mornings on 2 starts right now. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. president obama heads to ground zero to take part in a wreath laying ceremony. these are footprints of the world trade center at ground zero. it comes days after the killing of osama bin laden. president obama will meet privately with families of those who died in the september 11th attacks. >> he promised us he would get bin laden. he was a man of his word and i respect that and i personally want to thank him. >> the president is also scheduled to visit a fire house that lost 15 first responders on

9/11. president obama will arrive in new york this morning at 7:40 our time. well, president obama says he decided not to release those photos of osama bin laden's body because he's worried they meet be used as a prop dan da -- propaganda tools by al qaeda. after almost daley claire -- daily clarification was happened. there's mystery about the wreckage of the helicopter left behind at osama bin laden's compound. we'll bring you a live report with what aviation exports are saying about it. >> moments ago, nurses at children's hospital in oakland walked off the job. ktvu's kraig debro joins us to talk about the war of words between the hospital and nurses. >> reporter: seconds ago nurses are just get being out of their

overnight shifts and joining everybody with picket signs. the hospital hired about 125 replacement nurses. possibly 800 could go on strike. these nurses are enthusiastic. they say the issue is healthcare. the hospital is asking them to contribute 15% of the cost of cobra to healthcare plan that they can choose to go anywhere they want. the nurses want to go to children's hospital but the hospital isn't offering them to do that for free. the one plan, keyser, nurses say they want to go to children's. the second plan is catastrophic healthcare. the hospital admits its supplemental. we just spoke to a hospital spokesperson. she made chargings that the union leadership were the ones threatening the nurses to come

out. she said these nurses make enough money that they can afford to pay a contribution. >> to ask nurses whose average hourlily rate is almost $68 an hour to contribute $1.92 is not an unreasonable request in these times. >> they are manipulating the numbers to create a hypothetical nonexistent nurse who works five days a week at that level of pay and that nurse does not exist. >> reporter: there's a heavy level of security out here as there was last year as well, last october when these nurses walked out on strike last october. their contract was up in july. they tried to reach an agreement since then. they obviously didn't get a resolution in october and they're still thinking of a resolution today. it's a five-day strike. the one in october was a

three-day strike. they want to work with the contract. there's also security preens. you can see there's security guard there, and another one. one on the other side of the driveway. there are at least 50 security guards that the hospital has hired for the duration of this five-day walkout. a human skull was found in monterey county by someone who was out picking wild flowers. that led to the discovery of more remains nearby. this happened tuesday near an embankment in carmel valley. also this morning some very private documents are still scattered on the marin county highway and that is raising big concerns about privacy and oat

theft. on friday a highway flipped over spelling medical records and other sensitive papers on to the freeway. it's possible anyone could have grabbed the papers that contain social security numbers. a san rafael man remains in jail accused of using a concealed video camera to peek under women's skirts. police caught 26-year-old nicholas springer in the act at the farmers market. he attached a camera to a shoe and used it to catch video up women's skirts. san francisco's police chief and his command staff are going greefnlt the chief informed his top brass yesterday that the gas guzzling crown victorias and suvs will be traded in for

hybrid vehicles. the gas mileage is expected to help save a lot of money. some big crowds expected tonight in san jose for cinco de mayo. ktvu's tara moriarty -- maureen naylor, i'm sorry. you're down there to tell us how police are getting ready for everything. >> reporter: we're in downtown san jose. there's no official celebration but people do come down. you'll find these no parking signs that have been set up. police are warning if you park here, crore car will be towed. they say every year people still try to park down here. we've seen cars decorated with

the mexican flag. san jose police say there will be something different this year. their department has fewer officers but the numbers should not be noticeable on the street. >> the staffing levels are different. we've experienced a little contraction because of the budget issues. we have made up for those staffing shortages by implementing additional patrol officers. >> reporter: the department as half the your of breathalyzers it normally does because they had to send the devices back to the manufacturer to get the glitch fixed. the department typically as 60 breathalyzers. tonight they will have half the amount. they said the field test is one of several tools they use. they are also hoping for another

we've had some glitches but things are getting busy. this is on interstate 80 westbound. traffic is okay. it's a little busy as you approach the mcarthur mace. it's hard to tell which day of the week. there always seems to be one where the traffic is lighter than the other. perhaps today will be the day. westbound bay bridge is backed up. that's a moderate delay. not too bad coming in from 880, especially if are a using fast track. 80 we had earlier troubles. at 7:10, let's go to steve. >> another sunny day. by the coast even though it's sunny, cooler, slight component but probably more likely. you'll head over there. it won't be as warm. the leading edge of the cooling is up to the north. it's not much.

