the giant's fan bryan stow attack. >> reporter: bryan stow remains in critical condition. his family got one bit of good news today, that one of the alleged attackers is now behind bars. >> the los angeles police department has arrested a suspect in the senseless and brutal attack that occurred here at dodger stadium on opening day. >> reporter: police announced the arrest of giovanni ramirez. >> he said that we had bryan's assault suspect in custody. >> reporter: sources say ramirez has at least three prior convictions for robbery, attempted robbery. witnesses identified him from a

line up and police say that he is main aggressor. police also say he has fresh tattoos that would cover identifying tattoos. after today's game against the a's two giants players said their fan bryan stow is never far from their minds. >> all our thoughts and prayers are with bryan. that's good to hear, it's good to hear they found some of the people who are responsible because it's definitely you know the last thing we ever want out here, fan violence. >> we don't want anybody to get hurt. >> reporter: the key tip in this case came from ramirez parol agent who noticed he resembled one of the suspects sketches. john sasaki. fans at today's giants fan say they too were glad to hear

of the arrest. saying that it will hopefully close a dark chapter for the the stadium. people in southern california are rooting for stow's recovery. >> we're doing fundraisers trying to raise support for this kid's family. it is awful. i hope it never happens again. >> everybody is very hopeful for a good successful recovery for him. >> baseball is supposed to be fun, a family thing, you should never worry about getting beat up and ending up in a hospital after the game. stow's family and friends also shared their joy after today's developments. we spoke to stow's mother anne by phone after the announcement. she says the family is incredibly relieved that one suspect is now behind bars. stow's fellow santa clara county paramedics also said they are thrilled at this arrest. >> it's wrong, it was wrong for

those guys to do that. justice definitely needs to be served, and it's going to happen. definitely happy about that? -z after hearing the news, family and friends visited him at the hospital where he remains in critical condition. family members thank supporters and say quote we would always like to thank lapd for all their hard work on this case. we are overwhelmed with many emotions today. a little later on in this newscast we will get a report from l.a. with more on this suspect arrested. giovanni ramirez. you will hear from his neighbors including some that witnessed the s.w.a.t. team raid this morning. contra costa county investigators are trying to fine out what happened to a 4 -month-old child. no one seems to imagine how she vanished from her bassinet.

>> take a look at this 4 -month-old child, her name is ramey gallegos. police say someone came in her parents home and abducted her. >> the baby was next to her mom's bed in a bassinett. mom woke up at 4:00 a.m. and the baby was gone, the back door was open. >> reporter: police would not say if the door was open. officers say it's suspicious. >> we don't have any indication that there was a family dispute or abduction at all. the thing that is suspicious is the child doesn't have the ability to disappear on her own. >> reporter: deputies took little ramey's parents into custody which is procedure. >> i feel like i'm in a bad dream. i just could not imagine waking up to nurse my baby and, not

being there. >> reporter: so once again little ramey is 4 months old, blue eyes, she was last seen wearing a one piece zip up pajamas. we also told there are three other young children in the home but were unharmed. if you know anything about this case, you are asked to call police. stockton police tonight say the couple who reported two young children kidnapped yesterday made up the entire story to try to get authorities to respond quickly after their car was stolen. police say raquel moore told police her two kids were missing. moore told the lie in an effort to get police to search more intensely for the stolen car. >> he felt the police would come out quicker if he said the

kids were in the car. san francisco honored harvey milk day by celebrating for what he stood. the lesbian and gay freedom band played. he became the first openly gay man to serve in california. stewart milk spoke today about how proud his famous uncle would be about the progress that was made. >> harvey milk was connected to many issues of social justice. whether it would be the homeless or disabled or elderly or labor, that is one of part of his character that i would not like to see diminish. >> reporter: supervisor milk and then san francisco mayor

george masconi were assassinated inside city hall by dan white in 1978. today would have been milk's 81st birthday. today also marks the 30th anniversary of the first aids case reported in san francisco. to reflect on the occasion, a giant red ribbon was put atop san francisco's twin peak. it will remain there until june 19th. 20,000 san franciscans have died of aids. the worse of the destruction was in joplin missouri. st.john's medical center took a direct hit from a tornado just after 6:00 p.m. the hospital is evacuating about 100 patients. the roofs of two fire stations collapsed. a county manager says 200 people are confirmed dead. the city is almost

unrecognizable. this is the aftermath of a tornado that hit minneapolis today. the storm tore up restaurants, gas stations and homes. and this is what a town looked like after a deadly tornado. forecasters said the system that struck minnesota was separate from the storm that struck eastern kansas. tonight inmates in louisiana are helping sandbag to keep their prison from flooding. waters in angola are running so high. take a look at these pictures, they are close to reaching power lines. an outer levee breeched at the louisiana state penitentiary. with that about 2,000 inmates were put to work to make sure the prison stays intact.

