now. that is definitely going to impact the morning commute. again they hope to have this gas line capped within minutes, we're on top of this working to get more information as we do. we will bring it to you. in just the past two hours, homeland security officials say they've learned al-qaida was planning a possible attack on the united states. our julie haener live in the newsroom with details on the possible target and how experts learned of these plans. >> reporter: al-qaida was planning to attack u.s. trains in september on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attack. the plans were in the beginning stages but they were enough to send a warning across the country. they found a treasure-trove of materials from al-qaida. the team pulled out dvds and documents from the home.

they have found that al-qaida is considering tampering with a u.s. rail track. the attack would reported lid happen this september 11th. counter terrorism officials say the plot was hatched back in february of 2010. and they have no recent intelligence about any active plant to launch this attack. but the associated press attained a nationwide alert sent out today by the homeland security department. it warned law enforcement officials about this potential threat. this is a quote from that warning. while it is clear there is some level of warning we have no recent information to indicate an active ongoing plot to target transportation and no information on possible locations or specific targets. a homeland security spokesman said the al-qaida plot is quote on initial reporting which he said can be misleading or inaccurate. and despite the alert released by the ap, it says the

government has no plan to issue an official terror alert. >> julie. thank you. we called amtrak about the threat. and they said they received the advisory and released this statement. we will encounter and change measures when and if ready. a senior defense official says only one of the five people killed inside the compound was armed and he says that person never fired a shot. the official was talking off the record and anonymously. he also says the defense team made a floor by floor search eliminating those they encountered. pakistan's army announced today that u.s. military personnel in that country will be reduced to minimum essential levels. in today's statement, the

division chief frank fioni was one of menlo firefighters that went to ground zero after the september 11th attack. >> we lost 343 firefighters there as well as all the civilians. it's not really closure but it helps heal the wounds. >> you were literally in that pile of debris and you were probably inhaling dust that contained the remnants of people who were in those buildings. the reality was that it was something out of a space aged movie. >> reporter: the firefighters spent 15 days on the debris pile and most paid a price. they came back with chronic breathing illnesses, it's a problem that has affected many who sifted through the rubble. >> we asked our rescuers to

wear respiratory equipment. but it was very difficult to talk on the radios. >> after everything that happened to me, i would still go. >> reporter: firefighters say they will never forget what happened 9/11. we meet a north bay man who's wife died in a plane crash on september 11th. news today, we're finally hearing on the news that twitted on the deadly raid of osama bin laden as it happened. you probably heard the story. the man lives in the same pakistani town where navy seals located and killed osama bin laden. he was awake and twitting when he heard a helicopter and explosion. >> i was on my home and working online when i heard a helicopter, and it was there in the air for about five to eight minutes at least. >> reporter: and when he found out about osama bin laden's

postponed until may 16. the seventh suspect is being charged as a juvenile. a try lent home in -- and we have the story of a violent home invasion. >> reporter: i'm at the santa clara sheriff's department in san jose where just a couple of hours ago authorities released this press releast about a big break in a home invasion robbery in gilroy. six suspects are now in custody, and we're learning that one is a neighbor of the victim. the crime happened in rutger. investigators say they tortured him in an effort to get the combination to a safe which included collections of gun, stamped and coins. >> not only did these suspects

beat up the victim with cue sticks and wooden stick, they also poured a liquid medical substance all over the face and body to create more pain. >> reporter: the six suspects were arrested on wednesday in locations from gilroy to san jose. one of the suspects is a 17- year-old juvenile. total ball is in the excess of $6 million. juvenal reyes lived in the street where the victim lived. >> one of the individuals had information that the victim had all these collections that could be worth a lot of money. >> reporter: and as we told you last night during the course of the home invasion investigation. deputies on tuesday stumbled upon a marijuana grow house and confiscated $8 million of pot. a suspect in that case is still

at large. lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. nurses at children's hospital in oakland began a five day strike this morning. the hospital's contract with the california's nurses association retired last july. at issue is health care coverage. the hospital has issued several plans. including a ppo that would cost nurses $5,000 a year and includes care of their children at the hospital. >> we need to make adjustments in order for this hospital to not cut services, to not cut jobs and this union is going to have to face the reality of our economic times. >> i don't think this is something we need to do. i think workers have to say no that health care is not something we should have to pay for. >> reporter: the strike is scheduled to end next tuesday morning. the hospital has hired 125 replacement nurses. new unemployment numbers

the sacramento grand jury is investigating this matter. people celebrating cinco de mayo is starting to head into downtown san jose right now. robert handa telling me no one really sure what to expect tonight especially after the cinco de mayo celebration was abruptly cancelled today. >> reporter: as you can see police have already started setting up these no stopping signs. because in a few hours, officers are not going to allow new vehicles to park here between market and eighth street. the reason to make sure a celebration can't take place and that it's peaceful. about 300 people gathered this afternoon, a modest event with a few people. >> leave your pride aside, we have to scale down guys.

