>> i'm heather holmes. more questions about the safety of workers at napa state worker. another attack happened on a staff member. a source inside say the incident happened 2:15 p.m. this afternoon. a female physical therapist was being chased by a psychiatric patient and a man stepped in and the man received a serious beating. we just spoke with the hospital and they are not commenting on this incident today. there have been calls to improve security after a psychiatric technician was killed by a patient last october and a month before that incident a rehabilitation therapist was attacked and hospitalized by another patient. now we have a crew on the way to napa and we will have more details coming up tonight on the 10 p.m. news. the highway patrol is investigating a deadly crash off highway 1 in sonoma county. the vehicle went over the highway just before 12:30:00

p.m. this afternoon. there you can see it in the surf at the bottom of the rocks. it crashed down a seaside cliff just north of badega bay much the driver who was the only person in the vehicle was killed in the crash. her identity has not yet been released. new details tonight about a double murder suicide in. the gunman had been served court papers and made threats only the day before. we go to fairfield where police have been called to this house many times. >> reporter: called here a dozen times in the past year. as a former couple sharing this house fueded over who should live here. a cleanup crew spent today working to erase what happened so violently yesterday. a 37-year-old man police say went room-to-room gunning for other residents including his former wife who died along with a 41-year-old man. the gunman shot himself and died too after being air

lifted. a neighbor remaining nameless describes him as bitter and angry. >> and he is filled with hatred. first for the wife. mainly for the wife. and he is very paranoid. >> there will be a buildup of conflict over several months. >> reporter: police say the day before his rampage the gunman had been legally served some sort of civil degree having to do with one of the tenants. that night neighbors say he threatened to kill his 27-year- old ex, co-owner of the house. police responded and talked to her but not him. >> it was a concern at the time by the person calling. there was no request for further action. there was no request for any type of arrest. >> reporter: this resident, a 27-year-old man, survived the gunfire barricading himself in a bedroom but a bullet grazed his ankle. he said the gunman had never been violent, at worst had broken a dish in anger. even with an average of a call a month to this house police

say their hands were tied trying to quell the turmoil. for the former couple apparently selling and going separate ways wasn't an option. >> her main interest was monetary, she wanted to take the guy for everything he was worth and he snapped. >> reporter: and the 73-year- old neighbor says he may sue police because in the uproar they knocked him down and tased him and kept him cuffed in a patrol car. for their part police say he was interfering with their emergency response. reporting live in fairfield, ktvu channel 2 news. one person is being treated for serious burns and six others are displaced tonight after a fire in oakland. it broke out around 10 p.m. last night at the building on 62nd street and san pueblo avenue. the cause of the fire is under investigation. also in oakland tonight police are looking for five suspects wanted in connection with the shooting that left one

person with multiple gunshot wounds. the injuries are considered life threatening. the shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. yesterday evening in the 2700 block of high street. some bay area native americans have new reason to protest tonight. this time over the name of one of america's most famous warriors. christian captain is live in vallejo where there is anger over the code name given to osama bin laden. >> reporter: the protest here is ongoing in vallejo, a protest that has been going on for quite awhile over the proposed development of what natives are calling sacred land and land they cherish. some are saying the government has taken a cherished native american figure and tagged it onto that of a mass murder. >> it can never be a right. it is a wrong that happened and it can never be right. >> reporter: she is a member of the pitt river tribe and said she learned in an. mail that the mission to kill

expected to feel the winds. high winds are cooling things down outside. just how low will the temperatures go? we go to the weather center for more. >> you will feel a bit of a chill in the air tonight as we do head into tomorrow morning. as far as the winds you can see some of the most recent gusts reported for santa rosa and concord. 36-mile-an-hour. 6 p.m. holding onto the gusty winds. 55 to 60 degrees. breezy. winds 15 to 25 miles per hour. 8 p.m. and then 10 p.m. temperatures will be dropping back down into the upper 40s to lower 50s. we still have some clouds to talk about at least for this evening. not a lot to show you at 5 p.m. but look what happens as we do approach the midnight areas. clouds pushing into the region and there is still a slight chance of a few spotty sprinkles pushing through the bay area. clouds clear out overnight and as a result temperatures cool off rapidly. here is a look at some of the numbers first thing for santa

