morning. if you have plans outside today, look out for those spring showers. let's get right to rosemary. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that easter egg hunt is going to be a bit soggy. low clouds over the area. you can see storm tracker 2 picking up a few showers. the north bay, light rain falling around a few areas. widespread moisture over areas. we head to the south bay. we have some over fremont this morning. a little bit of light rain falling over san francisco. again, looking at the possibility of a few scattered showers this morning. the afternoon still looks to be our best bet at getting dry weather. we'll take a look in a little bit. at this hour, easter services are getting underway. community groups are also reaching out to people in niese. katy joins us live in san francisco. looks like there's a lot of

activity underway. >> reporter: there is. easter is one of the biggest holidays here. they just let in the first big group of people for the easter breakfast. there's already a line of people getting ready to go in for the next round. we've also seen dozens of people going in to volunteer. we can take you downstairs and show you we caught up with works and volunteers getting things ready to prepare the easter brunch. they are preparing a meal for close to 2,000 people. one of the kitchen coordinators says he's worked in the kitchen for the past four years and says he loves his job but sees the need for these services just keeps growing. >> just walk around this neighborhood. you can tell how much it's needed. it's not homeless people. it's everybody. most of our clients, i'd say, have a place to leave.

morning travelers. pope benedict delivered the mass to about 100,000 people in rome this morning. this year, he said mass from an altar. this year, he stressed the importance of peace and solidarity, urging an end to violence across the world. air traffic at the st. louis airport is returning to normal following a devastating tornado. yesterday, repair crews worked to board up windows and clear debris. the airport opened last night for a handful of flights. officials expect 70% of flights to operate as normal today. we're going to have a live look at that airport coming up in about ten minutes. cleanup efforts are also underway at homes in a nearby neighborhood. about 750 homes were affected in the area. of that number, about 100 aren't safe for people to live

in. crews are still working to restore power to more than 30,000 people. oakland police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run accident. the cyclist was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. police say there is to description of the driver. oakland police are investigating two armed robberies that happened just hours apart. the first one happened on friday just before 4:00 p.m. on gene street. police say a man with a gun walked up to a woman and stole her cell phone. the second robbery happened just before 9:00 friday night on grand avenue. police say a person was robbed by two men, one of who had a gun. crime is apparently down in oakland compared to the same time last year. crimes include assaults, sexual assault, shootings, and rape.

police say the numbers are encouraging but also say there is still too much crime in oakland. a husband of a german tourist killed while visiting san francisco will return to the city this week. police say the gunfire came from a shootout between teenagers at a nearby party. this week, the woman's husband is expected to visit the area with the couple's two sons. a hotel chain and some restaurant chains near the area are offering the couple free meals and a stay. good morning to you. giving you a live look there in san francisco. dealing with plenty of cloud cover out there. low clouds, mid-level clouds, even some fog this morning. the light rain and drizzle falling as well. giving you a look at storm tracker here. it is very hit or miss. all that drizzle out there is

we have been. monday, showers in the forecast. tuesday and wednesday, drying out, warming up, and it looks like we'll hold on to the 70s at least through thursday. if you're going to be out and about today, we have the day planner coming up. all right. time now, 7:08. gabrielle giffords is making progress in her recovery. doctors say she can now stand on her own and even walk a little. she still has limited use of her right arm and leg, but doctors say that is expected because the bullet entered the left side of her brain. giffords was injured in a mass shooting in tucson in january. the alleged gunman has plead not guilty to charges related to that shooting. north korea is making new threats this morning opinion the communist country says it is prepared to destroy its neighbor south korea and the united states. the threat is in response to joint military drills that both the u.s. and south korea took part in earlier this year. north korea has said such drills are acts of war. the latest war rhetoric also

comes on the eve of its army's anniversary. a massive search will begin tomorrow in japan for the bodies of those killed in last month's quake and tsunami. japan is going to send nearly 25,000 soldiers on a land and sea mission to recover the bodies. a team of veterinarians will also be sent to the evacuation zone around the stricken nuclear plant to check on thousands of abandoned animals. this will be the third intensive military search for bodies since last month's disaster. nuclear licensing in california was on one of the topics at an earth day festival in san francisco. people gathered in civic center plaza yesterday. earthquakes and nuclear power plants were among the topics. yesterday, activists had a message. some say we need to explore different kinds of energy. >> think of alternative energy.

