pg&e is releasing gas from a pipeline. the reason why it concerns residents this morning. new information on the mission that killed the world's most wanted terrorist. new video of osama bin laden's compound and the documents now being poured over by the c.i.a. it's been more than three years since the infamous tiger attack at the san francisco zoo. the reason a new big cat is coming to the city. it's all ahead here on the ktvu morning news.

good morning. thank you for waking up with us. it's tuesday may 3rd. i'm pam cook. i hear it's going to be pretty warm around some parts of the bay. let's check in with steve paulson. good morning, steve. good morning, pam. we have a breeze decent for some. patchy low clouds, inland sunny today. temperatures though anywhere from 60 to low to mid-60s to 70s and a few upper 70s to low 80s. here's sal. steve, right now highway 4 traffic moves well up to the willow pass grade with no major problems. traffic is continuing to move well. also the morning commute on westbound interstate 80 looks good but there may be an accident in san pablo area. check on that and give you a complete check of traffic in just a few moments. now back to the desk. thank you, sal. today pg&e will be getting ready for another test to make sure another san bruno disaster does not happen again. jade hernandez is live in mountain view with what the utility company is doing to protect customers. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning.

pg&e will vent the gas line 132a later today. it joins the pipeline right here at middle field road right here at this intersection here at shoreline boulevard. now if this line sounds familiar, it should. it's the same line which runs up the peninsula and exploded in san bruno. a few weeks ago ktvu attended along with concerned residents a meeting pg&e held. pg&e alerted neighbors they would be testing the pipeline and the day has come where the utility will fill the pipeline with water under high pressure to see if it's safe and won't burst. but first it will be vented of gas. the venting is scheduled for today. residents from shoreline golf links to the middle school will be effected. pg&e indicated the gas inside 132a will be quickly released into the atmosphere and should dissipate without harm to the environment. mountain view and antioch are the first cities to have their gas line pressure tested following the san bruno disaster.

those concerned with gas odor should call pg&e and the number is at the bottom of your screen this morning. of course we'll have more from mountain view coming up. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. we're now learning more about how the c.i.a. finally discovered osama bin laden's hiding place. a u.s. official says one of bin laden's personal couriers unknowingly led agents to the walled compound in pakistan. navy seals found bin laden in a bedroom and shot him once in the head and once in the chest. president obama and his advisors were able to watch the whole 40 minute mission in realtime. the president and his advisors watched the c.i.a. director on a video screen narrating from agency headquarters what was happening far away in pakistan. in these photos from the white house situation room they're waiting to hear a single word,

geronimo, the code whether bin laden was captured or dead. >> i want to recognize the heros that carried out this incredible dangerous mission as well as all the military and counterterrorism professionals who made the mission possible. >> president obama was given a standing ovation at a dinner for congressional leaders last night by democrats and republicans. the president says he hopes the lawmakers can harness their current spirit of unity to confront the many challenges ahead. we have new amateur video this morning that shows bin laden easter rest compound. you can see the wreckage of the u.s. helicopter lost during the raid on sunday u.s. officials say navy seals were able to seize valuable information inside that compound. the c.i.a. is already analyzes confiscated hard drives. they're hoping to find clues that might lead to bin laden's right hand man.

a new propaganda tape featuring osama bin laden could soon be made public. u.s. intelligence believes bin laden made the tape right before his death. now it's not clear yet if the tape is going to be audio or video, but government leaders say the timing of this tape is coincidental and it is not an indication that the terrorist leader knew that u.s. forces were zeroing in on him. however, there are fears that a new bin laden tape could be a call to action for other al qaeda members. bin laden's death is leading president obama to make a trip to ground zero. on thursday the president will visit the site of the deadly terrorist attack to meet with 9/11 families. the visit comes after huge crowds gathered at ground zero on sunday to celebrate bin laden's death. this will be president obama's first visit to the area since 2008. mr. obama marked the september 11 anniversary at the pentagon the last two years. bin laden's september 11 attack on the u.s. resulted in

