[ inaudible audio ] >> ktvu's rob roth has been at sfo all day and he joins us live with what happened on board that flight. >> reporter: the passenger is expected to make his first appearance in court in san francisco tomorrow morning. >> reporter: this is rageh almurisi after his arrest. the fbi is charging him with interfering with a flight crew. rageh almurisi was on american airlines flight 1561 from chicago. about a half hour before landing at sfo rageh almurisi got out of his seat and walked to the cockpit door. rageh almurisi then lowered his shoulder and rammed the door. rageh almurisi kept yelling and pushing forward.

a fight attendant tried to restrain him and then passengers helped. rageh almurisi attempted to break free and return to the cockpit door. >> they were able to subdue that passenger, place him on the ground and use the handcuffs the flight attendants have. they were able to put them on behind his back. >> reporter: passengers reported rageh almurisi shouted god and great but police wouldn't confirm that. rageh almurisi has a passport from yemen -- yemen. a spokesman says at no time was the door in any danger of being breached. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. we found a cousin of rageh almurisi here in the bay area. he once lived in vallejo.

the relative told us rageh almurisi worked as a math teacher in yemen and came to the united states in search of a better salary. rageh almurisi liked to get into debates and win them. he says while he may be strong willed it doesn't make him a criminal. >> he is not terrorist. maybe they misunderstand him. >> the cousin told us he hasn't heard from rageh almurisi for several months. it came one week after osama bin laden's death. ktvu's john fowler went inside the cockpit of a 747 to show us what we gained and loss since 9/11. >> reporter: security is supposed to be the same on every flight. and passengers told us, it's unthinkable anybody would rush

the cockpits these days. >> safe on the ground. >> reporter: what was it like for pilots last night, a passenger yelling in arabic, ramming the door, a week after the death of osama bin laden? he showed us this cockpit. >> the faa required airlines improve cockpit safety. adding bullet proof material to the cockpit door and two kinds of locks so no one could get in the cockpit again. >> it makes me feel better. terrified because he is there, but better. >> most of the time the flight is not in jeopardy. >> what is in jeopardy is connecting with passengers. many pilots miss those visits. >> there is that personal contact with the public that

you don't have. and i think -- i think you lose the prestige. >> reporter: still the trade off for security is a good one. we visited museums, working cockpits remain guarded even on the ground. a man is in custody after trying to open an exit door on a continental airlines flight. passengers stopped him and the pilot landed safely in st. louis. the man is now being questioned by the fbi. another incident yesterday, authorities don't know where a threatening note on a delta flight came from. it was diverted to alba quirky with a note with the word bomb was found in the rest rooms. www.ktvu.com has more on

the security scares, including video of the arrest of the man who rammed the cockpit on american airlines flight 1561. a police stand off in san francisco ended today with the surrender of an armed man. a s.w.a.t. team surouned the house about 11:45. they were responding to a 911 call. a man was rushed to a hospital. the suspected barricaded himself inside the house for 2 hours. a police negotiator talked him out of the hoswithout incident. pg&e is pressure testing its pipelines. a mile and a half long pipe is being filled with water so pressure gages can identify

leaks. >> any section of pipe that doesn't meet our standards will be replaced with new pipe. >> it is expected to take two weeks. another test will be done next week in antioch to prepare for the tests, crews began venting gas from that line. bay area home prices are sinking after a rebound last spring. we looked at the three bay area regions. the average value of a home in san francisco is $467,000. that's down 10% from last year. the san jose area came in with the highest but it's also dropping. vallejo, the least expensive housing in the bay area saw a decline of 8%. buying a house could be more challenging if they move forward with a new proposal. they are considering whether to require homeowners to make a

town payment of 20% before they buy. based on the average price of house you would need about $93,000 cash. teachers are trying to push the legislator to extend temporary tax increases. the teachers say huge budget cuts loom if the cuts aren't extended. >> we are here today and we will be here the entire week to tell our legislators they must extend the temporary taxes that californians are already paying to protect schools and other services. >> dozens of teachers made their way inside the capital looking to talk to lawmakers. san francisco is one of the hundreds of school districts across the state feeling the pinch. ktvu's david stevenson talked with teachers and parents about what students stand to lose.