good morning to you. giving you a look the at mostly gray sky out there outside oakland today. 63, mostly cloudy in the afternoon. well, planes are once again being allowed to fly in and out of lambert st. louis international airport as cleanup continues after that devastating tornado. >> we want to go live now to meteorologist rick with a closer look. what's in the forecast there as we look ahead? >> reporter: yeah, two great stories. one, the forecast not looking good for a lot of the plains. more storms, more rain, more flooding and the threat of more tornadoes again over the next three days. the cleanup. we're here on the top of the parking deck. no cleanup has happened here. you can look and see cars where all the windows have been blown out. nothing has been done at all to clean up any of this area. all the efforts up to this point have been to get the airport going. that doesn't include the

parking deck. you can see interestingly this terminal 2 sign. i have no idea where this came from, but blown here on top of the parking garage. head over towards this domed building, and you can see some of the windows still blown out. some of the windows have been boarded up. there are people inside. they're expecting to get about 70% of the flights off today. about 30% of them not going. they still have some work to do, but so far all their efforts put into getting the people in the airport so they can take off. >> when we look at that's damage, it's amazing no one was killed. how did the warning system work out there to get people, you know -- some of that video, we saw them running. >> reporter: well, here at the airport, it's amazing that people got inside. with all of the glass blown out here, it's amazing there weren't more injuries. the tornado here was an ef2.

when it struck a mile away, it was an ef4. that's the largest tornado in this country so far this year. 750 homes damaged in the st. louis area. 100 of them are ununhable habitable. it's a miracle there were not fatalities. >> rick, it's mike. i know we spoke to you last weekend when you were at the tornado damage cleanup in the carolinas. what's the biggest difference from your perspective? >> reporter: the one difference here is this damage in st. louis was one tornado. about a 30-mile long path. it was one tornado. what happened last weekend, it ended up being 227 tornadoes. so many tornadoes in so many spots and 40-some fatalities. this one, no fatalities. certainly a sad story last week. this week, a lot of people will be thankful. the the next couple days, a big threat for tornadoes in areas

of arkansas, southern missouri once again, and the flooding we're going to see this week outs of these areas is going to be extreme. >> all right. rick, live in st. louis for us this morning. we appreciate it. thank you. a federal mediator is now stepping into a land dispute between native americans and the city of alejo. native americans have been protesting construction on the 15-acre glen cove site. the city plans to add a parking lot and outside bathrooms and benches. activists say the ground is a sacred burial ground. a federal mediator will try to reach a compromise. activists say they hope talks between both sides will continue next week. >> we'll be meeting with the department of justice on monday. we're hoping to know by monday night or tuesday morning whether or not they're willing

to sit down and talk. >> the native americans say construction on the land will disturb the human remains buried there. they add that there are enough toilets and benches nearby and the proposed work is unnecessary. a search will resume this morning for an 11-year-old boy missing in the kings canyon national park. the new jersey boy disappeared on friday after hiking with his family. yesterday search teams spent part of the day along a creek in it the park. crews believe the 11-year-old fell into that water. investigators say they've already recovered some of the boy's clothing. >> it's very traumatizing, very tragic for them. still treating it as a search and rescue. given the circumstance, we can't overlook anything. >> if the child did fall into the water, his chances of survival are said to be extremely slim. that's because of the high, fast, and cold water. search crews say it took them a month to find the last person who fell into that water. racial slurs have been

painted on the walls in a school in los angeles county. several ethnic slurs were found on doors, walls, and a stop sign. swastika and a picture of hitler were also located. >> i was walking through campus. every time i think i'm at end of it, it's another atrocity. >> the names of two teachers were also found spray painted on walls. no one witnessed the actual incident, but police say they discovered clues that may lead them to those responsible. the school has offered up a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. firefighters in stockton say arson could be to blame for a strip mall fire. the fire broke out yesterday at the mall on perishing avenue. they believe the fire started at a real estate office then moved to a mosque next store. >> we're going to take it very seriously. we're very concerned about the fact of the possibilities that

