morning news. good morning. thank you for waking up with us on this thursday may 19th. i'm pam cook. what is the weather forecast like today? let's check in with steve paulson. hi, steve. >> hi, pam. the fog give it credit it's not forming we haven't had any heat but it's solid on the coast. sunny and warmer after yesterday's system has finally moved out. temperatures 60s and some low to mid-70s. more in about five minutes. here's sal. steve, right now westbound 92 traffic is moving well heading to the high-rise with no major problems. no major problems on interstate 880 here in front of the oakland coliseum it looks good. that's the trend all the way up to downtown oakland. 4:31 back to the desk. topping our news this morning the investigation into a police shooting in oakland. two suspects were critically injured in the overnight gunfire. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us now with exclusive video and details of what led up to this shooting. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. police are still on the scene

here. we are just south of 580 near school street. take a look behind me you can see there is some crime scene tape at the very end of the street there. officers received some inside information last night that violence was about to erupt here. at 9:00 they got the tip on a target vehicle. a light blue van tailed by what they say was the victim's car a red welcomes us. within an hour and a half hey spotted the cars and moved in. gunfire started, two suspects wounded and a third took off. neighbors say they were actually surprised. >> this kind of behavior is shocking. i've been in this neighborhood since the mid-90s. my grandmother purchased this house in 1974. but i got to tell you the neighborhood's cleaned up a lot believe it or not. >> reporter: now police were able to find that third suspect at 12:30 by using an infrared device on their helicopter. he was not hurt. we don't know what instigated the entire shooting. details still sketchy at this

moment. we know that federal investigators were here and we know officers recovered several weapons. two found on a nearby rooftop wrapped in a towel or some sort of clothing. now there was also another shooting just three blocks from here on tuesday night. police aren't saying if those -- if these two shootings are connected. live in east oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. los angeles police will be out in force once again tonight outside dodgers stadium. they're looking for new leads in the savage beating of giants fan bryan stow in the stadium parking lot. this is the first dodger-giant series in los angeles since that attack nearly seven weeks ago. it was on the mind of nearly everyone who came to the ballpark last night. >> >> just an isolated incident. i don't think it's going to happen again. i'm not worried about it. >> i think it's more of a thug issue than it is a dodger fan issue. it's senseless. >> los angeles police believe a young latino woman may have

been the driver of the get away car for stow's two attackers. she was wearing a dodgers jersey with the number 16. now doctors at san francisco general hospital are treating stow's critical brain injury. they see some signs of improvement and have reduced his medication since his move from los angeles. stow can now open his eyes, however the 42-year-old paramedic remains in a coma. doctors are not willing to make any long-term predictions. a san ramon police officer accused in a corruption scandal is scheduled to be in court today. 38-year-old louis lombardi accused of selling drugs to confidential informants. he's a member of the contra costa county's narcotics team. the commander of his unit was arrested in february and facing similar charges. we're now learning what may have led arnold schwarzenegger

to finally disclose that he had fathered a child with his housekeeper. the media is swarming around the bakersfield home of 50-year- old patty baena. she threatened to go public with the affair. a few weeks later schwarzenegger fired her and told his wife maria shriver. baena's neighbors have nothing but praise for the 14-year-old boy. >> this young man is just at the top in being polite and being very cordial and somebody you want to be around. >> according to the new york times schwarzenegger paid for baena's $250,000 four bedroom home. the imf chief facing sexual assault charges has resigned. dominique strauss-kahn told the international monetary fund that he is leaving his position so that he can focus on proving his innocence. the imf is now in the process of choosing a new leader. strauss-kahn is currently being held in a new york city jail. today his lawyers will ask a judge to release him on bail.

well, big news on wall street this morning is a well- known company out of mountainview. today is the first time the average investor gets a chance to buy linkedin stock. the big money managers get the first chance to buy most of ipo shares but it goes public this morning. interest in the bay area professional networking site is so high that offering price is $45 a share. that's up from a target range of $32 to $35. and that puts linkedin's market value at more than $4 billion. analysts expect interest to send that stock even higher as soon as it opens this morning. pg&e has issued another warning about pipeline pressure reductions. the utility sent a letter to regulators last week that says dropping levels could effect service to customers including hospitals and power plants. last month they warned of uncontrollable outages. state regulators ordered the utility to cut pressure on some lines and to conduct water

tests following the san bruno explosion. today secretary of transportation and jackie spear will tour the crash site. this morning cal trans crewing preparing for major work on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. they will place a 500-ton cable saddle on top of the tower of the self-anchored suspension can. that will then be sent through the cable. work gets underway about 10:00 a.m. the new eastern span of the bay bridge is set to open in 2013. sal, i'm learning all kinds of construction terms this morning. pam, you're doing very well. i like that. >> thank you. >> we will be watching. any time they do any of that kind of work on the bay bridge sometimes people want to take a look. chp is warning that if you stop at any time on the existing bridge to take a look at that you will be cited. you can't do that. if you want to look you can go down to treasure island and

