the middle of the week. good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. here's steve. thank you very much, pam and dave. very good morning to you all. skies are clear. no fog on the coast. that's for sure. so temperatures there will start off in the 50s. end up in the 70s to upper 70s and some 80s especially santa cruz. around the bay mid-80s and upper 80s for many today as temperatures will be warm. but will we be setting any records? we'll look at that and look at the weekend in five minutes. here's sal. steve, right now traffic on interstate 80 looks pretty good. getting more crowded as you drive by golden gate field racetrack and head to berkeley. also this morning you can see traffic on the upper deck of the bay bridge looks good. there's a bit of a back up building at the toll plaza. it's 6:01 let's get back to the news desk. this just in. there are indications that osama bin laden was prepared to flee his compound at a moment's notice. according to top u.s. intelligence officials, bin laden had the equivalent of

about $740 on him when he was killed. he also had two telephone numbers sown into his clothing. reportedly c.i.a. director says bin laden apparently believed that he would be alerted by his network before any attack against him. well, debate continues within the obama administration on whether or not to release photographs of osama bin laden's body. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong is in san francisco this morning. she's getting reaction from people here in the bay area. claudine. >> reporter: well, reaction is mixed, pam, about whether or not people think these photos should be released. and there's new doubts this morning on whether or not we'll see one. c.i.a. director was quoted as it was likely going to happen. most people thought it wasn't a matter of if but when. but this morning there are new reports that the white house is questioning whether or not any good would come from releasing these photos. and it looks like maybe now they're leaning to not releasing any photos. the white house reportedly has what are being described as gruesome photos of bin laden's

body. there are reportedly three sets of photographs taken of his body at a hanger in afghanistan. the images are of his face apparently with a massive open head wound across both eyes. we asked people this morning here in san francisco if they think the photos should be released. >> yeah. >> reporter: why? >> make sure it was him. >> reporter: do you have doubts? >> somewhat. >> i don't think i would rather see them released. you don't want to see that picture even if it is osama bin laden. but official reasons probably a good idea on the grounds that somebody should be able to confirm it. >> reporter: so why the apparent new hesitation this morning? well, the question that has been repeatedly asked is would there be a benefit from releasing the photos? obviously there are concerns about retaliation and now that we know that bin laden's wife survived this attack and can apparently confirm it was him there are apparently fewer reasons why the white house thinks that good would come

from releasing the photos. they say bin laden's wife should appease critics or conspiracy theorists who think this might not have happened. we are putting calls into washington d.c. to senator feinstein's office and other politicians from the bay area to see if they're going to weigh in on this debate. we're doing to continue to talk to people in san francisco and keep you updated all morning long. live in san francisco, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. the government of pakistan calls the death of osama bin laden an important milestone in the fight against terrorism. but pakistan is not happy about how the united states carried out the mission. pakistan released a statement making it clear it had no advanced knowledge of the u.s. attack on bin laden's compound. now that statement says the pakistan government has "deep concerns because the united states carried out the operation without prioritization from the government of pakistan." the killing of osama bin laden has led to fears of retaliatory attack on maas transit systems here in the u.s. coming up for

you at 6:15 we'll bring you a live report from washington about a hearing this morning investigating whether response plans are in place in case of an attack. a parolee is behind bars in the east bay this morning. he's accused of opening fire on a veteran police officer in pittsburg. the gunfire shattered the glass of the officer's patrol car. remarkably the officer was not hurt. now investigators are still on the scene. we have live pictures now of that scene. police say the trouble began when officers tried to stop the driver for running a stop sign. officers then chased that car for several blocks to a nearby strip mall where the suspect got out of his car. >> he immediately turned, faced the officer's vehicle and opened fire on the officer as the officer still sat in his car. our officer was able to pull out his gun and return fire. >> police say the gunman then ran to a nearby home. hours later 27-year-old jones