exist when off fire involving some type of religious facility. >> the investigation was put on hold for a while when the roof began caving in. some residents nearby say the heat shattered a lot of windows and melted blinds off their windows. no one was injured in the fire. police in elk grove say they need help to solve the double homicide of two elderly sikh men. a funeral was held yesterday for one of the men who died nine days after his injuries from the gunshot wounds. the two friends were shot last month as they walked down the street in elk grove. the other man died soon after being shot. police are looking into whether the attack was a hate crime. they say the two men seemed to have no enemies but may have been targeted because they were wearing traditional turbans. >> there's very little information to go on. so we really do need every little scrap or tip or witness information or just, you know,

people in parts of indiana are dealing with major flooding this morning. days of heavy rain have filled up creeks and left some roads looking more like rivers. some people have been putting up barriers to keep the water out of their homes. one man who's lived in the area for over 50 years says he has never seen flooding like this. >> we moved all the furniture

to the second floor. we never know when it's going to get up here. it's a rough way to live. >> the red cross has opened shelters for people displaced by flooding. fema inspected flooded neighborhoods across five new jersey counties and decided that damage was not severe enough for a disaster declaration. the declaration would have allowed the state to use federal money with cleanup efforts. big brothers and big sisters of america needs help, so now the organization is doing something it has never done before. for the first time in its 100- year existence, they're rolling out ad campaigns to ask for volunteers and financial help. the organization has more than 38,000 children who need mentors. people who work for big brothers big sisters say the recession has hit the organization hard. >> our donations have gone down nationally. our need has gone up. >> big brother big sister says

its final needs have gone up by about 35%. it costs on average about $1,000 a year to pair one child with one adult. time now is 7:24. rosemary warned us the rain was coming, but i wish that sun would hurry up and get here. >> reporter: i hear you. i think most people would prefer the sunny, 73 on easter sunday. we're not going to get it. we're dealing with light rain and drizzle this morning. we're attempting to give you a view of the bay area and the bridge. as we move through our morning areas, it's going to remain a little soggy. we continue just to see a little bit of light drizzle. our winds generally light coming in from the west and southwest. a few light sprinkles around san francisco. you saw it on our lens just a moment ago. we'll continue with this at least through the morning hours. into the afternoon, we're still looking at the possibility of partly cloudy skies. so for your morning, expect the fog, expect the drizzle, expect the mostly cloudy skies. by noontime, mostly cloudy.

underway. >> reporter: hi, mike. you can see behind me the line stretches all the way down the block on this end of the street. if we turn the camera around to the other side of the street, and it's hard to see because it's crowded, but the line goes all the way to the end of the block on the other side of the stride. all these people are in line waiting for a warm easter brunch at glide memorial church. glide provides meals and social services to people in need all year round, but easter is one of their big three holiday celebrations. easter services start in about a half hour. this is what it was like inside. the reverend says this year they're doing something a little different. they're having people from san francisco's homeless community come up, stand before the congregation, and tell them their personal stories. >> because this is a joyous occasion. it is a new occasion. it is people coming together and really saying i am

somebody. i'm so glad to be a part of the world and of the community. >> reporter: now, before the service started early this morning, we caught up with workers and volunteers who were helping prepare that easter brunch. they're having chicken fried steak. they're serving that between 11:30 and 1:30. anyone who needs a meal is welcome to come. they're preparing a meal for about 2,000 people today. we now have video from a witness of that tornado that swept through the st. louis airport. i want to show you this new video. it shows the passengers at lambert field watching the tornado approach from inside the terminal. officials then start yelling at people to take shelter. you can hear that in the background. they want them to get away from the windows. then you see the people running as that storm suddenly gets stronger. that tornado ripped the roof off one of the terminals.

