they believe is a blue hyundai a four door. and the license plate you see it there 5hxf433. again this amber alert was just issued moments ago. if you have any information you are asked to call the oakland police department. or you can call the chp. again the headline here they are looking for a 16-year-old girl named clara thornton who they believe was abducted by a man -- by a 57-year-old man named richard ashley. as we get more information, we will bring it to you. a dramatic turn tonight on a case that began seven years ago on the streets of tahoe. a plea in the nancy and phillip garrido case. mike mibach is in the neighborhood where dugard was held captive. but let's begin with ken

pritchett. >> reporter: today dugard said that she is relieved by the guilty pleas. phillip garrido showed no emotion as she agreed to 240 years to life for the kidnapping of dugard. he pled guilty to all chargeless. phillip garrido fathered dugard's two daughters. >> jaycee's courage and willingness to face her captors led to the guilty plea. >> reporter: her attorney had hoped to work a deal in which nancy would one day walk free. >> i said once i would like to walk on the beach. and i said unfortunately it's going to be a casket. >> reporter: dugard said i'm

relieved that phillip and nancy garrido have finally admitted their guilty and confessed to the crimes against me and my family. nancy garrido's attorney says his client feels genuinely sorry for what she did. >> she obviously committed a serious wrong, but in her view now she's made peace with god. and wants to get on with life what's left of it. >> reporter: plea deals were expected in this case. but that they came today suddenly that was a surprise. sentencing will be the final court date in this matter and that sentencing is scheduled for june 2nd. in placerville, ken pritchett. >> thank you, ken. now from ken pritchett we go to mike mibach who is getting reaction now from the neighborhood, mike. >> reporter: tonight no one really seems shocked. they all seem pretty happy about today's plea. this is the front yard of the

mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. jaycee dugard's case found cracks in the system for tracking sex offenders. parol agents repeatedly missed opportunities to find dugard. for example an agent failed to inspect the backyard where dugard was held for 18 years. the state has since increased its monitoring of sex offenders. our coverage of the dugard case continues on our website. you can watch the interview with nancy garrido's attorney and the dugard's attorney. and stanford made a decision on the rotc program. >> reporter: as expected, the senate just voted 28-9 to end

the ban on rotc after nearly 40 years. students against having rotc come back to campus gathered for a demonstration in the law school courtyard. protesters wanted those on stanford's faculty senate meeting inside to know they are against it. >> what do we want? >> reporter: bennnet who represents the group says he is against rotc returning to stanford despite the military's recent abandonment of don't ask don't tell because of a ban on transgender people. >> i think it's wrong for this university to bring back a organization that is still discriminatory. >> reporter: the campus navy rotc building was burned down in protest. many tell us they don't agree

on discrimination against anyone but say having rotc on stanford will add another voice to the debate. >> i think it's pretty clear that that adds to the diversity in the same way that the transgender folks add to the diversity. i think the military presence also adds to the diversity. after today's vote, the stanford president has made it clear if that vote happened and now it has that he will actually make contact with military organizations and ask them if they want to return to campus. live at stanford, sal castaneda, ktvu challenge two news. governor jerry brown went before parents to discuss his solutions to discuss cuts. specifics about his speech this afternoon have still not leaked out. brown is trying to convince the public that his extension plan is necessary to prevent further budget cuts to services and

education. a new poll shows the majority of californians support the governor's plan to support the governor's state budget. 61% said they approved the proposed combination of spending cuts and taxes. but 62% say they don't want their personal income taxes rayed. while 68% said they are okay with raising the personal income tax on wealthy californians. the university system is setting a record tonight. the eight campus, san jose state university and sf state have received more undergraduate applications than ever before. csu officials said today 621,000 applications have come in. that's up from 617,000 last year. this year only 319,000 will be admitted but that is also up compared to last year. federal investigators say a nummi driver involved in a crash that injured dozens of

passengerred passengers blacked out just before it happened. 46 passengers and the operators of both trains were hurt. the ntsb report shows that the driver blacked out right before the accident. the driver had a heart condition. if you want to read the entire report just go to ktvu.com and look for the right now section. the b.a.r.t. board of directors started discussing an idea to run trains one hour later on friday nights and start running the trains one hour later on saturday mornings. they did not take a vote today. a b.a.r.t. spokesman says the next step is to address schedules and obtain how many drivers will lose service on a one month test. new information coming in on that breaking news.