in the line of defending our city and our country. >> reporter: the people who took part included the family of officer george wright. he was killed in the line of duty back in 1907. people in the santa rosa neighborhood have a lot to talk about following a toxic scare. fire crews responded to a small fire this morning in a home near lance drive and kernie street. the bigger commotion came when a canister was found. the canister was venting some type of gas and a stay order was established. >> the can was emitting some explosive gas. >> reporter: experts figured out that the suspense was a hydrogen gas mixture.

the shelter in place order was lifted minutes later. the owner said he was planning to recycle the can. and cooler right along the coast and around the bay and in san francisco. but tomorrow cooler still for everybody. right now in redwood city it is 81 degrees. check on the buoy there in redwood shores. the winds are blowing north- northwest at 16. that's the cooler air direction and that's what's changing. the winds have shifted around. winds more off the water and that's going to drop temperatures significant tomorrow. they didn't do much today. but you see around the bay it did. cooled down san francisco, cooled down redwood city but still very warm in the valleys and the north bay and south bay. here is how it breaks down. tomorrow is going to be mild out there. patchy coastal fog in some places. and in the weekend, clouds and some sun and cooler still. but a nice weekend. just not like it's been. we're dealing with temperatures in the 90s.

the smoke and flames could be seen from blocks away. we showed them to you live during ktvu news at 5:00 and 6:00. the fire broke out in a residential hotel in the south of market area in san francisco. tonight we're hearing from some of those who barely got out in time. sal castaneda is live at the scene of the fire. is that building a total loss. >> reporter: surprisingly frank it's not. i want to show you the building here. you can see that the top is damaged but firefighters told

me the building is still standing and is a good chance it will be refurbished although it will take months. right now dozens of people are still without a place to stay. residents were allowed to quickly go in. some came out with boxes and bags. we found some that were inside when the fire began. >> as i reached for the door, i saw smoke coming from the bottom. i realize, i don't have time for my papers. >> in the city it's hard to tell if somebody is faking or something. but i saw the smoke coming from my vent and i thought, oh-oh. >> reporter: the fire escalated to four alarms and quickly spread to three adjacent buildings that were badly damaged. >> we decided to evacuate the building after several sweeps of the building. and switch over from offensive or interior attack to an exterior defensive mode where we put up the latter pipes from

firefighters found this chihuahua cowering in a corner. they said he was partly hidden by all the debris and that he didn't even bark when he was found. president obama will meet with some of those involved in capturing osama bin laden. they are the best of the navy seals and trained together for special mission. quick training and quick execution are crucial. >> third goes left, you take the walls down, target in the middle and you go on to the next room.

it is a dancing bear. you know when you stop, you're a target. >> reporter: mark says he's proud of the men who carried out the raid on osama bin laden's compound. he said there were no hick ups on the mission. one of the most intriguing surprises from the navy seals raid was the way they slip into that compound and it appears that he flew in on a secret stealth helicopter. the modified black hawk was damaged by a hard landing during the assault. the seal team blew some of the copter and some of the chopper remained down. the army says they were as surprised as everyone to see the photos. >> certainly the piece that we see is none that we've seen. >> it also had special baffling

there is word tonight that some people may one day be able to avoid long security lines at airports. the new york times reports the head of the transportation security administration is backing a so called trusted travelers program. based on information from frequent flier programs, trusted travelers would be able to keep their shoes on and avoid body scanners. a similar program for aircraft pilots and flight attendants will start this summer. no word when a trusted travelers program may be available for civilians. new data tonight on the contamination of bay area produce from that japanese nuclear disaster. ktvu health and science editor john fowler is live now to explain the risks and also the risks to workers that went inside that nuclear plant in