here's another look at the tornado captured on the airport's tornadoes. this is surveillance video that has been sped up. the picture turned dark once the tornado knocks out power. flights at the airport resumed last night. officials expect business to be about 70% of normal today. new security cameras are up and running today in oakland's chinatown after the community raised the money to buy them. hundreds of people gathered yesterday to celebrate the project. an oakland police officer says because of robberies, fights, and other crime in the area, he decided to lead the effort to raise $17,000 to buy those cameras. >> they use it for elementary schools, seniors who come here. they wanted extra security measures. >> there are now 14 security cameras there. for the first time, we are hearing from a woman who helped interrupt president obama's san

francisco fundraiser earlier this week. this is cell phone video from thursday. it shows a group of anti-war activists breaking out into song during the event. a woman who was in that group tells the chronicle she supports the president. she also says she intends to pay the $76,000 it costs to attend that event. governor jerry brown's call for a statewide vote on taxes appearing to gaining popularity. a new poll from the los angeles times and usc shows 60% of those surveyed want california voters to decide on whether to extend temporary taxes set to expire. 35% said they are against the special election. a majority of those polled also said they favor a combination of cuts and tax increases to help close california's deficit. the majority of san francisco police officers and firefighters do not live in the city. that's according to statistics from the city's department of

human resources. they say only 25% of police officers and 1/3 of the firefighters actually live in san francisco. those who do not live there say it costs too much to live in the city. the report comes as police and firefighters negotiate their pension contribution rates. people in san mateo county will be able to take part in the first redistricting effort in nearly a decade. officials are working to schedule community forums in may and june. that's when residents will be able to weigh in on the configuration of five districts. police and investigators are looking for a killer. a person responsible for the city's first homicide in more than a year. police say the body of 25-year- old kevin craft was found friday morning in a parking lot behind the best western inn on redwood drive. police say it appears he died from a single gunshot wound to

the chest. anyone with information on this case is asked to call the police department. ac transit is considering a price increase. they want to increase the price from $15 to $20 per month starting in august. the district is recommending four increases over eight years that will ultimately make youth passes $45 a month. ac transit administrators say the low price is part of the district's financial troubles. the public will have a chance to weigh in on this proposal wednesday. a public hearing will be held at ac transit's district headquarters at 1600 franklin street. there's a warning in san mateo county this morning after two mountain lions were spotted within a 12-hour period. the latest sighting was yesterday morning near woodside on cedar lane and mountain home road. there was also a sighting friday night on skyline drive. sheriff deputies responded to one of the sightings, but the mountain lion was gone by the time they arrived.

and out of rainfall. we've got showers surrounding you. main energy to the north of us. the southern branch hitting the coastline, forming those clouds. with all this moist air in place, it doesn't take much lift for it to come back down. so this is what we're seeing this morning. you can see most of that energy again to the north of us. once we get from underneath these low clouds, we should be partly cloudy for the afternoon. the second half of the afternoon looks to be the best time to be outdoors, keeping in mind the grass will remain wet for the easter egg hunts. the forecast, notice you can't really pick up a lot of moisture here. the model is having a hard time with these weak impulses. 4:00 in the afternoon, and we are at least giving way to some of those clouds. so again, getting away from those low cloud, we'll see partly dowdy skies for the afternoon. the rain isn't gone. it's coming back in time for your morning drive tomorrow.

a divided congress, the nation's attitude is at a two- year low. 75% of people are unhappy with the job congress is doing. 57% say they are unhappy with the way the president is handling the economy. 70% say the country is heading in the wrong direction. most responders say they believe neither the president nor the congress has their best interest in mind. gas prices in california are reaching record-high levels. the average price statewide is $4.21 a gallon. san francisco is a bit higher at $4.27 a gallon. some drivers in tennessee are getting a bit of relief at pump thanks to a church. that church gave away $10,000 worth of gas yesterday for easter. drivers began lining up outside around 6:30 in the morning to fill up. >> we believe, as a church

