live this morning to florida. we're about an hour and a half away from the second to last shuttle launch ever. the billion dollar package the crew will deliver in space. it's all ahead here on the ktvu morning news. good morning. thank you for joining us. it's monday may 16th. i'm pam cook. feels pretty cold outside this morning. are we going to see some rain? let's check in with steve paulson for the forecast. all right. pam, thank you. yes, the calendar on the wall says may but looks and feels like march and that beat will continue. yesterday was more showery in nature and kind of cold. but today we will have cloudy skies, rain developing, already some up towards the north bay. this will be a bone fewed front. talk about that coming up later. here's sal. steve, good morning. right now traffic on the golden gate bridge looks good heading to the toll plaza. no major problems. avoid high schoolen market in san francisco for some police activity. northbound 101 approaching the 80 split that traffic looks good. 4:31 back to pam. thank you, sal. topping our news this morning injured san francisco giants fan bryan stow is scheduled to return home to the bay area today. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us now from san francisco general hospital to tell us what's next in his long road to recovery.

allie. >> reporter: well, pam, bryan stow remains in critical condition. he is still unconscious. so when he is brought here to san francisco general later today, hospital spokespersons say the first order of business will be to give him immediate and acute medical treatment. the same kind of treatment he was receiving in los angeles for the past six weeks. the only difference is now he will be receiving that care a lot closer to his family here in the bay area. it was six weeks ago when stow was severely beaten outside dodgers stadium after attending a giants versus dodgers game. ktvu spoke with his family at the grand prix last night where vendors were selling t-shirts and hats for the family. the family says they are not resentful towards dodgers fans or the city of los angeles. in fact the family says they are very grateful for the medical care he received in southern california. >> we had to leave l.a. who's been amazing to us. but we get to come home. and we get to bring bryan home. so it was bittersweet. >> reporter: and stow is

scheduled to be transferred by medical jet from l.a.x. to sfo today. hospital spokesperson say they don't know yet exactly when today that flight is supposed to get in. we'll continue to check with them throughout the morning. we're also hearing reports that los angeles police have made progress in the search for suspects responsible for beating and injuring stow. we're working on trying to get more information on that and we will bring you updates later this morning. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. a 30-year-old man is fighting for his life this morning after falling off of a roof while watching the bay to breakers race. police say the man fell 30 feet from the roof of a house on fill street near lion street. officers shut down the party at the house but rowdy crowds continued to hang out in that area for several hours. san francisco police say 17 people were arrested for public intoxication yesterday. three people were arrested for assault. and four arrested for burglary. numerous others were pulled out of the race route and confined

to tenth where they were required to stay until they sobered up. now there were some serious runners among all the partyers at the bay to breakers. coming up in just about 18 minutes how the end of the race was different than it has been in the past 20 years. right now the countdown for the space shuttle's launch is in its final hours. this is endevour's final space mission. liftoff is scheduled for just about 90 minutes from now. we're taking live pictures now. take you to florida to show you what's going on as they prepare for the launch. forecasters say there's a 70% chance of acceptable weather at launch time. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is there in florida to watch the launch. her husband, mark kelly, is the commander for this mission. only one more shuttle launch is scheduled after endevour. we want to show you new video we received from overnight of the crew suiting up for the launch. six man crew will deliver a $2 billion piece of equipment to

the international space station. they will also conduct four space walks on that 16 day mission. look like they're ready. starting today pg&e will begin high pressure pipeline testing near the antirock bridge. a similar test took place last week in mountain view. that's where pg&e filled a mile and a half long pipeline with more than 100,000 gallons of water. now monitoring crews then looked at pressure gauges to figure out if that pipeline had any leaks. pg&e is doing these tests in response to last september's san bruno pipeline explosion. the california public utilities commission is holding a public hearing today in santa rosa as part of its efforts to revise safety rules following that explosion in san bruno. that hearing is scheduled from 4:00 to 7:00 tonight in the dohn room at the steele lane community center in santa rosa. the agency wants public input on how the commission should ensure the transmission lines

are safe. other meetings have been held in san bruno and los angeles. well, we spoke to san francisco police this morning. and they are still looking for those responsible for a deadly gang shootout in the city isobornyl heights neighborhood. two people were killed. a third person wounded outside a housing project on appleton avenue saturday evening. now witnesses say that the deadly shooting followed a brawl between two rival street gangs. >> our guys that live here were taking off their jackets getting ready to fight. >> investigators say that first fight quickly escalated into deadly gunfire. police have increased patrols in the neighborhood fearing retaliation. san francisco police hope surveillance video will help their investigation into the killing of a 74-year-old man. take a look at that video. police say the man seen in that video purchased items at a bay

