the city of san carlos is considering a plan to privatize a fire department and this morning firefighters are fighting back. they plan to go door-to-door to tell residents about that plan. a tornado rips through st. louis, homes are destroyed, the airport is closed this morning. the cleanup is underway. scattered showers in your forecast, what you can expect for your easter weekend, coming up. good morning, everyone.

welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday april 23rd. >> we will remain cool for this time of year, we'll remain mostly cloudy today, even a few scattered showers in the forecast. the good news here, by tomorrow, at least tomorrow afternoon, partly cloudy skies and mainly dry. so, a few sprinkles in store for today. afternoon will bring us the scattered chance as well. gray skies in the forecast, we'll look at temperatures into the afternoon and we'll show you those latest models coming up in a few moments. firefighters in the peninsula are fighting to save their jobs as the city of san carlos is looking to save money and consolidate the department. ktvus allie rasmus is live in san carlos. >> reporter: the city of san carlos is said to make big decisions come monday.

san carlos firefighters say they want to make sure residents know about that proposal, so a little later on this morning, we're expecting to see as many as 100 firefighters gather inning parking lot. they'll go door-to-door in the neighborhoods to let residents know about the city's proposal and they're also going to ask those residents to support the firefighters at a public hearing in city council meeting monday night. right now, the city of san carlos and belmont share their fire departments. last year, san carlos city leaders gave notice they wanted to end that agreement so save money. we interviewed the mayor of san carlos early this morning, he explained the city has a $3.5 million deficit. the city has three options. it can either create its own stand alone fire department, it can consolidate with the redwood city fire department or it could shut to down the fire department completely. the mayor told us a little about that company.

>> they have not done cities in california. they have subsidiaries that do cities throughout europe, they do military bases, they do airports, a number of things that are interesting. i wouldn't dismiss their ability to provide services to the city. >> firefighters disagree with that. they say whacken hunt corporation has little experience providing city fire services. if you put a for-profit company in charge of public safety, residents won't get the same level of service. you'll hear directly from some of the san carlos firefighters that plan to be out here later on this morning. two people are in the hospital this morning after overnight car crash. it happened around 12:30 a.m. on alameda in san mateo. they were driving south when they got to the intersection on paris avenue, crossed over into

the northbound lane, hit a light pole and crashed into bushes. both were taken to sanford hospital. police are still investigating, but say alcohol was a factor in that accident. >> oakland firefighters battling a house fire this morning, stumbled into a marijuana grow operation. the fire started just before 2:00 a.m. at a home on arlington avenue in oakland. firefighters knocked down the flames in just about ten minutes. oakland police arrived on scene soon after the growing operation was discovered. no one was located inside the house, the cause of that fire has not been determined. 60 residents of a berkeley apartment building were evacuated this morning after a dumpster caught fire underneath their building. it started on hay street in the parking structure underneath the apartments. firefighters were able to get the fire out quickly. residents were allowed back inside the building, shortly after 1:00 a.m. no injuries were reported. a st. louis airport is

closed this morning after an apparent tornado ripped through that area. strong winds hit yesterday, tearing the roof of a terminal and blowing out plate glass windows. cars and debris were shattered all over the airport. one woman with her young daughter was suddenly lifted off the ground by the wind and that also shattered her windows. >> if the plastic came in and hit her, a grabbed her out of the car seat and put her in my lap in the front seat and bent over and held onto her until the wind calmed down and we got out and ran inside. >> at least five people were injured by flying debris. two planes were stranded on the tarmac. passengers were taken away by buses. the airport will be closed indefinitely for repairs. at least 20 homes nearby were damaged by those same strong winds. in maryland heights, when the winds die down, they emerge from shelters to find everything destroyed. a local utility company has reported 39,000 customers without power. there are unconfirmed reports