francisco sitting at 54 degrees. well, they are cute and cudly and every year it happens. real bunnies end up in easter baskets. but experts say after easter, they often end up homeless. >> reporter: every year, people find it hard to resist putting one of these real bunnies in their children's easter basket. but when the candy is gone, the rabbit is still there. >> a lot of times we find that after easter, rabbits are abandoned at the local shelters. a lot of them don't make it because we get so many in that we just can't find homes for all of them. >> reporter: at any given time, there are about 30 or so rabbits here at house of rabbits society in richmond all looking for homes. the shelter manager says most rabbits purchased at easter won't live to see their first birthday, so the group bans adoptions from april 1 through may 1. still, purchases at pet

stores continue. if you're determined to buy, remember this. a rabbit is like a dog or cat. it needs a long-term commitment. they often live for more than ten years. they also come with the same kind of vet bills. if you were hoping a rabbit could be a friend for your little one, make sure your little one is not too little. >> the fun wears off. rabbits aren't the best pet for little children because kids tend to be kind of high energy, high noise, and rabbits are bothered by a lot of noise and busyness going on. >> now, experts say rabbits can be great pets, just in the right situation. just make sure they're not an impulse buy. best advice, go with chocolate rabbits today. st. louis is not the only airport hit by a twister. part of an illinois airport is gone after a tornado blew through the area. yesterday's strong winds destroyed a hangar at a

regional airport in cairo, located in the southern part of that state. officials say they knew a storm was coming but had little time to prepare. >> this one come out of nowhere. we were out, getting ready to watch for the storms. within minutes, we heard a call on the radio saying they thought they had a direction and it was here. >> no injuries have been reported from that tornado. emergency officials say the community of cairo still has power. united continental fliers will no longer get a discount for paying online. the carrier dropped the discount. now it's going to cost you $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second no matter how or when you pay. delta airlines says passengers will soon be able to check the status of their checked bags. the move comes as the

government will require airlines to issue refunds for checked bags that are lost. delta is the first major carrier to offer this service. microsoft corporation says it is changing the way it's going to pay its employees. the ceo of the software giant says starting in september, there will be more cash and less stock for workers, although executive pay will still be tied heavily to stock. analysts say the move may be a reaction to microsoft's mediocre stock performance. microsoft also said it is changing the performance of its employees, the way they are evaluated. wal-mart is testing out a new grocery delivery service. they've created a website where customers with order everything from groceries to batteries for delivery right to their doorstep. the service is only available in san jose. industry analysts say wal-mart is trying to compete with amazon.com. time now is 7:46.

guests at the royal wedding will be short one option at the bar. according to a british magazine, prince william and kate middleton have banned their guests from drinking beer. instead, the 650 guests will be treated to champagne and wine. preparations for the big day are well underway at buckingham palace. 21 chefs very busy preparing food for the guests. they say tensions are starting to rise as the day gets closer, but despite all that work, the royal chef says being involved in a royal wedding is the chance of a lifetime. >> we do a lot of big events. for us to be involved in any of the large events is just, you know, great. it's a huge opportunity for us to say yeah, we were part of that. so whether it's for the visit

10-mile-an-hour speed limit for cyclists. cyclists think the idea is ridiculous. apple is facing new privacy pressure this morning after the revelation its iphones and ipads are possibly tracking users. the german government is now demanding more information on the company's privacy practices. germany says apple has until may 10 to respond. the european country has some of the world's toughest privacy laws. in the past, germany has faced off with google, facebook, and other technology companies. apple has not responded to these new developments. facebook posts led to the arrest of four suspects accused of robbing a bank in texas. the fbi got a tip that led them to the facebook page of one of the bank's tellers. two days before the robbery, she left a facebook post that said "get money." the day after the robbery, the

ally joins us live from san francisco where an easter breakfast is taking place. >> reporter: well, people have been living up all morning long for a hot breakfast. a little later on, they're going to start serving easter brunch. they're expecting to serve about 2,000 people today, so they're letting all those people in in shifts. right now, there's a line of a few hundred people outside. if we pan off, you can see the line going all the way back to the end of the block. there are already hundreds of people enjoying a meal inside. it takes dozens of volunteers and full-time workers to coordinate this holiday meal. they serve breakfast every day here at glide, but glide plans for a larger crowd on holidays like this. while this feast was going on, easter sunday service was happening at glide memorial church upstairs. easter sunrise service kicked off about an hour ago.