came out with his hands up. his surrender followed a tense standoff that lasted several hours. jones now faces several felony charges including attempted murder. we're going to have a live update from pittsburg coming up at 6:30. time now 6:05. oakland police searching for a gunman blamed for an overnight shooting inside a residential hotel. the gunfire forced the evacuation of the building on harrison street. police say the gunman opened fire inside of a hallway after a heated argument with the building manager. those bullets came dangerously close to the manager and another man, but neither was hit. the gunman then hid inside one of the rooms. police ordered everybody out of the building as they went door to door searching for him. >> security sweep for everyone's safety. while we were doing that we recovered the firearm in the grass outside. >> we just checked in with oakland police a short time ago. they tell us that gunman is still on the loose. a violent home invasion in san mateo has left neighbors on

edge. it happened near the hillsdale shopping center. ktvu's kraig debro is out there this morning with what police are saying about the suspects who attacked an older woman. kraig. >> reporter: pam, they said two men entered the home in the middle of the day, beat this woman and then burglarized her home. it happened here in the 400 block of portola in the middle of the day. i talked to some neighbors this morning. a lot of people walking, walking their dogs getting exercise. most people know about it. the one person i talked to who didn't expressed shock. around 1:30 two men knocked on the home of the woman. they went around the back and got in through the sliding back door. the woman then confronted the suspects and they quickly overpowered her and forced her to sit down. that's when they beat her and got off with her jewelry. san mateo county's sheriff's assisted but they did not catch the suspects. they developed a composite

sketch of two of the three men. the two men who entered home described as hispanic men in their 30s one wore a yellow hard hat. maybe an indication they planned to pose as construction workers. that not yet confirmed. the other dry described being thin build and wearing a thin goatee or mustache. continue to talk to neighbors and find out where this home is and see if we can talk to the victim. live in san mateo. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco's budget crisis is expected to get a whole lot worse in the years ahead. mayor ed lee's office just completed an in depth study looking at the city's financial future over the next five years. it concludes that spending will continue to far outpace revenue causing the city's soaring budget deficit to triple by the year 2016. that same report says the city must drastically reduce costs and raise a lot of money mostly through taxes. san francisco police may soon feel the pain of the

city's budget crisis. officers are due nearly $15 million in raises starting july 1st. but today's chronicle says mayor lee is asking police to take a pay cut this summer and in the years ahead. the mayor says that's the only way the city can avoid having fewer officers on the street, the the police union is expected to fight the pay cut plan. time now 6:08. major budget cuts just approved by the contra costa county supervisors and reportedly public safety will take a big hit. they approved almost $50 million in cuts. under this new budget the district attorney's office would lose a dozen positions. the d.a. says they'd be forced to seek misdemeanor charges instead of felony charges for sex offenders who fail to register and for domestic violence cases. reportedly up to 40 sheriff deputies positions will be eliminated. 6:09 is the time right now. back over to sal to check in on traffic. all right. right now, pam and dave,

welcome back. this morning the house homeland security committee will hold a hearing about security on trains and buses. ktvu's allison burns reports from our washington d.c. newsroom. there's new urgency that the killing of osama bin laden will lead to retaliation. allison. >> reporter: that's right. the head of the transportation security administration has said that terrorists consider mass transit an easier target than more heavily fortified airplanes and airports. this week bomb sniffing dogs and extra police are on alert for any signs of retaliatory attacks after the death of bin laden. and this morning the house homeland security committee examines whether passengers are protected on trains and buses. attorney general eric holder testified yesterday about the threat of revenge attacks against the u.s. >> we cannot become complacent. the fight is far from over. just yesterday i ordered the department's prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to be

mindful bin laden's death could result in retaliatory attacks. >> reporter: after the 9/11 attacks technology was deployed across the country to screen passengers at mass transit stations but there were concerns it slowed down commuters. finding a way to make mass transit less vulnerable has been a huge challenge. the head of security for bart will be here testifying about it this morning. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. well, three years ago the u.s. ambassador to japan sent a classified cable to washington expressing concern about japan's capabilities to respond to a major disaster. that's according to wikileaks documents obtained by the new york times. now in the cable the ambassador said government bureaucracy could make it difficult for japan to quickly respond to a disaster. japan has been criticized for a lack of preparedness in dealing with the tsunami earlier this year that set off the worst

