today. good morning, thank you for waking up with us on this wednesday, may 11th i'm pam cook. the weather feels much cooler this morning. hi steve. pam, you are correct. it is a rip roaring sea breeze and low clouds and fog which touched the coast yesterday are roaring inland. it will be a very cool day for some. 50s even in san francisco. very low 60s for many. i did go with a couple 70s. we will drop a good ten degrees for many. here is sal. traffic right now on website 24 looks pretty good driving up to the tunnel looks pretty good. this mornings commute is okay on northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. let's go back to the desk. we begin with tragedy at san jose state. three people are dead in a shooting inside a campus parking garage. ktvu kraig debro has new information from the university.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this took place at tenth and san fernando in a parking garage. you won't be able to tell right now it's on the fifth floor so up near the top. i walked up there to see what is going on. there is a patrol car. a san jose state university patrol car and a silver tarp on the ground covering what the officer told me was a bio hazard. there is a lot going on. san jose tweeting saying they will have counselors on hand. the garage will be opened as planned today. this happened around 8:30 last night. according to what we know from san jose state police as well as witnesses, multiple shots were fired. two people died at scene. a third person was transferred to a local hospital. it's -- it's not clear who those people are. they tole me that san jose police are now in charge of the

investigation. the state university system released this police department does not have operatable or homicide investigations that are capable looking into this. we talked to several witnesses last night. one was close enough to hear the gunfire. >> we were in our living room when we heard gunshots. you hear cars screeching and stuff. and then that's all we heard until police came. >> reporter: we don't have much on the investigation from police at this hour. we did hear last night from am spokesperson from san jose university this shooting was not random. whatever happened that statement seemed to be the purpose of that seemed to be lay fears on people of the neighborhood. perhaps there is a gunman out there shooting people. that is not the case. coming up we will have more.

we will try to go up there and video tape it so you can see it as well. i'm also trying to contact the san jose police to get the latest information on the investigation into the three killings which are being investigated as homicides. reporting live kraig debro ktvu channel 2 new avenue news. the church is on for a suspected -- the search is on for a suspected killer. this is the 19-year-old suspect that antioch police believe that was on campus yesterday. he's accused of shooting and killing another man on december 20th. he has tattoos on the back of his hands and neck and a goatee. he's considered armed and dangerous. police plan to continue their search later this morning. it's official, the mount dyeable school board -- diablo school board decided to hire

back employees. that depends on what kind of state funding they receive. two school principals and veteran teachers are among those losing their jobs. >> some of the teachers that got laid off have 10-12 years experience. >> also last night bay area teachers held what they call a grade in at local malls as part of a week of action. they say they want to show their jobs continue long after the school bell rings. california state university students could face another tuition hike. csu leaders warn the increase warn fees may unavoidable. that would tuition to $6500 a year. the new increases would be on top in addition to a 10% increase approved last november. new this morning the trial of two uc berkeley students was

stalled. they were not brought to the courtroom from the prison where they are being held. there was until explanation given for them not being there. they face charges of illegal entry and spying. sarah shourd is also charged but says she will not return for the trial. the the stage is set for the next trial in the bart case. yesterday a judge ruled the family of oscar grant and fellow riders can proceed with their $50 million lawsuit. the suit claims police used excessive force and made illegal arrests at the fruitvale station on new years day 2009. now the civil lawsuit names former bart police officer johan necessary mehserle. he has spent the last ten

months behind bars. he is scheduled to be released this summer. overnight crews in napa work to repair a water main break. 36-inch transmission line at foster road failed at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. the lines feed the city of napa. crews stopped the leak around 6:00 last night and began repair work. a backup treatment plant was brought online and delivering water into napa. people may continue to notice water that looks more like tea and low water pressure. >> i couldn't even take a shower. it was coming out brown. it was kind of funny. it reminded me of the earthquake. >> the water is safe to drink but you should allow it to run until it becomes clear. 4:37 is the time. let's get a complete look at

the commute this morning. >> things are doing well around the bay area. there are no major problems if you are driving on 80 westbound it looks good all the way out to the mccarthur maze. no major problems driving there. the morning commute is looking nice if you are driving to the bay bridge toll plaza. that traffic looks good all the way into san francisco. the morning drive on northbound 280 is off to a nice start and no problems on highway 17. 4:37 let's go to steve. sal does it feel like summer in the city? >> yes, it does. >> a lot of low clouds and fog. when you see that fog, i mean, just roar in like that with not a lot of help, that is a sure sign that temperatures will take a plunge today. we do have a low cloud bank that is moving locally inland. in fact san jose has cloudy skies. fog and wind inland sun today. it will be cooler for everybody. tomorrow will there be some fog but it will be slightly warmer.

the weekend still advertising a cloudy to mostly cloudy pattern. system that is coming in right now all it takes is a weak cold front to pick that fog bank back up and send it on its way. we will have a mostly cloudy day by the coast. 40s and 50s. west, southwest fairfield 21. vacaville south, southwest. concord south at 15. that is a big-time cool direction. oakland west at 12. sfo at west at 10. gusts to 21. everything is in place for significantly cooler weather. system moving in there. the big news will be the low that will drop down out of the gulf of alaska. that is setting up for what looks to be a really cool weekend and possible rain sat evening. temperatures will plunge and be well below normal.