in san francisco recently has ties to the sher sheriff's department. >> he is accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian then smashing into several parked cars. the san francisco chronicle says he is a cadet working as a security guard at the 911 emergency call center since 2008. he was on his day off when this accident happened. san jose city councilman arrested this weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. the highway patrol pulled him over early yesterday morning near market and san fernando streets in downtown san jose for a broken taillight. during the stop they suspected he had been drinking. his blood alcohol was reportedly .12% which is way above the legal limit. he issued a statement saying i offer no excuses. i am deeply embarrassed by my

action and i am prepared to take the full consequences for them. san francisco's new police chief continues to make cuts at the top. according to today's san francisco chronicle he is giving up the large suv and his driver saying he knows his way around town. he will reportedly buy a ford focus hybrid. he already cut the pay of his staff and refused a salary increase. it comes with talks about slicing compensation. california teachers want to educate the country about the budget. they led a rally and staged a sit in starting tomorrow at the capitol in sacramento. 21,000 teachers have received pink slips and that is an indication they lose their jobs in the fall. the teachers' union is pressing governor brown to forget that special election and instead push republicans directly for approval of tax extensions. the budget is expected to run

there have been reports near osama bin laden's compound today. the news comes as pakistani authorities try to decide what to do with that building which has become an embarrassment for the government. >> reporter: r re ports of an explosion in the vicinity of osama bin laden's compound in abbottabad making them think they will blow up the compound. it is still a crime scene. they are still interrogating the three wives of osama bin laden. the youngest of whom seems to be giving away the most information. any details she give them needs to be corroborated with a visit to the site. they have already destroyed much of the furniture and personal items of bin laden at

the house but an extraordinary news, one which will no doubt complicate any additional information especially if the c.i.a. gets involved if they are willing to do that. but they are being denied access to both the bin laden wives and children and also the scene itself. meanwhile, more details of the pakistani story is due on monday. the pakistani minister will give a briefing to parliament of what exactly happened during the raid. he has continued to deny that the pakistani authorities whether civilian or military actually new osama bin laden was in the country. he could have been here up tore seven and a half years according to information gleaned from bin laden youngest wife. bin laden spent most of his time on the top floor of the building. today former new york city mayor rudy giuliani who led his

city through the 9/11 crisis called it an american achievement with the death of bin laden and credited both president obama and president bush. >> i thanked president bush because no matter what you come out on the debate of that water boarding no doubt all the work he did and changes he made in intelligence brought this about. >> former vice president dick cheney called for renewed use of water boarding. it is believed the name of the courier who led the u.s. to bin laden came from detainees the u.s. was holding and who might have been subjected to harsh interrogation. a flight headed to san diego was diverted today following a security threat onboard. the flight was diverted around 10 a.m. this morning to alburquerque, new mexico, after a suspicious note was found in a restroom and the plane was taken to a remote area of the airport where officials say all 107 passengers were then taken off the plane and interviewed. no threat was found and the airliner was cleared to take

off again. the incident though is being investigated by the fbi. in japan this weekend more fallout from the earthquake and nuclear crisis. the board of directors of the nuclear power plant met to discuss a request by the government to shut down that plant. the government has expressed concerns the plant south of tokyo is vulnerable in case of a massive earthquake. it is estimated about 19% of japan's manufacturing companies including this green tea factory are located in the area where power is supplied by that plant. there are concerns that rolling blackouts that may follow the plant closure could hurt the economy. in egypt, people pelting each other with stones in the streets. it is the second day of clashes between muslim extremists and christians following a fire bombing of a church. egyptian troops moved into the

area today. the interim military government has done little to stop escalating violence since back in february. in italy the italian coastguard and local fishermen rescued 528 refugees from the libyan ferry that ran aground. most of the passengers were migrant workers. thousands of refugees have fled to the 8 square mile island which is the southern most territory of italy. in eastern syria two demonstrators were shot to death by security forces as others moved in to pull down a statute of the brother of the president. military has been given shoot to kill orders and is carrying out massive roundups of expected dissidents. more than 500 demonstrators have been killed since it began six weeks ago. 34 people were injured