from an altar on the stairs of st. peter basilica. this year, he stressed peace. st. louis' international airport is returning to normal after a tornado struck yesterday. the airport reopened last night for a handful of flights. officials expect around 70% of flights to go on as planned today. the st. louis mayor says friday night's tornado was the worst to hit the city since 1967. >> it is certainly devastating. it is really heart wrenching to see the amount of homes that have been destroyed, flattened. the number of businesses that have sustained significant damages. >> yesterday, the mayor flew over the damaged area with missouri governor jay nixon. the governor says he talked to president obama yesterday and federal aid has been promised.

no one was seriously injured in the tornado. cleanup efforts are also underway in a nearby neighborhood. the governor says about 750 homes in the area were impacted. of that number, about 100 are not safe enough for people to live in. now homeowners are sorting through the rubble. crews are also working to restore power to more than 30,000 customers. new this morning, wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords is making progress in her recovery. doctors tell ans newspaper today that she can now stand on her own and even walk a little president giffords still has limited use of her right arm and leg, but doctors say that's expected but the bullet entered the left side of her brain. giffords was injured in the mass shooting in tucson in january. two parents in sacramento have been arrested on charges of child pornography. on friday, police arrested the mother and father after

disturbing pictures were found in the home. police say they showed the father engaged in sexual activity with one of his kids while the other watched. police say both children were under the age of three. neighbors were shocked by the news. >> oh, my god. yeah, that's definitely not good. >> just disappointed. very -- i had had no clue. >> the father is an unregistered sex offender. police say the pictures were being sent to a relative currently being held at a prison. those photos were intercepted by prison officials. a search will resume this morning for an 11-year-old boy missing in the kings canyon national park. the new jersey boy disappeared friday after hiking with his family. yesterday, search teams spent part of the day along a creek in the park. crews believe the 11-year-old fell into that body of water. investigators say they have already recovered some of his clothing and know how difficult this is for the boy's family. >> it's very traumatizing, very tragic for them. they're having a very difficult

time. still treating it as a search and rescue. given the circumstances, we can't overlook anything. >> if the child did fall into the water, officials say his chances of survival are said to be extremely small. that's because of the high, fast, and cold water. search crews say it took them a month to find the last person who fell into that body of water. racial slurs have been found painted around a high school in los angeles county. officials at calabasas high say several ethnic slurs were found around the school. swastikas, a picture of hitler, and the words "whites only" were found. >> we just spent the last week at this school, a whole week, looking at tolerance and all the genocides that have happened from culture to culture to culture. then to see these kinds of things turned upside down is just appalling. >> the names of two teachers were also found spray painted on walls.

that swept through a st. louis airport. as you can see, it shows passengers at lambert airport watching the tornado approach from inside the terminal. officials then start yelling at the people to take shelter and get away from the windows. finally, you can see people running as the storm suddenly starting to get stronger. the tornado eventually ripped the roof off one of the airport's terminals and shattered most of the windows. st. louis, this morning, is now trying to pick up the pieces after that devastating storm. >> let's go live to rick who is live in st. louis with more on the cleanup effort now underway. you showed us some of the damage earlier. pretty amazing they're going to get things back to 70% today. >> reporter: yeah, here at the airport, they're getting things back to normal, but some of the cleanup is a little slower. the top of the parking garage

has not been touched much at all. a lot of these people obviously took flights out of st. louis, and they're going to see their cars completely destroyed. here on the parking garage, take a look at this. this sign right here, to west 70. this sign split in half and ended up somehow on top of this roof here. no idea how that happened or where it came from. you can get an idea of the damage. windows blown out here, but they are starting to do a little bit of cleanup. in the last half hour, you can see people that are starting to sweep up the glass. there's a lot of glass and a lot of debris up here, as you can imagine. the terminal is the big story. you see all the plywood there across the windows. a lot of the windows are still blown out. they have a lot of work ahead of them, but people are in, and some flights are beginning to take off. good news, at least some people are getting out of here. >> rick, can you talk a little bit about how wide of a path it appears, at least from where you're standing, that this