nuclear disaster since chernobyl. we're learning five miners are dead after an explosion in a mine in mexico. yesterday morning 14 men became trapped and so far rescue crews have recovered five bodies. and there's little hope that the remaining nine men are still alive. the mine is located outside the in the heart of mexico's mining district. the city's mayor says the explosion trapped the men in a mine shaft deep underground. time now 6:18. firefighters have contained that brush fire burning on catalina island. crews used helicopters and that put out some of the hot spots there. the fire started monday and burned 120 acres. no buildings were burned. no one's been hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. well, today's forecast of hot weather that steve's been telling you about combined with all the rain we had last winter could be a hint of the kind of fire danger we're going to face

this summer. a lot of homeowners have already cleared dry grass off their properties. which would make it easier for fire crews in case they've got to put out any flames. firefighters say more than ever this year property owners you have to take preventive action since there are fewer firefighters because of state and local budget cut backs. >> we are seeing somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 25% potential decrease in available local government resources to move up and down the state. >> our staffing on our fire engines will be three firefighters instead of four. >> cal fire says it's made those cuts so it can keep open all of its fire stations around the state. well, more and more california schools are turning to cities to get help as they try to stay afloat during the state budget crisis. you can now add the mt. diablo school district to that list. it may ask the cities to raise sales taxes to help out the financially troubled district schools. those cities include clayton, concord, pleasant hill and parts of martinez, pittsburg

few upper 80s. sunshine today and tomorrow and then a little cooler on friday. looks like a big cool down as we go into the weekend especially on sunday. pam and dave. wal-mart is investing heavily in one country this year as a way to boost its global profits. the world's largest retailer plans to spend $755 million to expand its operations in brazil before the end of december. the money will be used to build 80 new stores and renovate the 177 it already has. wal-mart is one of brazil's largest retailers. this is interesting. new york taxis will have a new look starting in 2013. the new cabs will be based on a nissan van. they'll include a mobile charging station, usb outlets and what's called -- i love this -- a low annoyance horn to encourage pedestrians to speed up a little bit. it will also have windows in the roof so passengers can enjoy a different view of the new york skyline. nissan beat ford and a turkish car maker for the ten year contract. looks good.

react. get you those numbers in just a moment. we'll smile and say good morning to you. welcome to the ktvu morning news wednesday may 4th. i'm dave clark. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. investigators at the scene of a frightening incident that happened in the east bay. a parolee is in jail accused of firing shots at a veteran police officer. ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live now from pittsburgh pittsburg to tell us about the shooting and arrest. >> reporter: dave, that car is the suspect's car and it remains in the parking lot where it ended up yesterday evening. this is a routine traffic stop in pittsburg. but then a dramatic shootout, man hunt and arrest for some who were just out shopping it was all too much. >> when i got off the bus i just seen two brothers run across the street. that's all i know. >> reporter: news chopper 2 shows us the scene after shots rang out around 5:30 yesterday evening. a pittsburg police officer on routine patrol noticed a car

roll through a stop sign. instead of pulling over the suspect sped off forcing the officer into a short chase. but the suspect driving wasn't about to give up there. he got out, pulled out a gun and opened fire on the officer still sitting in his patrol car. the officer, a 13 year veteran of the force, returned fire but the suspect managed to get past the boulevard and maudlin street until hours later 27- year-old jones was tracked to a fourplex. the home of an acquaintance. police arrested jones who was shot in the leg. the officer involved in the shootout walked away with minor cuts from shattered windshield. eight bullets pierced the glass. one bullet came dangerously close to his head. >> you hope that an officer will go through his entire career never facing a situation like this. our officer did face this situation and through his tenacity, through his training, experience, he was able to come through it. >> reporter: the man you're looking at was the acquaintance of the suspect. no word on whether he'll be charged. jones the 27-year-old arrested

