back. >> i'm claudine wong, we have another beautiful day in store for us. man, it was warm yesterday. i really liked it, rosemary. >> it was warm, it was breezy, and the winds have relaxed because of that. a lot chillier this morning. for the afternoon, those winds will remain light, our temperatures are going to warm from 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday. we're talking 80s. we'll look at those conditions coming up. oakland fire was working this morning, a fire ignited early this morning. allie rasmus joining us live at this scene. >> reporter: mike, firefighters say this fire was suspicious, because of where it started, and how quickly the flames spread. the fire started in the front entry way stairwell directly behind us in this victorian home. it was just a matter of minutes

before the flames traveled up the stairs, throughout the building, and engulfed the building around 2:30 this morning. no one was hurt. in fact, the building was supposed to be vacant. no one's lived here legally for years. one neighbor who only wanted to be identified by his first name, says the abandoned building was a magnet for squatters. >> at one time, there was maybe 20 people in and out. they actually rewired the house, and all kind of stuff. >> there was obvious people were living up there. sleeping bags and what not. fortunately, everybody got out safetily. >> reporter: the fire investigators don't think that cooking equipment and the squatters belongings are what started the fire. they suspected arson, because of where the fire began. it was fair away from where the squatters were staying. arson investigators were called to inspect what's left of the building, and they will continue their investigation

throughout the weekend. meanwhile, oakland public works inspectors tell me this 100- year-old victorian is a total loss, and will probably have to be demolished. the owners of a santa cruz dispensary are spending part of their weekend cleaning up, after two people firebombed their business, and it's all caught on camera. this is surveillance video. it shows the moment two arsonists through a mol tv kok tile into the building yesterday morning. two other cameras inside, also caught the flames. the owner responded to the scene after getting a phone call from his alarm company. he did manage to stop the flames before they spread into the room where the marijuana is stored. >> we take hits from all angles. it's not just law enforcement, professional government. local ordinances. everybody seems they're coming at us. >> they're hoping the video will help capture the arsonist

responsible. the local group, cannabis healers.org has put up a $5,000 donation leading to arrest. a northern california soldier has been killed in afghanistan. he has been identified as preston dennis from redding. the military says dennis died on thursday, when his unit was hit by an i advised explosive device. dennis who was on his second tour in afghanistan is survived by his wife and parents. still recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his nose. the governor's office says brown had the growth removed from the right side of his nose, during an outpatient procedure in oakland. brown is now recovering at home, and will not make any public appearances until his stitches are removed. the state department convention will wrap up in sacramento today. on today's agenda is san

francisco mayor, ed lee. yesterday, senator diane feinstein gave the keynote address. trying to rally the party saying they need to work for president obama's reelection campaign. >> everybody who is incumbent, they may be running against each other, it is creating a little bit of turmoil up here, as well as angst. >> this weekend's convention comes after democrats swept every statewide office in november's midterm elections. a group of college republicans protested the democratic convention. it happened inside the sacramento hotel hosting that convention. the group denounced governor brown's proposal to extend tax increases. brown has been campaigning for those increase to avoid an all

welcome back. good morning to you, you may have noticed a lot of sail boats out on the bay today. today's kickoff will feature a parade of 120 boats decked out in giants orange and black, which is this year's theme. the parade begins at noon, and goes down to pier 39. as the toll from those deadly tornadoes climbs in alabama, surviving victims are now focusing on finding their loved ones alive. >> joining us once again this morning, live from tuscaloosa, alabama. it is one of the cities hardest hit by these storms. >> reporter: a lot of neighborhoods hit, a lot of communities hit across the entire state. we are hearing reports of

levee since the 1930s. the faa is investigating a helicopter crash near a college campus in pennsylvania. the chopper was believed to be taking part in the taping of a reality show, called campus pd, when it crashed between two apartment buildings. at least one person actually walked away from the helicopter. two others were sent to the hospital. the extent of their injuries has not been released. nasa announced within the last hour, that it will not launch shuttle endeavor tomorrow. gabrielle giffords was p.m. expected to be in florida to watch the launch. nasa this morning did not announce a new launch date. president obama doesn't mind joking about the controversy surrounding his

