good evening i'm ken wayne. heather holmes is off tonight. there has been a significant development in the protest over vallejo's plans to build a park on sacred indian burial grounds. ken pritchett has word that the federal government is getting involved. ken? >> reporter: look at that 15- acre strip of land. some say that is a perfect place for a park. others say it is sacred land that should be left alone. it ask scenic in spots with nature in full displace and it is land blighted with graffiti and negligent. but some say it is what you do not see that makes the land special. >> i feel the spirit of our ancestors. >> reporter: wounded knee is now camped on land that they say contains artifacts of their

ancestors. they say they will stay until the city abandons plans to build a park on the site. >> we don't want a parking lot on the cemetery. >> reporter: the protest began on word that bulldozers would be on site to start construction. the homeowners' association supports the city's plan. glen cove president says that this campout is a last-minute roadblock after a decade of work. >> the way it is right now there is an open sewer system and an old abandoned mansion that is a haven for drug addicts and graffiti all over the place. we want to clean it up. >> reporter: a portion of the park will be set aside to recognize the park's value. >> there is no compromise on sacred burial sites.

>> reporter: we tried to reach the park district today, saturday but we were unsuccessful. the federal government has now become involved and will mediate talks between the parks district and the native americans on monday. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. the san francisco medical examiner is trying to determine the identity of a body that washed ashore. he is a white male wearing boots and dark plants. is it unclear if it is a man who escaped a sinking tug boat a week ago. another man on that vessel was rescued. an inflatable boat and life vest used by the missing man washed ashore after the tug boat sank. oakland police are investigating the death of a man who drove several blocks after being shot in east oakland. he was driving his mercedes around 2:00 a.m. when he was hit.

he drove two blocks before crashing into parked cars. he died 40 minutes later at highland hospital. police are offering a $10,000 reward for information on the case. an air traffic controller in miami has been suspended after falling asleep on the job this morning, the fifth such incident nationwide since march. new work rules will be put in place in the next three days to make sure they get rest between shifts. the agency mandated that two controllers be on duty at all times after two jet liners had to land on their own. bryan stow remains in a coma tonight. but he and his family have not been forgot man the bay area. a raffle is underway right now at mccovey's restaurant. he suffered a skull fracture and was placed in a coma to

prevent swelling on the brain. the doctors are hopeful he will wake up on his own. >> it is terrible and uncalled for. and he was just down there for the game. >> we have huge contributions from 5 and 6-year-old kids giving money at of their allowance. it is moving. >> the restaurant wants to raise $20,000 before 11:00 tonight. in union city police are looking for a 14-year-old boy who has not been seen since wednesday morning. michael santos left wearing a hooded sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers. he never showed up at james logan high school. he is 5'2" and waying 110 pounds. he may be a run away. summer is around the corner and ma means taking the boat out and hitting the water but it's some boaters are having second thoughts about that.

john sasaki has more on why they may not leave the shore. >> reporter: this sunny day is an ideal backdrop for a boat show here. people are looking at mostly sailboats but also yachts which can be major gas guzzlers. it was a perfect day to be on a boat. >> it is wonderful to be in the bay with your family with the wind and no phones ringing. it is just beautiful. >> reporter: mark gillman took his family out on their ski boat, something that won't happen often this summer. >> we can't do that. to play the whole afternoon $100. you know? you know, $100 will pay her daycare. >> reporter: and this is why the cost is so high. gas prices that are well above $4 a gallon. >> okay. >> reporter: take a look at this-foot yacht. down the row one with a 1,000-

gallon gas tank. to captain this boat would cost a half million dollars. and anyone who would spend that money is not concerned about the price of gas. it gets one mile a gallon and filling the tank costs $5,000. >> the fuel costs are not the major costs of a boat ownership but you have to consider it. >> reporter: this man says it costs $1,700 to fill the tank on his 4246-footer. >> now with the cost of gas i don't go out as much and i didn't ask my friends to chip in but now i will. >> reporter: for a ride on the bay that might not be a bad deal. i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. the san mateo marina lagoon is open this evening after being shut down after a diesel spill. the fire department closed the lagune this morning to prevent people from coming in contact

