abbottabad. it's believed bin laden had been at the compound for five years. white house officials learned of the hiding place earlier this year. 7:01. we have live team coverage on the death of the world's most- wanted terrorist. we have reports from washington, d.c., to sfo, to little kabul in fremont. but first let's go to ktvu's kraig debro. he's at the b.a.r.t. station. good morning kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. there is a little bit of extra security onhan. the reason -- well you just heard part of the reason, that threat of -- threat of the al

qaeda member. this is a federally funded operation made up of b.a.r.t. officers. the group was scheduled to do a training exercise. in the wake of what's happened, that training exercise has been put on hold. 18 members are on the job on a daily basis but more will be riding b.a.r.t. trains today. what is new today are the number of extra employees wearing yellow vests joining law enforcement. b.a.r.t. also wants riders to serve as -- as eyes and ears. >> i never had my doubt. i think justice is served one way or another in this life. >> reporter: the move on extra security is -- is against the retaliation attacks that have possibly been threatened in the wake of osama bin laden's death. this moving, the west oakland station is just one area where critical asset patrols will be onhand.

we've been gathering reaction from the customers about death on osama bin laden. it's difficult to find anyone who is not in favor of what the u.s. did over the weekend. we'll have more on that coming up on "mornings on 2." reporting live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. security at u.s. airports is on a lot of people's minds this morning. allie rasmus joins us from sfo where a worldwide travel advisory has been issued. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's been issued by the u.s. state department, it warns that there is an enhanced risk for anti-american -- anti-american violence. right now we're inside terminal 2 here at san francisco international airport. behind us you can see the security checkpoint. it looks a little bit long.

there's probably a 15-minute wait to get there. and there's also a little bit of a line at the check-out counter. this morning we did see some san francisco police patrolling the terminal. san francisco police say their officers are being extra aware and vigilant had light of any suspicious actty. they might be seeing. however, the airport spokespersons say the overall support have not received any special instructions from the tsa to step up security here. however, some passengers that we talked to this morning say they are relieved to hear the news of binned bin -- of bin laden's death. >> i feel more secure today. >> reporter: you mean flying? >> yeah. i think his whole network has

been weakened. >> reporter: while the security level is relatively low, it's been different in new york, d.c., newsroom, l.a. if you are flying to those -- new jersey, l.a., if you are flying to those airports, you will notice higher security. well, many bay area people who have lost loved ones on 9/11 are reacking -- reacting. this man has been waiting ten years to hear the news. >> i never had a doubt. i think justice is served in any life. >> his wife was a victim on the

action from the financial market the around the world. we're still following overnight news coming from fremont. very sensetation at a strip mall ended just a -- tense situation at a strip mall ended just a little while ago. there were no signs of a bomb but police sealed off the mall on christie street for several hours. police say that man is in custody now and he has serious mental problems. we have new virginia from an early-morning fire in san leandro, now this happened at a gardening supply store. it's on east 14th street. firefighters rushed their shortly before 2:00 a.m. they say part of the roof collapsed. no firefighters were hurt. the store evener showed up and said it appears an electrical problem triggered the fire. a man who stabbed another man on an ac transit bus in richmond, police are telling

ktvu this happened about 8:00 last night on the 72 line on san pablo and barrett avenues. the suspect and the victim had an argument before attack. the 26-year-old victim was stabbed at least twice but he's expected to be okay. 7:19 -- 7:19. gabrielle giffords is back at the houston hospital where she's been recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. giffords had hoped to see the space shuttle "endeavour" leave on its final vision. it was orangely scheduled to launch on friday. her husband mark kelly is the commander. the crew is continuing to train while they wait for nasa to fix a news box. the owners of the sacramento kings have reportedly made their redigs is -- their decision about the

actions are definitely not the view of the whole community and that's not how we feel. >> reporter: fremont does have the largest afghan population in the united states. this is the islamic center. right next door is the little kabul market and within this strip mall along thornton avenue at the very end of it is the almadena education center, another nonprofit education center. about ten minutes here in fremont is another one which pushes understanding between muslims and the united states. the director says "the major chapter on the war on -- of the war on terror with the death of osama bin laden, we hope for a better dialogue between the u.s. and the muslim world." he goes on to say this war has lost millions of dollars and a lot of loss of life, including

those servicemembers. that message is from the service director. we're live in fremont gauging reaction from largest afghan community here in the united states. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. with osama bin laden dead, there's now speculation on who will take over the lead in al qaeda. i i i man al heir rarecy is -- it's speck -- a al-hiri is thought to be one. and we learned overnight that osama bin laden's body was buried at sea. a u.s. official speaking anonymously said finding a country willing to accept bin laden's remains would have been

difficult. according to islam, burial at sea is permitted in certain circumstances such as a long voyage where the body may decay and the risk that enemies may dig up the grave and mutilate the body. islamic tradition also call for burial to happen within 24 hours of death. although the 4-hour rule has not always been done by the u.s. just a day after president obama authorized the operation to kill osama bin laden, the world's most wanted terrorist was actually the butt of a joke. >> people think bin laden is hiding in the hindu kuch. but -- but did you know that every day from 4:00 to 5:00, he hosts a show on c-span." that was seth miers. >> as you saw there, president obama had laughed at the joke.

