not found 20 offenders living in one home. >> reporter: they found evidence they got one of -- that got one of these rearrested. >> sheriff's office, sheriff's office. >> reporter: more than a dozens registered sex offenders list this single place in alameda as their address. one man allowed us inside. our cameras were rolling as officers arrested this man. they wouldn't name him but they said they found pornography on his computer. that alone is a conviction, because he had already been

arrested. they say tight funding makes operations of this size only possible a few times a year. agents insist it's critical to public safety even if most of the offenders they check like this man is not in violation. >> there's a lot of us that are not a threat to anybody. >> you understand why they have to do these checks. >> totally understand, i respect what they are doing. >> reporter: agents say there are about 3,500 registers sex offenders in all of santa clara county. they plan to check on 40 of them tonight. day say in most cases they find about 10 to 20% of the guys they check are in violation and get rearrested. we're live in santa clara, eric rasmussen. police tell us theyadeline oakland to the sound of gunshots and people running.

heavily armed officers set up a perimeter around the area. they found one man suffering from several gunshot wounds. we first brought you this story as it was developing on ktvu news at 5:00. since then we learned the victim did survive. pg & e announced it's top executive is stepping down. the departure comes six months after the san bruno disaster exposed problems with the utility's natural gas distribution line. peter darby has been chairman, chief executive and president. he is to leave at the end of this month with a 35 million retirement package. pg &, has acknowledged it has been a quote challenging year. last september's gas pipeline explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 san bruno home. the utility says it hopes to regain the lost confidence of its customers. as part of that effort, pg & e is sending letters to customers telling them how

close they live to natural gas lines. anyone within 2,000 feet of a pipeline should receive a notice. the letters do not reveal anything about a pipeline's condition. they are concentrated in the east bay, livermore, fremont, pleasantton and fremont with one risky line. and a fire is burning tonight in a warehouse containing millions of the dollars of produce and products. firefighters say it could burn for days. crews have been trying to salvage pallets of apples and cider. >> reporter: firefighters will remain here round the clock working to put out this fire. now we're going to pan over here to show you that smoke

continues to billow out into the night sky. the smoke is still dense even though the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. firefighters say the building is packed with produce and the partial collapsed roof makes it difficult to enter so instead they are using aerial ladders. >> we are able to get water into the warehouse. so it's slowly smoldering. >> reporter: the watson family owns the warehouse. >> we lost about 6,000 bins of apple. in the older portion of it, and there's no place to replace that fruit. >> reporter: martinelli calls the situation a crisis and expects shortages into the summer and probably into the fall. at one point the concern with

that tanks and pipes inside the warehouse contained ammonia used in the refrigeration equipment. but fire officials tell me tonight there is no leak. still the smell of smoke is strong and the fright unsettling for neighbors. >> i kind of got scared at the beginning. i told my husband, oh my god i think there's something going on here. but the fire department called us and told us not to panic. like not to worry. >> reporter: firefighters tell us they won't be able to knock out this fire completely until sunday. and that investigators won't be able to enter the building until early next week. we want to show you some of the apples, juice and cider that were salvaged from this building. a double shooting in the east bay city of pittsburgh. it happened around 6:00 this evening. two people drove the victims in

separate cars to the pittsburgh health center. medics then took the wounded to the hospital. stray bullets were found in the street. we've learned the name of an abloney diver. officials say they initially thought the man drowned. but the man and another diver were in chest deep water when the man collapsed. the victim is identified as 42- year-old jason chung out of south san francisco. a former contra costa sheriff's deputy appeared in court and pled not guilty.

he is accused of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, bribery and weapons charges. he is charged with the case of christopher butler who is accused of stealing and selling stolen drugs. the homicide took place at this apartment complex on buena vista avenue around noon yesterday. so far police have identified the suspect as a 26-year-old hercules man and two 22-year- old men. there is no word tonight on a motive. the victim was a 32-year-old oakland man. the three under arrest face murder charges. across the bay in san francisco, a grieving father spoke out about his son's death. 16-year-old andy zeng was found dead april 10th outside his home. today his father said he doesn't believe andy's death was an accident and he hopes