tornado was. >> reporter: yeah, they're saying now it was probably about a 30-mile long path for this tornado. very long. at its peak, where it went over the neighborhoods, it was an ef4 tornado. that's the strongest tornado so far this year anywhere in the u.s. last year, none of them were as strong as this one. >> rick, what are they expecting weather-wise as they try to get things off the tarmac and get cleaned up? do they have a time crunch here before something else comes in? >> reporter: they do. great question. today things are a little calmer. we're going to see a little bit of rain here today. not that bad. tomorrow, heavier rain. tomorrow a threat for more severe weather, including tornadoes. that threat is with them again on tuesday. some areas in this broader region are going to be hit by very strong tornadoes again tomorrow and very significant flooding.

so far, no arrests have been made. also, oakland police are searching for a hit-and-run driver that injured a bicyclist. it happened just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the cyclist was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition. the husband of a german tourist killed while visiting san francisco will return to the city this week. the man's wife was shot while walking down mason street last summer. the gunfire came from a shootout between teenagers at a party. this week, the woman's husband is expected to visit the area with the couple's two sons. a hotel chain and restaurants are offering the family free rooms and meals during their stay. so far, there have been no arrests in her killing. governor jerry brown is calling for a statewide vote on taxes, and it appears to be gaining popularity. a new poll shows 60% of those surveyed want the public to

decide in a special election. that's compared to 35% who favor the g.o.p.'s plan to have no vote. a major toughty of those polled also said they favor a combination of cuts and tax increases. ac transit is considering a price increase for youth passes. they want to increase the price from $15 to $20 per month starting in august. the district is recommending four increases over eight years that will ultimately make youth passes $45 a month. ac transit administrators say the low price of youth passes is a part of the district's financial troubles. the public will have a chance to weigh in on the proposal. this coming wednesday, a public hearing will be held at ac transit's district headquarters on franklin street in oakland. big brothers and big sisters of america needs help, so now the organization is doing something it has never done before.

between a group of native americans and the city of vallejo. the city has a proposed project on the glen cove site. they plan to build a parking lot and benches and restrooms. activists say the land is a sacred burial ground. the group will hold off construction so a federal mediator can try to reach a compromise. activists say they hope talks between both sides will continue. >> they'll be meeting with the department of justice monday. we're hoping to know by monday night or tuesday morning whether or not they're willing to sit down and talk. >> the native american group says any construction on the land will disturb the human remains buried there. so far this year, crime is down in central oakland. police say in the area between east and west oakland, they have received fewers reports of

violent crimes. that includes assaults, shooting, sexual assaults, and rapes. overall, there were 144 fewer violent crimes. police say the numbers are encouraging but also say there's still too much crime in oakland. new security cameras are up and running in oakland's chinatown this morning after the community raised the money to buy them. hundreds of people came to lincoln square yesterday to celebrate the security camera project. an oakland police officer led the effort to raise $17,000 to buy the cameras because of robberies, fights, and other crimes. >> the elementary school uses it for the playground. seniors who come here to play ping-pong. they wanted the extra security here. >> there are now 14 cameras in that area. the oakland mayor says she plans to enlist the help of communities throughout oakland to make sure all neighborhoods are safe. police investigators are looking for a killer, a personal responsible for the city's first homicide in more than a year.

