the president will appear at a breakfast fundraiser this morning at the st. rejoice hotel. that's after two fundraisers in san francisco last night. in an appearance at the masonic center the president acknowledged that some of his supporters are frustrated at the slow pace of change in washington. >> i know there are times where some of you have felt frustrated because we haven't got everything done as fast as we wanted. we didn't get everything exactly the way we had planned. >> the president says he gets frustrated too, but he reminded the crowd that back when he was first elected in 2008 he said it would take more than one term to do everything he wants. the friendly audience seemed to like what they heard. >> it was awesome. i love obama. and i had a great time. >> i think it was great although the attention to the inequality that still exists in this country especially for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people in this

country really was not addressed. >> earlier in the day president obama held an online town hall at facebook's headquarters in palo alto where ceo moderated. the president took questions from the audience and from users watching the town hall streamed on facebook. well, mostly friendly crowds have greeted president obama so far here in the bay area. however the top bay area republican had this reaction about the president's call for shared responsibility. >> when is government going to take its share of the blame for growing too much and wasting too much money? shared responsibility, that's code for we're not going to cut back on government. >> now president obama in his references to shared responsibility has called for wealthy americans to pay higher taxes. now, to review the president's schedule today, this morning he's scheduled to appear at a breakfast fundraiser at san francisco's st. regis hotel. that's at 9:40. after that he's scheduled to leave sfo at 10:35.

he'll head from the bay area going to reno. and another town hall meeting. then he'll be traveling to los angeles for two more fundraisers. now we will continue to follow the president's visit throughout the morning for you. you can also get updates on our channel 2 website at ktvu.com. in other news now, pg&e is sending out very important notices to millions of homes and businesses here in the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty telling us it's their latest response to last september's pipeline disaster. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. folks seemed very surprised when we told them that less than a mile from here we're in the downtown area is a high risk pipeline. anyone who lives within a couple of blocks of one of these spots will be receiving a warning letter in the mail from pg&e. now there are a hundred spots that top the list. here's a look at some of them. we're actually in the second most dangerous. there are actually six cities that rank in the top ten here in the bay area. there are four hot spots around the livermore area and fremont.

another in antioch. and a high risk line that runs right underneath stanford university in palo alto. customers say it's about time pg&e took some action. >> it would seem to me that pg&e could do a better job at disclosing information. i don't know why they don't frankly. >> reporter: pg&e has said that for security reasons it does not disclose the information. now the company came under fire after the san bruno pipeline disaster last september after intense pressure from customers and legislators it released its top 100 list of sections of pipe that needed inspected, repaired or replaced. the mailers are being sent out over the next couple of weeks. they will offer advice on what to do if you smell a rotten egg smell of a gas leak or hear hissing, whistling or roaring sounds coming from underground. you have to live within 2,000 feet of the pipe in question in order to receive the letter. but if you don't, you can always log onto our website at ktvu.com and we have a link to the section. reporting live in livermore, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2

news. overnight police arrested a man in connection with alameda's first homicide of the year. the body of the victim was found inside an apartment building on bun vista avenue just before noon yesterday. now police received several calls from people living nearby and investigators say the man was shot to death. his relationship though to the suspect is still unclear. well, there's a major new development involving that series of sexual assaults in oakland's lake merit area. that story coming up in just a few minutes at 6:15. time now 6:06. concern growing now in morgan hill after a third sheep is found dead. yesterday sheep remains were found on west dunn avenue near highway 101. and fish and game officials say the bite marks on the remains appear to be from a mountain lion. now residents are being warned be on the look out for any mountain lions and report any sightings to fish and game. your apple iphone might be keeping tabs on you. that's according to two

researchers who say the iphone has a secret feature. ktvu channel 2 reporter paul chambers is outside an apple store this morning in san francisco where he just talked to some apple customers. what do they say, paul? >> reporter: good morning, pam. you and i had a joke about the song somebody's watching me. somebody is watching you. if you have an i tune or iphone or i pad, it's apple. if you have one of these devices, chances are it's carrying your location. it's tracking everywhere you go. public report states that location history recorded. the information contains latitude and longitude of the record along with time stamp. all of the information is stored when you sync the iphone or i pad with your computer. we just spoke to some people and this is what they had to say. >> i don't have nothing to hide