justice will be done. two teenagers are facing murder charges in connection with the case. president obama is at sony pictures studios in los angeles tonight, for not one, not two but three fundraisers. >> hello l.a. >> reporter: all three events are being held at the studios so the president wouldn't have to move around the city. the presidential motorcade caused delays and had drivers in west will l.a. honking and screaming from their cars. the president wrapped up his trip to the l.a. area this morning. his final event here was a fundraiser breakfast in san francisco's st. regis hotel. the president also made a stop in reno today. he discussed the economy and budget. some promising news tonight for college graduates. there are signs that the job market for grads is improving for the first time since the

economic slump. ktvu's christien kafton reports from the berkeley campus where recruiters were out in force. >> reporter: competition is fierce on the uc berkeley campus and not just for grades. students looking to get ahead in the job market made their way to the just in time job fair where recruiters are looking to fill open positions soon. this year organizers say prospects for new grads are looking good. >> we're seeing an uptake on recruiting here on campus and at the job's fair. >> reporter: universities find that companies are looking to hire 20% more college graduates than in the past. companies like magoosh which offers high tech test grads.

protesters turned out in san rafael tonight to try to sway the vote on a controversial new target store. debra villalon is live now where a packed public meeting has been under way now for four hours. >> reporter: it's been debated but not decided. that is the crowded floor in the lobby. the council room is too full

for fire officials to lets anyone else in. this target store has been looking for approval to be built, and today they lack only three votes. opponents say the big chain store will hurt small business. san rafael leaders know at reelection that could make them targets. >> nine out of 10 of these cards support this project. pretty great. >> it doesn't take a brain surgeon that if target is going to generate $55 million in sales it's going to come at someone elses expense. >> reporter: what protesters see is another type of green.

scheduled cuts but higher fares are on the way. it also voted to close a $3.5 million budget deficit with a one time only transfer of capital funds to its operating budget. that should avoid service cuts. the deal needs final approval from the metropolitan transportation commission. jackson was 84 years old, the kendall jackson winery and its featured chardonnay made him billions of the dollars. animal control officers in morgan hill are trying to catch a mountain lion tonight. a trap is set off west dunn avenue where a mountain lion killed a sheep yesterday. crews are using that sheep's caucus as bait. a homeowner told ktvu news that

a mountain lion has killed three of her sheep this month. a search is on for a sea gull with part of a beer can wrapped around it neck. wildlife rescuers searched around the palace of fine arts where the bird was spotted earlier this week but there was no sign of it. they worry the gull is distressed and they say there's no way the sea gull could have done it on itself. >> there was no way it could have done it on itself. someone did it purposely. they captured the sea gull and did it purposely. a santa clara judge has set a date to sentence paul garcia. he is to learn his fate on december 22nd. he was found guilty last fault

but his attorney withdrew from his case. garcia is appealing. he denies being the master mind of the achilli killing. >> reporter: mi pueblo was busy today with families buying groceries for easter. and laid off workers have promised not to eat until saturday morning. >> i lose everything. you know i got five kids and i don't have money right now to feed them. >> reporter: a coalition of community groups says mi pueblo laid off 300 workers and told them the lay off was due to low sales. but mi pueblo is opening new

stores. >> what we see is a maneuver to increase profits. >> reporter: but a spokeswoman for mi pueblo says the group is making false claims. she says the lay offs equal 150 spread out of the chain. >> organization who don't become more efficient are no longer here to tell their story. >> reporter: so the hunger strike is on. >> we know there's concerns and we're aware of them. but the workers are willing to take the risks. >> reporter: the workers plan to go home tonight, resume their hunger strike and return tomorrow. here is what it looked like last month when storms washed away the pavement atop a steep

see on 2, an historic hotel is turned into a disaster zone. david stevenson shows us why firefighters are tearing apart san francisco cathedral hill hotel. >> reporter: the call came in just after 1:30 this afternoon, a fire in the closed down cathedral hill hotel. but the flames on the upper floor are fake. it's part of a 3 -week-old program using a real hotel to help firefighters navigate a high rise. the cathedral hill hotel opened at the jack tarr hotel in the 1960.

apple has a tracking system. some social networking sites are down tonight because of problems with amazon.com. amazon rents computer and data storage to other sites. the problems began this morning at a data center run by amazon. there's no word when those sites will be up and running again. the maker of a fire fox web browser is opening an office in a historic bay area building. mozila is a nonprofit company, a company spokesman says the new location will house about 125 new employees. on wall street, stocks advanced for a third straight session today. the dow rose 53 points, nasdaq was up one.