police say the body of 20-year- old kevin craft of runner park was found in a parking lot behind the best western. anyone with information on this case is asked to call the police department. arson could be to became for a strip mall fire in stockton. firefighters believe the fire started at a real estate office but then moved to the mosque next door and then on to a christian center. firefighters say suspicions grow any time religious buildings are involved. >> we're going to take it very seriously. we're very concerned. >> the initial investigation was put on hold when part of the mall's roof began to cave in. some residents that live in a nearby apartment building had to be evacuated because of the fire. they say the heat shattered a lot of windows and melted blinds off the windows. fortunately, no one was injured. police in elk grove say they need your help to solve a

double homicide of two elderly sikh men. a funeral was held yesterday for one of the men who died nine days ago from his injuries. the two friends were shot last month as they walked down the street in elk grove. the other man died soon after being shot. police are looking into whether the attack was a hate crime. they say the the two men seem to have no enemies but may have been targeted because they were wearing traditional turbans. >> it's just a really hard case. there's very little information to go on, and so we really do need every little scrap, tip, or witness information or just, you know, anything that anybody knows. >> a $# 2,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible for killing the two friends. a tornado has also damaged a regional airport in illinois. yesterday's strong winds destroyed a hangar at a regional airport in cairo. that's located in the southern part of the state. a nearby office and a small plane were also damaged. you can seep the plane there.

paying its employees. the ceo says starting in september, there will be more cash and less stock for workers, although executive pay will still be tied heavily to stock. analysts say the move may be a reaction to microsoft's mediocre stock performance. microsoft is also changing the way it's evaluating the performance of its employees. wal-mart is testing out a new grocery delivery service in san jose. the big box retailer has created a website where customers with order everything from groceries to batteries all for delivery right to their doorstep. the service, though, is only available in san jose. industry analysts say wal-mart is trying to compete with amazon.com, which expanded into the grocery delivery business in 2007. the rising price of gold has made headlines this past week, but it's silver that has bay area dealers seeing a flood of buyers and sellers. silver prices are at a 30-year high with more concerns about inflation here in the united

we just can't find homes for all of them. >> reporter: at any given time, there are about 30 or so rabbits here at the house of rabbit society in richmond all looking for homes. the shelter manager says most rabbit purchased at easter won't live to see their first birthday. still, purchases at pet stores continue. experts say if you're determined to buy, remember this. a rabbit is like a dog or a cat. it needs a long-term commitment. they often live for more than 10 years. they also come with the same kind of vet bills. they need to be spayed and neutered and will need regular trips to the vet. if you were hoping a rabbit could be a friend for your little one, make sure your little one isn't too little. >> the fun wears off. rabbits aren't the best fun for little churn because kids tend to be kind of high energy, high noise, and rabbits are bothered by a lot of noise and busyness going on. >> experts say rabbits can be great pets, they just need the

right situation. make sure they are not an impulse buy. best advice, go with chocolate rabbits today and give these sweet little guys a little more thought before taking one home. there's a warning in san mateo county this morning after two mountain lions were spotted within a 12-hour period. the latest sighting was yesterday morning on cedar lane and mountain home road. there was also a sighting friday on skyline drive. deputies responded to one of the sightings, but the mountain lion was gone by the time they arrive. the rules for using rat poison are about to change because rats aren't the only ones dies. starting in june, the federal government is banning the most toxic poisons from hardware stores and other consumer outlets. farmers will still have access to those stronger doses. united continental fliers will no longer get a discount for paying online to check their bags.

the carrier has dropped the 2 to $3 disdown to the used to offer for checking luggage online. it will cost you $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second no matter how or when you pay. the changes take place march 9. delta airlines passengers will soon be able to check the status of their checked bags. the move comes as the government requires airlines to provide refunds for lost luggage. travelers will be able to follow their checked bag step by step. gas prices in california are reaching record high levels. the average statewide price is $4.21 a gallon. the record high was $4.61. that was set back in june of 2008. right now, oakland and san jose have averages of $4.22 and

nfl players remain locked out this morning, and the only certainty in the league these days is that the college draft is still scheduled for this week. the raiders have seven picks, but none in the first round. the 49ers enter the draft with a league high 12 picks. the niners new head coach jim harbaugh recently looked at several bay area prospects. many nfl organizations say because of the lockout, there might be more twists and turns in the nfl draft. the san jose sharks look to send the l.a. kings packing for the season. the puck dropped for game live last night. the l.a. kings came out hot. mid-way through the 1st, a wrister goes up. kings go up 3. the sharks would switch out goalies and go on the attack.
