sure that they know it is their legal responsibility to get their children to school. and if they are not getting them to school, to contact them yet again, in language appropriate fashion, so that they know there are alternative educational programs for their kids, if the traditional programs aren't working for them. and if finally after first and second and third attempts and every tune is ignored by the parent, that that case can then

be referred to the district attorney's office and it's then when they realize how serious and is they're not getting their child to school, they -- finally pay attention and we know this through a very successful program that our attorney general when she was the district attorney of san francisco, used truancy in san francisco by 25%. there was better daily average attendance for the unified school district and they picked up some hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state because of increased attendance. >> we have talked about that. it's been a very interesting program and we hope that more solutions get discussed today. senator mark leno, coming up for joining us. we have this information on where -- in san francisco because we know the discussion on solution gets understand way at 9. goes until noon. so it's at this address thank

thanks for staying with us this morning. we do begin with some overnight news for you. oakland police are now investigating a shooting that left one man dead around 2:00 this morning. officers responded to 73rd and halladay after receiving calls about a possible drunk driver. when they arrived on the scene, they found one man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. he died on has way to the hospital. it appears the man was shot in his car near the mall. no word on his identity. homicide detectives hope this video sheds lights on the killing of a 25-year-old man. it shows the man walking along international boulevard yesterday morning. the car in the video does a u- turn then approaches the man, then police were called to the scene later and found him on the ground with a possible gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a union city police are looking for a 14-year-old boy who has not been seen since

an annual celebration bringing out volunteers all across the bay area. ali rasmus is live in berkeley with where people are gigaup their saturday morning to make things a little bit cleaner. >> reporter: that's right, mike. we're at east shore state park, and right now here behind me you can see they've got the tents set up, organizers are preparing for as many as 300 volunteers to come here on this site and start cleaning things up here along the shoreline. one of things they will look for are obvious things, trash and debris, wrappers, but also non-native plants. they'll be doing a bit of gardening here and removing some of the non-native plants and cloning up some of the dead vegetation that is out here, just making things like a lot nicer. joining us now is elizabeth goldstein with the parks foundation. this isn't the only park where this massive volunteer effort is going. give us an idea of the scope of this event for earth day.

>> absolutely. it's our -- annualth day and we're at 36 sites all over the state of california. we're expecting about 5,000 volunteers turning out at all those sites. >> and they're going to be cleaning up and also removing some of the non-native vegetationing doing repair work on fences as well. >> absolutely. rebuilding trails, putting in fences, doing all kinds of things, depending on the particular site and needs of those sites. >> now, in the backdrop, these are tough times for the california state parks. agency facing possibly up to $22 million in budget cuts. there's some state parks that could close. where is the process in all that? when we will know which parks will close? >> i can't tell you about that, the california state parks department has been facing a $22 million cut that needs to be taken to their general fund that needs to be completely in effect by july 1, 2012. so they'll start implementing as soon as the new fiscal year

starts this july 1. that will mean parks will close all over the state. but we've been waiting for a list to come out. the legislature established criteria. but we don't know what son the list yet. >> er going to definitely rely on some volunteers, possibly you made need to rely on more denying on the future. >> absolutely. california state parks foundation has been supporting the department with volunteers every earth day, and many other times a year for many years. but now is more important than ever. this department is running on fumes now. they've had cuts year after year for a long, long time. and it's beginning to really tell on in park system. and obviously, as we look at closures in the coming months, it's going to be even worse. >> thank you for talking to us this morning. the event starts at 9:00 and this isn't the only park where this volunteer clean-up event is going to take place. some other state parks, about a dozen in the bay area, mount

fatal skydiving collision in southern california. one skydiver was killed yesterday after colliding midair with another in riverside county. police say their parachutes crashed. the injured skydiver is in critical condition. yesterday's collision comes just two weeks after a pair of jumpers were killed in the same place in a similar crash. a new report suggests half of the meat and poultry sold in u.s. supermarkets may be tainted with the staph germ. the findings are based on 136 samples of beef, chicken, pork and turkey. researchers found more than half contained the staph bacteria. and half of those samples had a form of drug resistant bacteria. >> kind of frightening because i love chicken. eat a lot of it. >> we take risks every time you leave the house. i'm not too worried about it. >> researchers say proper cooking of the meat should kill the germs. barry bonds remains in legal limbo waiting to find out if the government is going to

in california. almost a year after the bp oil disaster, the coast guard says most of louisiana's coastline is clean. 11 oil workers died in the explosion in the gulf of mexico on april 20th. a lot of wildlife suffocated in the resulting oil spill. fishermen were laid off and tourism was hit hard. workers were out in grand isle yesterday removing tar balls. the coast guard says it's a daily ritual but some residents question that. >> you never see this many people in one area on this whole beach seven miles long. >> goes up to your knees if you walk on it. nobody cleaning it. >> coast guard says almost 92% of louisiana shoreline is now clean. running on empty. why thousands of california drivers are ending up on the side of the road out of gas.

just a few hours ago, power was restored at sacramento international airport. a power outage hit around 5:30 yield night. it forced the closure of a security screening station in terminal b. passengers at that terminal were redirected to another screening station, where the power was turned on. outages didn't have any significant impact on flights. soaring gas prices have many drivers running on empty. in southern california triple-a says nearly 16,000 members a month are making emergency calls because they're on the vied of the road out of gas.