david? >> reporter: about 75 of those teachers you saw in sacramento departmented from the state building this morning. some of the hundreds that stayed behind told us it's a job that is becoming harder and harder each day. >> reporter: in san francisco teachers told us the joy of their jobs is undermined by overcrowded and under funded class rooms. >> to have 15-year-old computers and say we can't even afford pencils. >> reporter: even as san francisco teachers rally this week, the school district is preparing to chop $84 million. one year after administrators cut $113 million from a $500,000 budget. >> i have in in the business for 36 years and this is the worst it's been. >> reporter: thevent says at $6,000 per student, california will spend less on students

than any other state. that will mean lay offs and a shorter school days. >> you know, we are running out of things to cut. >> i am concerned he won't be able to get the one-on-one, you know, teaching or education that we used to get. >> reporter: parents say legislators should look elsewhere. >> stop making these cuts. cut something else. add more money to the schools. >> one field trip. you know what i mean? not having school buses. >> reporter: some teachers are displaying pink slip posters outside of class rooms as a reminder of the teachers who may lose their jobs. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a bill calling for tougher academic standards for charter schools is making its way through the legislators. the bill raises the

expectations for all schools in the state. if passed it would require schools that don't meet their goals to go before a hearing. >> there is all sorts of things going on. but if there is one area we need to get stronger in, there are too many underperforming schools. >> the committee approved the bill last week. fast food restaurants are fighting to keep laws like the happy meal ordinance from spreading. san francisco is the first to require children's meals meet standards before they sell with toys. in arizona state law goes into effect in july. a similar law is in the works in florida. >> a bill approved by the

. the book that tells jaycee dugard story is almost ready to be released. they said the memoir of her kidnapping will go on sale july 12. it will cover her hid napping and the 18 years she spent with phillip garrido and nancy garrido. both of whom who confessed. the attack at napa state hospital. today we obtained an e-mail sent to the staff that reads no major injuries reported, no hospitalizations reported and no staff had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. >> i believe he was hit in the head to the point of vomiting. >> ktvu's john sasaki spoke with hospital officials, they told him the patient was not arrested. this is the latest of violent

incident in the hospital. arson investigators are looking into a fire. the fire started around 11:30 last night. no one was at the home at the time. neighbors say the homeowners have been having domestic problems. someone removed kitchen appliances from the home on saturday. a rattlesnake warning going attitude after several dogs were bitten. ktvu's patty l is live with the action that public health and fire officials are preparing to take tonight. >> reporter: wee at a pet clinic where a dog that was bitten will be held in this room for observation. because of a wave of incidents this clinic ran out of the venom serum. >> all of this red here is abnormal. >> reporter: she is treating

two dogs for rattlesnake bites. bitten saturday afternoon, she needs a new catheter and a iv drip. lucy, bitten thursday is on the road to recovery. >> this is the first time in the eight years i have owned this hospital we have seen any bites, let alone multiple bites. this may be leading us down the road we will have a big rattlesnake season. >> reporter: calfire says it is drafting a public warning about rattlesnakes. choline says she knew rattle snacks lived at the park where she walks her dogs. >> they close that park down because of rattler sitings. >> reporter: kim says her dog was bitten in her backyard. >> on the nose right here and

play begins june 28 against north cra in germany. i thought the shirks were -- sharks were going to the finals. >> in all the years, that's got to be one of the most heart breaking defeats. in the 3rd period, every game decided by one goal. last night the sharks led 3-1 before the red wings. they just never give up. swarming the net, and they wind up with a 1 goal victory and the sharks 3-0 lead suddenly at 3-2 and, of course, as the sharks get ready for the next game, the question is, are they feeling a little tight. >> we are trying to get to four wins. anyway you do it is, you know, satisfying but we are not there yet. so, yeah, we are going into their building. we just played two games there, we know what to expect. we are not backing down.