maybe. i don't really you know concern about it. >> apple came out and were more open about it i think people would relax a little bit more. >> reporter: so now why is apple doing this? it's still unknown. but in the terms and conditions of apple's 15,000 plus word user agreement it states apple and our partners and licenses may collect, use and share data and including realtime geographic location. the reason they do this is to update information in case there's a problem or trouble spot. apple hasn't officially given a statement but they put it in their terms and conditions. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:08. a san francisco parking on demand is up and running this morning. you can check availability and pricing online at sf park.org. also a free down load able app for iphone users is available starting today. sensors installed on parking

spaces and inside of garages in six districts are tracking parking information which is then sent to signs as well as smart phone applications. well, in just a few hours cal train officials will vote on a plan that would keep all of its trains running without any service cuts. cal train which has a $3.5 billion budget deficit is expected to turn to other ways to close that deficit. that may involve borrowing money from its capital fund and delaying maintenance work. they may also raise base fares 25 cents and raise parking fees by $1 starting july 1st. all right. time now 6:09. in case you didn't know, roads were wet this morning. >> right. >> it's got to effect the commute. how are we looking, sal? we're doing okay. dave and pam, i also want to let you know if you want to down load that sf park application, you have to have your iphone up loaded with latest soft wear updates. you have to do that first or they won't let you down load that sf park application. so just a word to the wise. go ahead and do your updates.

[ laughter ] >> westbound bay bridge up to the bay bridge toll plaza no major problems getting on to the bridge right now. looks pretty good. and i can actually for the first time in a few days see the sunrise coming over the hills. mark will be here in just a sec. this is a look at northbound 101 san francisco. that looks good. dave mentioned the wet roads. still a little wet because of some showers that moved through. and you might see that this morning. but, again, not this afternoon. we'll talk to mark in a moment. south bay freeways are looking pretty good. as we look at the livermore valley that is in good shape here westbound 5 0 getting from livermore to dublin in castro valley. 6:10. let's go to mark. hi, sal. this system is a fairly quick mover but still a few lingering drops favor parts of the south bay as we come in a bit tighter wind speeds have been cranking up as well from around 10 to 20 miles an hour. not all this reaching the ground in terms of shower activity. could have a few sprinkles especially between san jose and also right around morgan hill. as far as overall weather story

for today it is this. we have the fog and drizzle this morning. that will set the stage for a sun-cloud mix this afternoon. clouds increasing for tomorrow but it will be dry and the weekend forecast we do bring in some more clouds and just a chance of a shower. behind this system temperatures have been cooling off. it's pretty chilly up in the north bay. santa rosa napa 46, 47 degrees. san jose in the lower 50s right around 51. so today this system is on the move though we are expecting partly cloudy skies later on for most of your thursday. as we put this into motion tomorrow increasing high clouds in advance of this guy. here's our next weather system we're watching for the weekend. most significant rainfall remains to the north of the bay area. but there is the chance of a light shower for saturday favoring the north bay. and then for easter sunday mostly cloudy skies. for this morning clouds and drizzle, 53 to 58 degrees. by 12:00 scattered clouds, 55 to 62. we gradually scale back on the clouds heading into the afternoon. partly cloudy skies by 4:00.

well, good morning to you. welcome back. our time is now 6:14. we're learning more this morning about how journalists were attacked in western libya yesterday. ktvu's allison burns reports from our washington d.c. newsroom that two renowned photographers were killed, two others were hurt. allison. >> reporter: the journalists were on the front lines escorted by rebel leaders in the western city of msrata when they came under attack. two of them were killed. 41-year-old tim heatherrington nominated for an oscar last year for the war documentary, and 41-year-old chris hondros from new york city also an award winning photo journalist. in his last twitter post the

day before heatherring wrote about the fighting indiscriminate shelling by gadafi forces, no sign of nato. a friend who had been in daily e-mail contact with chris went on tv this morning to describe what happened. >> chris and tim were with a group of other journalists on tripoli street and they came under fire and suffered some sort of explosive attack. >> reporter: two other journalists were hurt. seven rebels killed in the explosion. they reportedly suffered shrapnel wounds. the white house released a statement expressing deep concern and calling on the libyan government to take steps to protect journalists doing vital work. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. there's more this morning there's more tragic news tied to those out of control wild fires in texas. a firefighter critically injured while battling a fire north of amarillo has now died. he's the second texas

firefighter to die in the line of duty in the past few months. disastrous wild fires across texas have burned almost a million and a half acres since the beginning of this year. a new audit calling for reform of san jose's disability and retirement for firefighters and. it was too easy for them to claim disability. according to the audit police and firefighters retired on service related disability at a higher rate compared to other city workers. but union officials say the rates aren't surprising because of the nature of their work. city council committee reviews the report today. time now 6:17. well, governor jerry brown is going after state employees to recover unpaid cash advances. now the state offers cash advances to employees for travel to pay vendors and for other payments. governor brown says in 2009 more than $13 million in advances were not collected. so he's ordering the state to

