meeting -- at facebook. good afternoon. we begin with the investigation into the suspicious activity involving a young child in marin county. a man apparently approached a girl yesterday and tried to get her into his car. allie rasmus is live with more. >> reporter: it happened as girl was walking home, at sir francis drake president and san anselmo boulevard. the -- boulevard and san anselmo boulevard. the girl was walking home from school when a man in a box-type van asked if she wanted a ride home. he's described as a white man, in his 30s and 40s. he was wearing a black plastic -- wearing black plastic

glasses and driving a black van. a san rafael resident called police to report seeing a man fitting the same description driving a black van around the middle school in san rafael. they reported seeing this three hours, just three hours before this happened in san anselmo. >> we have sent out a track flier to all of our local agencies and the schools have been notified. >> reporter: now the superintendent's office would not tell us which middle school the 11-year-old was coming from when this happened but they did send out notices warning them -- warning parents to be more vigilant allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a 6-year-old boy bought a loaded gun to school in

houston, texas. the gun went off. police say the boy would brought the gun and two other kids were hurt. but they should be okay police are trying to figure out how the kid got the gun. a mysterious sheen, rain- bow colored sheen was spotted at about 6:30 this morning at aquatic park. no-swimming signs were posted. they believe it's diesel fuel and not spilled oil. it's tough to know where the spill came from. >> we don't really know anything. it probably came from the bay. whether it came from a ship, it baste just -- it basically just drifted in. >> the coast guard reported it was gone and they are still monitoring the situation and will probably take the no swimming signs down today. president obama will hold

an online town hall meeting to talk about the economy at facebook's headquarters. kraig debro just spoke with an adviser and has more. kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon. the president was in virginia this morning, he took his message to annandale, virginia, his deficit reduction message, that's exactly the form his presentation will take tomorrow at facebook's headquarters. >> we fought two wars and we created a new and expensive prescription drug program, and we didn't pay for any of it. and as the saying goes there's no such thing as a free lunch. >> he's gonna go to facebook to talk about exactly this -- we

her boyfriend rushed her to the -- rushed her to hospital. she was with friends. they heard more than a dozen shots. she worked in a staff kitchen. a san jose dog park remains closed after what authorities believe was a pet poisoning. a dog died on saturday after visiting butcher park on camden avenue. there are fears that someone planted poison bait. jennifer said her 3-year-old collin started vomiting and collapsed. dog died after leaving the park. >> we heard he got poisoned. we weren't happy about that. we love the dog park. >> and you love your dogs, too? >> yes and we don't want them to get sick. >> jennifer said she adopted

a tense situation in a shopping mall near boston is over. police evacuated the burlington mall this morning in search for a man who witnesses claim had a rifle. after hearing about the gun scare, man in question called state police to tell them he was the guy they were looking for. however, he never had a gun, only an umbrella sticking out of his backpack. this morning a ceremony was

earthquake in japan. the damage estimate is at $48 million, mostly in the santa cruz and crescent city harbors. a federal disaster declaration allows state and local officials to ask for federal funds to help with the repairs. california emergency management says it will save the state about $25 million. there is more trouble in the tower. an air traffic controller who was supposed to be watching the skies has been suspended for watching a movie. the faa says the problem was discovered when more than three minutes of a movie's soundtrack was transmit over an open microphone at the cleveland control tower. the controller's manager is also suspended. the faa administrator and the head of the air traffic controllers union are now out talking to controllers about all of the recent control tower problems. >> over the country, over the

johnson & johnson leading the dow jones higher today after its earnings beat wall street expectations but there's still worries about the u.s. debt. gold prices are topping $1500 for the first time ever, shattering an important psychological record due to a wave of market uncertainty and investors are looking for an alternative to the weak u.s. dollar. right now the dow is up 60.

nasdaq is up 8. s&p is up 6. there's good news from housing industry today. builders broke down on the most new homes in six months. new home construction is up more than 7% in march, to an annual rate of 549,000 homes. that's almost 30,000 more than analysts had forecasts and the trend could continue as the number of building permits issued also rose. delta airlines is leading the latest attempt to raise airfares. they added $10 round trip to most of its routes and they are watching to see if other carriers follow the lead. this is the 11th time this year that airlines have announced fare hikes but the last four have failed. airlines said they need higher fares to cover the jet fuel i would hoose gone up 49% since last april. this is hiring day at mcdonald's. the restaurant is looking for 1500 new workers.