with the contaminated water. the university of california held its cow day today for new students. -- cal day today for new students. a band greeted visitors to the entrance to cal. the students toured the campus including classrooms and laboratories and cultural spots. it highlighted the 50th anniversary of the peace corps. more volunteers come from cal than any other school system in the u.s the cal students wore posters around the campus and called jerry brown to ask him to not strip them of their education. tuition could double and they are concerned. >> we are looking at tuition increasing to 20 to $25,000 is a big jump from the previous year. >> the budget plan would cut $500 million each from the uc

and csu systems and $400 million from community colleges. without tax extensions the cuts could go even deeper. earth day is a week away but hundreds of volunteers across the state got off to an early start and helped clean up 30 parks across the state. the effort comes at a time when the state park system is struggling. >> reporter: with the san francisco skyline as the backdrop east shore park looked peaceful in the distance. but volunteers on the grass were amazed by what they found. >> cigarette filters and high per determinic needles. >> reporter: shotgun casings and bottles of sunscreens. >> just a few steps to throw it away but people trash it in the water. >> reporter: led by workers from berkeley, an army of 300 volunteers cleaned things up. and it is not just trash these

plants are not nayive the area and have to be thrown out. >> reporter: it is part of the earth day cleanup. you can see scenes like this at dozens of parks across the state. >> we are at 36 sites all over the state. we are expected 5,000 volunteers. >> reporter: the state park system needs the help. it is facing a $22 million budget cut this july. >> that money is going to mean that parks will close all over the state. but we are waiting for a list to come out. the legislature established criteria but we don't know what is on the list. >> reporter: the parks that the volunteers are cleaning up could be closed a couple months from now. >> i think that is terrible. it impacts all of us. we forget how much we enjoy the park. >> reporter: as long as the shoreline is open she will continue to help any way she can. in berkeley, ktvu channel 2 news. coming up, it's playoff fever at the shark tank.

other causes brought gifts to children's hospital. the hospital desperately needs donations this time of year. >> every year at christmas everyone does toy drives but nothing at easter. so we got the idea to do it. >> reporter: more toys were collected in fremont as well. the road dogs got together for a party and barbecue afterwards. researchers have a plan to reduce hiv infections in san francisco by 80%. the plan includes annual testing of sexually active gay and bi-sexual man and starting them on drugs immediately if they test positive. current practice calls for the drugs only after the immune system starts to decline. but they might be less infectious on the drugs. in libya, rebel forces are pushing fighters to the front

surinder singh while the friends were taking a walk. the nation's deadliest storm system of the system has left at least 17 people dead in the midwest and deep south over the last two days. seven people died in alabama. among them a mother and her two children. as many as 100 tornadoes have touched down in six alabama counties. in oklahoma, a family was saved from a torrent by a basement shelter. only the door to the shelter remains standing. in texas strong winds and drought are feeding massive wildfires that destroyed at least 60 homes a day after losing one of their own, the firefighters returned to the fire lines outside dallas. some areas have been burning more than a week. the winds calmed down but the strong gusts are expected to return tomorrow. a lot calmer around here. a nice day for most of us in the bay area. let's check in with the weather center to see what is

happening. >> mid- to upper-70s but still have the fog on the shoreline. it looked like a summer time weather pattern with the fog bank on the coastline. right now i can show you this on live storm tracker 2. there is the coverage the clouds near point rays and moving into the golden gate with some patchy fog out there. that will continue to be on the increase in the short term. a look outside right now, a live camera looking at san francisco it is currently 58 degrees. we have that onshore breeze that will transport the clouds and it will cools us off on sunday. that is after a nice day away from the shoreline. 70s in antioch. san francisco, 65 degrees and patchy fog on the coast. pacifica at 57. here's the weather story for tonight. we do have this with partly cloudy skies and coastal fog out there. tomorrow for your sunday, scattered clouds begin to cool

giants are off to a fast start this afternoon. how are they doing right now? >> if night is young but a lot has happened already in the giants game in arizona. san francisco jumped ahead with a home run in the 1st inning. this time it was buster posey getting all of a joe saunders pitch. and just like that barry zito was staked to a 2-0 lead. but it is a short night for zito. montero into the right corner with a pair of runners on board. and later in the inning, zito left after injuring himself fielding a budget. he was replaced by mota. they are in the 5th the diamond backs leading 3-2. the sharks and kings about to begin game two of their stanley cup series. they will be without jared white. -- stole won't play serving a