clear future advances within 30 days of being issued. if it's not paid back, that amount will be taken out of the employee's next paycheck. major new development involving the series of sexual assaults in oakland's lake merit area. police say a suspect is now in custody accused of ordering a woman to take her clothes off two days ago. officers made that arrest yesterday. now they say the suspect's face closely matches the sketch that police officers have been handing out. they're now checking to see if he's tied to several sexual attacks in the neighborhood over the past few months. >> he has definitely been patient where he'll hover around a location seeing who's who and then pick his victim. >> police have not yet released the suspect's name. pointing out that this is still an ongoing investigation. time is now 6:18. in colorado the ho hum bandit has been arrested.

identified as 34-year-old adam lynch. he was arrested monday night in denver by the f.b.i. now they call him the ho hum bandit because of his laid back attitude while he's robbing banks. he is suspected of bank robberies in san diego, los angeles, wyoming, seattle and now in colorado. wow. 6:18 is the time right now. sal, how's traffic? it's not too bad, pam. right now traffic continues to move along very nicely in many areas. they're getting a little bit of a back up here at the toll plaza because these metering lights just went on. and it's not all that bad though. once you get on to the bridge it looks good there. on the lower deck there is an injury accident eastbound 80 right before treasure island in the right lane. and that may start causing some back ups. still kind of early but we'll keep watching it. also the morning commute is okay in oakland. the a's are not playing there today. so it is going to be a nice day traffic-wise. and the giants are also not in town. so we get a little bit of a

break from baseball traffic today. this morning's commute on the antioch freeway it's slow. only thing to worry about there. 80 westbound is okay to richmond. and marin county from novato to san raphael off to a good start. now let's go to mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. tracking quite a few clouds out there. showers moving out of the bay area. here's a live look outside where you can still see some lingering overcast out there. but we are expecting skies to become partly cloudy throughout the day. but wind speeds do pick up on the order of 10 to 20 miles an hour. right now in fact you can see some gusty winds closer to san francisco and oakland. as far as shower activity not all is reaching the ground but the main focus closer to morgan hill and also closer to the gill roy area but that's about it and the showers will continue to head out of town. with a clearing we have temperatures cooling off quite a bit. santa rosa 46 degrees right now. san francisco 49. and san jose 51. here's our forecast model. you can see partly cloudy skies this afternoon. it will be dry for your friday. we'll take this into saturday

and you'll notice into saturday morning a little bit of activity out there. not much. but that's when we do bring in just a chance of a light shower or light sprinkle for saturday morning. for today we do have this. temperatures warming back up into the upper 50s to the upper 60s. and a look ahead your five-day forecast scattered clouds for friday. chance of a light shower for saturday morning. mostly cloudy skies on easter sunday. there is a slight chance of a shower into next week on monday. coming up we'll take a look at the wind forecast as we head into the afternoon hours. general electric's earnings jumped 77% in the first quarter. that report in this morning g.e. reports net income of $3.4 billion up from just about $2 billion this time last year. g.e. capital, the company's financial services business tripled profits to $1.8 billion. californians at the back of the pack when it comes to dropping land line service. a new government report shows only 20% of californians rely completely on wireless service for their phones. that compares to some states

good morning. right now traffic is getting busier here at the bay bridge. all of a sudden the last few minutes we've seen it fill up at the toll plaza. also a crash on the lower deck. tell you more about that and the rest of the commute straight ahead. the f.b.i. is now investigating the discovery of a pipe bomb inside a colorado mall. it happened yesterday on the 12th anniversary of the columbine high school massacre. that mall is located just blocks from the school. the device along with two propane tanks were spotted after the fire -- a fire inside the mall's food court.

the propane tanks did not ignite but the fire filled parts of the mall with smoke. no major damage or injuries are reported. major league baseball has made an extraordinary move against the giants long time rival. the league is now assuming control of the los angeles dodgers. commissioner bud sell egg says he'll appoint a representative to oversee all aspects of the business and day-to-day operations of the club. the couple thanes the dodgers is involved in a bitter divorce battle leading to huge money problems for the usually lucrative franchise. time now 6:26. you drivers will be detoured again today in san jose as crews go out to clean up graffiti on a bridge over interstate 280. now the freeway exit ramp to bird avenue will be closed between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. drivers have been detoured the past two days so those work crews could scale across a bridge and paint over a giant graffiti tag. this is a $40,000 clean up

