one of san francisco's most popular springtime events is drawing to a close right now. the cherry blossom festival included today's grand parade and fundraising efforts for japan. >> reporter: take a look, you can see the crowds that were attending the festival are still here. let's give you a sense of where we are. we area along the parade route and watched as donation buckets made their way along floats in the parade. the steady rhythm of the drums lent a sense of urgency. the day said this was a parade with a purpose. >> i came last weekend and i really liked the diversity of people and kind of like you said the unified feeling. >> reporter: even before it started board members the cultural and community center of northern california say they

raised $1.6 million for the relief effort. last year more than 200,000 celebrated the festival. organizers say this year they will beat those attendance numbers. >> i think people are coming in droves only because they want to help. >> reporter: big sellers this year, t-shirts and hoodies. proceeds will buy the essentials for japan. >> medical supplies, water which is very important, and you know all of that is life and death. >> reporter: donors say they are a bonus, helping out after a disaster isth right thing to do. >> it wouldn't be right not to care. imagine if that happened to you, just put myself in their shoes and i want someone to help out too. that's how i feel. >> reporter: they say they are very thankful for all the donations and are saying if people couldn't make it out to the parade to donate they hope

they will be able to find other reliable organizations to send aid to japan. >> oakland police are looking for the driver of a truck that hit an oakland restaurant. it happened just after one at the san francisco restaurant in the 8400 block of international boulevard. police and witnesses say the driver of a green pickup truck was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when the truck hit the curb and hit the front of the restaurant. the driver then fled the scene. police arrested a man suspected of shooting another man outside a restaurant late last night. it happened just before 11 at the bay fair mall on east 14th street near fairmont. police say the man showed up at restaurant and shot the 22-year- old victim. the victim apparently was with moore's ex-girlfriend. an ambulance took the man to the hospital where he had

surgery, his condition hasn't been released. police say he found moore at his house and arrested him. >> the search is on after police say a gunman opened fire at a house party early this morning killing one and wounding four others. in this say it was around 3:30 when the shooter was asked to leave a party because others said he was just to drunk. witnesses say the man got irate and then pulled a gun and started shooting. >> i can imagine it was chaos inside when the thing happened and to have so many victims in one incident is very unusual. >> police have not identitied the suspect or the man who was killed. police say they have responded to a number of disturb ants at this same home over the past year. there hasn't been any improvement this weekend in the condition of giant's fan nearly beaten to death outside dodgers stadium. brian stowe remains in critical condition. according to the hospital doctors placed him back in a

coma yesterday due to seizures. he will be monitored for the next few days to see when doctors are reduce medication again. >> during yesterday's news we told you about a fundraiser for the stowe family. the restaurant said tonight their raffle and auction raised $6,100 yesterday. some customers donated large sums while children emptied their piggy banks. they said they will kick in another $3,900 to make for an even $10,000. in less than half an hour a benefit hockey game at shark's ice in san jose. here say live picture. the event is raising money for brian stowe's family. the game puts stow e's employer against firefighters. we will have a live report coming up at 5:30. >> this weekend's nice weather doesn't appear to be sticking

around. mark is tracking some possible rain at the start of your workweek. >> reporter: the rain approaching the bay area right now. you see rain showers up north. at least in the short term this, fog, coast side and around the bay was a constant for the beaches this weekend. temperatures at 6:00 upper 50s to the lower 60s, by 8:00 the clouds will be on the increase and by ten we have the chance of a shower mainly up in the north bay. overnight you can see most areas on the mild side. monday morning in the 50s with santa rosa 51 degrees, livermore 52. mostly cloudy skies and the showers making a come back. here is the forecast model right now. you can see what happens as we put it in motion into tomorrow morning. activity that will impact the drive across parts of the bay area first thing tomorrow, coming up we will run this through the day on monday and show more showers and more rain clouds to talk act in the five-

. there are changes down the road in where people can buy rat poison. it turns out the poison is killing a lot more than just rats. jim vargas is in oakland to tell us it's showing up in rather unexpected places. >> reporter: these rat poisons are pretty effective all right. the problem is that they are killing the animals, some animals which feed on the rodents. the active ingredients in products like this cause internal bleeding when a rat or

these animals into their yards, barn owls for instance. >> reporter: beginning in june the government is banning the most toxic poisons. although farmers will still have access to the strong doses. live in oakland. jim vargas. >> tomorrow marks the 105th anniversary of the great 1906 quake and fire that left san francisco in ruins. today the last three known survivors were honored. 105-year-old bill was just three months old when the quake hit. the other two, 109-year-old ruth and 108-year-old rose who now lives in nevado. mr. delmonte rushed him out of san francisco by horse and wagon through the flames and rubble. the family relocated across the bay until the city was rebuilt. >> it was pretty rough. they had a little -- cross the

bay near san leandro until they rebuilt the home. >> reporter: tomorrow morning they will gather for the city's yearly quake wreath laying ceremony. sirens will go off again in san francisco to mark the anniversary of that quake and resulting fire destroyed san francisco and surrounding areas. emergency officials say we have learned a lot since then. >> reporter: before dawn more than a century ago the ground started shaking and when it stopped less than a minute later san francisco was on fire and in ruins. at least 700 lost their lives in that great quake and fire. today there are only three survivors. bill who was just a baby at the time will be there at

