morning news. good morning. thank you for waking up with us. it's monday may 2nd. i'm pam cook. we begin this morning with the death of osama bin laden. last night president obama announced that a small team of americans carried out an attack on a compound in pakistan killing the master mind behind the september 11 terrorist attacks. news of bin laden's death triggered a huge response around the world. i want to take you live to ground zero in new york city this morning where a large crowd gathered last night and you can see there are still people there this morning. this is of course where so many people lost their lives and their loved ones on september 11, 2001 at the hands of osama bin laden. shortly after the president announced bin laden's death, a
4:32 am
patriotic celebration broke out. [ cheering and applause ] >> a huge crowd of people broke into rendition of the star spangled banner last night. others could be heard chanting usa, usa. plenty of red, white and blue could be seen. a smaller celebration began in times square. it was the same scene at washington d.c. at the white house. right now all is clear. not many people gathered, but last night a huge crowd similar to the one at ground zero couldn't help but celebrate bin laden's death. >> usa, usa,. >> this crowd started forming right as the president began his statement last night announcing the death open bin laden. it quickly grew into thousands. renditions of the star spangled banner could also be heard there.
4:33 am
last night's crowd may have been the largest to gather spontaneously at the white house since president obama's election night victory in 2008. now we did learn overnight that bin laden was buried at sea. a u.s. official who spoke anonymously did not say where it occurred, but islamic practice and tradition calls for a burial within 24 hours. the sea burial was decided according to the spokesperson because finding a country willing to accept bin laden's remains would have been difficult. now the raid on bin laden took place in pakistan. u.s. forces entered the terrorist leaders compound yesterday. this is video showing the compound on fire shortly after the raid. u.s. forces reportedly shot bin laden in the head during a 40 minute long fire fight. it's believed that bin laden had the compound built five years ago. white house officials say they learned of the hiding place

4:35 am
and of course that applies to the thousands of travelers who usually fly internationally here at sfo. now the state department warns there is an enhanced risk for anti-american violence. what is unusual about this alert is that it doesn't mention a specific country or region where americans should be extra cautious. instead the advisory says this alert is worldwide. and it says it will remain in effect until august 1st. it also instructs americans abroad to "limit travel outside their homes and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations." now just to be clear, this travel alert does not apply to airports on u.s. soil. only to the people flying internationally out of those airports. the security level at bay area airports from oakland to san jose to here at sfo is unchanged. i spoke with the duty manager here at sfo about 15 minutes ago and he says if there is an order to change the security level here and boost police patrols and security presence, that order would come from the tsa. and the duty manager says they have not received any instructions to do that from
4:36 am