about concerns about retaliation and now that we know bin laden's wife was in this compound and there are other ways for the government to confirm that in fact this was osama bin laden's body the question is whether it would do more good than harm if they are released. that debate still continues. we've been talking to senator feinstein's office this morning as well as george miller's office. we're trying to get them to weigh in on all of this. we're doing to continue to talk to folks in san francisco and keep you updated on this storm warning all morning long. live in san francisco, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:46. president george w. bush will not join president obama when he goes to ground zero tomorrow. he declined the invitation saying he appreciates the offer but wants to avoid the spotlight. he will meet with family members during his new york visit. some members of congress are calling for a faster pace of withdrawal of u.s. troops from afghanistan now that osama bin laden is dead.

more than 100,000 u.s. troops are currently in afghanistan. in a hearing on capitol hill yesterday some senators argue that it's time for american forces to come home. but the white house says the u.s. troop withdrawal will proceed as scheduled which begins in july. fairfield's travis air force base is increasing security following the death of bin laden. the most noticeable change will be seen right at the front gate. guards are doing a more thorough check of people entering the base. they are also increasing random vehicle searches. time now 6:37. back here at home preliminary results of a special election are in. it appears some bay area school districts will get help from property owners. voters approved parcel tax measures for four school districts. two measures in alameda county failed to get two-thirds of the vote needed. but in contra costa county one of two parcel tax proposals passed. san mateo county voters approved two of three measures.

san mateo union high school board member dave pine beat out five other candidates and won a seat on the county board of supervisors. he got 27% of the vote. this is the first time that voters in san mateo county filled a board of supervisor's position through an all mail-in election. san mateo county estimates they saved half a million dollars on the vote by mail election. there's no need to set up neighborhood polling stations or hire thousands of poll workers. ballots were mailed out last month to registered voters. and voter turn out in san mateo county was 24%. a big step in the rebuilding of san bruno. the city reportedly issued its first permit this week to rebuild a home that was destroyed in that pipeline explosion back in september. the blast destroyed a total of 38 homes. owners of 21 of those homes also plan to rebuild and move back. construction on the first home is expected to start next month. pg&e is accusing state

regulators of making it difficult for the utility to track spending related to the san bruno pipeline explosion. and any planned upgrades. now tracking expenses is something pg&e would be required to do if it is eventually allowed to pass along any of those costs to customers. the california public utilities commission may vote on the issue tomorrow. time now 6:38. hey, sal, did they fix the problems with bart? yeah, they just cleared them up. had some earlier delays. you may have heard about them but i just got off the phone with bart and they say all trains are back on time. 56 trains are now running on the system without delays. you might get out there and not eastbound notice anything's wrong. that's good. go out and take a look at highway 4 westbound traffic is getting busier coming up to the willow pass grade. also if you are driving on any of bay area brings it looks pretty good despite some delays at some of these toll plazas. the bay bridge we'll show it to you next time. right now the sun is glaring out the camera, but the bay

welcome back. time now 6:44. quick look at some of the top stories we're following right now. we're continuing to follow the latest white house report about osama bin laden and reports that when the u.s. navy seals stormed his compound in pakistan he may not have had a gun at the time when he was killed. more information from the white house will be coming later. a parolee is behind bars in the east bay this morning accused of opening fire on a veteran police officer in pittsburg. that gunfire shattered the glass of the officer's patrol car remarkably that officer was not hurt. and san francisco's budget crisis is expected to get a whole lot worse in the years ahead. mayor ed lee's office just finished an in depth study looking at the city's financial future over the next five years. it found the city's budget deficit may triple by the year 2016. a san mateo community is on edge this morning following a