the loss of 3,000 innocent lives. 40 were on board that plane bound for san francisco. many people are now visiting a memorial in union city that honors the people who died on united flight 93. the pilot was jason dale who grew up in san jose. his nephew paid an emotional visit to the memorial yesterday evening. >> we really miss him. our whole family misses him. his son got married about a year and a half ago. and he wasn't there for that. and that was hard. it was really hard. >> this september flight 93 family members will gather to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11. their loved ones fought back against the terrorist causing the jet to go down in a remote field in pennsylvania instead of in washington d.c. some book publishers think osama bin laden's death could be good for business. coming up in just about eleven minutes the three books that are now being rushed to store

shelves. and we have much more on the death of osama bin laden on our website ktvu.com. there's a special section that includes illustrations of bin laden's compound as well as more reaction from the families of 9/11 victims. just look for the osama bin laden tab right on our home page. in other news this morning oakland police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a homicide. officers spotted the man in the area of tenth and willow streets at about 5:15 last night. take a look at this. guns drawn. the officers were able to courtenned off several blocks. they went house to house searching for that man. they found him and arrested him nearly two hours later. they have not told us which killing they believe he's connected to. two church employees and volunteer accused of ohm bestling more than half a billion dollars from their own church. the theft at the church in danville had apparently been

going on for years. office manager is accused of forging $220,000 in checks. police say she worked with facilities manager and church volunteer to steal an additional $360,000. here's what parishoners say. >> some people have devious motivations. and that's unfortunate and sad and i would say those two words describe it. unfortunate and sad. >> police say the three used the money for luxury items including her two story home with a pool in black hawk which is now for sale. all three were arrested yesterday. the san francisco zoo is getting a new tiger. it's more than three years after that infamous attack. the ten year old siberian tiger will replace the tiger that police shot to death after she fatally mauled a san jose

teenager on christmas day 2007. the zoo director originally said she had no plans to replace the tiger, but she changed her mind after the financially struggling omaha zoo pleaded her to take a 300- pound siberian tiger named martha off its hands. if you live in san francisco you could soon be paying more to park your car. the city transit agency board is scheduled to vote on fee changes this afternoon. residential parking permits could increase $2 to a total of $100 per year. the board will also consider increasing the fines for parking ticketsful the agency says it needs to raise fees because of rising administrative and enforcement costs. all right. right now the time is 4:39. want to check in with sal for a complete look at bay area traffic. good morning, sal. good morning, pam. right now traffic is actually doing okay around the bay area as we look at interstate 80 here. the traffic is moving along nicely if you are driving on 80

westbound coming out toward the macarthur maze. no major issues here as you drive out toward the maze. also the morning commute looks good as you drive out to the bay bridge toll plaza. now we told you about an accident west 80 in san pablo just west of solano avenue. there's a vehicle in the left lane. now it looks like i just found out they may be sending a paramedic unit to this area this westbound 80 near solano avenue on the east shore freeway. move along and take a look at the south bay northbound 280 traffic looks good getting up to highway 17. at 4:40, let's go to steve. thank you, sal. well, some patchy fog on the coast. it's moving north to south. i'll get out of the way so you can see it. see that system driving down and the fog which is there now will start to get wiped out. that's going to give us a sunny day. we still have a westerly breeze but we expect that to turn more northerly later on. 40s and 50s on the temps. the wind though out of the west isn't too bad. west 17 at sfo. west 13 at oakland. southwest at napa.

south-southwest at fairfield. so the delta breeze is in place. santa rosa calm. once that turns northerly then that means temperature wills start to really start to warm up a little bit. you can see how the highs building in and everything being pushed to the south. that will be our day today it will be sunny, the temperature forecast here we go from 40s and 50s and by 9:00 we'll start to see a lot of 60s closer inland and 50s along the coast and then watch how the 70s and then there's the 80s by noon beginning to creep in. and then later on today we'll have some 60s by the coast, 70s around the bay and some 80s. 80 fairfield, 82 antioch. 82 morgan hill. 80 santa rosa. little tough closer to the coast because we'll see that fog there for a while. but still should be warmer with a lot of 70s in between. sunny today, breezy from west then turning more northerly. that's patchy fog. warm inland. temperatures though will continue to warm up into wednesday. in fact we'll be in the upper 80s -- reverse that. it should be the coast should be 60s, 7 0z and inland 80s.

