good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's thursday, april 28th. one man is dead an a veteran officer is recovering from serious injuries after what police call a fight for her life. this happened near dublin boulevard close to the 580/680 interchange. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong was the first reporter on the scene and joins us live with what led up to the violent confrontation. >> reporter: well, kicked, punched and slammed to the ground. that's how officers are describing this. the transient involved in this is dead. the officer is now in the hospital. this all happened in the lot of that dodge chrysler jeep stone ridge auto center right across the way from where we're standing. the officer radioed in after spotting a suspicious person

and then called in to say shots have been fired. at this point, it's still unclear how many. that's what investigators are trying to confirm. but this whole incident took three minutes. while police say they don't know what started it, they say for some reason, this suspect launched a vicious attack on the officer. >> very quickly it got violent. he started to attack her. he started to punch her and basically she -- he -- he tried to stomp my head in the ground, is what she said. >> reporter: the suspect is estimated to be in his 50s. he's a known transient with a criminal record that does include violence. the officer is a veteran sergeant with 20 years on the job. she's gonna be okay but is in the trauma center. this area is gonna be shut down for quite a while. it was shut down after this happen, around 1:0 this morning. crime scene tech nixes are still there and the coroner won't be called in until all this is -- called in until all

this is done. as far as an identity on the transient, they are still looking for next of kin so that could be a while. again, at this point, they are still trying to piece together everything that happened out here at 1:30 this morning. it was just three minutes long but there's still quite a few questions about what triggered it and what started it. all we know, it was very violent and ended with one man dead and this officer still recovering from what they are calling serious injuries. live in dublin, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. an early-morning fire in oakland leaves five people without a home. it happened on 6th avenue east of international boulevard, shortly before 2:30 this morning. firefighters think a wiring problem may be to blame and the fire may have started in the kitchen. it took almost three hours to clear that scene. firefighters tell us what took them so lock -- so long.

>> the homes hold in insulation. they hold in heat. so we pretty much had to remove most of the roof. >> no one was at home when the fire start and no one was hurt. red cross was on the scene to help out. 7:03. at least 200 people now have been killed in a series of storms yesterday that ripped through the southern part of the country. this is video from tuscaloosa, alabama. authorities say this state was the hardest hit with at least 132 people killed. coming up at 7:20, we'll go live to the area to find out why the death toll has been so high. we'll show you where cleanup efforts are underway and president obama has declared a state of emergency. doctors in los angeles are attempting to bring brian stow out of a medically-induced coma. you suffered a skull fracture

they estimate she had been dead about a week. a good samaritan rescued a surfer. police say an unidentified man was found facedown. a good samaritan performed cpr and called 911. the man was taken to the hospital. no word on his condition. all right. cerealmakers are being told to pay attention. the breakfast request coming from the obama administration. no more checks. in a couple of days, the social security recipients won't get paper checks. and why the entire leadership of a small delta town had to show up in court.

indian grounds. jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: good morning. we've been told by the descendant who is handling this case that he doesn't want to go on camera -- on camera while discussing it. he also says even though he knows where the remains are, he would rather not disclose that location. he says he's notified the school district. they've respond and they are working on an agreement which would allow the remains to be murreyed in fremont, at a cemetery there. construction bin fish -- finished a few months ago here and experts say the remains are likely the remains of the tribal village once located in contra costa county. it's estimated the skeletons date back 250 to,000 years ago. district was responsible for

tomorrow, oakland mayor jean quan is expected to unveil her first detailed plan with dealing with the city's $50 million budget. in a preliminary budget plan, she released last month, she called for you a city departments to reduce spending -- for all city departments to re-- to reduce spending by 15%. the city has to come up with a final budget plan by june 30th. darrell steinberg said he's considering a proposal to cut state services to republican districts in came. at an appearance yesterday at the sacramento press club, steinberg said, "if you don't want to pay for government, well, then you will get less of it. steinberg was avenue referring to call from republican lawmakers for a cuts only solution to the state budget deficit. a new poll shows 61% of californians favor governor jerry brown's plan to eliminate

as they have been since very early this morning. police investigators are reconstructing the scene. the description we're getting of this attack is vicious. kicked, punched and stomped to the ground. it all happened in that auto sales lot across from where we're standing after the veteran police sergeant radioed in that she spotted a suspicious person. she radioed in about 1:30 this morning. and moments later called in again to ask for assistance. she called in to ask for a third -- in a third time to say shots were fired. at this point it's still unclear how many shots were fired. we're told she believes she fired one. as oftentimes in these cases, more were fired and the officer doesn't remember because of the distress of the situation. this whole incident took only three minutes. while police don't know what started it, for some reason the suspect launched an attack on

this officer. >> very quickly it got violent. he tarted -- started to attack her. he punched her. basically she said he tried to stomp my head into the ground. >> reporter: the suspect is estimated to be in his 50s. he's a known transient in this area with a criminal record that does include fighting so they say he has been known to turn to violence. the officer is a veteran sergeant with about 20 years on job. she is going to be okay. but she's been in the trauma center today because they describe her injuries to her head as serious and that she was pretty beaten up from this whole confrontation with this transient. this area out here has been shut down since early this morning and it's going to continue to be shut down. you are taking a live look at st. patrick way and amador parkway. in case you don't know this area, this is the 680 southbound onramp and offrap to dublin -- offramp to dublin boulevard. so if you are driving along 6 0

joseph naso wants to be his own lawyer at his murder trial. the 77-year-old photographer from reno said that yesterday. he told the judge he is certain it would be best for everyone to be -- if he acted as his own attorney. the judge is expected to rule on that request next month. naso is accused of killing four northern california women in crimes that date back to the

1970s. a fight outside of a funeral service at 55th and foothill. one woman told us relatives in one car attacked her family 80 shovel and bat. two people were injured and taken to the hospital. >> one was apparently hit by a car. police took several people into custody. there's no word on what is behind this family feud. we are learning that it was an argument over a video game that may have led to a homicide at a san jose care facility. as we told you yesterday morning, police arrested a 28- year-old man in connection with the case. he's accused of strangling a 24- year-old man after an argument. both men lived at the home. the final touches are going on a new multi-million dollar sports complex in east oakland. the sports center will open by the end of june. looks like a beautiful place. inside there, there is a dance studio, a fitness center, three multi-purpose rooms and an indoor pool with a waterslide.
