union square. ktvu's david stevenson is there with what led to the arrests. and word that other arrests are expected. >> reporter: julia, last week when we met with the widower of the german tourist and the district attorney, they both said they expected an arrest soon. tonight, investigators told us the arrests came at 7:00 this morning in 3 bay area cities, there are seven suspects, five adults and two juveniles who are described as gang members, then taken into custody by police officers and gang task force members. they are wanted in the killing of the teacher who was caught in the cross fire of a gang shootout in union square. several arrests were made immediately after the shooting, thanks to witnesses. but the district attorney didn't file charges, homicide investigators this evening said that that forced them to beef up their case over the last four months. >> we made the arrests
6:01 pm
initially based on the information we had. the district attorney's office, we worked with them in determining that further investigative -- things were needed to be done. we -- we did them. >> one warrant was served in fremont, california, with the help of the fremont police department. one warrant was served in oakland. five warrants were served here in san francisco. there was still one suspect outstanding. >> reporter: now four face multiple charges, arraignments are scheduled tomorrow. homicide investigators say when they notified the husband of the slain woman, he was very emotional when they talked to him this morning. reporting live, san francisco, david stevenson, channel 2 action news. and more on the breaking news, a fire that is burning in the south of market area in san francisco. we have news chopper 2 on the scene now. you can see this building is really involved now. this fire, it has gone to a
6:02 pm
third alarm. this is burning at rush and folsom, in between 6th and 7th. this is an area that is used heavily during the evening commute, and from what we understand this is really impacting traffic. it also looks like in the past few minutes this fire has really increased. and again we mentioned just moments ago it has now gone from two alarms to three alarms. we are still working to figure out exactly what type of building this is, but again it is in the south of market area, folsom and rush. so stay away from that area if you are preparing to head home towards the evening commute. again, folsom is a key road that is used for folks heading up to the bay bridge. >> and you are looking at live pictures just as we see what happened now. we're watching it, about 15 minutes ago in the news room you could see a lot of smoke coming out of the building. you really couldn't see the flames, but news chopper 2 is here now, you can really get a
6:03 pm
good look at the smoke and the ladders going up to the building there with the flames just bursting out of the building. again this is a three-alarm fire burning at russ and folsom in the south of market area, three alarms, probably will impact traffic in the area there in san francisco right now. >> and let's see, perhaps the pilot here on news chopper 2 is zooming in right now. you can see the firefighters there on the roof. i don't know if he can hear me right now. but is there a way to pan out to see the traffic on folsom? okay, maybe you can't hear me right now, but again you can see the building really fully involved right now. it is going from a second to a third alarm, definitely impacting the evening commute. this is right in the heart of the south of market area, between 6th and 7th. okay, now he is pan -- >> you can see the wider view, people in the news room making calls to see exactly what type of building this is, and if it is a commercial building, looks
6:04 pm
more commercial than residential. you can see there to the side there between 6 and 7th, close to the freeway, the people are actually seeing a lot of smoke coming out from this fire. again this is a live picture from san francisco. this fire moved to three alarms, a lot of anxious moments as firefighters knocked down the flames burning in the south of market area there. >> and actually this could impact the traffic on the freeway. normally it -- that is 101, heading to the bridge. normally it would be backed up, but is slowing down even a little bit more because of people looking at all of the smoke, which can easily be seen again. we're getting reports that at least one person may have been injured. we also understand that this is -- a residential area. but we don't know specifically if this is -- an apartment complex. let's see what we can see as we zoom in here. you can see the fire, certainly it looks like it is getting
6:05 pm
worse. >> it could be residential. if you look on the front side of it. it is a three-story residential building here. you can see the windows and the whole top of it there, fully hit with flames. they are attacking it from several sides. you can see the water hoses, this will be a big fight for firefighters here at the top, hit with flames. >> it is also very hot outside. i don't think the weather, though, is impacting this fire that much. i was just talking to our chief meteorologist -- >> actually i just talked to our chief meteorologist, asking him about the weather. because it was a warm day in the city. right now he says in the area it is probably in the low-to- mid 70s. so not really, really hot. but a warm day, only in the low- to-mid 70s. >> and not real windy and well, which does help a little bit here. but again, now three alarms. and they're doing their best, but it doesn't appear that they're making that much
6:06 pm
progress just yet. the building is really -- really burning right now. >> we are working to get a crew, a live report coming up as fast as we can. we're working to get a crew in the area. but again if you're just joining us, the three alarm fire near russ and folsom, in the south market area. we'll talk to bill martin right now, outside chief meteorologist, for what he can tell us -- >> and of course the temperatures in the city today, upper 70s, low 80s, so a very, very warm day, we'll see if we can pick up wind readings, we have a west wind at 13, bringing the moisture flow, higher humidities into the -- into the bay area. but in san francisco proper now, let's switch over to the wind direction, we're looking at winds basically that -- they're out of the north- northeast. and those winds of course are a little bit warmer, a wind direction here, west at 21, that is at san francisco. west at 21, so that is pretty
6:07 pm
good news. what i am getting at here, when you bring wind off the water, you are increasing the humidity. today is a very dry day. we talked about this, with record high temperatures in oakland. the reason is, i'll back it out. the air was coming like this, i mentioned this earlier. the air was coming offshore like this. that is a very high fire danger type of pattern when we get into the summer months. that is occurring today. right now you can see at oakland too. west-northwest at 14. so the winds are coming from a direction -- they are not howling, at 70 miles per hour, they're at 15-20 miles per hour out of the west. so yeah, frank and julia, it is a better situation than it could be, when it was earlier today, where the winds were north-northeast. and i don't know if we can pull out on that or not, if you think about the plume and where the smoke is blowing to.
6:08 pm
most likely it is out into the bay. i'm not sure what it is burning, we don't know about the atmosphere, but the winds out of the west, good news. >> and it certainly looks like they're making progress now. a couple of minutes ago the building was fully involved. you can see a little more white smoke there, always a good sign when a fire is burning. the -- it means the fire is starting to be put out. we don't see any of those flames shooting through the roof. as many of them shooting through the roof as we did a couple of minutes ago. >> looks like they're making progress. this is near the russ and folsom area, south of market between 6th and 7th in that area. it is a three-story residential building. looks like firefighters, there is a lot of white smoke at the beginning of this news cast. there is a lot of black smoke and flames. and it looks like much more smoke now than flames. that is a very good sign. >> and as i look, knowing the location, that is a westerly wind. that is a moisture, higher
6:09 pm
humidity air mass that helps firefighters a lot as well. >> and also one other thing to keep in mind here, this is happening during the evening commute. this is pretty busy in the area, right in the south of market area. russ and folsom, in between 6th and 7th. so keep that in mind. you can see there is a lot of fire equipment there. it looks like at least a couple of streets in that area are closed off as a result of this. we are going to continue to follow this story's again, a reporter on the way. just ahead, three-alarm fire burning in a residential building in the south of market area. we are on top of this working to get more information. as we do, we'll bring it to you during the course of the news cast. meanwhile, we want to tell you what else is going on today. the white house answered the most pressing questions since usama bin laden's death. will pictures of his body be released. live in oakland, with why the white house said no, and how the decision is being taken. >> reporter: and as for the
6:10 pm
security and the people we spoke to today, the majority said they don't need to see a picture of this man dead. president obama says that usama bin laden is dead. >> he has been a great president so far. if he says he is dead, he is dead, right? >> reporter: but some people want the evidence. >> regardless if it is wrong, people want to see, they want proof. so if the people ask for it, then so be it. kind of like his birth certificate. if they ask for it, why not give it to them. >> reporter: today, president obama gave an interview for 60 minutes some questions were answered. >> question, did you see the pictures? >> the president, yes. >> question, what was your reaction when you saw him? >> the president, it was him. >> reporter: some of the members of the families members who died said that the photos should be released. republican lawmakers said releasing a dead image of usama bin laden could be seen as a trophy and could impact the

