condition and he has been transered to uc davis where they have a special burn unit. the explosion happened about 10:30 this morning. they had to enter the building to rescue the injured employee who could not get outside. a team worked with agilent staff to check employees for contamination. two workers were cleaning equipment inside the lab where agilent manufacturers integrated circuits. there were about eight chemicals involved and workers tell us they could hear and feel that blast. >> it was like a big explosion. like a boom, like that. >> what we need to do first is understand what happened, why it happened and certainly we'll be putting in place steps to prevent this from happening either here or if we have other facilities like this any where else within the company. >> fire officials say there are about eight chemicals in that

cleaning process including red phosphorous, yellow phosphorous that may have contributed to that explosion. and more employees are at the hospital simply for examination. all of the chemicals were contained here but no word on when it will reopen. we're going to stay here tonight and see if we can -- we can get more information. for now reporting live jana katsuyama. a gas leak at an elementary school forced students to be evacuated this morning. a strong smell of gas came from a leak in the boiler from the school's heating system. pg & e fixed the problem and students returned to class about 45 minutes later. a large number of san jose city workers got pink slips today with more lay off notices coming in the next two weeks.

san jose is trying to trim a deficit of more than $400 million. just how many people are going to be losing their jobs? robert handa has the story. >> reporter: hundreds of workers are getting these pink slips which is really a memo on white paper but it's delivering the same message. in july, you're scheduled to be laid off. tran was born and raised in san jose, bilingual where a bachelor's degree. this morning trong got this pink slip. >> it's actually more like a shock. i would have never imagined three years ago or even last year that they would lay off. >> reporter: truong is 100 officers getting lay off slips. 230 workers will be demoted or

bump other people out of jobs due to seniority. many employees say it's devastating for moral. >> i've never seen it so so bad. i just, i can't believe it. >> reporter: city officials say this is just the first round or first tier cuts. if working groups will agree to take a voluntary 10% pay cut, some jobs could be saved. >> if we can get that then we can work with -- other wise we're going to seat more severe cuts coming down to road if we don't get that. >> reporter: truong says that doesn't give him or his family any hope. >> no matter what, they're going to lay me off. i'm disappointed, sad, i don't know how i'm going to tell my family or how i'm going to explain to them after july, how am i going to pay my mortgage? you know. how are we going to have food on the table? >> reporter: again the lay offs begin july 1st. there are still negotiations going on with various workers groups including police and firefighters. live in san jose, robert handa,

ktvu channel 2 news. very clear surveillance video may help police solve a murder in roner park. they believe these two people on screen may have connections to the killing of kevin craft. the 20-year-old was killed last friday. investigators have identified the woman as kimberly monet christian. they don't know who the man to the left of her on the screen is just yet. craft was killed in the parking lot of a best western hotel in rone -- ronel park. the city has already -- the city rather already has one injunction against the north oakland gang and is in court trying to get one against a fruitvale gang. injunctions allow police to order gang members not to hang out with each other. tonight we're learning more

about a man killed in a restaurant shooting. john sasaki tells us what makes his death even sadder is who he has left behind. >> reporter: police are still trying to track down the shooter and two accomplices to the shooting yesterday. the motive was an attempted robbery. two men are dead, including a 22-year-old left behind a devastated school community adam wynns sen john jenkins were shot and killed. one of the victims had resisted a robbers demand before being shot. the other had just come out of the bathroom when he was hit by gunfire. >> it's just a horrible, horrible loss. he has a 4-year-old of his own.

murder trial exchanged testy remarks in court today. the judge snapped back quote, when you go to law school and learn the evidence code get back to me. we now know the name of both the suspect and victim from the homicide in antioch last night. david johnson the second was killed as he defended his roommate. the suspect is kevin gunning. officers say gunning came to the home and threatened his ex- girlfriend with a gun. they say johnson was shot while he was protecting her. this is antioch's second homicide in year. san carlos will not hire a private company to provide fire fighting services after all. after a spirited debate that lasted well into the evening last night. the city council re rejected a bid. the city now plans to pursue a possible merger with redwood

city's fire department. but if those talks fail, the council said it might reconsider the wakenaw proposal. in a couple of hours from now, the san bruno city council will hear the details of a new pg & e report. she told ktvu this afternoon that pg & e has made an initial deposit of $12 million and has agreed to pay up to $70 million. that money will be used for the city's response and recovery costs from the explosion and fire. those costs are separate from losses that homeowners suffered. in a money saving move, governor brown issued an executive order today prohibiting travel unless it is critical or has no cost to the government. all instate travel requires approval from directors. out of state trips must be

approved by the governor's office. the travel ban is part of governor brown's proposal to save $33 million from government operations. the 3.5 quake was reported. no reports of injuries or damage. a horrifying accident in los angeles after a woman was killed after a car plunged off the fourth floor of a parking garage. it happened this morning at a parking garage in west l. a. los angeles fire officials told ktvu a woman in her 70s was driving an suv on the fourth floor of the garage when the suv suddenly crashed through a concrete barrier and fell to the sidewalk below. the woman died, no one on the ground was hurt. police say it was an accident. what's inside this box is prompting a big fight at city hall. the services it's set to