that tornados touched down in several counties in the st. louis area. all part of the same series of storms that struck central and eastern missouri yesterday. storms in st. louis are causing problems with air travel until the bay area. here's a live look at san jose airport, no delays there, but problems are being reported at san francisco international. two flights have been cancelled. oakland doesn't have any direct flights to st. louis. >> pg&e customers will be picking up part of the tab for the retirement of the outgoing ceo. peter darby is expected to receive $35 million when he steps out of position this month. 1/3 of that will be paid for by rate payers. customers shouldn't pay for one cent of darby's retirement package. brown says at a time of

financial hardships corporations should reign in corporations. pg&e was ordered to turn over document following the pipeline explosion in san bruno. pg&e is asking regulators to accept assumptions about older pipe lines. san francisco muni drivers have authorized a strike. dennis herrera will fight any attempt to walk off the job. the union representing the drivers of 2200 bus and light rail vehicles voted to give leaders the power to call a strike. they say a strike would only happen if labor negotiations break down. herrara says muni operators are prohibited from stopping work under their current contracts. he is threatening legal action if the drivers decide to strike. the vote to strike comes after two recent incident involving muni operators. this is video of a muni driver

from february, texting while driving a bus. the video was taken by a passenger who recorded the driver in the rear view mirror. that same passenger spotted the same driver on thursday back behind the wheel of a bus. muni officials told ktvu they fired the driver when she showed up for work. muni management is still investigating why she was still allowed to drive the bus on thursday. a light rail train operator has been placed on non-driving status after operating a train with an open door. the video of the l-line was posted yesterday on youtube by a passenger. it happened on thursday, after the train left the westportal station. muni spokesman told us they reviewed the video. similar accidents occurred earlier this month . the easter bunny is coming a day early in oakland. a free easter egg hunt event will be held on webster street. free lunches for the kids,

coach. joseph martinez died last week after falling at his home in san jose. he coached the boys and girls swimming teams and water pole polo team. the medical examiner says it could take up to six weeks to figure out how he died. another protest is planned today at the site of what native-american tribal leaders call a burial site. tribal members say the area is a final resting place of many of their north american ancestors. they say some graves date back 3500 years. protests have been ongoing at that site for more than a week and today's event will begin at 1:00 p.m.. skyrocketing gas prices have drivers very frustrated out there. what the president said this morning about possible solutions. the maker of a popular video game system is forcing some gamers to put their controllers down. let's give you a live look. golden gate bridge, we have a

welcome back, good morning to you. giving a look at widespread gray out there for today. temperatures will be cooler in the afternoon. marin county is looking for volunteers to help clean up their part of the earth, going on from 9:00 to noon, residents, visitors and businesses will be removing litter from beaches, parks and creeks and graffiti from public buildings. last year more than 8,000 pounds of trash was collected from

volunteers. firefighters in watsonville are staying on the scene of a fire at the martinelli's warehouse until tomorrow. there's no word on what caused that fire. that building houses millions of dollars worth of apples, juices and cider from the company. they managed to salvage some of the product but the losses are extensive. people in texas are getting a firsthand look at the damage caused by those devastating wildfires. some residents were allowed to return home for eight hours yesterday to sit through the damage of their homes. at one point, more than 200 cars were lined up at security checkpoints where they had to show proof of residency to enter the neighborhoods. once they did enter, some people discovered exactly what they thought they would. >> we expected the worst. it was as bad as we thought.

we went to our condo first, it was unscathed. absolute devastation. high humidity helped firefighters yesterday. forecast of strong wind gusts could fan the flames today. two firefighters have been killed fighting the fires, which have now burns more than 1.4 million acres. president obama is talking about problems at the pump. >> whenever gas prices shoot up, like clock work, you see politicians racing to the cameras, waving three-point plans for $2 gas. you see people trying to grab headlines or score a few points. there's no silver bullet that can bring down gas prices right away. >> he says the key to relieving costly gas prices is to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and boston u.s. production. he's also launched a task force to root out activity in the oil markets and wants to end the $4 billion in tax subsidies to oil and gas companies. pessimism in the country is