u.s. troops working overseas. >> it is not necessary to do so. i think there is plenty of proof that this was usama bin laden. >> reporter: the president's decision to classify the photos of usama bin laden could make the voice stronger of conspiracy theory advocates. >> they will keep it going, the fact is he is dead, there is no incentive to throw it out there, have the whole world look at this dead face. >> reporter: a spokesperson for house minority leader nancy pelosi said that leader nancy pelosi supports the president's decision, as she said the decision on the matter is based on our national security interests. reporting live in san francisco, ktvu channel 2 action news. and u.s. attorney general eric holder says the americans are at risk, even though the top terrorist is dead. >> they need to be mindful that usama bin laden's death could
6:12 pm
cause revenge attacks. >> eric holder says a team of c.i.a., justice department and other intelligence officials are reviewing the evidence collected during the raid on usama bin laden's compound. holder says based on what they find could result in more names being added to the nation's no- fly zone list. and many people consider some areas attempted targets. more on the story with the bart commander. >> reporter: well, we're at the west open bart station, and the evening commute comes in the middle of the heightened security. the police now have a higher profile. at issue is the patrol team, today they monitor the front area, of the trains between downtown oakland and san francisco, the most busy corridor in the system. >> just to know they're here. because i took bart this morning and i didn't see any.

6:14 pm
>> reporter: transit officials tell us they're just not sure how long they will stay on heightened alert. reporting live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 action news. and new details about the raid on usama bin laden's compound are now coming out, including that five people, not the four originally reported, were killed by navy seals. two al-qaeda workers, one unidentified woman, one of usama bin laden's sons and usama bin laden helps himself were all killed. congressional officials say that key evidence was found on his body, with money and telephones sewn into his clothes. the cash is worth about 745 u.s. dollars, they say the cash was probably there in case he needed to take off quickly. one of usama bin laden's daughters say she watched the navy seals shoot and kill her father. the pakistani officials are talking to other people found

6:16 pm
responded. we don't know about evacuations or injuries, we heard possibly one injury, we're trying to confirm that as well with authorities. you're looking at live pictures from news chopper 2. where firefighters are on the roof. the ladders are going up to the side of the building there, spraying water, stopping the flames in the area here of south and market. and one key concern that firefighters would have is keeping the fire from spreading. you can see the buildings are there all close together. that is the last thing you want is this fire to spread and jump from one building to another. also the time of day would be a concern here. a lot of folks may be home or just arriving home from say work, and -- don't know how many people of were inside the building. but obviously if they were in there, they need to get out. because it looks like the fire may have spread to more than just the roof there. but again if there is good news it appears that firefighters have really gotten a handle on at least the bulk of the fire. about 20 minutes ago the entire roof there, flames were