it's a high tech upgrade that will give san franciscans options. but some residents are saying slow down. >> reporter: i just came from a meeting room where right now san francisco officials are making a decision on a new at&t. at&t says it's a fiberoptic network that will give customers a new option. but some neighborhood groups are battling the boxes, arguing they will add on to existing eyesores because the new boxes

must be installed within 300 feet of existing telephone cabinets. >> major eyesore, yeah. because it's in addition to every existing one that we have. >> reporter: gary white says telephone cabinets are already graffiti magnets and say the new boxes will become obsolete soon. >> it's wireless technology improving by the minute. to put these giant boxes on sidewalks, physical boxes doesn't seem to be the most progressive way to approach increasing you know competition. >> reporter: at&t says it will pay crews to clean vandalized boxes and attempt to place them in out of way spots. >> we've offered opportunities to help soften the esthetics of the boxes by doing decorative signage or greenage. >> reporter: 44 boxes are already installed, waiting to be switched on if the project is approved. some residents say they would welcome a new option to getting

on. >> we would like to see a little competition, it's the american way. >> reporter: right now at&t is waiting to get the go ahead. at&t says doing a study will delay the project for years. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. marin county has now joined a growing coalition challenging pg & e's opposition for smart meters. the county is filing a protest that will give customers the option to have their transmeters and smart meters turned off for a fee. pg & e says the fees are needed to cover a variety of costs associated with the plan. santa clara is now part of a growing trend to ban plastic shopping bags hoping to get people to use reusable bags.

the plan requires retailers to sell 100% recyclable bags for a minimum of 15-cents in. the new ordnance applies to 15 business in the county's unincorporated area. sea world in san diego is getting rid of plastic. the theme park will be banning plastic bags in their gift shops. upon getting this news, we called six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo to see if they have a similar plan. the theme park tells us they do not ban plastic bags but offer reusable bags at their gift shops. the price of a cup of coffee could be going up. in the past year the whole sale price has more than doubled to $3. sal castaneda is in oakland tonight and tells us why the prices are so high and how much more we could all be paying. sal. >> reporter: so many people have a routine which includes getting a cup of coffee. they say that routine won't be

the federal aviation administration says the latest termination involved an air traffic controller on boeing field in seattle who fell asleep twice in recent months. the hiring followed several publicized incidents. the ford motor company reported its best fourth quarter earnings in more than a decade. and the best first quarter since 1988. ford says the increase is due if port for sales of their fuel saving vehicles and buyers going for more expension sieve options. and nissan has recalled tundras from the 2011 model year. recall letters will be sent out

starting next month. good day on wall street, the dow was up more than 10e zero points following strong earnings from ford, ups and others. at the closing bell, stocked rebounded from yesterday's losses and hit new highs for the year. the dow finished up 115 points closing at 12,595. the nasdaq closed up 22 points at 2,848. new figures show home prices are nearing record lows in many bay areas. home prices fell for the seventh straight month in february. the index is slightly above the level hit in april 2009 which was the lowest point since the housing bubble burst. the record number of

so called robot price wars are changing the price of some

items skyrocketing on ecommerce sites such as amazon.com. the blogger who works at uc berkeley noted one example of a scientific book about flies hitting a sticker price of $23.7 million. the humane society is banning a new android app that he says glorifies dog fighting. the human society website includes the statements from philadelphia eagles quarterback michael vick who served time for dog fighting called for android to drop the game. the world's biggest social network today launched a test program to tap into a hot ecommerce idea. it works similar to groupon you could get $50 worth of food at

a local restaurant for $25. facebook will try to target members to get the program going. and police are cracking down on distracted driving. belmont police officers were out in force writing tickets to drivers who were on the phone without a hand free device. the minimum fine is $150. a proposed new law would bump that up to more than $300. police say distracted drivers are four times more likely to get into a serious accident so they are taking a zero tolerance stand. >> once she drove by, you could see that she had a phone up to her ear. once i stopped her, she still had a phone up to her ear. >> people come up with, i was not on the phone or i was just on the phone for a few minutes.

>> police have written 25 distracted driving tickets. the crack down continues tomorrow. santa rosa police today also staged a crack down. this enforcement campaign focused on motorcycle safety. california ranks in the top three states in the country with the highest number of motorcycle crashes. today extra santa rosa police officers were on patrol throughout the city. they were looking for bikers who violated traffic laws. they also went after other vehicles that put motorcyclists in danger by making unsafe moves. tinkering while on the job. the employee perk that lets google workers tackle personal business on the job. >> the state law the city of oakland is now using to go after property owners who let forclosed homes turn to blithe. also ahead, a common vegetable you can buy at a grocery store could be the key to fighting skin cancer.

uc santa cruz has a new honor tonight, it's not for academics but for its waves. it has been named to surf magazine's top ten surf colleges list. it recognizes santa cruz as the best place for students who want to surf at least 365 days a year. other california schools include, uc san diego, peperdine and cal poly. a ten by ten foot mosaic appeared this week. no one knows who made it or who installed it but you can see the madonna is surfing awave with the slogan save the ocean. now there's a new mystery. what's going to happen to this
