event. the president preached to the choir for about 35 minutes. during his speech last night, mr. obama primed the crowd for his next run by reminding what state the united states was in three years ago. >> we had to make tough decisions right off the bat. we had to immediately move a recovery act through that would ensure we wouldn't dip into a depression, that we would help state and local governments keep firefighters on the job and police officers on the job. >> reporter: a couple hours later at palo alto, the president pitched his deficit reduction plan. the markets are concerned the two sides won't be able to reach an agreement on raising a debt ceiling but more permanently agreeing on how to reduce the deficit and what time period to do that the president will go to a trip to reno, nevada, his

area. tara moriarty said it's the latest response. >> reporter: people who live a mile down the street from downtown livermore will be receiving a warning letter from pg&e over the next several weeks. it warns them about a high risk pipeline that runs underneath them. the same exact letter will be sent to 2 1/2 million customers who live within an area of the pipeline. the map shows areas ranked on the top 10 list of hot spots. this is off royal road. there are four hot spots around the livermore area and fremont. one under antioch and stanford university. >> pg&e and any utility have a lab bring the of facilities to

development involving the series of sexual assaults in the lake merritt area. a suspect is in custody accused of ordering a woman to take off her clothes two days ago. officers made an arrest yesterday and they say the suspect's face closely matches the sketch. they're checking to see if the suspect is tide to other sexual assaults. private investigator chris butler is due in court this morning. the former ant ti okay police officer is accused of setting up people for drunk driving and other arrested when they tried to question his performance. the officers are accused of illegally buying guns from volunteers of the explorer program. well, federal reports say large berkeley national laboratory allowed some

subcontractors to hire employees that used social security numbers that belonged to dead people. inspectors reviewed more than 200 tax forms from contractors and found that 32 workers lacked the required documentation like social securtiy cards, driver's licenses or permanent residence cards. in a statement the lab said it's taking steps to ensure that subcontractorsful all of the rules. a san francisco parking space experiment that charges drivers based on the demand, well, it's up and running this morning. you can check real time parking available and pricing online by going to sf park.org. also, there's a free downloadable app for iphone users starting today. there are sense corps installed on parking spaces and in the garages in six district that is track all the parking information and they transmit it to signs as well as smartphone

ring of tomato thieves. the thieves stole six tractor-trailer loads of tomatoes and meat. the total value more than a quarter million dollars. the thieves responded to ads for truck drivers. after picking up the loads, they never showed up at the destination. authorities are investigating a pipe bomb found at a colorado mall. that mall is located a couple blocks away from columbine high. the device, along with two propane tanks, were found after a fire started inside the mall's food court. the propane tanks did not ignite but the fire did fill parts of the mall with smoke. no major injuries or damage was reported. at 10:00 this morning cal train will work on a plan.

the service is expected to come up with alternate ways to close the deficit. it may raise parking fees by $1 starting july 1st. >> governor jerry brown is going after state employees to recover unpaid cash advances. the state offered it for travel, vendor and other payments. governor brown released a statement saying in 2009 more than $13 million in advances were not collected. so he's ordering the state to clear future advances within 30 days of being issued, and if it's not paid back, the amount will be deducted from the employee's next paycheck. are you trying to lose some weight? >> is there one exercise

new this morning, today in tiburon, a new alert system is being launched. we have a look at how these sirens will work. good morning, paul. >> reporter: it's called the snap system. they will set them off at 1:00 for the first time. this is all to keep the city of tiburon safe. cleave, talk to me about -- chief, talk to me. >> the biggest thing in this area is preparedness for a number of natural disasters from earthquakes, tsunami, extreme weather, man made events. the snap system is to notify and aletter visitors to tune to our am station which is suited towards giving out information

there's new evidence the recession has been especially difficult for young people. a poll shows one third of desalts under the age of 25 and who are not in school have full-time jobs. less than one quarter are working full time. the have the majority have some experience and a high school di low a. 75% want to return to school. today city leaders in san francisco could approve one of the biggest development products in years but critics are raising safety concerns. pam cook explains from our newsroom. >> approval of the $1.5 billion project on treasure island could come today. the san francisco planning commission will look over the plans today that call for town -- homes.

if the commission approves it it will go to the board of supervisor. the critics say this will have an impact on the already crowded bay bridge. taking a look at the bay bridge, as we've been telling you traffic is jammed at the toll plaza. this brand-new neighborhood is expected to add 19,000 people to treasure island's population, and an estimated 5,000 will be commuting. the proposal calls for extending bus service on the island and creating ferry service to the area. the other concern is that the area was built with sand back in 1937, and critics say it could easily turn to jelly during an earthquake as the marina did during the quake. the budget crunch in california is also having an impact. the developers had to eliminate 400 affordable housing units

after governor brown's plan to cut predevelopment funds. we'll be watching thissals the san francisco planning commission take has look at this on treasure island. i'm pam cook. let's go back over to dave. more bad introduce from texas where wildfires continue to burn out of control. a fighter critically injured while battling a fire north of amarillo has now died. he is the second texas firefighter to die in the line of duty in the past couple of months. disastrous wildfires in texas have burned more than a million and a half acres since the beginning of this year. also in texas investigators are investigating the fatal shooting of a golfer after his dog ran into a neighbor's yard. 5-year-old shellman smith went to investigate the shooting of his dog. they say the man who shot the dog then pulled the trigger on smith. he died at the hospital, and an

investigation continues. nine buildings have been destroyed after a night of riots in sydney, australia. australian police said on wednesday night about 100 rioters climbed up on the rooftops of several buildings at an immigration retention building and set fierls-- fires. no one was killed or injured. rescue operations are underway in bangledesh. authorities vai about 100 people were on board and that at least 24 were killed. some swam ashore but many passengers were sleeping. divers were called in to check for anyone who may have been trapped inside. the cargo ship capsized a few days ago and had not been removed. right four two army generals
