70s inland. here is sal. traffic is getting busier on interstate 880 driving out to the mccarthur maze and the bay bridge which is also getting busier here. you can see crowding in the left lanes approaching the cash toll lanes. th fast track lanes are still doing okay. coming up in a few minutes the complete bay area look. but first back to the desk. a frightening incident on a jet bound for sfo. a passenger got out of his seat and rushed toward cockpit. kraig debro is at sfo this morning. >> reporter: pam, i contacted the san mateo county jail they are not releasing a booking photo just yet but one may be available later today. behind me is terminal two. it was an american airlines flight flight 561 from chicago to san francisco.

police began transporting the suspect overnight after being questioned by counterterrorism agents is police say 28-year- old is being held on suspicion of interfering with a flight clue. they walked from coach to first class and began pounding on the cockpit door and yelling. people blogged about what happened and said he was yelling god is great in arabic. >> he does speak english. i don't have the information about what he was saying at this time. i just know he was yelling and pounding on the cockpit. >> it was quite scary. because we fly that and you start thinking something could happen. interestingly it could be a crack pot. >> reporter: people flying this morning reacted to the incident

in two ways. he was subdued with a special stoplight i set of handcuffs. one is retired a secret service agent the other is a retired san mateo police officer. the suspect has a yemen passport and california id. he has no known ties to any terrorist group that law enforcement has uncovered so far. reporting live at sfo kraig debro. time now 6:03. an early morning house fire in oakley is under investigation. take a look at the scene last night. this about 11:30 when the flames were raging. they were shooting from the home's roof on bay view drive. neighbors called 911 after hearing that smoke alarm you hear there. no one was inside at the time. no one was hurt. arson investigators are looking into a better cause at the fire.

we have a news crew there at the sen. we physical you the season say this fire seems suspicious. another violent incident is causing new concern this morning. a.m. a.m. is live of what happened. ally. >> reporter: they are not commenting on what happened here yesterday. the psychiatric technician unit is investigating what happened. according to the union representative a worker stepped in help another coworker. that psychiatric technician was injured. he was treated for his injuries although he was not hospitalized. the technician union rep says he's doing okay. but other staff members remain

uneasy. they are renewing calls for more security to protect workers at the hospital. and v investigative -- 80% have a criminal history. [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: now back in october a napa state hospital worker was killed on the job here. donna gross was strangled by a patient. state mental health officials say they are creating a special area in the hospital specifically for violent patients and that unit would be staffed byarm officers -- would be staffed by law enforcement officers. reporting live in napa allie

rasmus. we are learning new details about the man suspected of kari out a -- carrying out a murder- suicide in solano county last night. he shot and killed his two roommates on saturday before taking his own life. police tell us they responded to the house the day before over some sort of legal disput. >> they did everything they could do the night before. there was no indication there was going to be any violence. another man in the house at the time of the shooting said he was more talk, talk and never showed any violence. the cia wants to question osama bin laden's three wives. they are in the custody of pakistan. cia wants information about ben laden and the inner workings.

sarah shourd who was released in september will not return for the trial. bauer and fattal have not been able to speak to their family since november. time now 6:07 a san jose city council member is apologizing for a drunk driving on friday. he was stopped for a broken taillight. during the stop they noticed kalra had been drinking. a field sobriety test showed his blood alcohol level was .12 which is above the legal limit. kalra released this statement yesterday saying quote i offer no excuses. i'm deeply embarrassed by my action and prepared to take the full consequences for them. >> vallejo might start charging for emergency calls if they believe that person at fault is blamed for the injury. the fire and police chief wants

the city to draft aned a ordnance to cover costs. seeking reimbursement would help maintain safety services. a new honor this morning for the three kite borders that jumped into action for a rescue off of san francisco's ocean beach. back on april 9th a boat capsize the with two then on board. they were forced into the cold water. the three kite borders soon rushed in to help. they successfully rescued one of the men. the other died. now the examiner reports u.s. sailing association will honor those kite borders with its rescue medal. time now 6:09. happening right now. look at this. this is happening right now to los angeles. a huge building fire in an area called huntington park. this is live. you are seeing what we see. all of this started within the

last hour. there are several fire crews on the scene trying to get this under control. it looks completely out of control just to our naked eye. we are not sure 4:this started. we don't know if anyone has been hurt. we're not sure what type of building it is. the chopper is trying to give us a closer look. i don't see any names on this building. you can see this is quite a huge space of building that is on fire. this is out of control. they are trying to hit this with fire and foam and everything they've got. we don't know if there are chemicals involved or whats accelerant may be. there are power lines right next to it so a lot of flames a lot of dark smoke in huntington park. this is an area outside of los angeles. this is a major, major fire happening as we speak. and again you are looking at live pictures. we will find out what we can about this. we haven't heard of any injuries yet. we will keep you posted.

