worldwide manhunt. in a statement the former president george w. bush said this momentous achievement marks a victory for america for people who seek peace around the world and for those who lost loved ones on september 11, 2001. amid concerns of retaliation the u.s. state department says it will step up security at u.s. diplomatic areas around the world. >> i think the successor will be nothing on the scale of what we've seen of bin laden. >>reporter: the president's top counter terrorism officials say that the president will be speaking in more detail about the mission leading up to the death tonight from the white house. >> the president said that there's nothing we can't do as

a nation. >> i think we can all agree this is a good day for america. our country has kept its commitment to see that justice is done. the world is safer. it is a better place because of the death of osama bin laden. >> u.s. officials say that his body was buried at sea from the deck. the body was buried within the 24 hour time frame required by islamic law. we're getting new video of the compound where the seals killed him. there were flames shooting out of the compound, and these daylight pictures show a large pakistani military presence. in just the past hour or so, a white house homeland security advisor held a briefing about the raid. he said osama bin laden was

hiding behind a woman when he was attacked and that the woman is believed to be one of his wifes. the largest afghan community in the u.s. is right here in the bay area, and members are reacting to this news. the owner of little coble market said he was surprised, but wished for this day sooner. he says he's now concerned about repercussions. >> i'm worried about home because too much danger. they're going to do something, but we don't know when and how. >> the executive director of the lead organization is also praising the turn of events, saying in a statement with the major chapter closed, we hope for a new chapter of dialogue

and peace between the u.s. and muslim world. the concern of revenge has caused several transit agencies and hubs to increase security, even though no specific threats have been made. >>reporter: we're downtown, and police are on high alert watching places that people gather to protest and watching muni. you can't find anyone who doesn't know what happened, but you can find people worried about a backlash. >> i'm kind of scared about it. >> you never know what's going to happen after, retaliations, repercussions or whatever. >>reporter: we caught up with one of 5k-9 units being deployed. those not on duty were called into work. they started to put inspectors into train stations and on transmutes after his death was announced.

inspectors are being ordered to inspect trains at their terminals. >> going forward, we're working with sfpd to put more safety personnel on the subway and stations. >> we're bringing in every officer we can and bringing in extra operations staff member. >> an asset team is being deployed, and they're trained with federal funds and counter terrorism tactics. bart has already sworn nontransporetation workers to wear yellow vests and be visible. the extra measures is money well spent if it means bin laden is gone. >> i think it's a wonderful victory for america, and i think it's going to give us a lot of appeal for peace in the future. >>reporter: we talked to the valley transit and they say they've not brought in extra law enforcement, instead telling people they do have to be on alert for suspicious circumstances or behavior.

reporting live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> well, craig, it is business as usual at bay area airports. spokesperson here at oakland international, san jose all say the thousands of passengers checking in and going through security shouldn't notice anything different today. police officers patrolled terminal two just like they do every other day of the week. a spokesperson says the tsa hasn't been instructed to change normal procedures. >> right now we don't have information from any intelligence or security personnel. >>reporter: it's the same story at oakland airport. >> the same security procedures are in place in terms of what the passengers will see. >> although they couldn't elaborate on any security changes out of public's view. >> any changes behind the scenes in the last 24 hours? >> what the public sees is certainly what we want to focus

on. >>reporter: the u.s. state department issued a worldwide alert to those traveling abroad of enhanced risk of anti- american violence in retaliation for the death of osama bin laden. some travelers said that the only change they've noticed is a sense of relief. >> i fold more secure today that he's dead. >>reporter: flying you mean? >> sure. i think the whole network has been weak end. >> there's still terrorists out there, but the main person is out of the picture now. >> i asked a spokesperson from the tsa west coast office on the phone if tsa screeners and security personnel are doing anything additional or different, and he said no, and added, we're always on a heightened state of alert at all of our nation's airports. reporting live in oakland, channel 2 news. a 33-year-old man in pakistan posted late night

messages on his twitter page about helicopters flying overhead with the the same time they were attacking the compound. apparently the man had no idea he was documenting the attack that killed bin laden. the man wrote there was a helicopter hovering overhead and a huge bang. he speculated that since the helicopters did not appear to be pakistani, there must be a complicated situation going on. in new york city when news broke of the death, people poured into the area around ground zero. construction is underway on we placements of the twin towers. almost 3,000 people lost their lives that day. one woman who's brother died in the attack brought flowers to the site and said that today was a long time coming.

