good afternoon. we begin with new details from a witness of a shooting in oakland that left two dead and four wounded. we have continuing coverage on the story. the shooting happened outside the sweet jimmy nightclub. are police still looking for the gunman? >> that is one of the new details police are still looking for the gunman in this case. let's show you the scene here. we can show you where the shooting happened. the investigation has wrapped up here at sweet jimmies. if you take a look on the ground there is still evidence markers. an hour ago i tracked down witnesses that told me it's what happened after the shooting that is what stuns her. witnesses tell investigators the suspect got out of a car and tried to get into the club. for whatever reason he was turned away. that's when witnesses say he pulled a gun and started

firing. jessica mitchell works at the elleington across the street and heard the shots she said what happened next is a surprise. >> i heard a few gunshots and i saw people coming from this way running toward sweet jimmy's and later on i heard the shooting came from right there. >> reporter: investigators say when the smoke cleared two men were dead. two other men were taken to the hospital and two women were shot and expected to recover. >> it's really quiet over here. this used to happen awhile back but i guess it's coming back again. >> reporter: now we have new information just in to our newsroom that oakland police will be releasing a vehicle description a little bit later on this morning. my colleague will be working on this story. he will bring you the latest details on that vehicle. you can also check out a vehicle description on ktvu.com. more details coming up live at 5:00 and 6:00.

for now we are live in oakland. >> thank you christian. around the same time the shooting at sweet jim maine's happened oakland police responded to another call about shots fired. kimables. the man was transported to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. they have no information leading them to believe that shooting and the one at sweet jimmy's were the one that was related. there was another shooting at the nightclubs at jack london square. a man was wounded across town shortly after 11:00 p.m.. police say this was not connected to the nightclub shootings. the overnight incidents topped off a violent week land in oakland in-- weekend in oakland including 14 armed robberies and two home invasion

robberies. police suffered radio problems on saturday during a man hunt for a suspected car thief who crashed the stolen vehicle and then disappear the on foot. rain returned to the bay area this morning. it wasn't enough but it was enough to make the umbrellas blossom. ktvu meteorologist rosemary will be around to give us a peak at a promising outlook. we have new information on a san francisco apartment fire. it started around 12:30 this morning on powell street. between vallejo and green street in the north beach neighborhood. late this morning investigators told ktvu they are certain the fire started by accident inside the building. it did not give anymore details. there were several injuries. three people were treated for smoke inhalation. one of them cut his foot on glass and a woman is being

called a hero after she carried an elderly man down the stairs to face him. >> then i carry him because he was in the top floor and the door cannot open. no lie. i saw the smoke and the fire. >> at least six residents will not be allowed back into their homes for some time. the bay area may soon have one less fire department. a vote on restructuring tonight could desolve the belmont fire department and then outsource it to someone else. ktvu tara moriarty joins us live to explain what is at stake here. tara. >> reporter: we just received a letter a copy of a letter from the international association of fire chief's president. it's addressed to the president of wacen hut services. that's the contractor that wants to tackifier services. it blasts the proposal calling

some of the statements regarding its awards down right false and misleading. they are fire back. we caught up with rick just moments ago minutes after its plane landed in san francisco. he works for the private florida based company. he will appear at tonight's city council meeting to defend his competency. >> the federal government is entrusted him to protect some of the most critical assets in the united states. whether they be the kennedy space center or department of energy facilities. and so we think that gives us a very confident pass performance to do it. >> reporter: it would employ some of its current city firefighters and are able to offer cheaper services because of the way it figures shifts. they only had one contract with the city for fire services and it ended badly. >> they were there all seven

months. they had quite a few problems. they ended up resulting in a firefighter being on a grass fire because they were not properly trained and equipped. now ty says a firefighter in question died from a heart attack. this weekend more than 100 firefighters from all over the bay area went door to door handing out fliers urging to come to the city council meeting and support them. they are for lack of a better term divorcing belmont in the fall. the three options under consideration. it could become a stand alone department, it could merge with redwood city, or contract out with this private security company. san carlos' mayor says the city has a $3.5 million budget deficit. tonight's city council meeting starts at 7:00 and promises to be packed. we are live i'm tara moriarty. we are now learning that last weeks warehouse fire at the martinelli's apple plant