violent home invasion. just a short timing a ktvu's kraig debro talked with a next door neighbor who is now worried about his own wife's safety. kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. in fact she just left the home right before this happened. we've spoken to several other neighbors about the terrifying ordeal experienced by this 80- year-old woman on monday. one that people we spoke to again lives next door to the victim. his wife just spoke to her minutes before the attack. it happened at this home in san mateo around 1:30 monday afternoon. middle of the day. police say three men were involved. two men including one in a yellow hard hat knocked on the door. when they got no answer the two men went around the back and let themselves in the home through a sliding door. the victim was home and may have surprised the men when she confronted them. police say the men made the woman sit down and then beat her. >> she's alone. she's widowed. she's been alone for a while. i mean that's terrible. you don't do that body. it's just awful. >> reporter: police say the men

took jewelry and then ran outside and hopped into a waiting light green suv. san mateo police and san mateo county sheriff deputies combed the area looking for the vehicle and the men who fit the description but found nothing. they were able however to come together with a sketch of the suspects. two of the men described as hispanic and in their 30s. one wearing a yellow hard hat. one with a thin build. the one with the hard hat describing as having a medium build. we're hoping to speak to other neighbors this morning. one of the questions we want to ask is whether or not they saw any men in the neighborhood prior to this perhaps casing the neighborhood in preparation for what happened on monday. reporting live in san mateo, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:47. pleasant hill police say a man wearing san jose sharks gear robbed a bank. it happened at the pacific service credit union on contra costa boulevard shortly after 2:00 p.m. yesterday. police say the man walked in, demanded cash and threatened the bank teller. that teller handed over cash

and the man ran off. police say he was wearing a black number 19 sharks jersey and a black sharks hat. he's described as being in his 40s or 50s. he was african-american about 5'10" with a slim build. later this morning defense attorneys will begin calling their witnesses in the chauncey bailey murder trial. the prosecution rested its case yesterday against yusuf bey iv and macaque. they're charged with murdering bailey and two other men. closing arguments could begin as soon as next week. time now 6:48. well, hundreds of drunk driving cases may now be dropped in the south bay. all because of a problem with a police breathalyzer machine. the problem is with this device you're seeing on the screen now. san jose police say they've stopped using it because the tests may not be reliable. now according to the mercury news the santa clara d.a.'s office is reviewing about 900 dui cases.

northeasterly breeze. widespread 80s. coast will be beautiful today. windy in the hills maybe out to the valley as well. 70s, 80s, mid to upper 80s and temperatures should settle in there. not in record setting territory but they'll be above average. about the same thursday then looks like a cool down friday and a significant cool down into the weekend. well, shoppers spent more on clothing in april but less on other items. the latest mastercard spending poll report that was released this morning shows sales of clothes were up 10% last month. men's clothing sold especially well. analysts say ladies helped push up the sales of suits and shoes but consumers spent most on other items and analysts say it's probably because we're spending more on higher gas prices so we have less to spend elsewhere. check in on the numbers on wall street. let me pull them up here for you because we don't have them on your screen. they are actually down a little bit. the dow jones off about 23 points. nasdaq up though. we have some mixed jobs reports numbers coming in that we've

welcome back. b.p. ordered to pay $25 million in fines not for the gulf oil spill but for two spills from its pipelines in alaska in 2006. now it's the largest per barrel fine against an oil company in a spill case. and this just sets the stage

for what federal prosecutors can expect when they go after b.p. for the much larger spill in the gulf of mexico. a fairfield high school swim coach has been arrested on charges of having sex with a 16- year-old student. 20-year-old jonathan taken into custody last week when police learned about the alleged affair. they say the girl was just 15 when the relationship began. members of the swim team describe him as a great guy and they say they're shocked about his arrest. fairfield police now want to know if there are any other victims. an incident involving a first grader and a loaded gun is being investigated in oakland this morning. now police were called to prescott elementary school yesterday morning. a little child brought a gun to school. the school district says a teacher found the gun as the child was taking items out of his backpack. the child denies knowing about the gun. still not clear how the gun ended up there or who it belongs to. tonight the final five "american idol" contestants take the stage.