area target store with funds from the 74-year-old victim, joseph william's bank account. williams' family found him dead last week inside his fulsome street apartment. police say they have the man on camera withdrawing william's money from a bank an atm and they're calling him a person of interest in this homicide. governor jerry brown will release his revised budget proposal at 11:00 this morning. he's expected to continue to call for extending higher vehicle, sales and personal income taxes. republican lawmakers say tax extensions are unnecessary because incoming revenue is better than expected. but the governor's finance director calls the revenue bump slight and says it does not cover the state's $15.4 billion shortfall. stage two of the am amgen tour starts today. officials canceled the 118-mile circuit around lake tahoe

yesterday because of snow and ice. take a look at that. does not look like may up there. now stage two is set to take off at 10:15 this morning. that's from squaw valley. it's going to end in sacramento. questions remain about the race. that route takes cyclists over the pass which closed over the weekend because of that weather. the chp says alcohol was a factor in a four-car crash that briefly shut down the golden gate bridge. ktvu news took video of the damaged cars shortly after last night's accident. now investigators say at least four people suffered minor injuries when the cars collided in the middle of the bridge. the crash shut down traffic in both directions for nearly an hour. all lanes were back open at about 9:00 last night. all right. right now it's 4:38. want to go back to sal so check in on traffic on this monday morning. hi, sal. hello, pam. traffic is actually doing okay if you are driving in most areas of the bay. let's go outside and take a look at the commute. the traffic is moving along

pretty well as you drive out toward the east shore freeway. pardon me. east shore freeway traffic looks very nice. there are no major problems. also this morning's commute is moving along welcoming up to the bay bridge toll plaza. there is no major problem there. traffic is moving all right. and this morning's drive if you're in the south bay southbound 280 also northbound 280 traffic moving along nicely. there is word of a new crash southbound 101 at rank store avenue. just came in as we were speaking. they don't know what's going on there. this crash is blocking the middle lane. we will find out a little more. and i think the guys in the control room are putting that map up really quickly. again, southbound 101 at rain store you have avenue running out to a crash. we don't know much about it but it's blocking at least one lane. 4:39 let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. very active may pattern is actually going to kick it in to

a wetter gear believe it or not. we had the power house low swing in yesterday all variety of weather. had some sun, showers, some rain and some breeze and cool temperatures. the next system is racing along bumping it out of here. things have calmed down up in the mountains. 18 at tahoe under partly to mostly cloudy skies and next system will swing in here later on. 40s and 50s for temps. fairfield down to 42. i'm saying that because i hadn't seen that yet. that's a little cool. 40s for many. 50s right there. few light rain showers continue to the north but northeast of that skirting st. helena, cool toga and off to the east. that's a sign of things to come. one system moves out and here comes the next one. this will swing in here. this looks like a decent rain producer. cloudy skies. light rain early. rain will come in this afternoon and evening. and keeping temperatures cool highs today upper 50s low to mid-60s. another very cool day with rain developing. that will be widespread rain. light stuff out ahead of that

good morning. we have cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. very light rain moved up. look for more rain to develop this afternoon and evening. in fact maybe moderate rain at times with over half an inch by tonight. wow. well, hundreds of people in alberta, canada, have been evacuated because of two wild fires there. take a look at that. ten homes and barns have been destroyed in the town. firefighters battling the flames are also dealing with high winds. the state of emergency has now been declared. no injuries have been reported but the wild fires are just two of the several dozen that

started in the province over the weekend. overnight cafe pacific flight taking off from singapore had to make a return emergency landing after an engine caught fire. passengers on board the air bus say about 20 minutes after takeoff that plane began shaking violently. the lights then went out and they could smell something burning. some passengers started praying. now the plane did land safely back in singapore. no one was injured. well, some small towns in louisiana are virtually empty this morning as flood water from the mississippi river approaches. water is coming from the spillway that's been opened to divert water away from heavy populated new orleans and baton rouge. that's left thousands of homes in low lying communities at risk. authorities have warned people in the water's path to clear out. many say it's been a hectic couple of days. >> it's been very busy. the corps been coming back and forth loading sandbags.

a lot of big trucks. people pulling trailers trying to save their belongings. >> louisiana's governor has asked that the federal emergency management agency add another 11 parishes to the 22 parishes that will receive flood assistance. president obama is scheduled to leave in just about an hour to travel to memphis, tennessee, and meet with families displaced by the mississippi river flooding. he will also meet with state and local officials, emergency responders and volunteers. six days after the mississippi river crested in memphis the waterway remains eleven feet above stage level. we're following some breaking news now from london. british police say that they have received a warning of a bomb in london that came from an irish republican disdent group. london police say that the warning did not include a specific location or time, but police say officers were working to tackle the threat. they're urging the public to be

vigilant. again, following breaking news that there may be some sort of bomb threat in london. we're going to try to get more information about that and bring that to you as soon as possible. well, the head of the international monetary fund is due in court today on allegations that he sexually assaulted a new york hotel maid. new video from overnight shows him in handcuffs as police took him to court to await arraignment. the alleged attack happened on saturday at the manhattan hotel. his attorney denies the claims and his wife says she does not believe the accusations. the imf has announced an acting replacement for him who's considered a leading candidate for the french presidency. there's a new push in congress for more sanctions against iran over its nuclear program. new legislation from the white house foreign affairs committee would impose penalties on human rights abusers in iran and on foreign companies that do energy business with iran.

