>> we're resilient too, there's always another year burden of >> reporter: but you have your new jersey t-shirt so they will win. >> yes, we will win. >> reporter: go sharks. coming up in sports, fred inglis live at the shark tank where he spoke to players about what they have to do to win this do or die game. police discovered the body along lafayette street at about 6:00 this morning after someone called to report a man bleeding on the ground. investigators blocked off the area. a man who works in the area told ktvu news the victim lives in the neighborhood. >> goes over to rotten robby to get a cup of coffee every morning and returns back to his house. police haven't released the man's name but describe him as a 62-year-old latino man. there is no word on what caused his death. we have new details tonight

on that murder suicide at san jose. michelle callgeron and thomas kyle williams were studying accounting. he was shot to death by mccrory's husband napoleon callgeron. >> we knew, somebody would walk her to that parking and kyle was walking her that time. so it was always someone next to her. >> reporter: the university says there was no record of domestic violence or a criminal record. the motive is still unclear. the san francisco police department is saying thank you to a man who helped pin down the suspect in a vicious attack at fisherman's wharf. the department honored security guard bryan jones with a certificate of appreciation today. police say jones detained the suspect who grabbed an 84-year- old man by the neck and threw

him to the ground earlier this month apparently while practicing some kind of martial arts. the victim is now in the hospital and recovering. four oakland fire stations fate hangs in the balance tonight. mike mibach is live where one of those stations could become a victim of a worse case scenario. >> reporter: we were down there and decided to come down to downtown oakland because that big budget meeting just got going. right now it is taking place inside council chambers. on the table for discussion city jobs from police to public works as well as the possible closure of certain fire houses. four of them and as one councilwoman told me, lives are literally at stake in this next fiscal budget. oakland fire on the move protecting lives, protecting homes. >> great to have it right there. >> reporter: jeff belan is talking about station seven located doors down from his

family house. his home and hundreds of others near by burned down during the 1979 fire. >> it gives everyone around here a sense of security, it would be a shame to see it go. >> reporter: major quan who is still visiting china has offered three different proposals. closures of seven stations, with personnel and equipment being reassigned to other houses. in the second of three workshops, the city council will debate the major's budget. >> we are being told that we need to cut $58 million. >> reporter: councilwoman brunner says that this debate is going to heat up in the next coming weeks. >> for someone who's having a heart attack, if you don't get to them in the first seven minutes they will not survive. >> reporter: if they do not have a medical response team it can take 14 minutes to get to some of the areas in the hills. >> reporter: closing the four

stations according to the mayor's proposal would save an estimated $300,000 a year. the president of the local 55 told me it is just too early to comment at this time saying it is a wait and see game. live here in downtown oakland, mike mibach, ktvu news. republicans are meeting democrats challenge to present a solution to the budget crisis. gop is leading a roadblock for negotiations. it does not include any tax increases to resolve the budget deficit. instead it asks state workers to take a 10% pay cut. >> when you don't tax people they have an opportunity to make more and spend more. the path way we're providing we think will stimulate the economy even more. >> if today's proposal is any indication that it may spare dozens of teachers who's jobs

into that construction site. crews are making a tunnel right through that rock. it's not for cars but for water. the digging started just a few months ago a machine with hardened teeth started making its way into a mountain. today the new irvington tunnel is taking shape. project manager michael cash says the machine and his crews dig and blast their way 60 feet every day. >> we keep that rate up, another year and a half and the tunnel will be done. >> reporter: this new tunnel is next to the old irvington tunnel built in the late 1920s. it's old, made of mortar and not seismically sound. >> it's within feet of an active fault. it's crucial for us to deliver drinking water to 2.5 million people in four bay area

counties? >> reporter: betsy rose says this construction is a race with time. part of a $4.6 billion overhall of the entire hetchi water system. >> it's like doing repairs to an airplane while in flight. >> reporter: after crews digging from both sides meet under the mountain, the system will be open. >> i guess it'll be a great day. two crews tunneling from both sides, coming together with their machines and shaking hands with each other. >> reporter: for security reasons, we were asked not to tell our exact location. the water main ruptured on tuesday. an estimated 1 million of gallons spilled before the leak was stopped within two hours.