took a deadly toll on local wildlife. hundreds of fish in the nearby slew were killed. debris and soot from the burning warehouse crept into the water opinion the phone used by firefighters may have killed some of the fish. the fire started on wednesday and took firefighters two days to put it out. a handful of protestors staged a brief demonstration outside of berkeley high school on behalf of a teacher they claim is in danger of being fired because of her race. >> discrimination we say no. >> the attorney for valerie says she was given a less than proficient evaluation two years ago because she spoke out against discrimination. she is now in an evaluation period that could end with her firing at the end of the term. he is african american. a district spokesman says he has no comment on personnel

matters. stanford research has hope for kids with severe allergies. eight foods are responsible for 9:%. they are milk eggs, peanuts, fish, shellfish, wheat and tree nuts. ten kids were extremely sensitive to milk. researchers desensitized them by giving them a drug that suppresses the allergy and builds up an immunity. all of them can eat dairy products without the drug. they hope to expand the test to include other food. four days to go. we'll show you what is going on in london today ahead of the royal wedding. a sad reminder the problems in japan are not over. what kind of things are going on today. there are still scattered showers as we look outside. rosemary will be up soon to tell you if the afternoon commute will be a wet one. also. they are nasty. they are dirty. >> they are very important to

today the city of oakland begins its annual battle against potholes. this is a video ktvu camera took there showing potholes are

a big problem. oakland started this program five years ago. it usually starts when the rainy season is almost over. congresswoman gabrielle giffords is making plans to travel from her texas hospital bad to her husband's -- hospital bed to her husband's shuttle launch. she responded with a word awesome. doctors say she has made remarkable progress in a recovery from a gunshot wound to the head. but she must return to the hospital immediately after the launch. her husband will be the commander of the final flight. new video out of japan today shows a massive search under way. japanese troops are looking for the bodies of the 12,000 people still missing following last months earthquake and tsunami. 25,000 are slogging through

marsh ground and poking with poles in search of victims. in the meantime navy boats and divers are searching the water up to 12 miles off the coast. a nato air strike in libya targeted the compound in tripoli. supporters of the libyan leaders gathered at the site of the bombing. the attack destroyed a library building and office and badly damaged a reception hall. last month a nato cruise miscan targeted an administration building in the compound. gas prescribes may have peaked for the year. lower demand and slower growth may keep gasoline prices from hitting a record high. gas prices are up almost 12 cents in the last two weeks. one survey says the price increases are slowing down.

the national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.88. as usual it's much higher here in the bay area. the average for san francisco is $4.28. and it's a nickel less in the east and south bay. if you ever wanted to offer your opinion of bart seats now is the time to do so. the tran sit agency will be buying new seats for trains and the public is being invited to participate in a seat lab to help determine how the seats should be designed. this morning many people talked about seat fabric and cleanliness. that is one area that bart is researching. >> we have four different aspects we are looking at

these are pictures of the clark campus this morning. police say they have identified a suspect in one or both incidents on monday. the two victims say a man was spikey black hair was peering over the shower stall wall. people are cleaning up today from a powerful tornado that hit the st. louis area on friday. the twisterrer to off roofs and uprooted trees in the town of bridgeton. operations are back to normal. closed when the tornado hit. the national weather service says it was an f-4 with winds above 200 miles an hour. only an f-5 would be more powerful. there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries. and farther south? butler county heavy rains have lead to the evacuations of hundreds of people along missouri borders. authorities say they are afraid of what they call a catastrophic failure of levies along the black river.

some areas have already had as much as 15 inches of rain and more is in there forecast. a cold cloudy soggy start to the day giving you a look at san francisco here where we got the city and bridge in sight. and it has big puffy clouds to show you and signs of improving conditions. the north bay dealing with partly sunny skies. take a look at the satellite view. you can see areas along the north bay reporting partly sunny skies. we have a northerly breeze in santa rosa. that is an indication we are just about finished with this rain. where it comes to rain, well you've got all the clouds hanging over the south bay. that is where we are looking at light rain and drizzle. perhaps san jose, fremont seeing light rain, mountain view to east bay valley locations dealing with gusty conditions. hayward reporting winds 20 miles an hour.