now the u.s. had tried repeatedly to get iran to take part in international talks over its nuclear program. iran insists the program is to generate electricity, not to build nuclear weapons. back here in the bay area this morning vallejo police are looking for the gunman responsible for fatally shooting a 26-year-old man. that shooting happened just after 2:00 yesterday morning right in front of a house at louisiana and cool vera streets. police tell us here at ktvu news that the gunman was seen leaving the shooting in a pickup truck. but the glare from street lights made it difficult to identify the color of that truck. anyone with information is asked to call vallejo police. police in richmond are looking for the person who shot and killed a san francisco man. 24-year-old was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the back of a car at the bay cliff apartments saturday night. he was pronounced dead at the scene. vallejo police are also

investigating racist graffiti left on the building housing a new community radio station. now someone scrawled the n word several times outside the station. station officials believe they were targeted because of the perception that the station caters to an african-american audience despite its diverse staff. the station also changes its music format every three hours. one employee we talked to believes another factor could be responsible. >> we bring up a lot of issues around vallejo that haven't been brought up over the years. and our listening base is getting more and more and more and more stronger because we're a new station. we are talking about things at city council. and i think that this is just a ripple effect of that. >> they plan on holding an open house to invite the community to see what they're all about. an air tran pilot won't be flying any planes while he's investigated for being allegedly impaired while being on the job.

he was removed from his plane on saturday as he prepared to fly from minneapolis to milwaukee. tsa manager smelled alcohol on him at a security check point and called police. a breathalyzer test found that the pilot's blood alcohol level was a .05%, the legal limit for commercial pilots is .04. disney now owns the rights to the name seal team 6 which is the navy commando team credited with killing osama bin laden. now that means the studio holds exclusive rights to the phrase for all movies, games and toys. time magazine reports disney trademarked the name just two days after the bin laden mission. so far the navy is not challenging disney's claim, but the navy has never acknowledged that there even is a seal team 6. a big undertaking in burl gap. why more than 100 patients were moved from their rooms one by one. plus what happened at this year's bay to breakers that hasn't happened in two decades.

welcome back to the morning news. patients in burlingame are waking up at a new hospital this morning. yesterday more than 100 patients were moved down a red carpet from the old to the new hospital right next door. the new hospital is being called the safest in the state. it's built to with stand up to an 8.5 magnitude earthquake. >> be interesting to tell her that she was one of the first patients to have been moved. >> in the next few months the old hospital will be demolished floor by floor. in its place will be a parking lot for the new hospital. the san jose sharks will try to bounce back on wednesday after losing the first game of the western conference finals. sharks got on the board first yesterday, but the vancouver canucks rallied with a pair of

third period goals for a 3-2 win. that loss disappointed the sharks fans who made the trip up to vancouver so see their team. they're still optimistic. >> i think it's our time. we got the experience last year getting to the semifinals. i think it's time to get the cup now. >> game two is wednesday in vancouver. then the series moves back here to san jose on friday. now our own fred i thinkless is there in canada with the sharks. so watch for his reports right here on ktvu channel 2. well, the 100th runs of the bay to breakers saw something that hasn't happened in two decades. the men's winner was not from kenya. he is from mor morocco. a kenyan runner did win the women's race for the third straight time. more than 55,000 runners and walkers participated. many wearing wacky costumes of course or there were the people wearing nothing at all. coming up on 5:00, sal, my

late morning and early afternoon we'll be dealing with rain. this is more of a system we'd see in february or march. some of the highlights today continued cool upper 50s, low to mid-60s at best and if everything continues to march in as advertised about a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain tonight into tomorrow morning. snow level will go up a little bit. this is a warmer system. it's more of a warm rain than it is say a cold one which is what we had on the weekend. 40s and 50s coolest fairfield 42 right at 50 for many including redwood city, mountain view and san jose. light rain towards the north bay and still hanging out around st. helena. can't say i blame it. nice place to hang out. one system moving out. here comes the next one and it's developing. that's the key it's still developing. for the sierra things have calmed down today. 18 in tahoe but another storm warning kicks in at 4:00 p.m. today and goes until 5:00 a.m. wednesday. yes. another six inches of snow to 12 inches of snow level going up around 4500 to 5,000 feet. so it's cloudy.