for many. ridge of high pressure builds in. it's not that strong. it will last about two days and then get knocked off. looks like a cool down for the weekend. i wouldn't cancel plans but it's not going to be very warm. today we get sunshine except for the fog. sunny and warmer. coastal fog i'll fix that breezy at times. i'm always fixing something it seems like. 50s and 60s to some mid-70s here. that fog just too much for pacifica. but fairfield, antioch, livermore, morgan hill to gill roy, st. helena, you'll warm up. fog sun into friday and then see a cool down especially as we head into sunday. thank you, steve. in just about an hour from now the first of two public meetings begin concerning a speed limit for bicyclists on the golden gate bridge. the proposal would impose a 10 miles per hour speed limit. violators could face fines of up to $100. bridge officials say a speed limit would cut down on the number of bike accidents.

but many cyclists oppose the plan. the first meeting begins at 6:00 a.m. at the vista point parking lot at the north end of the golden gate bridge. the second one is 3:00 this afternoon. a new audio recording surfaces from osama bin laden. his message up ahead. plus a drastic action by the family of the two uc berkeley graduates still imprisoned in iran. and the relentless weather just will not let up. we have new video of another tornado touching down in the northeast. good morning. golden gate bridge traffic looking very nice heading south. we'll tell you more about the morning commute and another look at the bay area weather.

good morning. on the marin side of the golden gate bridge tough assignment there. some fog. the water temperature really cold. upper 40s low 50s. doesn't take much to get that fog going. it will be warmer inland. by the coast still 50s and 60s. thank you, sid. a surveillance camera shows a tornado catching a philadelphia neighborhood by surprise. the 75-mile an hour winds sent trash cans and a sign flying across a parking lot. take a look at that. a beer distributor, auto body shop and building all damaged severely but no one was hurt. the mothers of the two uc berkeley graduates imprisoned in iran are going on a hunger

strike. the mothers of shane and josh say they are doing it in solidarity with their sons who they believe are also fasting while awaiting trial on spying charges. last week iranian authorities delayed their trial without explanation. shane's fiance, sara shourd will join the hunger strike. she was released on humanitarian grounds last september. an audio message has surfaced from osama bin laden. it was apparently recorded shortly before his death. [ foreign language ] >> in the message bin laden praises the uprisings in the middle east and he and his followers see many middle east governments as corrupt and hope that their collapse will lead to fundamentalist islamic rule. this morning president obama will make a major speech from the state department focused on the up risings in the arab world. according to the white house, the president will try to erase any doubts that the u.s.

supports the protesters demands for change. and the president will defend newly announced sanctions against syria. syrian government is accused of killing more than 850 people in protests there. dozens of people turned out in san francisco to complain about what they call racial profiling by police officers. >> what they need to realize is that there needs to be a level of trust with these communities. that currently doesn't exist in san francisco. >> human rights groups say san francisco police officers assigned to the f.b.i.'s at the meeting chief suhr said he would remind his officers that local laws trump federal policies. san francisco police also considering equipping some of its officers with a video camera. this comes in the wake of the latest video released by the public defender alleging illegal searches and police misconduct. chief suhr says he hopes the

cameras will help protect officers and help shed more light on the work that they do. the cameras cost about $125 a piece. because of budget restrictions only plain clothed officers would wear them. today the prosecution in the chauncey bailey murder trial is expected to wrap up its closing arguments. yusef bey iv accused of killing bailey and an oakland journalist and two other men in 2007. bey was the former leader of your black muslim bakery. prosecutors say he ordered the killing to prevent him from writing a story about the bakery's financial problems. ktvu has obtained 1,000 pages of legal documents never seen publicly. those documents paint a troubling picture of top commanders at opd misleading the public about key aspects of the bailey case. on december 15, 2008, then

oakland police chief wayne tucker called a highly unusual press conference to respond to a story revealing what may have been the single biggest turn in the assassination of bay area journalist chauncey bailey. that was the discovery that tucker had delayed for two days a massive police raid scheduled for august 1, 2007, on the violent your black muslim bakery. so a member of the chief's command staff could extend a camping trip. but the next day august 2nd a self-described soldier from the bakery gunned down bailey and delayed -- and that delayed raid then took place on august 3rd, the day after the murder. the documents contain charges that tucker and his command staff held a private meeting just before the press conference where they agreed to cover up that decision when they met the news media. >> the department i believe had its own i guess sense of guilt

or responsibility for the murder because the department was supposed to execute a warrant on the black muslim bakery august 1st the day before the murder. now no one is suggesting or implying that the department intended to kill chauncey bailey. >> san francisco attorney john scott is bringing a lawsuit against the city of oakland on behalf of sergeant long mire, the lead investigator of the bailey murder. ktvu obtained sworn statements by long mire and other police officials. some testifying that long mire has been unjustly painted as the scapegoat for the bailey homicide investigation. san rafael police are stepping up patrols to prevent retaliation after suspected gang-related stabbing. that happened last week in the gerstle park neighborhood. police say a 21-year-old man was stabbed to death in a gang- related fight. four suspects were arrested. they are all being held without