40s still. look at hayward, 59. so there's a wide variety of temps. santa rosa cool morning. a high of 85 with a beautiful 70 at noon. north, northeast, northwest. very light but all over the map, i've seen anything from a westerly wind, but it's far less today than it was yesterday. once this system gets closer i think you'll see more of a westerly or southwesterly breeze. sunny and warm. cooler coast even though it will be in the 60s and 70s. but a big low will be dropping down. that's going to send our temperatures dropping down once we get through the weekend. today 60s to 90. mid to upper 80s, similar to yesterday's highs but five to 1 degrees cooler.

good morning. there's fog. 60s, 70s. the helicopter left behind in pakistan by the navy seals who killed osama bin laden is getting some attention now. some aviation experts say they have never seen anything like it. we have the theories about it. what are people finding so fascinating, jamie? >> reporter: it's an odd looking tail assembly. two helicopters were iced. they brought in the navy seals, the command does. one had a problem. in the end the u.s. forces decided to destroy that helicopter and leave. it the idea you destroy it and get rid of the evidence. what happened was they left

behind a giant piece of the tail assembly. it doesn't lock look anything that's normal to someone who's an expert. it's nothing i've ever seen. and he agreed with me. i've gotten suggestions on what it might be. one thing it looks like, it's a top secret kind of helicopter, a stealth helicopter used by the navy seals. obviously, a big chunk of it was left behind. >> it looks like an improvised screen trying to protect it. also, i'm curious, what does pakistan plan to do with the compound where osama bin laden was living for several years? >> reporter: first, they hauled away that piece of the helicopter yesterday. we're hearing they may blow up the entire compound so it doesn't become a focus, a shrine. they don't want people to flock to it to pay homage to osama bin

laden. it's interesting. there are a lot of people in d.c., not only lawmakers but experts trying to figure out how could bin laden stay there without anybody knowing. we just had a hearing that convened in the senate about that exact issue. >> and just had comments from pakistan. all right. thank you so much. coming up at 7:30 we'll have a live report from new york's ground zero. that's where president obama will take part in a wreath laying ceremony. the president is on his way to new york right now. this is just in. as i mentioned, pakistan's army is now admitting to shortcomings in its efforts to locate osama bin laden. the statement from the pakistan army was just released five minutes ago and it's the first since the u.s. raid that killed bin laden. the pakistan army has been criticized for failing to locate

him in this large compound in this army town. meanwhile, the cia is going over the stash of information brought back from the compound. agents are combing through files on five computers, 100 storage devices such as flash drives and 10 hard drives. intelligence officials call it the most significant collection of information in the history of the war on terror. at least 20 iraqi police officers were killed by a suicide bomber about 60 miles south of baghdad. look at these pictures. we got pictures of the wreckage. a suicide bomber drove a car packed with bombs around the barrier around the less headquarters. officers were waiting for a change in the shift. 40 other people were hurt. this is the second significant attack in iraq since the death of osama bin laden.

prince william and his new bride are coming to california. this is video of the couple after their couple last friday. their visit overseas will be the first official trip as a married couple. they will tour canada first and arrive in california on july 8th and will stay for three days. the palace has not released their itinerary. we don't know if the trip will include the bay area but this will be kate middleton's first trip to the u.s. the number of americans out of work jumped unexpectantly last week. the markets are down, 80. 474,000 filed for first time unemployment benefits. and the third time in four weeks the number has increased.

experts had forecast a drop in the number of first-time claims. google has agreed to make a $30 million lease payment to the city of mountain vow all at work. now they're asking if they need to go ahead with planned budget cuts. they say this would help fill some of the city's $2 1/2 million budget gap. lams on the pen -- lawmakers on the peninsula said they have a plan. they want to modify the two tracks between san francisco and san jose so they can be used by both bullet trains and cal trains, however, they say the cal trains wouldn't be able to meet the time. it is 7:20.

me on numbers. about 100 people have signed up for help and aid. 28 people stayed in a shelter just around the corner at sixth and fulsom. that's where a temporary shelter was set up for folks who live inside this building, the clark hotel. investigators are expected to be out later this morning. the damage is apparent from the front. what isn't clear is the cause of the flames. we spoke to firefighters this morning who told us they used thermal imaging to check for hot spots. you're looking at some of the video from last night. it ranged -- raged through clark hotel. burning timbers fell causing the fire chief to evacuate firefighters. flames spread to adjacent structures. one commercial, the other a six-unit apartment building.