major breaking story. this is a huge fire until huntington park, california. a couple minutes ago it was raging. you can still see how sense it is. there are power lines. right next to that ladder. it's a warehouse area. an industrialized area. it looks like they are making some progress. we do not know what is in the warehouse. you look at the top left of your screen it looks like it's picking up again. this houses auto tires which isn't good. they are very flammable and a difficult situation. that's the latest from there. president obama says he was far from certain that osama bin laden was in a compound in pac stab before ordering that mission that killed him.

ktvu alison burns is in the u, d.c. newsroom with more on the president's most extensive description of the raid so far. >> reporter: president obama said there was about a 55% chance osama bin laden would be there. in an interview that aired last night president obama called it a 55-45 situation. he said he did not tell his family or many of the closest aids about the raid. he said there were a lot of doubts going in and the 40 minutes in the situation room watching it unfold was the longest of his life. donald rumsfeld also went on tv and praised the president's decision and went into it. >> my goodness the close coordination between the intelligence community and our special operations forces is absolutely perfection. >> reporter: president obama said as worried as he was with the huge risks associated with the operations he did not lose any sleep about the possibility of killing bin laden.

he said justice was done. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. the operator of a coastal nuclear power plant in japan agreed today to shut down its three reactors until safety is improved. the japanese government made the request after evaluating the 54 reactors following the disaster at the fukushima reactor plant. they want them to build a seawall and make other tsunami protections. workers go into the fukushima plant. the radio activity is safe new for workers to enter wearing protective suits. time now 6:citizen -- time

good morning, right now highway 4 traffic is getting busier although it's not too bad here in bay point. it is slow in antioch as you head west. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. people in memphis are bracing for what is likely to be historic flooding. forecasters now predict the mississippi river may crest later today near memphis. hundreds there have been told to leave their homes because of the threat. the army corp of engineers is monitoring the situation and they say the river is moving unbelievablely fast. record rainfall over the last month have overwhelmed the river's levies flooding could effect louisiana and mississippi next as water races south. time now 6:26. a five-day strike for nurses at children's hospital in oakland continues this morning. yesterday one man lashed out at the picket line. >> using sick kids as a bargaining chip. you are sickening.

>> that was jeff conway. he had angry words. the police were called in. they took some statements but no arrests were made. the nurses are striking over health care and whether nurses should pay more for their health care. >> we get mostly support from everybody. and from the community and we have heard from our patients and families that they support us. they understand what we do. >> the hospitals position is that strikes never accomplish anything. bargaining is done at the bargaining table. >> the hospital and the nurses say patient care has not been compromised during the strike. the nurses are expected to go back to work at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. the detroit red wings are still alive in their playoff series with the san jose sharks. >> he checks but he stays with it. lidstrom scores. >> the red wings beat the sharks 4-3. that followed detroit's third quarter rally.

was scheduled to land the passenger calmly walked to the cockpit door. when he got to the started poun yelling. he took him to the san mateo county jail. two flight attendants and two retired law enforcement officers joined the force. >> they were able to subdue that passenger, placed him on the ground, and used the flex handcuffs the flight attendants have for these types of incidents. they were able to put the handcuffs on behind his back. >> reporter: police took him first to the hospital to be treated for bruises he received in the struggle. this morning people traveling on flights say they are comfortable with security. we spoke with a woman from new zealand that tells us american flight security is more strict. >> definitely is. you have to take your shoes off

and stuff like that. >> reporter: right now the man in the san mateo jail has not been determined if bail has been sent. right now it is not possible according to people at the jail. this is an fbi case now and the fbi may have final say on whether or not the photo is released. later on we will have more from passengers. reporting live at sfo kraig debro. >> two other flights also had security scares. delta airlines flight was diverted to albuquerque. a note containing the word bomb was found in the bathroom. passengers on the plane were searched but nothing was found. the plane finished that trip to dick several hours late -- trip to san diego several hours late. passengers on board a

continental flight stopped a man that was trying to open the plane's door. the plane made a brief stop in st. louis where police took that man into custody. no one was hurt. the flight also continued on. a house burst into flames in oakley. jade hernandez has been talking to neighbors this morning and they have more. >> reporter: that is right we have learned more in the past hour. but what has been going on inside of this house before the fire last night. but first look at this. flames shooting through the roof along bay view drive. by the time the first engine was a mile away, firefighters could see the fire. firefighters arrived before 11:30 last night. the home was already engulfed in flames. this is what we are hearing from neighbors at this hour. one neighbor said he watched the homeowner take the truck

and tried to rip the walls away from the home. and if that is not bad enough he saw the man take his kitchen appliances out of the home on saturday. another neighbor said the couple that lives here inside of this home have had police at their door multiple times. >> i guess the guy had flooded his house before once and the whole house got remodeled and he trashed everything. and there was a big pile of furniture and everything. >> reporter: you're looking at the inside of this homos garage. you can see see the damage. the east contra costa county fire chief spoke to us earlier this morning. he could not tell us if the fire was suspicious in nature. but an arson investigator will try to determine what sparked the blaze.