project that took months to coordinate. >> cal trans closing down the lanes and chp helping them. and then cal train helping us with buying the paint and actually performing the paint with the city's antigraffiti program. >> the city hopes to clean up graffiti on all of the bridges by the end of the year. eliminated idols were welcomed back to the stage last night. ♪ [ music ] >> meanwhile the seven remaining finalists sang songs from the 21st century. the judges say santa cruz's james turbine gave the best performance of the night. he's pretty good. tonight's elimination show will feature performances by katety perry and idol alumbar david cook. president obama has one more bay area stop this morning before heading out of town. where the president will be joining supporters for breakfast. pg&e is sending out warning letters to more than two million of its customers.

howard. we just got from the front of that hotel. since most of us have never had a chance to see what's happening at a hotel where the president spends the night, we went up the street and recorded this video. we saw a group of secret service agents returning from a coffee run. couple hotel guests getting id checked before entering the hotel. visitors aren't allowed on howard but peds are free to walk down the sidewalks. [ cheering and applause ] >> it is nice to be back west in the great state of california. and let me -- [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: the president is not just saying that because he went to college here and likes the view of the golden gate bridge from marine one. california is one of the only states that did not lose any congressional seats to republicans during the midterm elections. this presidential friendly crowd probably doesn't need any convincing, but the president knows if he's going to be re- elected, he needs these people to win. >> our work is not finished. it is going to take -- it is

replaced. now the mailers will offer advice on what to do if you detect a rotten egg smell of a gas leak or hear hissing, whistling or roaring sounds coming from underground. again you have to live within 2,000 feet of the pipe in question in order to receive a letter. if you don't receive one but would like more information, log onto ktvu.com. we've provided a link to that map. live in livermore, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:35. we're still following overnight news from oakland. the police continue to search out there for suspects in a shooting that happened outside of a home on 74th avenue last night. two people were shot. both of the victims were treated at highlands hospital. they're expected to survive. one victim actually drove himself to the hospital. still not clear what led up to that shooting. later today the parentings of a slain san francisco high school student are expected to talk for the first time about the death of their only son. 16-year-old andy found shot to death april 10th.

a 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the case. but his lawyer says the two boys were playing with a gun that they thought was unloaded and that the shooting was an accident. the defendant was in court yesterday but he did not enter a plea. the ross valley sanitation district is promising to look for other budget solutions after angry customers said they don't want their rates to double. customers spoke out at a small but noisy meeting where the district outlined plans to raise annual rates as high as $1100. rate payers say the district is unnecessarily spending money it doesn't have and they don't want to pay. >> i am really very interested to know why you need so much of our money. >> you have 32 employees which appears to be about three times what any other district has. >> district officials say the money would go towards hiring eleven new workers needed to speed up replacement of an old and collapsing pipe system. another public hearing will be held next month. no rate hikes will take place

before then. san francisco police officers are now under pressure to give up $14 million in scheduled pay raises. the city faces a projected $306 million shortfall. and departments across the board are being asked to cut spending. but the police union's president tells the examiner that officers have already gone three years without raises and that he would not ask members to give them up for a fourth year. we could find out within a week who mayor ed lee's pick is for san francisco's new police chief. ktvu learned that out of the three candidates two are insiders. the third candidate is an unnamed person from outside the department. time now 6:38. well, today city officials in san francisco could approve a huge development project on treasure island. the $1.5 billion project would create a new neighborhood of 19,000 people on the island in the middle of the bay. this new community would

include a 450-foot high-rise along with stores and shops and thousands of homes. now critics are pointing out the island is built on sand and buildings could topple over in a huge earthquake. bike and pedestrian safety will be on the minds of golden gate bridge officials today. coming up at 6:45 the changes they're proposing to slow bicyclists down. and what they could face if they don't comply. bart is hosting its blue sky festival in san francisco today as part of an effort to make people more eco-conscious. the event takes place at justin herman plaza between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. bart will be giving away tickets. the first 5,000 people to get their blue sky passport stamped by six exhibitors can redeem their passport for a ticket worth $6. >> all right. >> not bad. time now 6:39. sal, you still watching the toll plaza? that's right. there is a crash on the upper deck of the bay bridge. now we thought it was on the