tomorrow's ceremony. this was him last year. >> it's something big for them and me. i can't believe that i'm still here. >> reporter: and as they prepare for this anniversary the question remains, are we ready? today we asked the deputy director of san francisco's emergency services. >> my answer is, you know, we are ready to manage whatever comes down the pipe. >> reporter: he said we have learned lessons from 1906 but also from the many disaster that have happened since. disaster that have hit the nation and the world in the last several years. from 9/11 to hurricane katrina to the latest in japan emergency officials are constantly learning. >> the bottom line, the challenges are relevant because they teach us what to expect around things like taking care of people, making sure the first responders have what they need. >> reporter: san francisco's mayor went to his first disaster council meeting week

and said everybody needs to take a look at their own preparations. as we prepare to remember the great quake we know life can change in seconds. while you can't stop it, it's about being as ready as possible to react and to respond. ktvu channel 2news. >> the next big battle in congress is expected to be over raising the death ceiling which lets the nation fund the budget by borrowing more money. >> i think it would make the last crisis look like a tame, modest one. it would be more dramatic. the cost of borrowing would go up and it would have a permanent devastating damage on the credit worthiness as a country. >> some have threatened to vote against the measure. the president returns to the bay area this week. he will visit facebook headquarters on wednesday for a

town hall. the event will be held in front of an audience of about a thousand leaders and employees of facebook. his focus is said too be the economy and job creation. he will also hold a fundraising dinner wednesday night. >> the faa making more changes for air traffic controllers after another controller was caught sleeping on the job yesterday in miami. >> i'm outraged and i want the flying public to know we are doing all we can, 24-7 to correct this problem. >> transportation secretary made it clear he won't tolerate sleeping on duty. the new rule also give controllers at least nine hours off between shifts. that's compared to eight now. they will be prevent from swapping shifts to get a long weekend and more managers will be on duty during the morning hours and at night to remind controllers that nodding off is not acceptable. the danger of sleeping on

the job not limited to just controllers. studies show 30 to 50% of night shift workers fall asleep at least once a week while at work. those include truck and bus drivers, airline pilots, nurses and doctors. some experts say napping should be allowed as a way to handle night shift work. >> some airline passengers at sfo found themselves delayed after a fuel spill. it happened around 1:30. shortly before a cafe pacific jet bound for hong kong was set to take off. that's what fuel started leaking the plane forcing passengers to get off. crews responded to the tarmac to clean up the spilled fuel. the duty manager said the plane finally took off just after four. no word on the cause of the spill. bay area gas prices appear to be holding steady, at least for this weekend. aaa updated its gas price averages overnight. right now the average price for a gallon of region leaded in

. at least 43 people have now died in the most severe storm outbreak to hit the united states in three years. hundreds of tornadoes have touched down across six southern states since thursday. rich takes a look at the damage. >> reporter: violent storms ripping through the heart of north carolina, over 60 tornadoes reported in this state alone yesterday. >> everything destroyed, it's all gone. >> just -- unbelieve bible really. you know you didn't know what was going on but you could hear it tearing in to the house and everything and when you get out and see it's destroyed everything you worked for. >> reporter: in sanford a home improvement store was hit, store managers hustled more than a hundred customers and workers into the rear of the building. >> i ran out front and looked

over the horizon and there was a huge massive tornado. at that point we started making pages, please get to the back, grabbing everybody. the screaming and the emotions going on, we heard just as much crashing and metal behind us and running to the back and seeing the metal just roll off. >> reporter: it was the worst spring storm to hit in two decades. in 1984, 42 people were killed in the state. >> it's just a hard time. we all have to pitch in. thank god there weren't as many lost as could have been. >> reporter: several deaths have been reported in neighboring virginia. a tornado went across more than 12 miles through one county up rooting trees and destroying homes. they claimed the first lives thursday night and then went through arkansas, mississippi, georgia and alabama. many face a long road to recovery. >> just pick up the pieces and keep ongoing. >> today the governor of texas asked the president to declare

his state a major disaster area because of massive fires. fires have now burned more than 1.5 million acres or 2400 square miles across the state. one firefighter has died. 244 homes are destroyed and thousands are threatened. calmer wind's have allowed fire crews to start to contain a few of the larger fires because of the long drought in texas they may burn for as long as two months. >> this evening we are getting a new look inside the damaged nuclear power plant. video was taken from inside the plant today showing the damage caused by the quake, tsunami and explosions inside the reactor buildings. today the plant operate era nouned a plan to temporarily cover the damaged reactors in six to nine months and then remove the material inside. the company said it hopes people living near the reactors will be able to return home but the final decision will be up to the government. the secretary of state met

find a missing miner. a tunnel collapsed friday trapping him a mile underground. nobody has been able to make contact with him. rescue teams have been working round the clock to clear 75 feet of debris. the mining company flew in a special machine today to try to speed up the effort. >> the faa is investigating an emergency landing by a small plane on a new orleans street. it had mechanical trouble. the pilot said he had no choice but to land immediately. he dodged power lines and steered clear of pedestrians and most vehicles but wasn't able to avoid hitting a van. >> you can see -- like in disstress and it was like he was just flopping back and forth and i noticed him coming toward my vehicle. >> i just didn't want to hurt anybody. that was the main thing. a lot of people walking around here and -- when i started coming up to this crossing here i saw the cars and one of them managed to see me and the trees

. we saw it early their year at dayton a more two by two nascar racing today when it ended they had a tie for the tightest finish in stock car history. this is as close as they came to the big one. kurt busch running in to brad, five cars get involved in all. kasey kahne's car catches fire. he is frustrated with the turn of events. in the end a sprint to the finish with three pairs of cars. johnson on the inside getting pushed by dale. clint boyer on the outside getting a push by harvick. that's gordon in the middle. it's johnson by the slimmest margin. you can see him on the inside just edges out boyer.