college. at the community college, palin will inaugurate a new arena. the they paid $115,000 to get the former alaskan governor on campus. last year, an appearance ignited controversy, because the school refused to release the terms of her speaker's fee. prince charles is getting ready to head to the united states. he is going to fly to washington on tuesday. this is video of prince charles's last visit to the u.s. on tuesday, the prince is going to meet with president obama at the white house, and he'll give a speech at georgetown university. president obama is due to make an official state visit to britain at the end of the month. things are getting back to normal in england after all the royal wedding fanfare. crews were busy yesterday, cleaning up the streets surrounding buckingham palace. everything from trash to miniature flags could be found

thousands of firefighters are battling more than 10 forest fires in northern china. officials believe lightning is to blame for most of thorough fires. firefighters may catch a break today, because winds are expected to be calmer. the martinelli company is convinced it can are rebuild after a massive fire. they used the warehouse to

store juices. and $3 million worth of products were destroyed. it expects insurance to cover those losses. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. but arson has been ruled out. venetia is considering a plan to lay off its fire chief. that would save the city more than $284,000. the elimination would be part of a plan to merge the police and fire departments into one public safety department. if benicia doesn't merge them, it could make other cuts. the city council will consider all of this at their meeting on tuesday night. the public portion of that meeting starting at 7:00 at benicia city hall. a bay area boy dedicated to saving lives met the family who saved his. he received a new liver.

through a three story victorian. it is sunday, may 1. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. firefighters are trying to find the cause of a fire that started flames shooting into the air. it took firefighters about an hour to get that fire under control. no one was inside that building, and no one was hurt. >> every fire on the second and third floor, and we went into a defensive attack, to knock down the fire. >> the cause of that fire still under investigation at this hour. >> police are trying to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in a deadly head on crash in san jose. it happened on west carlos street and bird avenue. police say a woman in one of the cars was pronounced dead at

the scene. another man and woman were taken to the hospital and expected to survive. 90 boxes of documents fell off a trailer that got a flat tour and just coated that freeway with paper. it happened just past the san pedro exit yesterday. the papers were personal documents such as bank statements, court filings, and even tax forms with social security numbers. >> probably the worst i've ever been on in 20 years on caltran. >> we found someone out there, trying to pick up papers along the freeway. which we don't advise. >> the company who the driver works for, could face charges and may get a big cleanup bill. a man hunt is underway in a stabbing. it happened about 7:00 just outside the santa rosa city limits. investigators say two men were

riding inside a car when the passenger repeatedly stab the the driver. the car crashed and the attacker ran away. the victim is described only as a 51-year-old man who was transported to the hospital. there's no word on his condition, or the relationship between those two men. a preliminary hearing is set for tomorrow for the man charged with strangling a napa state hospital worker. napa county prosecutors say they will not seek the death penalty against jess willard massey. he is the man accused of killing psychiatric technician donna gross last october. the napa county district attorney says it will consider life in prison without parole. gunned down outside his home near 7th avenue. a motive is still under investigation, but police now say the shooting was not a random act. investigators are asking any witnesses to come forward.

there is a $10,000 reward being offered in this case. children in west oakland now have a new place to play. yesterday, about 600 volunteers from ka-boom, foresters life insurance, helped paint, and refurbish the wade park on johnson street. the oakland unified school district police department led the volunteer effort. the police chief says the neighborhood struggles. >> building this youth center this the shadow of our police headquarters creates a fun, safe, environment for kids. >> the chief says in addition to the park, the site will soon have a community library . characteristics similar to the pipeline involved in the