reporting live jade hernandez ktvu channel 2 news. right now teachers are gathering in san francisco for a march and rally before riding buses to sacramento. i want to take you live to san francisco city hall where the teachers fret bay area are gather -- teachers from the bay area are gathering right now. later today they will join teachers from around the state for a sit in that is marking a state of emergency week of action. teachers are calling on state lawmakers to extend current taxes to avoid deeper cuts and save jobs. again we are looking live at what is happening this morning. on friday rallies will be held across the state including one in san francisco's civic center plaza. time now 6:36. president obama says last week's raid that killed osama

bin laden was the longest 40 minutes of his life. in a broadcast interview the president didn't know for sure. they were in the compound in pakistan but he didn't lose any sleep over the possibility that if bin laden were found, he might be killed. the president says anyone that questions the killing of a mass murder like bin laden should have their head examed. the united states is asking pakistan for permission to question bin laden's three wives. wiemar believed to be in pakistan's compound. they want to interview the women about bin laden. however relations with pakistan right now are pretty intense ever since that raid. so we don't know if the cia will be allowed to have access. now we do have more coverage art the death of osama bin laden on our newscast and online. go to ktvu.com and click on the

we continue to follow developing news out of los angeles where fire crews are battling a huge fire there. take a look. these are live pictures from above. it certainly looks a little bit better since the last time we checked in. but still a lot of black smoke. you can still see the flame there is. this is huntington park in los angeles county. the flames are coming from a food processing plant. i've been checking tweets from our news colleagues down in the los angeles area. that is what they are saying it's some sort of food distribution company possibly due to some sort of explosion from a boiler room. we have seen a lot of reports there that people heard or saw some sort of explosion before this fire started. hundreds of firefighters are on the scene. we're also hearing reports that ammonia may be burning which makes this a very toxic situation.

again we are looking live add huntington park los angeles county where you can see a lot of flames pouring from that building. apparently black smoke can be seen from los angeles international airport that means you can probably see it from the freeway as well there. again here is live pictures. we will keep updating that story. our time now 6:45. here is a look at the other top stories. airline passenger is in jail this morning after a security threat. a man from a passport from yemen got out of his seat, rushed toward the cockpit and pounded on the door. two retired law enforcement officers that were passengers managed to stop him. the motive is still not clear. on wednesday uc berkeley graduates shane bauer and josh fattal will start trial in

iran. sarah shourd who was released in september says she will not go back to iran. that river is moving fast so memphis will get hit sooner than expected. holly is live in memphis with what people are doing to prepare. holly? >> reporter: good morning, pam. as you can see the waters are continuing to rise as the mississippi fills its banks. it's like being in the mississippi river. they are expecting the waters to crest sometime around midnight they are saying tuesday. so within less than 24 hours. you can see the river here. what you might not be able to see is that this right here is a street. river side drive. cars were going up and down this street and now it's pretty much flooded out. behind me is biel street. the home of blues where all the

clubs and restaurants are. i will tell you that most of the town luxury is up a -- most of the town is up a little higher. they are having a big festival this weekend. memphis in may starts thursday. they say it's on. it is being moved inland. the levies here are holding. they are doing their job. they are hoping this will be the worst of it. and for the record the residents of memphis resilient. pam back to you. >> thank you that was a live report from memphis where they are expecting the mississippi river to crest to reach its peak sometime tonight. time now 6:48. back here at home major security concerns add napa state hospital after a patient attacked an employee. ktvu allie rasmus is live now with the details of what

happened over the weekend and why some say it's nothing new. ally. >> reporter: we are standing at the entrance to napa state hospital where all morning long we have seen a string of dozens of cars going in and out of the hospital. but many of the staff members including several we talked to just this morning say it is time for napa state hospital to improve security to protect the workers here. those calls for renewed security come after an incident that happened yesterday around 2:00. a union representative for the psychiatric technicians say a staff member was injured after he stepped in to protect another hospital worker when a patient that worker was dealing with became agitated and starts lashing outs. the technician who was injured was treated and not hospitalized and his union representative says he's doing okay. coworkers say after a string of incidents like this it's time for them to beef up security.

ktvu investigative report says that 80% of the patients here have a criminal history. hospital staff members say it's created unsafe conditions. >> do you feel safe here? >> no. >> reporter: why? >> because of the individuals who are housed there. they should not be here. >> reporter: too many of them have a criminal history? >> yeah. >> reporter: now back in october a napa state hospital worker was killed on the job here. staff member donna gross was allegedly strangled by a patient at the hospital. back out here live just 15 minutes ago i spoke to napa state hospital workers that pulled up. you can see there is a police vehicle parked here right at the guard gate. we are not allowed past where that guard gate is. when i talked to the officers i put in a request with them to speak with napa state hospital police chief to talk a little bit more about the investigation into this latest