as we mentioned, about 100 people requested help from the american red cross which set up that temporary shelter as a recreational center. >> we have lines in case we find hot spots. we're walking through with a thermal imaging camera. in a few hours the investigators will come back and try to pinpoint a cause. >> reporter: i can't downplay the fact this was a down playing fear. this little chihuahua was found. the fire department will contact the spca. the dog did not have a name tag. the small dog, shaking from the ordeal, seemed to be all right. a spokesperson from the american red cross, you'll hear from that

person in just about an hour. >> all right. thank you, jade. we also have video of a one-alarm fire that sent a plume of smoke over the castro district. the fire was reported yesterday at 12:33 p.m. at a four-story building on collinwood street. the cause is under investigation. there was a deadly stabbing overnight in san jose and police are still searching for the attacker. the unidentified victim was found on flint crest drive about 11:30 last night. he died later at the hospital. that investigation continues. there are new clues this morning about the whereabouts of a missing sonoma state student. the mother said a signal from his cell phone was detected in santa rosa on april 24th.

his debit card was used two days before that and he left suicide notes around his dorm and home in walnut creek following the breakup of a relationship. police say he also took a handgun out of his home in walnut creek. two chp officers suffered injuries after a mean for crash. a van crashed into their parked a trel car. the officers were helping to redirect traffic. it's not clear if the van driver was injured or what may have caused the crash. the accident shut down three northbound lanes for more than two hours. accused serial killer will be back in court. the 77-year-old photographer from reno is charged with

killing four northern california women dating back to the 1970s. investigators believe he may be responsible for murders in other parts of the country. today is the beginning of a san jose summer program for people who want to have gang-related tattoos removed. it would be free of charge. in exchange they make a commitment to their education, careers and community service. that includes a course on things like trust, communication and career prospect. once that course is finished in july, they will qualify to have their tattoos removed. in the east bay there was a big blow to an international drug trafficking ring. agents seized 135 pounds of methamphetamine worth $7 million. they also confiscated assault weapons, handguns and

on wall street numbers are down. the down currently down 70. the nasdaq is flat. and the s&p is down six. one of the reasons the market is down, a new study shows americans are using less gas and oil is tumbling more than 3% right now after the government reported the jump in application for unemployment benefits. it added to growing concerns about weaker concerns and

this new development could also complicate things here in california. now the state is reporting an unexpected $2 billion surge in tax receipts. that was way ahead of expectations. it will help lawmakers close the budget deficit. the problem, the windfall could complicate the governor's push for tax increases, which he said are needed. we spoke to people this morning about what they think. >> there are a lot of single parents out here. taking more taxes would take more money from us and that would take from our families and homes. >> reporter: the money comes from income taxes. it's about 5% more than expected. governor brown's office does point out that the state constitution require unexpected receipts go back to the school.

101. a dumpster fire and apparently what was in the dumpster was determined by the authorities to be possibly hazardous. i want to put this on the map. i'll show you in the area of santa rosa. it's on lance drive near kerney, west of highway 101, the redwood highway. police have told us that some people are being asked to stay inside their homes until the fire department gets a handle on this. it's very possible that's what's burning may not be hazardous. out of an abundance of caution, they think something may be nauseous. firefighters have special apparatus. they won't be at risk but if you're watching from near there, you can tom us in the newsroom, tell us what you see.

us why the nurses decided to strike. >> the picket line is in front of children's hospital. the hospital is filling in with 125 replacement workers who will fill in. i spoke to a woman who came to see a doctor this morning. show was apologetic about having to come to the hospital today. >> we had this appointment waiting for two months. we had to get referred here twice because he's a special needs child. >> reporter: this was the scene, a big congregation just about to walk the pick the lines. the issue is healthcare benefits. the nurses have been working without a contract since july. the hospital offered a kaiser plan, a supplement allan and the third, which gives the most choices also cost the most.

they would have to contribute 15% of the cobra cost. they want to take their children to children's hospital but it's not affordable. we spoke to the hospital this morning. they said, especially during the rough time we're going through, during these economic times, nurses, like everybody else, have to contribute. >> we need to make adjustments in order for this hospital not have to cut services, to not cut jobs and this union is going to have to face the reality of our economic times. >> i think workers need to say no, that healthcare is not something we should have to pay for that we all deserve healthcare and nurses in particular feel that what i. >> there's some heavy security here at the hospital. the hospital hired a security contractor to come in. they are very visible. there was talk about how much

rafael, spilling medical records and other sensitive papers onto the freeway. it's possible anyone could have grabbed the papers that contained social security numbers and other private information. a san rafael man remains in jail this morning accused of using a hidden video camera to peep under women's dresses. police say they cod 26-year-old nicholas springer in the act at the fairfax market. they claim he attached a camera to the shoe. he was arrested on misdemeanor charges. san francisco's police chief and his command staff are trading in their gas guzzling cars. the chief informed the top brass they will be trading in the crown vehicle tore yays and suv's for hybrid vehicles. it's not clear how the city will pay for this but the gas mileage is expected to save. the crown victorias get between 14 and 19 miles a gallon.