so i know sunday is beta breakers. low clouds cooler windy. gusts to 30. inland sun but temperatures will come down. 60s and a few very low 70s. we will see a slightly warmer pattern. we go back to cool again and mostly cloudy. santa clara county is cracking down on owners of dangerous dogs following a series of attacks. just last month a pair of dogs attacked don wilson and her husky. her dog had to be euthanized. they gave approval for ordnances. under the policy it will be easier to declare a dog potentially dangerous. it will also increase the amount of liability insurance for owners of potentially dangerous dogs. another scare in the air.

coast and bay for many. there will be inland sun but much cooler today. the mississippi river is still rising and so is the cost of the damage. in memphis the flood damage is estimated at more than $320 million. now 19 casinos along the river will be shut down by the end of the week. that closure will cost local governments up to $13 million per month in tax revenues. the river has washed away crops and forced hundreds of people to evacuate. an investigation is under way into what went wrong with a southwest flight that made an emergency landing in oklahoma city late last night. it was on its way from kansas city to dallas when the crew noticed a problem with the windshield heating function. the airline says the pilot made the emergency landing and switched planes as a precaution. there were 50 people on board.

one man is in custody after trying to open up an emergency door mid flight. flight attendants were able to get limb to the back of the -- get him to the back of the plane. they arrested him when he landed in boston. he faces charges of interfering with a flight crew. prosecutors also note that al -- another story. the vallejo man storming the cockpit of a san francisco jet is due back in court for a bail hearing. yesterday the judge ordered 28- year-old remain behind bars for now. he is a danger to the community and a flight risk. the retired san mateo police officer credited with stopping him also believes he's a very dangerous man. >> i felt like he was trying to take on the flight crew and possibly crash the airplane.

>> prosecutors also note that al had no no luggage or cell phone during the flight and his realtives here in california did not know he was coming. at the same time investigators say he has no known links to any terrorists groups. more than a week after the death of osama bin laden it's still not clear who will replace him as the leader of al qaeda. he is considered the most likely candidate but not that popular with many members of al qaeda. al qaeda has a bigger problem. the recent uprising in the middle east. the young people involved in the protests are demanding western style democracy. not a fundamentalist muslim government. the first load of nonlethal

living apart while working on their relationship. a memorial service will be held today for the mayor of syncarpless who died suddenly of a heart attack. 46-year-old omar presided over city council meeting last night in the 10:30 last night. he seemed to be his usual upbeat and energetic self-. but yesterday morning he called 911 complaining of chest pains. he died in the ambulance from a heart attack. >> he just brought optimism. >> he was electricked to the san carlos city council in 2007 and chosen by his colleagues for the mayor's post in november. he was the only second muslim to become mayor. the council will then select an interim mayor. the coroner has released the results of an autopsy of

the victims of the murder suicide in fairfield. one of the victims brittany quinn was shot multiple times. he also shot and killed his roommate. another man that lived in the home was shot in the foot but survived. quinn andizen burg were in a relationship but broke up two years ago. the family of one of two men in san jose killed over the past weekend say they think they know what lead to the homicide. the mother of antonio vilosco two men were told to leave a party early saturday morning near mount pleasant high school and then one came back with a gun. the 30-year-old vilasco were shot and killed. another person was injured. san jose police will not

confirm a motive and they have not named a suspect. livermore police are looking for a man that waits for women that are jogging alone and pulls down their pants and runs away. this is near the patterson pass. none of the women have been hurt or sexually assaulted but the man could face assault, battery or molestation charges. well we have heard of many in recent years. how the mega quakes in distant countries could effect faultlines here in the bay area. the new safety measures being asked for in the wake of a tragic accident in san francisco.

news. large earthquakes like this one could have more of an effect on fault lines here in the bay area than scientists previously thought. a new study shows the past major quakes caused parts of the fault to slip setting off some small tremors. there is no evidence that they will cause major quakes here in the bay area. the earthquake in japan was not included in the study. this morning toyota has some very disappointing news about earnings. profits dropped more than 70%. it looks like the japanese quake definitely hit the company hard. again there are earnings their profit dropping 77% on that. the world's largest auto maker says it should be back to full production levels by the end of november. the earthquake and tsunami that hit japan last march disrupted parts suppliers so badly that

some factories had to be shut down for weeks. the house of represent i haves could vote today on a proposal to drill for oil. the republican sponsored bill would also open up oil drilling along the gulf and east coast. it's intended to double offshore oil drilling in the next 16 years. environmentalists say even if the bill passes the house it's unlikely that the democrat controlled senate would approve it. carnival rides have been fined $500 for an accident last summer. it happened on the wacky worm children's ride. a worker stepped in front of the ride and his leg was severed below the knee. no one else was hurt. cal osha says because they did not provide adequate training. a vigil will be held today for a man that was killed in a hit and run accident.

the 61-year-old man was hit by a 23-year-old suspected drunk driver. after today's vigil, there will be a discussion on how to improve safety in the area. some of the ideas include installing a red light camera system and increasing police patrols. city transportation officials will hold a meeting on the issue on friday. it's coming up on 5:00. let's go back to sal. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good. traffic is moving along pretty well on westbound 24. also the morning commute is moving well if you are drive into the city along the bay bridge with no major issues. lower deck construction still picking up and north and southbound 880 moving along nicely. we do have a cooler pattern today. weak front move into the north. that means temperatures will come down. that will drop coastal temperatures hugging the 50s and 60s inland. very low 70s. the fog bank and a west,