two 15-foot segment of the concrete pipe were replaced. the pipe was installed in 1948. a congested bay area commute could be getting better. caltrans is planning more car pool lanes on interstate 680. the agency allocated $10 million today to construct the lanes between milpedas and highway 82 in sonol. no word yet on when construction will begin. hundreds of bay area commuters today decided that two wheels may be better than four. it's the 17th annual bike to workday. energizer stations were set up at strategic spots to provide refreshments and cycling information. organizers hoped that the folks who road to work today for the first time will continue doing it all yearlong. the economic downturn is resulting in more empty homes in california. the u.s. census bureau says the vacancy rate in homes increased to 2.1% in 2010. rental vacancies shot up to 6.3%. the average household size also

increased. experts say californians are leaving the state for jobs or moving in with family and friends to ride out the housing crisis. in san francisco renting may not be such a financial burden after all. high rents are offset by well paying jobs. the study found that 70% of san francisco renters make enough to cover their housing cost without being a financial burden. where as in miami it's only 66%. gasoline prices are coming way down, the question is has the psychological damage already been done for the summer vacation driving season? and i'm back here in less than ten minutes, i'm going to give you a forecast that will have you running for the jackets and the umbrellas this weekend.

another brutal attack inside napa state hospital. this time it was a patient beating an elderly patient. patients and staff called ktvu when they say this man, victor monohano attacked a frail man in his 60s last night. the beating comes just days after a staff member was attacked by another patient. hospital employees we spoke with say there have been changes in security, but that more needs to be done to prevent violent attacks inside that mental hospital. anti spoking activists are working to raise california's state tax. they look to increase the tax by $1 a pack. and raising the tax could save the state $28 billion in health care costs over the next five years. medical marijuana patients in the city of south san francisco will have to go elsewhere to get their marijuana. the city council voted last

night to ban medical marijuana dispensaries in that city. the council could have enacted regulations on clubs instead. the decision keeps in place the moratorium that was established back in 2006. senate democrats grilled oil executives. chevron defended their industry. >> it's wrong to increase taxes to subsidize other forms of transportation. don't punish us for doing well. >> conoco phillips ceo said raising taxes would lead to higher prices at the pump. the price at the pump is on everybody's mind as we head to memorial day weekend. bay area prices peaked at the

down. >> everyone if prices go down. i can't afford it. >> reporter: rv owner marcus hannagan pays for the big gulps. >> it's really not going to deter that many people. if they want to take that trip, i don't think that amount of money is going to stop them. >> reporter: assume an average price of $4.18 for regular in a car that gets 21 miles a gallon. you will pay $341 for gas, for every dime a dollar difference, you pay a $10 difference, less if it drops a dime. a year ago you would have paid $282, $102 $102 less than today. >> i am glad to see them going down, i hope they go down a lot more. >> reporter: any disruption at all could make these lower prices do an immediate u turn for the worse.

have been more clear about hiring the pr firm. the lab offers computer classes and help looking for jobs. >> i can see that craigslist is really useful for job search, but also it's pretty good for basics. sometimes it puts food on the table. you have to sell some stuff. >> reporter: the lab is also open to low income families. the university of san francisco donated the computers and is supplying volunteers. it was a beautiful day around the bay area today. it's almost hard to think that it's supposed to turn so ugly for the weekend. let's go to bill martin for the latest. >> it's not bad weather but we've been used to good weather for the last week or so. and this weekend is going to be sketchy especially saturday into sunday. snow levels will be kind of low. the overnight we're looking for

fog to reform at the coast. breezy it's that way out there right now. friday looks good. nice day on friday. the weekend no major cooling. last week at this time we had 80s and 90s. not this week but this weekend we're looking at temperature drops 20 to 30 degrees as we're in the 50s and low 60s. showers return, especially saturday night into sunday morning and then scattered showers sunday afternoon. i will break that out in a minute. overnight lows cool tonight. low 40s, mid-40s, chilly. coastal fog, you wake up saturday increasing clouds all day. saturday starts off not so bad. then cloudy, not so wet though. i think you can get stuff done on saturday. in the north bay probably about 6:00, 9:00 p.m. around san jose. then get into sunday, the front goes through, the rain overnight maybe .1 of an inch. not a lot. then this cold air settles in. it filters into the bay area. you wake up sunday morning and say, what is bill talking about

it's beautiful out here. then some where around 10:00 you look to the east and you see scattered clouds. sun is going to be one of those crazy weather days. we could see a thundershower. you may get sunny all day. ten miles down the road there might be a big thunderstorms and big downpour. the main rain event is overnight on saturday. so we're going to be sleeping most of us. but it'll be cool on saturday. so here's the frontal bend saturday night. there's the rain. there's the front. here comes the cold air now behind the front. now it's sitting right over us, this is sunday afternoon and you're getting this. the best places to be the driest places are right along the coast. sunday is beta breaker. beta breakers will be dry because by the time people get done at noon, people will get dry and partly cloudy. we will look at the latest computer models, but basically that's the general idea.