and then see cooler weather as we head towards the weekend. thank you, steve. well, the voice recorder from a deadly plane crash is recovered from deep in the atlantic ocean. why the new discovery overnight may not be enough to find the cause of the air france crash that killed more than 200 people two years ago. and it's getting to be that time of year. the two things you can do now to protect your home from wild fires. good morning. right now on the east shore freeway traffic is okay. but we do have a crash westbound 80. we'll tell you more about that straight ahead.

good morning. little bit of patchy fog but it's not going to last too long. and it's mainly on the marin coast, san francisco, san mateo. look for sunshine today. it will turn more northerly which means temperatures low 80s inland. 60s, 7 0z closer to the coast. that's the sound of the army corp of engineers exploding a large section of the mississippi river levee in missouri. it's an attempt to protect the north illinois town from rising flood waters. the break will get up to four feet of water off the river. some people fought the plan though because the levee blast will completely flood a prime patch of farmland. within the last 20 minutes we learned that rescuers may

have spotted that group of boy scouts who have been stranded in an arkansas forest. rescue operations are expected to resume shortly for the six scouts and two troop leaders from louisiana. now louisiana pastor says he heard that a crew in a helicopter spotted a campfire overnight with two adults and about the same number of kids that are reported missing. other boy scout leaders have expressed hope that the group's training has kicked in. >> the situation sit down assess the situation and you know do the best thing that's for the safety and health of all participants. >> a search for the group began yesterday when they didn't return from their trip. last week's tornado outbreak in the south is now the biggest on record for a single 24 hour period. 313 tornadoes hit the area from 8:00 a.m. on april 27th to 8:00 a.m. on april 28th. now that's much higher than the

previous record of 148 twisters in 1974. last week's storms killed 342 people across seven states. several hundred people are still reported missing. take a look at this. a tornado in new zealand has killed at least one person. you can see the twister touching down across part of new zealand's largest city sending cars and debris flying. at least 20 people have been hurt. now tornadoes are apparently not uncommon in new zealand, but they tend to be smaller than the ones that we see here in the united states. overnight french investigators found and recovered the cockpit voice recorder from an air france flight that plunged into the atlantic ocean two years ago killing all 228 people on board. a submarine found the machine nearly 13,000 feet below the ocean's surface. investigators hope the discovery will help them determine what caused the crash, but they warn that the recordings may want be usable

because they have been under water so long. the death of osama bin laden comes at the start of military appreciation month. many military families here in the bay area are celebrating america's bold move to take out the world's most wanted terrorist. but at the same time they realize that bin laden's death could make life even more dangerous for their loved ones serving overseas. >> our men and women that are out in afghanistan, in iraq, in other countries, they are at risk. they've got a bigger target on their back now. >> now the military families also realize that the global war against terrorism is far from over. book publishers are hoping bin laden's death will mean increased sales. random house says it's working quickly to release a collection of essays on the terrorist leader. meanwhile the free press is also working on an electronic version of a book focused on the conflict between the u.s. and al qaeda. and st. martin's press says

it's rushing a book about the navy seal unit that killed bin laden. that should be released some time in the next week. in southern california a brush fire on cat salina island is keeping firefighters busy this morning. that fire started yesterday afternoon near the cat leonina yacht club. it's burned about 40 acres so far. no word on when firefighters might have that fire fully contained. no one's been hurt so far and the fire has not damaged any buildings. this is one of several fire that is broke out across southern california yesterday as temperatures hit the 90s. cal fire is urging homeowners to prepare for wild fire season here. the wet winter has left many areas overgrown. that brush and grass will dry up as temperatures warm up. and then create potentially hazardous fire conditions. cal fire says homeowners should remember to clear 100 feet of defensible space around your home and have an evacuation plan. san francisco police report a growing crime wave in the

city's upscale marina and cal hollow neighborhoods. there have been a series of armed robberies and breakins during the past month. many of those crimes have taken place during broad daylight. police issued an important safety message in a neighborhood meeting last night. >> if you don't have something to protect yourself, your business, your property a little better than the next guy, the opportunist is going to keep walking and look for the easier mark. >> police are now taking a close look at surveillance tape from several stores. so far there have been no arrests. a solemn ceremony. how chp officers killed in the line of duty will be remembered this morning. plus a special job for man's best friend. how dogs will help out some local college students this week.

