the right tool to use. >> reporter: and tonight the we learned that the compound where osama bin laden lived with a tourist attraction. >> reporter: some pakistani officials say the million dollar complex might be torn down. for now it was sealed and padlocked. pakistani police keeping guard. but where were they since the compound was built six years ago. some security experts say perhaps to house the world's most wanted terrorist. neighbors now say people in expensive cars sometimes arrived late at night causing neighbors to think drug dealers, smugglers or gold merchants might have lived in the walled compound. but as this broken clock shows, time and speculation stopped here at 2:20 a.m. pakistani time yesterday morning. that's when u.s. officials say, navy seals helicoptered in and

channel 2 news. the white house today released new details on the photographs taken of osama bin laden's body. u.s. officials say there are three sets of pictures. some were taken when the navy brought osama bin laden's body back to afghanistan. they are described as graphic and bloody. another was taken at the compound and were of him and his brothers and son. for now the white house is keeping the photos under wraps. they are still trying to decide whether to release any of them. >> it's fair to say that it's a gruesome photograph. it is certainly possible that, and this is an issue that we are taking into consideration is that it could be inflammatory. >> hoaxes related with osama bin laden's death is making their way around the internet. there's a photo that says it's a photo of osama bin laden

pictures live at noon. protesters conveyed as a meeting was going on inside. protesters say wells fargo and other banks illegally forclosed on families. >> we have families that are fighting each day to put food on their table. they don't have to do this. they can work with people, modify loans and keep people in their homes but they rather forclose. >> reporter: some protesters even bought chairs inside the bank meeting so that they could protest inside. wells fargo says it prevents foreclosures in seven out of 10 of those cases. trading was flat while some stocks lost ground for a second day in a row. there were mixed results throughout the day as corporate earnings and a drop in the price of oil weighed on the market. the dow finished the day flat

a chain reaction crash caused slow downs. it happened at 12:30. it all began when a toyota rav4 crossed into oncoming traffic and sideswiped a vehicle. the crash blocked all southbound lanes and one in the

the bay area's 20th annual spare the air campaign is now under way. it'll last through september. the program asks bay area residents to car pool, take mass transit or bike to improve the air quality. the air district will make announcements on the days that are particularly smoggy. it's all part of the effort to make pipelines safer -- pg & e is conducting a pressure test on the gas pipeline in mountain view. it runs under business and homes. today crews vented gas from that pipeline. next week they will push

through pressurized water. >> in the water test we're going to increase pressure to levels larger or way higher than what they operate at with different gas. we're trying to get a significant margin of safety when we run it with natural gas. >> reporter: pg & e stepped up its pipeline testing after its deadly explore and fire last september. crews will test 150 miles of pipeline in the bay area. for more details on the pg & e pressure testing and to see video explaining the process visit our website ktvu.com. sails of american made cars continue to go up -- sales of american made cars continue to go up. sales grew 27% in april. the company says it sold 22,000 cars last month. gm says sales improved as rising gas prices pushed buyers toward more fuel efficient cars. sales of the chevrolet cruze

led the way. sales were also strong for the chevrolet equinox and terrain. new york city's famous taxi fleet is getting a make over. the city has selected nissan to select its fleet of cabs for the next ten years. the japanese car maker beat out ford and a turkish auto maker. the new nissan taxi cabs are expected to hit the streets near the end of 2013. that helicopter is the same type used in the raid on the osama bin laden compound. we'll take you for a look inside with the pilot of a black hawk. and a big admission. what pg & e says can happen when it comes to their smart meters.

bing bin's death has renewed the debate of when and how to remove troops. first we have breaking news. police are currently searching for the driver of a stolen car that slammed into another car during a police chase. the chase was short, it ended about 10 minutes later when the stolen car hit another car in the intersection of 84th and rugsdale in oakland: here are pictures from the vicinity. the person driving the stolen car ran off after the accident, and we're told police think he maybe hiding some where in a

backyard around that neighborhood. as for the other car, we know two ambulances were called to the scene. we are working to get more information on the condition of the person or people inside that car. congresswoman lynne wolvie called on president obama to step up the troops in afghanistan. more than 200,000 troops are still fighting in that country. now that the leader of al-qaida should be killed, there is even more reasons to get the troops out. >> osama bin laden's death won't bring jim mclaughland back. nor will it bring back the 1,500 plus americans who have lost their lives in afghanistan. the horror of this war continues unabated. >> reporter: however the white house said today the president still plans to begin pulling troops out of afghanistan in

july. july 2011 2011 transition day for the beginning of a draw down remains in place. the place of that draw down will be determined by conditions on the ground. u.s. officials say troops are still needed to get terrorists to draw down in afghanistan. as ktvu's ken pritchett tells us now, there are key differences between blackhawks and the blackhawks used in the osama bin laden mission. >> reporter: i talked to a black hawk pilot today with the california army national guard about the aircraft and how it's similar and different than the one used in the taking of osama bin laden. >> reporter: the black hawk that carried the navy seals looked much like this one. but souped up for the special forces. >> this thing can take a beating. the saying is if you land it greasy side down you're going

