controversy. this one involves a busy bay area freeway. good morning. welcome. i'm mike mibach. dave clark has the day off. >> i'm tori campbell. we begin with a major development. it happened in east oakland. 30 minutes ago police confirmed both men that were shot have died. tara moriarty joins us live from oakland. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. assistant chief howard jordan did confirm that the two people involved in the shooting that the officer shot did die. the shooting happened at the end of this road. we're in an area north of 580. the tow truck hauled away a car

that had its back window shot out. a look at some video that our crew shot last night. ktvu was the first to arrive on scene. at 9:00 officers received inside information that violence was about to erupt here. they got a tip on a target vehicle, a light blue van. within an hour and a half they spotted the cars and moved. gunfire started. two suspects were shot. neighbors we talked to said they were surprised by the violence. >> this kind of behavior is shocking. i've been in the neighborhood since the mid-'90s. every once in awhile you see this activity, helicopters, speeding cars. >> reporter: police were able to find the third suspect in a nearby yard two hours later

using an infrared device on his helicopter. he was not hurt. we do know that federal investigators were here and officers recovered several weapons. two were found on a rooftop wrapped in a towel or some sort of clothing. live in oakland, i'm tara moriarty. another shooting to report in oakland. police were surprised what he man walked into the eastmont station and reported that he had been shot. he showed up before 8:00 and said he had been shot at mcarthur boulevard. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. in a few hours, a san ramone police officer accused in a corruption scandal is scheduled to be in court.

kraig debro has more on the charges. >> reporter: 30-year-old lewis lombardi is scheduled to arrive within the hour. the accused will get out and go into the courtroom. the police officer is supposed to enter a plea on five felonies. it has caused a federal judge to reverse an earlier decision. he -- a public report said the fbi is involved. that has also led to the arrest of norman welsh and chris ter walsh. the federal judge reversed an earlier decision and said she who allow a federal civil rights lawsuit to go forward. it's over the 2008 police shooting death of timothy wayne

new this morning, fismed mortgage rates hit new lows. rates for the 30-year fell and for the 15-year it fell to 3.80%. analysts say that is not enough to jump start the weak housing market but has helped those trying to refinance their loans. in about one hour president obama will be giving a major speech outlining new u.s. goals for the middle east. we go live to our washington, d.c. newsroom. the white house sees this as a critical moment to send a message to the muslim world. >> reporter: the message is that the u.s. is here to help help. administration officials said expect president obama to demand political freedom in places where people are demanding it and the u.s. will help foster it by offering i'd to countries like aid to tunisia.

the first flood related death is being reported in mississippi. the man died about 2:30 a.m. parts of vicksburg has been under water since last week. the mississippi river has been rising for days. the crest will hold through at least saturday morning. according to one estimate, the flooding could cost $9 billion. today the california geological survey will release its latest map pointing out the landslide danger zones. the map shows which areas are

most vulnerable. the agency has been required to report it. similar mass shows earthquake danger zones. belmont police are warning residents about a man posing as a city sewer line worker. he asked for access to a woman's backyard on chula vista but took off when she asked for identification. he is about 170 pounds wearing a cell low hard hat and dark color clothing. police said all city employees carry identification and residents with doubts should call police. >> let's get right to sal. you've been following an accident on the roadways. that's right. 237 is not doing good because of a crash. the traffic is very busy.

we're following a police shooting. police released new information. >> tara moriarty has been following it all morning longhand joins us. >> reporter: two people shot by police are now dead. it all happened about 75 yards from where we're standing at the end of the road on curren avenue near 580 and school street. this morning a tow truck hauled away a car that had the back window shot out. right now let's take a look at video that our crew shot last night. ktvu was the only one on the scene. at 9:00 officers had received some inside information that violence was about to erupt. they got a tip on a target vehicle, a light blue van tailed by the victim's car, a red lexus. within an hour and a half they

linkedin goes public today. ktvu's pam cook has been keeping an eye on it. as it been hard to follow the stock? >> reporter: yes. but linkedin did open up and pretty much doubled after the sound of the opening bell. the company executives traveled from mountain view, california, to ring the opening bell on the new york stock exchange about an hour ago. the price was priced at $45 a share up from the initial target of $32 to $35. interest was huge. it took awhile for the stock to trade. it quickly doubled. it hit $92 a share right off the bat. checking the price though right now, it's come back and hovered and stablized around $85 a shaimplet analysts said the

the combined crews of the space shuttle and international space station had a successful installation of a $2 billion magnetic device. these are live pictures of the space station. looks like you can see some of the astronauts there in the background, and the major objective for the mission was putting this $2 billion piece of device on to the space station. researchers hope it will help them figure out how the universe started. we have an update is on the condition of congresswoman gabrielle giffords. doctors say she is recovering

well after surgery yesterday. doctors implanted a piece of plastic to cover the piece of skull that was removed to relieve pressure on her brain. giffords has had to wear a helmet to protect her brain. with the plastic implant she will not need the helmet anymore. an independent investigation blamed a west virginia coal mine explosion on the on are of the mine. the report says massey energy violated basic safety practices, including not vents lating the tunnels enough. it also supports the government's theory that methane gas caused an explosion in aprilg of 2010. investigators say the tragedy was man made and could have been prevented if safety guidelines had been followed. a tsa agent has been arrested in los angeles, accused of stealing from traveler's luggage. the 31-year-old was an employee

welcome back. topping our news, a development in an officer-involved shooting. clock -- oakland police confirmed both men who were shot have died. >> reporter: the two men who were shot by police are confirmed dead. that was confirmed by the assistant cleave of police. it happened about 75 yards away from where we're standing. at the very end of this street there's some crime scene tape. that's curren avenue, where it happened now let's take a look at video our crew shot last night. ktvu was the first to arrive on the scene and the only one to get a look. at 9:00 officers had received some inside information that violence was about to erupt here. they got the tip on a target vehicle, a light blue van tailed by what they said was the victim's car, a red lex sums.

38-year-old louis lombardi is scheduled to arrive. we avenue been unable to reach his court but he is supposed to enter a plea on five felony charges. a judge reversed an earlier decision on a civil rights lawsuit. lombardi is charged with conspiracy, guns, possessing an assault rifle. the report said the fbi is involved in the case. it began with the arrest of norman wielsch and christopher butler. he and butler used to working to the on the anti okay police foamplets following reports, federal judge susan illston said she would allow a federal civil rights law shout to go forward. here's some circumstances. in march 2008 a man named timothy wayne mitchell was shot and killed by police during a raid conducted by cnet.

6830. the defendant louis lombardi is on administrative leave. he is facing five felony charges including selling drugs, stealing drugs and possession of an assault weapon and conspiracy. he walked in the courtroom about 15 minutes wearing a dark suit, came in with three other people, presumably family members. his attorney is meeting behind closed doors with the judge. also here, michael cardoza, a lawyer for another defendant in connection with the case. his name is norman wielsch. nor man wielsch was arrested along with christopher butler accused of stealing drugs from an evidence locker. five counts against lombardi. he is expected to enter a plea. we expect it to be not guilty. we expect to talk to the attorney. one interesting sideline.