cal osha will visit a redwood city asphalt plant today to investigate an explosion and fire that prompted a shelter in place. the explosion happened about 2:30 yesterday afternoon at the granite rock plant just off highway 101. the president of the plant says a tank filled with liquid asphalt exploded sending up a thick plume of heavy black smoke. the shelter in place order was lifted after an hour and a half and no one was hurt. today the california highway patrol will honor officers killed in the line of duty. the special ceremony at the chp academy in sacramento will include a 21 gun salute and the reading of the names of the 221 chp officers killed since the department's creation in 1929. in 2010 five chp officers were killed in the line of duty. all right. it's coming up on 5:00. want to go back over to sal. anything you're keeping an eye on in particular, sal? we have an accident, pam, on 880 westbound at solano avenue. it was an overturned van on its

roof. they're still clearing it. and eastbound traffic is getting a good look at it. so people who are driving eastbound will also be slow in this area. again, it's west 80 at solano avenue. it's really the only crash we have going on right now. and chp is still on the scene with it. so give yourself plenty of time. i also have one of the right lanes closed and doing a round robin in the area. westbound bay bridge that traffic is light so far coming in to san francisco at this early hour. it's not unusual for it to be so light. and this morning if you are driving on interstate 880 the traffic moves well in both directions. 4:54. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. very good morning. we have patchy fog mainly on the marin coast, san francisco, san mateo. but it is going north to south. patchy morning fog, sunny, breezy and little warmer today. mainly tomorrow's the big day we'll see more of a north wind and north-northeast sunny and warmer. upper 80s inland. maybe close to 90 but the weekend we're going to go like this and drop it right back down the weekend looks much cooler. a lot of clouds and a

possibility of some rain. i put the question mark in there because there's a hint on one forecast model. the others are like we'll just cool down. we'll see. but there will be a change for the weekend. the change that's looming and lurking will be sunshine and warmer weather even though we have patchy fog out there right now. 40 just changed santa rosa 43, 46 napa. low 50s or upper 40s here. san francisco 49. livermore 49. 51 san jose. fairfield 50. there is a good sea breeze here. hasn't turned northerly yet or even northwesterly. mainly west or southwest. so from the golden gate and sfo all the way over san pablo bay into the delta we have a delta breeze or sea breeze. we need that it turn around or go more northerly. you can see high pressure is building in right there as indicated and that wind will start to turn and that will give us a warm up later on. the temperature forecast we go from 40s and 50s and then by 9:00 we'll start to see some 60s. then by noon 70s to near 80 degrees later on as that temperature trends starts to work its way up.

we'll have a good spread here between 60s and upper 60s low 70s by the coast. some low 80s inland. and we'll continue that theme for pleasanton, livermore, morgan hill to gill roy, san jose, but 60s, 70s on the coast. mountain view 78. redwood city 76. sunny but breezy. patchy a.m. fog. warm inland. highs today will start to warm up and then really warm up on wednesday into thursday start to ease up a little bit on friday and then a big cool down saturday taking us into the weekend. all right. thank you, steve. well, a stretch of highway 1 through big sur will be closed for another month as crews continue to work on clearing a landslide. this latest slide is just one of several blocking parts of highway 1. it's at alder creek about 38 miles south of big sur. some promising news about the state's water supply. the fifth and final measurement was taken yesterday. the snow pack stands at 144% of average. that signals the wettest winter

and spring since 1995. the california department of water resources says the drought declared by former governor schwarzenegger is now officially over. well, the university of san francisco law school hopes to help stressed out students by allowing an unusual lending program. students will be allowed to check out a therapy dog during final exams. the dogs will be available in ten minute sessions to play, watch tv or just hang out with the students. san francisco spca is helping with the program. research shows people under stress have lower blood pressure and heart rates after spending time with a dog. well, driving and riding is going to cost you more. what will be decided today at a big muni meeting. and details continue to surface in the death of osama bin laden. the key break that led special forces to his doorstep.