on the rise. the poll from the new york times says 70% of americans believe the country is headed on the wrong tracks. that's up six points from last month and 12 points from february. only 26% of americans believe the country is headed in the right direction. the poll comes as gas prices continue to go up and as congress continues to fight over that budget. real estate mogul and possible presidential candidate donald trump doesn't appear to be a fan of primaries. records from new york city's board of elections said don trump didn't vote in a single primary election in the last 21 years. the last primary he did cast a ballot was new york city primary for mayor when rudi giuliani won. it looks like general motors could once again claim the title of the world's largest automaker. right now, sales for the american automaker are up, both here at home and in china. the sales boost comes as current

number one automaker toyota tries to recover from several set backs. the recent japanese earthquake and major safety recalls affected sales for the japanese automaker. gm held the spot from 1932 to 2008. sony says an external intrusion is behind the ongoing outage of its playstation networks. the system links gamers worldwide giving them a chance to play each other live on playstations. users have been without service since wednesday. it could take a few days to get the system working again. the playstation network had 70 million registered users. the search is on for a missing 11-year-old boy at king's canyon national park. it's located an hour east of fresno. the boy went missing sometime yesterday, the sheriffs department did launch its helicopter last night to help in the search, but the pilot had to turn around due to stormy weather. police in southern california are trying to figure

out how a 1-year-old boy became trapped inside a running washing machine. the boy's mother, grandmother and aunt were washing clothes together. the aunt placed the boy in the washing machine while playing with him. the door locked and went into the spin and wash mode. >> he was crying. blood on his face, poor baby. he was shaking. >> the toddler was only in the machine for a few seconds, but it was enough to cause injuries. he's still in the hospital in stable condition. good samaritans used a crow bar to get him out of the machine. police are now launching a criminal investigation into child neglect. business is booming at the court of oakland at demand for bottled water grows. clouds, clouds and more clouds. more this morning, touching off a few light scattered showers. giving you a look at the was area there, what you can expect

crippled by the earthquake and tsunami. it's been six weeks since people were evacuated from the area. most have been living in government shelters and are running low on money. the government says they're facing a huge financial burden. here's what a sudden surge in exports of bottled water to japan. there's still concern in that country about the safety of tap water following last month's earthquake and nuclear disaster. some bottled water plants in japan are running 24/7 and still can't produce enough. exporters are scrambling to ship out bottled water to them. >> it's a significant surge in exports. we'll find out later this year, more of the details in terms of where exactly the commodities are moving to. $3.4 billion passed on their way

legitimately say is that it has to be a government service. i don't buy that argument. >> coming up later on this morning, we're expecting to see a group of firefighters meeting in this parking lot. the firefighter representative says most get off their shift at 8:00, and they plan to meet her as soon as their work shift is over this morning. more than 600 city employees in san jose may lose their jobs by the end of june. san jose officials are expected to notify the workers of the pending layoffs next week. the city is trying to close $115 million budget deficit. the council originally requested a 10% pay cut and reduced pensions for employees, but only four of the cities 11 employee unions agreed to the requested salary cuts. education was among the top concerns for business leaders at an economic summit in san jose. governor jerry brown met with a number of silicon valley ceos to

discuss what they need to succeed. brown sat on a panel alongside executives from facebook and applied materials, many of the executives told brown that they worry the future generation is not being prepared. >> in order to turn out the engineers that pumping and mining, we have to have, you know, basic math and science learned in this, from the beginning. >> a recent survey shows that 2/3 of silicon valley companies added jobs over the past year and more than half expect to hire more this year. >> investigators around the country are looking for possible victims of suspected serial killer joseph naso. he appeared in court last week. he's charged with killing four women in northern california in the 1970s and 80s. investigators are looking at unsolved cases with a similar mo. he's accused of strangling women and dumping their bodies in rural areas. all of his victims had the same

initials in their first and last name. a woman is facing child endangerment charges after she left her toddler inside a parked car while she gambled. police arrested 25-year-old maria sycan in san jose. her 3-year-old daughter was strapped inside the car with the doors locked and rear windows cracked. even if it's in the lop 60s outside, the temperature inside the car could rise to over 100 degrees. >> children's bodies heat up faster than an adult. >> police said the child was hot and sweating, but is doing okay. she was later released to her father. casino gamblers showed her playing cars while her daughter was in the car for at least 30 minutes. funeral services will begin at 9:00 this morning for