san bruno explosion. >> the pipelines located first are in antioch, and informational meetings have been held in those communities. joining us on the phone to talk about this is brian swanson, a spokesperson for pg and e. when exactly is this testing going to get started? and how similar are these pipelines to san bruno? >> we're starting work in mountain view, and antioch first in about a week or two. we'll start the tests in about a week or two. would we're prioritizing about 130 miles of our service area, with pipeline that has similar characteristics in size, and age to the pipeline that ruptured in san bruno. so we're starting there first this year, with more to come in the following years. >> i want to talk a little about the risk. i know we have some video of you guys testing a line in san jose. from what i've read, this basically involves filling a section of pipe and water, basically pumping up the

pressure in that pipe to high levels, then monitoring it, i guess. it may sound easy, but it is really safe. >> that's an active characterization. we first, remove all the gas in the pipeline be and fill that section of pipe that we're going to test, completely full of water. then we add a small amount of additional water in the pipe to increase the pressure in the pipe. water is not compressed, so only a small amount is needed to increase the pressure. if there's any problems, it's similar to a water main leak. we're going to have crews on stand by, ready to respond to any leaks that may happen. >> i know pg and e -- state regulators say they want you to test 105 miles of this pipeline. why not do it? what is the controversy over just getting this done? >> ultimately, we'll do

here are pictures from last year's event. it's free, and the public and no alcohol is allowed. but the festival begins at 10:00 a.m., and goes until 5:00 p.m. it takes place on a mile stretch of 23rd street. there will be three music stages. vender booths, and free health screenings. thousands are people are expected to take part in may bay marches and rallies across the bay area today. it is also a day used to call attention to immigration reform. labor rights supporters in san francisco will gather at 24th and mission before marching to civic center plaza. in san jose, people will start gathering as early as noon, and march until 4:00 p.m. it's march is going to begin on story road, and king road. it's going to end up in san jose city hall. a bill is making its way through the state legislature that would give cities and

counties a choice to opt-out of secure communities program. that program allows the federal government to check the immigration status of those arrested. this weekend, the state assemblies committee approved an opt-out measure. supporters say it provides valuable information at low cost to agencies. starting today, anyone who applies for social security, or other benefits will have to have an electronic payment method. the switch is expected to save $1 billion over the next decade for anyone currently receiving federal benefits by paper check, you have until march 2013 to switch to direct deposit. time now, 7:40 this morning. bart is going to ask for the public's health to try to figure out what kind of seats riders want. the first of nine seats will be held in oakland. the seat labs are going to

good morning to you. a bright start to the day. a live look from bay point this morning. a cool start out there, with a nice warm up on this first day of may. the death toll continues to rise in alabama after a deadly tornado this past wednesday. right now 248 people are confirmed dead in the state. volunteers are now responding. looking to lend a helping hand in tuscaloosa, alabama. volunteers helped unload bags of ice yesterday. others decided to grill up some food. others helped organize donations. volunteers say many people have nothing left after the devastating storm. >> my second home here, and i just feel like i had to come back and do something today. >> they've lost everything. i think water and food are coming, and they're very

appreciative of that. but the clothing that we had, has just been taken so quickly. >> across the south, several other tornadoes devastated the region. the death toll has now reached 339 across seven states. senator barbara boxer is reiterating the call to oil companies, she says they need to do a better job of fulfill be energy needs. >> we need to pressure oil refiners to step up, and increase their production of refined gasoline, and keep the gasoline here in the united states when it's found here in the united states. >> boxer made her comments yesterday at los angeles exxon station. this past week, exxonmobil reported a 1st quarter profit of $10 billion. that is a 69% increase from the year before. shell reported $6 billion in the 1st quarter profits, even as production dropped. that is 30% above the 1st quarter of 2010. gas prices continue to go

up in some parts of the bay area this weekend. aaa updated gas prices averages overnight. saying the average price for a regular gallon of gas is up a penny today in afternoon. it's going to cost you $4.31 a gallon. the average price in san jose remains unchanged. it is $4.26 a gallon. >> so where is all of this headed? joining us on the phone is uc berkely professor. good morning professor. >> good morning to you. >> yesterday, president obama blasted the oil companies record profits, but also urged congress to really end the $4 billion in subsidies for oil and gas companies. will it happen, and is that the answer to lowers prices? >> whether it's going to happen is a political issue. whether it will help lower prices, definitely not. gas prices are driven by a combination of international