hundreds of people celebrated in times scare overnight they filled the air with cheers of usa, yes, we can. many people are overjoyed, but at the same time they never thought this moment would finally arrive. a large group of people outside the white house. the group quickly gathered after president obama announced bin laden's death. tonight the president will hold a dinner for congressional leaders and their spouses. we're not sure if he will say more at tonight's event. many bay area families who lost loved ones have strong reactions to the death of osama

involved. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is back in a houston hospital. she had traveled to florida to see the space shuttle leave on its final mission. her husband is a shuttle commander for the flight. last friday's blast off was delayed due it a faulty fusebox and nasa say sunday is the earliest endeavor could lift off. it's not known if giffords will go back to florida to watch the second try. the judge in a murder trial of michael jackson's former doctor has delayed the start of trial for at least four months. that came after defense attorneys asked for a delay to prepare their case. los angeles county superior court judge michael pastor today said he will release potential jurors currently being screened. the trial of doctor conrad murray is now set to start sometime in september. a tense situation in a strip mall in fremont came to an end this morning when a man in a white van who claims he had a bomb turned himself in.

there were no signs of a bomb, but police had sealed off the strip mall for several hours. officers say the man who has serious mental problems is now in custody. an early morning fire happened at a gardening supply store called grower's choice on east 14th street. firefighters rushed to the store shortly before 2 a.m. they say part of the roof collapsed, but no firefighters were hurt. the store owners showed up and said it appears an electrical problem with a fan started the fire? : a man who stabbed another man on an ac strains it bus in richmond is on the loose today. police tell ktvu the attack happened around 8 o'clock last night on the 72 line. the suspect and victim got into an argument before the attack. the 26-year-old victim was stabbed twice are but is expected to be okay.

weather wise we're gearing up for another pleasant day. take a look at that beautiful sky. 64 degrees, a light breeze with fair skies in store for us today. current temperatures rebounding pretty good. along the coast we had low clouds hovering early, and will remain with patchy clouds along the coastline. right now 70 degrees already in areas of santa rosa. 73 in fairfield, notice the coast, 60 degrees san francisco, 62 in red wood city, mid upper 60s in areas right around the view. why we're beginning to see the cool down, notice the disturbance to the north. that is bringing us the cooler weather and had kicked up the onshore flow that brings the westerly winds and coastal clouds to the area.

thursday and friday we begin to cool a little bit. so do you think this is going to be kind of more warm weather coming down the road a little bit? the fifth and final snow survey will be conducted today. they'll measure the snow pack at several spots today. last month's snow survey showed the state wide average is 163% of normal. doctors treating the san francisco giants fan badly beaten at a dodger stadium parking lot are encouraged by his day-to-day progress. he's being slowly taken off medication that has kept him in a coma since the attack. they say there have been no signs of seizures, which had happened the last time they

tried to take him off this medication. they add he's also snoring, which they consider a good sign. during the weekend the giants two farm teams presented the family with a check for more than $43,000 to help with medical bills. the kings are going to stay in sacramento for at least one more season. they'll remain in sacramento for now to give the mayor a chance to follow through on his promise for a new arena. they say they'll relocate the team if the city does not follow through on its promise. they were strongly considering moving the kings to an one i'm. still ahead, we're getting an idea when they start testing hundreds of miles of pipeline for safety.

. pressure tests on pipelines in two cities as early as this week. they will use pressure iced water to check with the pipes if they're structurally sound.

the pipes are part of within hundred 50 miles of pipeline similar to the lines that exploded last year. they say the tests should not disrupt service. and it appears san francisco's crime lab continues to be short staffed. today's examiner reports the lab is currently staffed with just 4dna technicians, even though the police department promised to have the lab fully staffed with 11 workers to handle the big backlog. the city is currently in the process of hiring several more technicians. in the meantime it cost $150,000 every month to send criminal evidence to an outside lab. the we'll take a closer look into the science that allowed the u.s. to find, bring