16-year-old andy zeng. another boy is charged in connection with his death, but they say the shooting was an accident. police are investigating the death of a bicyclist, the body of 58-year-old bradley basham was found in contra costa county. he might have had an accident while riding his bicycle, however investigators are working with the coroner's office to determine his exact cause of death. robbery may have been the motive in a violent attack in golden gate park. a 58-year-old homeless man was pistol-whipped on thursday night in a relatively isolated part of the parks. after the suspects attacked the man, they burned his pen down. three men and a woman who may be transient. >> what really concerns me is that a person up here by themselves can be set upon or

victimized and no one will hear their screams. >> park officials are pushing for a nighttime curfew to close the park during certain hours. it's not clear if or when that curfew legislation will be taken up by the board of supervisors. there'll be a screen egg-stravagfkanza and plenty of food. there'll be a cookoff starting at 1:00. out for an easter egg hunt, bring along the sweaters to go over those easter dresses. we're giving a look. san francisco here, plenty of gray sky overhead. that will help to keep our temperatures below average this time of year. we're waking up warmer than where we started yesterday.

yuma arizona. after the roof ripped open mid-flight. since then, investigators have been busy inspecting the plane. now several media reports say the roof might have opened because of problems with the plane's skin. investigators say the skin has signs of distress which could have resulted in the cracking. boeing isn't saying much about the new report, however saying the investigation continues. another scare in the air is being blamed on toilet paper. yesterday someone aboard an alaska airlines flight bound for orange county, made what they thought was a suspicious discovery in the plane's bathroom. that person notified the flight crew. emergency crews were standing by when the plane landed. the suspicious substance was just toilet paper. two abalone divers died along the coast in the past two

days. one man's diving partner found him face down in the water. a helicopter lifted him to the top of the cliff. paramedics were unable to revive him. another diver died of a heart attack in the park. scientists are looking to find out why dead and dying sharks are washing up along the bay. we were joined by captain greer and her son, the first to spot a struggling leopard shark that came up on the beach. >> it was acting kind of strangely. it had its head kind of beached and its tail in the water, about a three, and a half foot shark. we also spotted a dead eel. it seemed confused close to the shore. it could be a result of human caused fort lewis or the sharks could have just been trapped at

low tide. if you bought a lottery ticket in san bruno recently, you might want to check it. a ticket worth $227,000 has yet to be claimed. it was purchased as a shell gas station in san bruno. the winning ticket matched five numbers. was only missing the mega number of 31. the winner has six months from the purchase date to claim that ticket. well, students at state schools are frustrated by budget cuts. some are just ditching the school system completely. we'll talk about that trend when we talk live with the vice president of csu east bay next. highway 24, lafayette, things looking smooth in both directions on this saturday morning.

we start the day in oakland, 51 degrees. traveling carnivals. an environmental group is criticizing apple's new data facility in north carolina. the organization says it created risk to the environment. >> i believe running the plant on renewable energy would bring more jobs. several tech companies rely on

cloud computing. including how the company's offset their energy use. twitter announced the decision yesterday by tweeting it. the company is expected to move into the former furniture mart building next year. some staples in san francisco's north beach neighborhood are about to change direction. six businesses including big als and the crow bar are being transformed while new ones are being opened. big al's which once sold adult videos and magazines will be a grocery store while the new owners of the crow bar plan to convert it into a restaurant and billiards room. it's all part of an effort to attract anywhere business and a different crowd. >> it does get rougher on friday and saturday nights, that's not to say that can't be changed.