prices that are being driven by turmoil in the middle east, but fundamentally, the dollar recovery, which is turning in pretty well the last several months. and the treasury will knock off refining capacity. and that is picking up. people are doing investments. but has not, has not been coming up sufficiently in the last several years. so here is an issue i think gas prices hovering to about $4 for a while now. >> do you think it will stay there? we've got summer coming up. it's not even memorial day yet. i've heard some experts saying as far as $6 a gallon. how far is this going? >> the short term and a long term issue. in the long term, i think that

there will be fundamental changes. if you look at the price of natural gas, today the price of gas, the price of crude oil into the united states is a racial of 30. which means that it used to be a racial of 5, now has created tremendous incentives to reduce crude oil based fuels. and we are seeing already in california several school districts, transferring their fleet to natural gas. if that happens, the demand for gasoline is going to fall and that is going to make issues, things simpler for consumers like us. i think that is going to be the fundamental transformation in the united states now that we have a flood of natural gas, we should see in the next several years a substantial substitution in our staff.

and that is going to help. in the meantime, i think that we should expect gasoline prices to remain at the levels, if not higher, than we are currently seeing. >> okay, we appreciate your time and insight for us. time now is 7:48. we do have some developing news right now. the highway patrol is on the scene of a fatal accident in san mateo. the highway patrol says a car went off the road and into a cliff area. firefighters are on the scene, but they have called the san mateo county coroner. a tow truck is also in the area. police in southern california are investigating a bizarre death after they say a man pushed a woman out of the car, and onto a freeway. it happened on friday in la crescenta. witnesses reportedly saw the man and woman fighting inside

the car. police say that's when the man shot the woman and then pushed her onto the 210 freeway. police later found that man, and say it appears he shot himself in the torso. investigators try to piece all of this story together. this morning, walnut police continue to search for a missing college student. 19-year-old james abriel was reported missing on monday, after a friend saw several notes that say he was suicidal. anyone with any information about his whereabouts is asked to contact authorities. the bodies of a well known ski mountaineer, and his girlfriend have been recovered from a sierra nevada mountain side. tip gar, and his girlfriend were killed five days ago by an avalanche. a search and rescue team found

three story victorian on 32nd, and martin luther king. it took firefighters about an hour to get the flames under control. firefighters say the fire is suspicious, because of where it started in a front stairwell. the owners of a santa cruz dispensary are spending part of the day cleaning out. take a look at this surveillance video. it shows, there it is, the moment two arsonists through a molotov cocktail into the building. the owner responded to the scene. he had a call from his alarm company. he did manage to stop the flames before they spread into the room where the marijuana is stored. >> we take hits from all angles. it's not just law enforcement, the federal government, local ordinances, burglars, everybody seems like they want, and they're coming at us. >> they are hoping the video

to get a live look at the devastation on the ground this morning. k roy illinois remains under threat this morning. the town is located near where the ohio and mississippi rivers meat. heavy rain has swollen those two rivers and now water is seeping underneath the levees and coming up from the ground. they're preparing to blow up another nearby levee to try to relieve the pressure. the prefecture fire department decided to call a search off, to give members some time to rebuild their lives. many of them lost members of their own families and homes in the march 11 disaster. a ceremony was held yesterday afternoon to formally end the search. right now, hundreds of bay area runners are lacing up their shoes to raise money for

year before. shell reported $6 billion in its 1st quarter profits, even as production dropped. that is a 30% above the 1st quarter for them in 2010. aaa says the average price of regular gallons of gas is up a penny today in san francisco. the average price in san jose remains unchanged. also at $4.26 a gallon. north bay elementary students may be without a ride to school next year, after their school board voted to cut bus service. it took the action to help close a $350,000 budget gap. the marin independent journal reports that will leave students without a bus ride in the fall. the board president suggested patients help out by carpooling or creating a community walk the two miles to the school. in union city, voters are trying to make it easier to

