looking to keep drunk drivers off the road. >> reporter: we're on east santa clara street one of many areas where police try to crack down on people who drink and drive. as we've been reporting, police discovered they had defective breathalyzers so they'll be using older breathalyzer. we know these older breathalyzer are effective but will 30 be enough tonight? >> 30 is not a number we would care to plan with for an event like this. but we're going to make due with it. 60 is the number we stock our officers on a nightly basis. 30 is what we have and are going to be employed out here. >> reporter: does it hamper you very much? >> no it's a matter of planning. we have the resources available to us to deploy at least 30 of these downtown. that's plenty. and my guess is several of those will be pulled to other

first brought you the story. fire crews are searching for hot spots. they say they have found no evidence of an indoor bbq that some witnesses say started the fire. two dozen people are still looking to find long term shelter tonight. on a brighter note. a chihuahua that was discovered this morning in the debris has now been reunited with his owner. it appears u.s. trains may have been al-qaida's next target. counter terrorism officials say they found evidence in osama bin laden's compound that al- qaida had hoped to attack a rail line this coming september on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attack. intelligence analysts say the attack did not appear to be far enough along to actually plot an attack. we contacted amtrak they

released a statement is that said. amtrak employees remain at a heightened state of vigilance. and president obama will meet with the navy seals that carried out the raid. in new york today the president observed a moment of silence at ground zero for the 9/11 victims. the president layed a wreath at the foot of what was called the survivor tree that was found in the rubble of the debris. president also met with families who lost loved ones in the attack. and policemen who responded on that fateful day. today's service at ground zero brought back a lot of memories for those here in the bay area that lost loved ones on 9/11 and the first responders who stepped in to help after the attack.

rob roth is live in menlo park where he talked to a man who's wife was killed on that day. rob. >> reporter: frank, many of the victims of 9/11 were from the bay area. one of them was loren frank. >> reporter: grancola says he wears a bracelet with her name inscripted to keep her close. grancola says what he hopes would happen 10 years ago teaches him a big lesson. that's what his wife would have wanted. >> better relations around the

world and a more peaceful tomorrow. for members of the search and rescue team the president's visit to new york marks a day of reflection. >> all of us who were there at ground zero. it's a part of us that will never, it will live on through the rest of our lives. >> reporter: about 20 firefighters went to new york about a week after the attack, their job was to sift through the massive pile of rubble looking for human remains. >> you want to do everything you can to help those people there and to be able to bring folks back. be able to find people, be able to make rescues. the difficult part was not being able to make rescues. >> the eerie sounds, the smells of decomposing human beings. the smell of quite honestly burning victims that were in that pile. >> reporter: the firefighters say the death of osama bin laden and the president's visit have not brought them closure. but they say it has helped heal some of the wounds.

street. the dow plunged 125 points. the nasdaq dropped 13 points. hundreds of nurses at oakland's children's hospital are now on strike over the next five days, california nurses association says about 800 nurses will walk off the job, some of those were out picketing today. their contract expired in july. the nurses are opposed to the health care package being offered in a new contract. 125 replacement nurses have been hired to work during the strike. hospital officials say the facility lost almost $18 million in 2009. there is new ammunition tonight in the fight over pension reform. pub public employees make more in pension than in the public sector. >> the benefits are three times higher than what our top

employers in california pay their employees. >> reporter: union question the study, they say it was paid for by anonymous out of state donors. they add that teachers make far less than their equivalent workers. the state assembly today passed the california dream act. it allows illegal immigrants who are attending college and paying instate tuition to collect private scholarships. >> are we not simply educating these kids so that they can go out and work in the underground work force? because they are not legally be hired. >> reporter: the california dream act now heads to the state senate. california's top three elementary schools are right here in the bay area. the state department of education released the list today based on standardsized

some patients who need expensive name brand pen medications will be able to get them sooner under a proposed bill in the legislature. medical and most insurance companies require patients to try generic prescriptions first everyone if your doctor disagrees. lawmakers who want to outlaw the practice says it costs more in the long run through increase doctor visits while a patient remains in pain. a plan to manage the sacramento delta is being criticized today by the academy of sciences. $150million has been spent on the delta conservation plan. it is supposed to balance wildlife habitat against the state's water needs. the academy says the plan is incomplete. it is critical on a proposal to build a canal to carry water to southern california. this truck backing up through the american river is carrying what the game and fish department hopes will be a renewed salmon population.

new chopper 2 took this video. the ss president from the moth ball fleet was waiting to be towed to texas for recycling. but now it's been traded for a texas company for another ship from the moth ball fleet. that ship was supposed to go to texas but it had a bad leak. so now it'll be scrapped here while the s.s. texan will be scrapped in texas. >> and kind of a nightmare

matinee if you will. what a difference 24 hour makes. last night we talked about the sharks win, a's win, giants win. not so much tonight. jonathan sanchez just continues to have problems with control. he walked the numbers eight and nine hitters in the 2nd inning with two outs and then he gets burned as jose reyes burns him out. 3-1 here. sanchez tries to make up for it with the two-out single himself. closed the deficit to 3-2. but the giants lose 5-2. all told a 5-5 road trip. this afternoon celebrating cinco de mayo out there at the coliseum. or whatever it is they call it these days, 2-1 indians in the eighth. ryan sweeney 5-6. blues went in there. that's a flair that's going to tie it 2-2. we go to the 12, former a jack hanahan.