a new lounge opened just about two weeks ago. owners say they plan on enforcing a strict dress code and playing music geared toward an older crowd. the new business owners want to bring a revived energy to the neighborhood and provide people with a safe and fun night life. it is crunch time at csu and uc systems. both systems are turning students away. >> csu is going to reject 10,000 csu students. linda is vice president of planning and enrollment management and student affairs. good morning, linda. tell me, what is the situation, are you guys turning away lots of students? are you seeing lots of students

transferring out? >> we certainly aren't able to admit, the impact on our campus is about 1,000 students. if you want to put that in perspective. >> can you talk about what the campus is doing to make sure that those students do not transfer out? i know you said they're not right now, but are there steps being taken to make sure that doesn't happen? >> they can get classes they need to graduate. >> is there any hope you can offer? you talk about students finding classes. that's a frustration when there aren't budget cuts. long-term, as you prepare for the future, what can you offer in terms of advice and just a look at the situation? >> advice to the students is to

with tilikum at all. 7:52. eliminated american idol contestant thea mageea is coming to mountain house today. the city is planning a festival in the park with food vendors and a band. thea will make an appearance in tracy to meet fans. this summer she is going to be back on the road as part of the idol tour. lindsey lohan is out on bail this morning after being sentenced to 120 days in jail. she was released on $75,000 bail around 9:30 last night. earlier a judge sentenced her to 480 hours of community service. the final sprinkles of the season appear to be making their way into the bay area. let's check with rosemary to see how long the sprinkles will be

tonight the fresno grizzlies, minor league baseball team will sell special brian stone bracelets. the grizzlies are also donating some ticket sales to the fund. know is still in a coma after suffering a severe skull fracture. the team is going to collect donations for stow's medical fund for their game versus the nuts. volunteers will be on hand to help out. that is the company where brian stow works as a paramedic. sacramento kings in capital city for now. team owners were considering a move to anaheim. sacramento mayor kevin johnson has made several promises to keep the team. they include a new basketball arena downtown and purchase of luxury suites and season tickets

by local businesses. >> everybody making a decision that sacramento's a viability market. >> the kings have been in sacramento since 1985 when they moved from kansas city. two people are in the hospital this morning after an overnight crash in san mateo. what investigators are saying about that crash this morning. and firefighters are getting ready to camp at the peninsula. the important message they're trying to get out this morning.

>> we saw meteorologist rosemary going. there she is again with a look at the easter weekend forecast. >> good morning to you, spotty showers in the forecast for today. we will be drier for tomorrow. we have good news there. as we move through the afternoon, we are looking at mostly cloudy skies. this morning, we're a little warmer than yesterday. by the afternoon, we'll be cooler. again, a few sprinkles possible. you may need the umbrella. keep it handy, shouldn't be a big deal. main event on sunday, looks partly cloudy. in overnight news, two people are in the hospital this morning after a car crash, police say was caused by alcohol. it happened around 12:30 a.m. on alameda in san mateo. the car was headed south on that street. it crossed the intersection and ended up in the northbound lane. the car hit a light pole before crashing into bushes.

the fire started just before 2:00 a.m. oakland police arrived on scene after the growing operation was discovered. no one was found inside the house and the cause of that fire hasn't yet been determined. lambert st. louis international airport is closed indefinitely after an apparent tornado ripped through the area. the strong winds hit yesterday, tearing the roof of a terminal and blowing out plate glass windows. cars and debris were scattered all over the area. >> plastic came in and hit her. a grabbed her out of the car seat, put her in my lap and bent over and held onto her until the wind calmed down. >> at least five people were