today in a commuter train crash in new jersey. the train hit an abutment at a platform. none of the injuries are considered life threatening. national transportation safety board and port authority are investigating the crash but officials believe a mechanical failure is to blame. authorities hope to have the tracks open later tonight. a new report shows los angeles police are frequently battling their own departments in court and winning. according to today l.a. times the city paid out more than $18 million during the past five years to its own officers. 17 officers won million dollar settlements. their lawsuits complained of sexual harassment, racial discrimination and other workplace violations. critics say the city's job protection rules make it too hard to fire officers who cause problems. several children in southern california were injured after an inflatable house they were playing in suddenly collapsed. it happened yesterday at a

mississippi river are seeing the worst flooding they have seen in decades. the river will crest in 36 hours. here is the latest. >> reporter: m mo re people are being evacuated in parts of tennessee on this mother's day as the mississippi river continues to rise. the national weather service says the river will likely reach its highest level in more than 70 years on tuesday. it is expected to crest at 48 feet. that's 14 feet above flood stage. in memphis officials are going door-to-door telling residents to flee for higher ground. >> we ask them to cooperate with the civil authorities and when they are told to evacuate please do so. >> flooding from the river also forces thousands of people to leave their homes in mississippi. governor barber has asked for a major disaster declaration for 15 counties in the state. one of the hardest hit areas. most of the casinos along the river have closed. the flooding in the mississippi and ohio river valleys have created problems in illinois,

200 people all across that state. mental health teams from the red cross and the university of alabama are offering survivors free crisis counselling. the health experts are especially concerned now because they say grief often doesn't truly set in until weeks or even months after a disaster. a security drill is wrapping up right now at a south bay train station but federal officials say it has nothing to do with the train attack plot found last week at osama bin laden compound. it took place but did not directly involve cal trainor amtrak put on by both federal and local authorities and centered around dealing with criminal and terrorist activity. the california public utilities commission is calling for answers from pg&e over continuing underground electrical vault fires. one of the most spectacular was this one in san francisco in 2005. you might remember this. the san jose mercury news reports there have been 78 incidents in just the last six

years. 31 of those involved explosions. 14 in which manhole covers blew right off. pg&e says it spent $200 million upgrading the system in san francisco alone. the puc wants to know why the incidents continue. the most recent occurred on wednesday in the south bay. and those metallic helium balloons are increasingly popular gifts on mother's day and other holidays but pg&e is warning people to keep them away interest electrical fires. in the past year alone the mylar balloons have cost 250 power outages in the bay area affecting 130 customers. the utility says tie a weight to the balloon so it doesn't get into the power lines. under no circumstances should you try to entangle one from a power line. you should call the utility instead. now to an amazing story of survival. listen to this. a canadian woman was found alive in her van after being stranded for seven weeks in a remote nevada forest.

the 57-year-old woman is recovering tonight in an idaho hospital. she and her husband had been missing since march when their vehicle got stuck in the mud. she survive the on trail mix and melted snow. there is still no sign of her husband albert who left their van in search of help. >> we are celebrating but we are also, of course, praying for another miracle. we just want to find him. >> the search crews are still combing that area for the woman's husband but say it is unlikely that they will find him alive. almost 600 kids crowded into great america in santa clara today. it was a day of fun and family and for those kids a much needed break in their fight against cancer. we are introduced now to one of those special kids and her mom. >> reporter: ca rmen will tell you her mother is her everything. her friend. her rock. the one who has always been there. >> i remember sometimes more

we are very familiar with the fear of beard mantra when it comes to a certain baseball team. not something we normally associate with the golf tour. seve ballesteros remembered today. jonathan byrd lost his father to brain cancer two years ago, the same thing that took seve ballesteros. an approach that set him up for an easey birdie putt. byrd ran out to a four stroke lead quickly. but byrd's college teammate at clemson luke glover shot himself into contention. chipping in from the fringe at number 8 for birdie. glover looking for his first win since the 2009 open. number 2 glover in front after this putt for eagle. up by a stroke in the clubhouse. he then had to wait. and byrd had a pressure shot in him. he is at 18 putting for a