now we know he will already given the order to kill bin laden. a suspected drunk driver hit a woman in her front yard. drivers say the woman jumped the sidewalk, pinned the woman to home and took off. it happened on snell avenue yesterday morning. victim identified as 79-year- old diana punsack later died at the hospital. >> just a beautiful day -- lady. she knew everyone around here. everyone knew her. police arrested the driver and three passengers. police say alcohol was involved. 7:36. well, pg&e could begin high- pressure testing on pipelines in two bay area cities as early as this week.

the death of osama bin laden brought immediate attention to one of the sites

of the 9/11 attacks. this is ground zero where new yorkers reacted with jubilation to the news of bin laden's death. we'll have a live report from there shortly. meantime, bin laden was not found hiding in a cave, he was found in a mansion. we'll have more on that in just a moment. ten years ago, former president george w. bush said he wanted osama bin laden dead or alive. last night after the news of osama bin laden's death, he released a statement -- 7:44. well, the news about osama bin laden's death spread quickly all over the country. some people actually found out about it at a baseball game.

[ cheers ] >> you are listening to some of the fans at citizens bank ballpark in philadelphia. they started chanting after they found out. it all happened as the phillies were playing the meting but the players on the field -- playing the mets. but the players on the field didn't know what all of the chanting was about at first. last night, the white house announced president obama 0 would make a statement but they did not say what the statement would be about. then there was a tweet saying the president would speak at 10:30. then at 10:35, keith urban tweeted he had been told by a reputable person that osama bin laden had been killed. now, president obama didn't end up making the official

statement until 11:35 east coast time. 7:45. again, bin laden was not found hiding in a remote cave in afghanistan where most people thought that he was. he was living living in a huge custom-built mansion in pakistan. kraig boswell has more from washington, d.c. >> reporter: good morning. yeah. we're learning more from some of the navy s.e.a.l.es saying that -- the navy s.e.a.l.es saying he didn't look sick at all. president obama said the u.s. officials got a lead on bin laden's location in august. president obama announced the news of osama bin laden's death late sunday evening. >> the united states has conducted an operation that killed osama bin laden, the leader of al qaeda, and a terrorist who is responsible for the murderer of thousands of innocent men, women and

the unused tickets and gave refunds to passengers whose tour was cut short. there was an army of san francisco police officers protecting osama bin laden during his fund-raising trip to last week -- trip last week. we may never know how much that cost san francisco. a street in south of san francisco market has been reopened after being closed for the demolition of the transbay terminal. harrison street was closed friday night. that's when all of the jack hammers and heavy machines went to work, picking apart the concrete. the work will continue through the end of the month. we have some breaking news right now that -- i want to let everyone know -- two obama

morning dna tests prove osama bin laden is dead. officials didn't say where or how the dna testing was done. we're also learning this morning that bin laden's body was buried at sea because it would have been hard to find a country willing to take in and accept the remains. a u.s. official says in keeping with islamic tradition, osama bin laden was buried within 24 hours of his death. osama bin laden died there in his compound in abbottabad in pakistan. u.s. forces entered his pantion there yesterday after president obama gave the approval on friday. the video you are looking at shows that compound on fire after the raid. u.s. forces reportedly shot bin laden in the head during a 40- minute firefight. it's believed that binned len built this compound about five years ago -- bin laden built this compound about five years ago. the white house found out about the compound earlier this year.

hillary clinton says the war on terrorism is not over but she says this is proof that the u.s. never abandons justice. >> i know there are some who doubted this day would ever come, who questioned our resolve and our reach. let us remind ourselves, this is america. we rise to the challenge, we persevere and we get the job done. >> clinton made the remarks just about an hour and a half ago. she went on to call on changes. kraig debro is live in oakland. what can b.a.r.t. commuters expect this morning? >> reporter: well, tori, they are gonna be seeing a lot of people wearing yellow vests. you are not gonna see it down here, a critical asset team is

supply business. firefighters rushed to the store shortly before 2:00 a.m. say part of the roof collapsed. they say electrical problem involved a fan. and richmond police are looking for another a man who -- for a man who stabbed another man. this happened on the 72 line of san pablo and barrett avenue. the suspect and victim got into an argument before the attack. the 26-year-old victim was stabbed twice but is expected to be okay. wounded arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is back in the houston hospital where she's been recuperating. she hoped to see the space shuttle "endeavour" take off on its final message. her husband is commander for the flight. kelly and others are back in houston while they await the fix of the fuse box. nasa says sunday is the earliest the shuttle may lift off. it was not immediately known if

national security advisers leading up to this raid. reaction about osama bin laden's death is also coming in from the religious community. a spokesman for the pope benedict xvi and bin laden says -- for pop said that bin laden will have to -- for the pope benedict xvi said that bin laden will have to answer to god. 8:49. back here at home, a suspected drunk driver in san jose hit and killed a woman who was gardening in her front yard. the crash left part of the house caved in at roding drive and snell avenue. mains say the driver jumped the sidewalk, pinned the woman to the house and then drove off. the woman, diana punsack, later died at the hospital.

neighbors say the grandson was in the court yard minutes before this happened. >> just before all of this, police say the 28-year-old female driver had left the scene of another hit-and-run crash on blossom hill road. the victim actually followed her and called police. according to police, alcohol was involved. ten minutes before 9:00. pg&e could begin high-pressure tests 0 pipelines in two bay area cities as early as this week. they will use pressurized water to check whether the pipes are structurally sound. the pipes are part of 150 miles of pipeline that are similar to the line that exploded in san bruno last year. pg&e says the tests should not disrupt service. the fifth and final snow survey will be conducted in the seer you -- sierra today.