injured by flying debris. all of the flights were diverted. the airport will remain closed for repairs. and the same strong winds damage at least 20 homes in nearby communities in maryland heights. people say when the wind died down, they emerged from shelters to find everything destroyed. local utility company is reporting at least 39,000 customers without power. there are unconfirmed reports that tornado also touched down in several counties in the st. louis area. it was all part of a series of storms that struck central and eastern missouri yesterday. want to show you a live look at san jose international. no flight delays being reported there. san francisco international is reporting two flight cancellations. oakland doesn't have any direct flights to st. louis at this time. the search is on for a missing 11-year-old boy at

king's canyon national park. the park is located about an hour east of fresno. the fresno county sheriffs office says the boy went missing sometime yesterday. deputies won't say how he went missing, but a helicopter was launched to help look for the boy. the helicopter had to be turned around because of bad weather. the southwest airlines boeing 737 bound for sacramento made an emergency landing in yuma arizona after the roof ripped open mid-flight. since then, investigators have been busy inspecting the plane. the roof might have opened because of problems with the plane's skin. investigators say the skin has signed of stress, which could have resulted in cracking. boeing isn't saying much about this new report, only that the investigation continues. another scare in the air is being blamed on toilet paper. yesterday someone aboard an alaska airlines flight bound for

orange county made what they thought was a suspicious discovery in the plane's bathroom. flight crew and emergency crews were standing by them when the plane landed in santa ana. 151 passengers on board deplaned. crews quickly determined that the suspicious substance appeared to be nothing more than toilet paper. san francisco muni drivers have authorized a strike. yesterday the union representing 2200 bus and light rail vehicles voted to give leaders the power to call a strike. they say the strike would only happen if labor negotiations were down. muni operators are prohibited from stopping work under their current contracts. he is threatening legal action if workers decide to strike. that vote comes after two recent incidents involving muni drivers. we don't have that video for you. the video was taken by a passenger who recorded the driver in a rear view mere.

there it is. the passenger spotted her on thursday back behind the wheel of a bus. officials say they fired the driver when she showed up to work, but muni management is investigating why she was allowed to drive the bus on thursday. this is video of the l line. yesterday on youtube by a pastor. it happened on thursday after the train left the westportal station. they used the video and are investigating the situation. a similar incident happened earlier this month. firefighters along the peninsula are taking to the streets this morning. allie rasmus is live in san carlos with what these drivers are trying to prevent. >> reporter: the city is considering a proposal to privatize its fire department. it could make a decision about that proposals early as this monday. that's why firefighters from san carlos and various other fire departments from across the bay

area are gathering here. they're talking about the proposal. firefighters have also taken out a pull page ad in the san mateo county daily journal and another paper. the cities of san carlos and belmont share their fire services. one of the things that firefighters will be asking for is when people, any residents who oppose this privatization plan should come and support them at a city council meeting. share their fire services. last year, san carlos city leaders gave notice they wanted to end that agreement to save money. stand alone fire department. it can consolidate with the redwood city fire department or shut down the fire department and contract with the private security company called whackenhunt corporation. that's the option firefighters are most concerned about, not just because of their jobs, but because they say whackenhunt is primarily a security firm and doesn't have much experience in putting the company in front of

private safety isn't a good idea. >> you know, the one-time they did was in florida, that we've been able to find and identify. they were, their contract was terminated within seven months after the death of a firefighter. >> we interviewed the mayor of san carlos this morning, he says the city is facing a $3.5 million budget deficit. the city has to consider all options. >> i don't know that you can legitimately say the only way to ensure quality service is that it has to be a government service. i don't buy that argument. one of the other things firefighters are concerned about is this proposal to privatize the fire department came forward to the state council at the beginning of this month. residents here don't really have enough information. that's why they'll be going door-to-door later on this morning. handing out flyers. they've taken out pull page ads.