to survive a hard landing and i can attest to that. >> reporter: ryan bronley says it took heavily seasoned pilots to pull off the raid in the urban area. >> it's pretty amazing. understanding where they flew from and the distance that they went through to do the mission. >> reporter: he showed us a black hawk used to carry wounded from the battlefield. >> where he are not allowed to carry any type of weapons. >> reporter: he says the blackhawks used by special forces is more up to date with all glass cockpits. the seats were likely stripped from the aircraft. the similarities. >> you have armour that would actually fly forward. >> reporter: the helicopter has infrared to see in the dark. broccoli says the hardware aside it was training and experience that accomplished an incredible end result. >> i think as a soldier, i

think it's a sense of pride. >> reporter: one of the blackhawks did crash in the raid, it was later destroyed by special forces. broccoli credits the experience of the special forces pilots for no one being injured in that crash. at mayter field, ken pritchett. an interesting side note now to the hunt for osama bin laden. two years ago a team of geographers and students from ucla tried to figure out where osama bin laden might be hiding. they were pretty close. they used satellite picture and other determinations and determined that osama bin laden was not hiding in the hills. they said they believed he was hiding in a walled compound. in a pakistani city although the city they picked was about 300 miles from where osama bin laden was found. the mission to bring down osama bin laden is having a side effect for the navy seals. the foundation that provides

financial help saw a 60% surge in donations yesterday. the navy seal foundation received $6,000 on monday alone. there are some days when the group receives no donations. many of the donations came with notes thanking the seals for their service. the foundation provides help including paying for funerals, moral services and scholarships for the children of navy seals. we found today that some people are already making a profit from osama bin laden's death. coming up at 6:00, a look at what many consider the morbid new product popping up in the online marketplace including some from a bay area company. now as always we continue our coverage on our website ktvu.com. look for the special osama bin laden section on our home page. it includes demonstrations of osama bin laden's compound. and as new information comes in, we are updating that

section constantly. and pg & e is making -- >> reporter: pg & e discovered the problem, and yesterday they announced it. the meters overcharged customers an average of $40. pg & e plans to give those customers a refund. and offer customers a free inhome energy audit. some customers that didn't get overcharged are nonetheless suspicious of the new meters. >> my wife picks up the bill and paying them and she's not too excited about the cost. >> anything that pg & e can offer the consumer to save money is a benefit. >> reporter: eight counties and 31 cities in california have written official expressions of

concern. their main worry, health concerns over radiation. marin county and san francisco are among the largest complaint. >> they do have one at my house as well. but with all the flak that i feel, it seems like it wasn't a big win for them at all. >> reporter: pg & e says the smart meters will help customers closely monitor usage and is a plan to modern modernize the system. it everyone discovered the problem that is being corrected by the company right now. >> it has the ability to communicate with us. in a number of issues including when something may be done. >> reporter: with 7.8 million smart meters now installed,pg & e is close to its goal of 8 million system wide. the company that produced the smart meters that failed almost made another 2 million now in the field. a local watchdog group says there's no way to know if those meters won't also overcharge.

a car fire this morning in the east bay caused tense moments for drivers and emergency groups. the car caught fire on 580 in dublin. the chp shut down the freeway because the driver had a gun and ammunition from the car. heat from the fire caused some

of the bullets to go off. the highway patrol says no one was hit by none of the bullets. the high speed rail authority is considering a cost cutting plan. the trains would run mush slower. instead of building two new tracks, existing caltrain tracks would be electrified and retooled so the new high speed rail trains could share them with caltrain. the mercury news says that would cost $1.5 billion compare that to building new rails on the peninsula for high speed rail trains which could cost at least $6 billion. commuters will be getting a free ticket to ride on the commuter express this afternoon. on friday only there will be no charge for fairs on the ace train running between stockton and san jose. officials say it's the fairway's thanking customers. and friday commemorates the

special report on what went wrong and perhaps how you can fix it. >> reporter: this may be the way you imagined your retirement. that's you on a big fast boat some where sunny. this may be the retirement you fear if you aren't taking care of the business of your future. working a recycling center in a shopping center parking lot. there's a huge sliding scale between the two extremes. but new data from the federal reserve bank analyzed by the center for retirement research finds the scale may be sliding more toward the empty bottles and cans than the full ones. >> everyone the more responsible people who actually did save and contributed to their 401k are having trouble making ends meet now. >> reporter: bob goldman is a financial planner based in marin county. >> over the last 40 years, stocks have returned eight to 9%. but that doesn't mean it's going to be 89% in the year that you need your money.

>> reporter: the retirement research center bases its conclusion on a presumption that you need 85% of your work income at retirement to keep living at the standard you live now. but as the first baby boomers start retiring, researchers are finding as much as 92% of middle class americans are not hitting their target. for people living here, the situation may be compounded. >> we live in a very expensive area. the bay area is expensive and if you grew up saving for retirement in ohio, and now you need to retire in california, well you have a problem. >> reporter: experts say the problem begins with people putting in too little money into their retirement account, 9% is common. 15% should be the target amount say analysts. stock marketty market disasters especially the one we experienced is another major