have a say on an emergency school funding measure. it would raise $3 million for the new haven school district. the district says the tax, which is $180 a year over four years would keep class sizes small, and save school programs. if you still have your ballot, you can drop it off until tuesday at city hall. you can also go to our lady of the rosary catholic church, or fire station 32. considering a plan to lay off its fire chief to help close a $1.7 million deficit. according to the herald, the city council will consider eliminating the fire chief position. that would save the city more than $284,000. the elimination would be part of a larger plan to merge both the police and the fire departments. including the elimination of two firefighters positions, a

starting tomorrow, there will be a new way of dealing out justice in san francisco. community courts are scheduled to open in the mission, and bay view neighborhoods. the idea is to have those cited for quality of life crimes to go before a panel of people who live in the neighborhood where the alleged offense occurred. the volunteer court would sentence the accused to community service, not jail time. san francisco's district attorney says this will free up resources to prosecute more serious crimes. charlie sheen's torpedo of truth campaign arrived here and raise money for bryan stow. he announced before the show he would donate to the bryan stow fund. baseball fans also continue to support stow. today the san francisco giants

civic center plaza. a march in east san jose will end at san jose city hall with special speakers and cultural performances. a bile bill dealing with immigration is making its way through the legislature. it would give cities and counties the chance to opt-out of the program. they approved an opt-out measure. supporters say it provides valuable information at no cost to local agencies. the death toll continues to rise in a tornado ravaged south. live in one of the hardest hit areas, tuscaloosa, alabama, with what survivers are focusing on today. >> reporter: yeah, kind of some changes today. switching towards rescue, and recovery, excuse me, search and recovery, net of search and res -- instead of search and

university. anyone with information about his whereabouts are asked to call police. vallejo police are looking for a man who shot a teenager. signaturers -- investigators say the victim might have had some sort of run in with the shooter, or shooters at a gas station prior to the attack. anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the vallejo police department. learning new information about the fatal shooting in oakland on friday night. police say the 39-year-old was gunned down outside his home on 7th avenue, near lake merritt. police now say that the shooting was not a random act. investigators are asking for any witnesses to come forward. is there a $10,000 conscious -- there is a $10,000 reward offered in this case. napa county prosecutors say they are not going to seek the

death penalty against jess willard massey. he is the man accused of killing donna gross last october. napa county district attorney says it will pursue a life sentence, without the possibility of parole. the highway patrol is investigating a bizarre accident on highway 101 in san rafael. 90 documents fell off a vehicle and coated the road with paper. the site caused a traffic jam, and a few accidents as drivers slowed to stair. the papers were personal documents, such as bank statements, court documents, even tax filings with social security numbers. >> that's one of those things, it happens. >> we even had citizens out there, trying to pick up papers. which we don't advise. >> the driver was cited for an unsecured load, and not having a driver's license.

birthday. things did not start off well in washington. jonathan sanchez hit 7 of the first 10 batters he faced yesterday. but it was another walk that eventually gave the giants the win. took john lannan deep for the game tieing home run. in the 7th inning, aubrey huff drove in the game winning run. brian wilson made it a little interesting in the 9th, but got out of the bases loaded jam by striking out adam laroche to end the game. the giants are going to have to get through the next four to six weeks without their hottest hitter. pablo sandoval will have surgery tuesday after breaking a bone in his right wrist. the giants called up ryan rollenjer from aaa fresno. kurt suzuki kept it close with his second home run of the

on tuesday, the prince will meet with president obama at the white house and give a speech at georgetown university about international sustainability. president obama is due to make an official state visit to britain at the end of the month. president obama doesn't mind joking about the controversy surrounding his birth place. it happened at the correspondence dinner last night. president obama stuck to the tradition, and spoke during the dinner. his speech turned into a stinging roast of donald trump. >> no one is happier, no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than the donald. and that's because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter. like did we fake the moon landing? what really happened in