to inspect the houses and residences through the day to make sure there's no structural damage, make sure people, when they come back to their houses, need to be a safe environment. also, the red cross is going to be centered in maryland heights. that number is 211 if anyone needs shelter. maryland heights with the red cross. that's very, very important. also, we have assessed the damage with the helicopter, doing an outstanding job, making sure we get all this. we don't know the extent of the damage at this point. how it impacts st. louis county, but the best news is, no one lost their life, we're still going to move forward, but we realized his families are devastated. our hearts go out to individual. volunteers, eeoc in st. louis county is open. and operational, we're going to do whatever we can to make this happen and go away, but the most things is, the city, the county,

the country is headed on the wrong track. up six points from last month and 12 points from february. 26% of americans believe the country is headed in the right direction. the poll comes as gas prices continue to go up. another new poll shows potential trouble for president obama in next year's presidential race. the pole by dartmouth college says the president would lose the swing state of new hampshire if mitt romney is republican nominee. the poll shows recommend knee leading mr. obama 47% to 39%. the president's approval numbers are trailing badly in the state. only 36 of the voters in new hampshire approve of the job he's doing. real estate mogul and possible presidential candidate donald trump has a spotty voting record. records from new york city's board of elections show he didn't vote in a single primary election in the last 21 years. the last primary election he cast a ballot was in 1989 for the new york city primary when

part of the cap for the retirement of the outgoing ceo peter darby is set to receive $135 million once he steps down this month. regulators say 1/3 of that will be paid by rate payers. governor jerry brown is criticizing that move saying customers shouldn't pay 1 cent of darby's retirement package. corporations should reign in executive compensations. pg&e says it may never find the records to some of its older natural gas lines. according to the san francisco chronicle, pg&e is now asking regulators to accept assumptions by older pipe lines. the commission has yet to respond to that request. new numbers show the ceo of continental airlines is getting

a bigger paycheck. the 4.$4.4 million salary includes bonuses, perks and stock options. general motors is likely to become the world's largest automaker. sales for the american automaker are up both here at home and in china. the sales boost comes as current number one toyota tries to recover from several setbacks, both the recent japanese earthquake and major safety recalls have affected sales for the japanese automaker. gm the number one sales stop before toyota from 1932 until 2008. sony says an external intrusion is the reason for the outage on their network. gamers can play each other live on playstation devices. users have been without service since wednesday. sony says it could take a few days to get the system back up

and working again. the playstation network has 70 million registered users. police in southern california are trying to figure out how a 1-year-old boy became trapped inside a running washing machine. the child's mother, grandmother and aunt were washing clothes together. they shut the boy inside the machine. the machine automatically went into the spin and wash mode. >> he was crying, blood on his face, poor baby. all you could see what his chest going up and down really fast. every time he'd open his eyes, his eyes would roll in the back of his head. >> the to the later was only in the machine for seconds, but it was enough to cause injuries. he's still in the hospital, but is in stable condition. good samaritans used a crow bar to get him out of the machine.

the royal wedding is now just six days away, this morning we do have a look at who is set to attend that big event. welcome back to ktvu mornings on 2. we begin with a developing story we've been following since the 10:00 news last night. as we've been reporting, st. louis international airport remains closed because of damage caused by a tornado.

this is new video we received from inside the airport. strong winds blew through the area, shattering windows and tearing off the roof of one of the terminals. at least five people were injured by flying debris. the airport will remain closed indefinitely for repairs. the big storm in st. louis is causing cancellations in the bay area. want to show you a live look at san jose international. no flight delays reported there. france international, they're reporting two flight cancellations. oakland doesn't have direct flights to st. louis. >> well, we now know who is going to be attending the royal wedding. the guest list was finalized and sent out by the royal family today. some of the more recognized names on the list include soccer star david beckham and his wife victoria, sir elton john and guy richie will be attending. singer joss stone and mr. bean. not everyone at the wedding is

going to have an invitation. a radical muslim leader is planning to protest outside of westminster abbey doing it on behalf of muslims everywhere and says the muslim world will never be solid. >> the queen is the head of the british army. even her grandchildren, including william are being hit by some. >> the protest is expected to be peaceful. tourists have been focusing their attention on westminster abbey and buckingham palace. our coverage does begin early at 2:00 a.m. on friday morning. new video this morning, shows japan's emperor making a rare visit to one of the most devastated areas of his country. this video came into our newsroom overnight shows the emperor and his wife visiting