lower deck, but it turned out to be on the upper deck. you can see we're trying to find it with our cameras up there. it's up there at the upper deck of the bay bridge. not there. there. thank you very much. let's move along to the san mateo bridge. the traffic is moving along okay. so you might want to thinking about using this as an alternative. you can see traffic is moving along okay driving to the peninsula. and if you are driving on highway 101 marin county there's a car fire on the shoulder southbound 101. moving down the peninsula traffic is okay so far on northbound 101 and southbound 101. but northbound 280 at 380 there's a crash on the shoulder. now let's go to mark. hi, sal. good morning to you. we're taking a live look outside. you can pick out still some of the clouds but some breaks in the clouds as well. i suspect as we do head into the afternoon hours we can see some more breaks in the overcast as the main system that moves through the bay area overnight that generated the

state employees to repay millions of dollars in cash advances. one audit shows state employees owe the government more than $13 million. and two photo journalists killed while covering the fighting in libya. the photographers with a group of journalists reporting on the fighting between government troops and rebel forces in the. workers in japan may soon go into the most heavily damaged reactor at that damaged power plant. this is new video from inside the facility. the robot sent inside indicates radiation levels may be safe enough to do the work to fix the cooling system. meanwhile a ban on re-entering the evacuation zone around the plant is now in place. that effects more than 80,000 people. radiation concerns prompted the restrictions in people who do not comply face fines or even detention. controversial private investigator chris butler is due in court this morning. butler is the former antioch police officer accused of

setting people up for drunk driving and other arrests. prosecutors say butler worked with two richmond police officers who are now leaving the department as a result of a scandal. those officers are accused of illegally buying guns for volunteers from the department's explorer program so that the young men could work for the officer's private security firm. butler reportedly set up one of those young men to be trapped for a drunk driving arrest after he went to internal affairs about the scandal. time now 6:47. taxing soda may generate a lot of money for struggling california schools. that's according to a new study released today by the california center for public health advocacy. researchers say a one cent per ounce tax of sodas would raise an estimated $1.4 billion for school districts and also pay for childhood obesity programs all over the state. locally it would raise $51 million for alameda county schools, $39 million for contra costa county and $63 million

for santa clara county. later today the golden gate bridge district will consider setting a speed limit for bicycles crossing the golden gate bridge. officials say speed leads to accidents. so to help reduce speeds they're considering a 10 miles an hour speed limit on the sidewalks, 5 miles an hour around the bridge towers. if you violate the law, you could possibly be fined $100. it can get a little tense out there on the bridge, sal. with the bikers and the walkers in the same area. i think sometimes the pedestrians don't appreciate bikers whizzing by them and bicyclists don't like it when pedestrians seemingly get right in front of them. hopefully we can all get along correct. take a look at the bay bridge. you can see how slow it is. clearing an accident westbound at treasure island westbound coming up all the vehicles are being moved right now. they're being moved off the bridge. it's a noninjury crash.

the week before. applications near 375,000 are considered a sign of sustainable job growth. continuing claims also fell slightly to 3.7 million. that's the lowest number in three and a half years. analysts still a little disappointed though with that report. checking in on the numbers though live look at the big board. numbers still up. but i think they would have been higher without that weekly employment number that came in because we had a lot of good earnings coming in this morning that's helping things out. live look at the big board. dow jones up about 15 points. i just want to call up apple really quickly because after it's very good report it's up almost three and a quarter percent. google's former ceo feels more comfortable taking a million dollar paycheck from the company now that he's not running the internet's most powerful company. voluntarily limited his salary to $1 during most of his ten years in google's top job. but it's taking the $1.25

welcome back to the morning news. a 4-year-old girl in tennessee is recovering after a blood alcohol level of 0.14. this is video from whas 11 in kentucky. her daughter drank half a bottle of cup cake scented hand sanitizer. the girl was rushed to the hospital after her mother noticed her eyes were hazy and she was unsteady. the alcohol content in most hand sanitizers is 68%. the girl's mom says most parents carry hand sanitizer and should know how dangerous it can be. the f.a.a. just fired two air traffic controllers for sleeping on the job. this follows a series of

reports of controllers caught sleeping or in one case was actually watching a movie. all the incidents occurred during the controllers' midnight shifts. the f.a.a. released new rules aimed at keeping air traffic controllers awake and that includes giving them nine hours off between their shifts instead of the current minimum of eight hours. this afternoon dogs and their owners will once again be allowed back into san jose's butcher dog park. the park has been closed since the weekend after a dog playing in the park collapsed and died. now poison was suspected, but preliminary tests indicate that it is unlikely that the dog was poisoned at the park. the park will be power washed though before it opens. now just eight days away from the royal wedding. and britain is celebrating another big day. queen elizabeth ii turned 85 years old today. she's celebrating with royal tradition. this one dates back to the middle ages. she's passing out specially minted coins during a ceremony