bail. a san jose native will be arraigned in court today after her 6-year-old son's body was found in maine. 42-year-old julian mccreery was taken into custody yesterday and questioned about the death. the boy's body was found on a back road near the new hampshire border on saturday. he was never reported missing. mccreery was born in san jose but later moved to texas. she's been charged with being a fugitive from justice stemming from the murder charge. the sharks are heading back to san jose facing a real uphill battle though in their playoff series against vancouver. well, the canucks virtually destroyed the sharks 7-3 in vancouver last night. the canucks now lead the best of seven series 2-0. game three of the western conference final is tomorrow night in san jose. there's growing concern among nervous shark fans here

at home. the sharks have been ice cold on the ice during the past two weeks. san jose has lost five of its last six playoff games. attending college may get even more expensive. the warning from uc leaders about what students may face ahead. and a fiery crash at a military base. what this plane was packed with that helped fuel the flames.

want to take you out to outer space this morning. less than two hours ago the top priority of the space shuttle mission was complete. we're looking at live pictures this morning as they do their work out there. the crews of the international space station and space shuttle endeavour installed a $2 billion magnetic device that could help scientists figure out how the universe started. back at mission control, engineers now say several areas

of the underside of the endeavour were damaged during liftoff. they're going to analyze that to make sure endeavour is safe to return to work on june 1. three people are recovering from injuries this morning after a tanker crashed and burst into flames at a ventura county navy base. the accident happened during takeoff yesterday. the tanker was carrying 150,000 pounds of fuel. now the people on board were civilians. they were all taken to the hospital. but none were seriously hurt. the cost of attending a uc school may get even more expensive. uc leaders warn that tuition could rise as much as 32% next year if governor brown's tax extensions are not approved. the tuition hike would come in addition to an 8% fee increase set to go into effect in the fall. now that would bring the cost of attending a uc to almost $15,000 a year. california's biggest bike race leaves northern california today as it runs its longest

phase. stage five of the amgen tour starts in seaside at 9:30 this morning. it runs more than 135 miles along narrow roads which will take the top cyclist about six hours. now american cyclist starts today with the overall lead winning the stage that started in livermore yesterday. he crossed the finish line in the hills above san jose and now has a one minute 15 second lead on the nearest challenger. a cycling fan briefly hospitalized after a collision with a car. that spectator was riding his bike on a winding section of the sierra road when the accident happened. chp is not releasing any information about the collision. but, again, if you're heading out to watch that race, do be careful along the course route. coming up on 5:00. how's the commute so far this morning, sal? so far so good, pam. traffic is looking very nice. chp not reporting a lot for the bay area commute. let's go outside and show you the traffic on the golden gate

bridge. very nice here on one of the world's most beautiful bridges. the traffic looks good too. southbound on the right there heading down to san francisco. a little misty, little foggy but visibility is good as you head across the span as you can see. also the morning commute at the westbound bay bridge looks nice. westbound traffic is looking good all the way into san francisco. and this morning's drive is going to be okay on interstate 880 north and southbound past the coliseum. now let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. if you're away from the coast today, it will be warmer. not a lot. little bit. we still have a sea breeze and the fog is forming rapidly which is deserves a wow because we haven't had any heat. yet the fog is there and i mean it's expanding. about san francisco maybe marin inland south probably going to fill in later on it looks like unless it gets wiped out by a northerly breeze but right now i don't see that up towards north of point rey. inland that system from yesterday has moved out.

still though a southwest or west-southwest wind for many. our westerly direction. 41 now at napa airport. 43 santa rosa. 44 livermore. so it's a cool morning. the morning -- the nights aren't that long so we won't stay cool for very long but it's a chilly start. there's yesterday's system. that moves east. high pressure builds in but it's not that strong. it's only going to hang around about a day and a half to two days ask then we'll see another system come in as we cool down. today warmer inland but too much fog on the coast and more of a sea breeze. we'll go up and start to bring it right back down on saturday. today and tomorrow look warmer as everything calms down just a little bit. the mere fact that some fog is there and coming through the golden gate means that it's just not going to warm up very much coast and bay side. inland we will get some temperatures back into the mid- 70s. maybe a few pushing upper 70s far enough away. closer to the coast 50s and 60s. just too much fog. water temperatures upper 40s and very low 50s. a sea gull flapping its wings

provides enough dynamics for that fog to get going. warmer inland but fog on the coast same for friday. then here comes another cool down for the weekend, pam. oh, boy. thank you, steve. bart ticket machines are now compatible with clipper cards. that means users can refill their clipper cards at bart ticket vending machines around the bay area. money can bed ad to the clipper cards using cash, credit cards or debit cards, but you have to have an existing clipper card to use the machines. bart ticket machines are still not able to distribute new clipper cards. the investigation of a police shooting continues in oakland this morning. what led up to this armed show down. and the battle over native american burial grounds continues in glen cove. what legal options both sides are now pursuing.