the prefecture. a couple took time out to talk to people who live in that area. one emotional moment, the emperor offered his condolences to a 72-year-old man whose wife died shortly after the two disasters. for the first time since the quake and tsunami hit six weeks ago, the high speed rail route between tokyo and northeastern part of japan is partially open. the first train started running earlier today. commuters say the return of service is a big step in japan's recovery. the entire rail route should reopen sometime next week. the demand for basic necessities in japan is having a direct impact on business at theport of oakland. there's been a sudden surge of exports to japan. there's concern about the safety of tap water following last month's quake. some bottled water plants in japan are running 24/7 and

cannot produce enough. supreme court exporters are scrambling to ship out bottled water to them. >> i know that we'll find out later this year more of the details in terms of where the commodities were moving to. >> $3.4 billion in u.s. export passed through theport of oakland on their way to japan. bottled water shipments could push those numbers even higher. andy zhang is a france teen, fatally shot earlier this month. a 15-year-old boy has been arrested on murder charges in connection with his death. that teen's lawyers say the shooting was an accident. zeng's father leaves his son was shot intentionally. final services are being held for a popular fremont swim coach. he fell at his home in san jose.

he coached the girls water poler teams. the santa clara county medical has noter said it could take up to six weeks to figure out how he died. the body of 58-year-old bradley basham of pittsburgh was found. preliminary report indicate he might have had an accident while riding his bicycle. san francisco police say robbery may have been the motive in a violent attack in golden gate park. a 50-year-old homeless man was pistol whipped on thursday night in a relatively isolated part of the park. after they attacked the man, they burned his tent down. they're looking for three men and a woman who may be transient. >> a person up here by themselves can be set upon or victimized and no one's going to hear their screams. >> park officials are pushing for a nighttime curfew to close

the park during certain hours, but it's not clear if or when curfew legislation will be taken up again by the board of supervisors. >> some firefighters along the peninsula, ktvu's allie rasmus is live in san carlos with what some are saying. >> reporter: san carlos firefighters are getting ready to start canvassing the neighborhood. some of the stuff they're going to be handing out as they go block to block in the neighborhood. they also have a map set up here, charting the routes they're going to take through the neighborhood here in san carlos. all of this mobilization, because the city of san carlos is considering a proposal to privatize its fire department. it could make a decision as early as monday. when they go door-to-door, they'll be handing out flyers asking residents who oppose the idea to support them at the city council meeting on monday night. firefighters have also taken out

at the martin yell ie martinelli's warehouse until tomorrow. crews were dousing the warehouse with water, yesterday they changed tactics and switched to foam. the building houses millions of dollars worth of apples, berries, juices and cider. they managed to salvage some of the product but losses are extensive. san francisco's north beach neighborhood is undergoing a transformation, thanks to some business owners. businesses, including big al's and the crow bar are being changed. some new ones are being opened. bill al's once sold videos and magazines will now be a grocery store. the new owners plan to convert it into a restaurant and billiards room. it's part of an effort to attract new business and a

rougher crowd. a new lounge called monroe opened two weeks ago. they plan on enforcing a stricken dress code and playing music geared towards older people. they want to bring a revived energy to the neighborhood and provide people with a safe and fun night life. it is official: twitter is keeping headquarters in san francisco. the social networking site is moving to market street between 9th and 10th streets. twitter tweeted the decision. the deal comes after the city's board of supervisors gave twitter a tax break on new hires. the company is expected to move into the former furniture mart next year. apple has invests $1 billion in the new facility, which is expected to create thousands of jobs in that area, but the organization green piece says the data facilities also create a big risk to the environment because the center is mostly powered by coal and nuclear energy. >> yes, jobs are good. i believe that running the plant
