them teachers, we have one here that is carrying a sign will work for pencils. this rally began about two hours ago. let's take a look from chopper 2. right now we can see hundreds, probably 1,500 parents, teachers, students from throughout the bay area still here, still demonstrating against proposed budget cuts to state education. they are urging citizens to get angry and take action. this has been a peaceful protest, no civil disobedience, folks here there's a lot on the line, they say proposed budget cuts will devastate public education in every school district in the state. it means there are more students in my class. and less people to help me. so you know professionals are being laid off, we have students that need a lot of help. >> it feels like we're going to a path that doesn't have public education. it's very scary, very daunting. where will we end up if we keep

cutting education. >> reporter: the demonstration is still going strong. educators from san francisco, art and music could be eliminated. versus high school students and college professors are being eliminated. folks here say it's now up to state lawmakers. reporting live at san francisco, rob roth ktvu channel 2 news. and in sa sacramento right now, thousands of teachers across the state are rallying in the steps of the state capital. and twice teachers have been arrested at the capital. ken pritchett is live there, ken any arrests tonight. >> reporter: i haven't heard of any arrests, those events that there were people arrested, they went into the capital, stayed after hours intending to be arrested. here they are at the state of

the capitals. the pta is making up about 1,500 teachers teachers, parents and students. now this event here is winding downright about now. here is what it looked like about 30 minutes ago. the rally is targeted at lawmakers most of whom were not here today. teachers say they lost 40,000 jobs and they will lose more jobs if the state does not come up with a deal. k-12 education was largely spared when lawmakers passed a budget in march. but negotiations over taxes stalled. and now with an all cuts taxes with no new revenue, that will bring deeper cuts to education.

>> that's our worse nightmare. again, both the democratics and republicans have to come together. it can't be an either or. and they need to find a way to be able to say okay we can give a little, we can take a little. >> reporter: governor brown will reveal his revised may budget monday morning: it is then that we will have a better idea, a better road map for what cuts education might face and what cuts there may be to other state services. also next week the school districts are planning to finalize their plans on how many teachers will be laid off. in sacramento, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. california today released the list of state parks set to close to help save money. in all 70 state parks will be closed because of budget cuts, 16 of those parks are in the bay area. china camp in san rafael is among the parks that will be closed and today park workers were maintaining the land. but come september that will all change. visitors today told ktvu the burden needs to be shared to

help keep the parks open. >> we need to tax everybody, in order to maintain things that are valuable to us like this park is. >> the state is hoping to avoid lay offs by reassigning employees from closed parks to ones that are staying open. since our park report at 5:00, we received this statement from governor brown on the park closures. he says closing state parks is not a task that gives anyone joy but we are experiencing turbulent times that necessitate almost unthinkable cuts to social services. governor brown is expected to call for the elimination of the unemployment insurance appeals board. the $128,000 a year seats on the board are often given to former politicians. analysts say the move would be mostly symbolic saving just $1.2 million out of a $15 billion deficit. just a few hours ago, major

chuck reed called on the city to declare a fiscal emergency. public employee units are not willing to do enough to reduce cuts. he will ask the council to vote to put pension reform before voters in november. firefighters, police and other unions have already agreed to 10% pay cuts but the mayor says that's not enough. a city audit finds that san jose's promised pensions will be $2 billion short in the coming years. in just the last half hour, firefighters have contained a fire in san francisco's mission district it sent flames and smoke billowing in the air. jana katsuyama live on the scene now where roads in that area are still closed off. >> reporter: that's right frank, and they probably will be for a while according to fire officials . you can see past this yellow tape they were able to see past where the fire chief was stationed right there by that ladder truck. we understand now that there were three house that is were

affected by this fire. it started at a three story victorian house. as i mentioned earlier, we pulled up right when the third engine arrived here on scene. the call came in around 4:15. it started on cap street in a three story building then fire officials say it spread to a house next door and another one behind it. now the good thing is, fire officials say all the residents got out safely. we did speak to one man who was very relegalled to come home from -- was very relieved to come home and saw that his father and pets got out. >> i came home and my dad had gotten out. he saw smoke from the upstairs unit, from the unit next door. and i went in and opened the door and i was calling for my dog. >> reporter: back here live you can see that ladder truck going up to the house right next to where the fire started. they say that they are still trying to make sure that all of the hot spots are out. it started in the attic. you can see by the tape and the

youshock is accused of setting pipe bombs in an alleged plot to kill teachers who had given him bad grades. operation spring cleaning is targeting 68 people believed to be driving a spike in violent crime. 36 of them have been arrested. chief bat says more residents are ignoring the no snitching rule which he says does not apply to those causing the violence. >> career criminals, that doesn't come to fruition. they tell on their mother, their grandfathers and grandmothers. but they go out to the community and they put out this methodology of no snitching. a tentative plan was approved today to make one of san francisco's busiest avenues safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. the masonic masonic corridor has been the scene of a lot of

highway 146. the fire has burned 148 acres and is currently 85% contained. authorities tell ktvu full containment isn't expected any time soon. some structured had been threatened but there are no reports of damage so far. this sunday is the 100th running of beta breakers. ed lee proclaimed this beta breakers weekend. he expects 100,000 people to either run or watch the race. light rain is expected during the early morning event. the city implemented new rules banning alcohol and floats from the course. ktvu.com has everything you need to know about beta breakers. you will find rules and the map of the route. our chief meteorologist bill martin has been watching the weather for the weekend and beta breakers. let's go to the weather center. >> if you are one of those 150,000 people attending we also have wind coming up as