demolition work began today. crews went to work at hanger one. they are dismantling the walls and roof of that gigantic building. the building covers the equivalent of 10 football fields. it contains lead and asbestos so it's being stripped down to its steel frame. whether or not it'll be rebuilt depends on congress finding the money to fund the project. new word on the progress of a huge bay area development. a typo just came down this evening. we'll have the latest on redeveloping treasure island. and two journalists have brought up concerns here about journalists in libya. concerns about the profession as a whole.

a green light tonight for a major development project at treasure island. within the hour the san francisco planning commission voted in favor of the developers environment impact report. the vote was 4-3. jana katsuyama is live now in the city and says a lot of money and jobs are at stake. >> reporter: this commission is still inside city hall right now finishing off the meeting. let me tell you by the size of the crowd tonight it's clear that there is still a lot of controversy. treasure island is a bay area gem with stunning views and tons of open space. for years, plans have moved to develop near by yerba buena island. >> i think it's a great idea. the people of treasure island need more grocery stores, just

more development. >> reporter: the $1.5 billion project includes creating 8,000 housing units, 25% being affordable housing plus retail, commercial and office space. a hotel, parks and a ferry terminal. >> it's hopeful that this is going to be self-funded as much as possible. that's the big advantage of it. tonight prior to the planning commissioner's vote on the environmental impact pact report, dozens of people lined up to give testimony lasting more than an hour. most spoke in favor of the plan and construction and jobs it's going to produce. others talked about the concerns of high rise esthetics and relocation of current residents. >> please don't make me a victim. >> they can't be bringing more cars out here. there's only so much that

bridge can support. >> reporter: this project still needs final approval now by the board of supervisors. but if it does pass, construction could take 15 to 20 years. reporting live in san francisco, jana katsuyama ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco drivers have a new way to find an open parking spot. today the city debuts the smart phone app. the free app invites drivers to open meters, parks spots and garages. officials say they don't want people to use the app if they're driving. >> reporter: if you're moving more than 5 miles per hour a warning goes up. but it doesn't disable your device. >> even if people are not texting, they could still be ticketed for distracted driving.

surveillance photos were taken at a 7/11 store. at the time of this picture, giovanni fergosa was fatally shot at a car outside of the store. officers are hoping to talk to witnesses including the people in this picture. anyone with information is asked to call vallejo police. a train struck and killed a man this morning. a capital corridor train struck the man outside of the station. the train was held for about one hour and 40 minutes. fairfield police say the victim was a transient. they have not released his name. police at uc san francisco are looking for a man with unusual piercings who is wanted for sexually assaulting a woman. police released this sketch around 1:00 tonight. police say the man has a black

volunteers from 36 states are helping to fight a series of wildfires in texas. the flames have now burned almost 2 million acres and destroyed at least 370 homes. today mourners attended funeral services for two firefighters who died battling the fire. texas governor rick perry is asking texas to pray for rain. sirens sounded in tiburon this afternoon. as john fowler reports, it was the first blast of a new tsunami disaster warning system. >> reporter: at three minutes after 1:00 it barely raised an

this area: >> reporter: officials tell us today's sirens was not loud enough. they plan to install more towers for the system like this one. john fowler ktvu channel 2 news. san jose's butcher park is open to dogs again following the mysterious death of a family pet that was on this newscast next sunday. the city first reported that the city closed the park after a dog became sick and died. veterinarians suspected that the dog had been poisoned. tests however found no trace of poisoning. authorities say they cleaned the park and they are confident it is safe. and the weekend, getting here pretty court quick. this week flew by. there might even be some sprinkles out there in those clouds. but nothing big. the computer models are pulling back on the rain chances this

weekend. there are rain chances. sprinkle chances but not as aggressive as it looked for the last night at this time. we have a ways to go. things could change tomorrow. the satellite just shows the clouds coming off the pacific. the system that was around today that went through last night. we got rain. some places got .25 of an inch. this is what we're contending with now. it's another very weak system. probably weaker than it was last night. it rolls in here late on friday. maybe a sprinkle on friday night. most likely not most neighbors. maybe a few neighbors in the north bay. then saturday more light sprinkle chances. we'll see that in the computer model comes up. for saturday 57 degrees for a daytime high. good air quality and partly cloudy, partly sunny. that's the story. a lot of cloud cover. with that cloud cover will come a little bit of instability. i have to put that in the forecast. i know everybody -- it's a big