the river is now expected to crest on tuesday. one in and one out in the race for the presidential nomination. mitch daniel sent an e-mail to his supporters telling them that after long consideration he would not run for the 2012 nomination. it's believed he decided not to run due to opposition from his wife and two grown daughters who did not want to face the scrutiny of a race. former minnesota governor tim pawlenty says he is in. in this video the republican announced his candidacy run this evening. a blustery day made its mark in san francisco where one tree could no longer bend with the wind. new information tonight about what might have caused an

tree in the richmond district. the large tree toppled on to a pickup truck between california and clemente streets. a neighbor said it all happened very fast. >> this tree was going back and forth. and i was talking with my wife actually, this tree is going to go. and yeah it went. it was one of those thing that is were unexpected. >> pg & e sent out crews to make sure none of their transmission lines were affected. a man killed himself using a toxic gas at a hotel in san ramon. the man was found dead at 4:00 this afternoon. firefighters gave the all clear at about 9:15 this evening.

hazmat teams are still trying to determine what inhalant the man used. three people were burned in an explosion at a livermore apartment building. >> she came running out, made her way to the grass. >> it just seemed like a loud bang, like a stick of dynamite went off or something. >> reporter: there was an explosion in one of the first floor apartments in this come lek. c o mplex. it was so powerful that it caused part of the back porch to explode. >> there were two guys sitting new mexico back. their skin was coming off, and one had his hand blown off.

the girl was just sitting here with her clothes blown off. investigators spent the day looking for clues of what happened. >> reporter: you don't have an explosion short of a gas leak. >> i would always smell marijuana coming up from the windows and i did smell a weird odor and my son heard some clanking noise. >> police would like to talk to the suspects to talk about what happened here. reporting from livermore, janine de la vega. antioch police arrested two suspects in a string of thefts.

33-year-old kenneth hobbs was arrested yesterday along with rachael byrnes. police have identified a man and a woman killed in separate shootings in oakland over the weekend. 22-year-old bianca august was sitting in this car on high street near carington street when police say a suspect fired several shots. someone drove august to highland hospital where she was pronounced dead. 24-year-old timothy barnes was found shot to death on the sidewalk on 90th avenue near hillside street. four young men were seen running from the area around 11:00 p.m.. no arrests have been made in either case. the shooting happened in the baby district about 12:30 this morning. the victim was sitting in car near third street when three men approached him.

one showed a gun and demanded the laptop. when the victim struggled he was shot in the neck. the three men escaped, officers say the victim was hospitalized with life threatening injuries. san jose police are searching for the owner of a horse they say they had to shoot and kill after it ran through a glass door front. the horse was running down white road last night when it smashed through the window at this western wear store. it's boarded up now as you can see. the horse tried to back out of the broken glass but apparently was unable to escape. the horse was pleading from multiple cuts. millvalely police remain on the look out for an armed robber who held up a gold trading business. a man robbed pacific precious metals on miller avenue yesterday morning. witnesses say the robber was wearing black clothing along with the mask and surgical

gloves. he got away with more than $10,000. san francisco police are searching if drugs or alcohol played a role in a fatal motorcycle crash. at about 1:40 this morning a motorcyclists struck a median on juda street near 39th avenue. he flipped over and wound up under a parked car. he was pronounced dead at the scene. no one else was hurt. dui checkpoints could be restricted. santa rosa congressman michael adams says some police are using the checkpoints to wrack up inpoundment fees. assemblyman alan says the check points target unlicensed illegal immigrants who lose their vehicles everybody if they are not driving under the influence. it's do or die time for the

pakistan militants are

battling army and navy commandos after storming a naval base. at least four pakistani sailors are dead tonight and others injured in fighting that has been going on for hours. the militants have captured one building, and there might be hostages inside. the pakistani taliban had pledged to attack government and military installations aft u.s. forces killed osama bin laden earlier this month. in baghdad, two american service members were among 20 people killed today in a series of attacks. at least 80 people were injured, including 3 u.s. soldiers. in all, there were 17 attacks today. a spectacular sight in iceland. today was the second day of eruptions from the nation's most active volcano. four international airports were all closed to most flights

today as this volcano sent ash some 12 miles up. last april a different iceland volcano erupted for weeks, grounding planes in several european countries. some trouble for a couple of spacewalking astronauts today 240 miles above earth. one lost a bolt and got a washabler stuck in a crevice. the spacewalk went 90 minutes longer than planned, to for a total of 8 hours and 7 minutes. today's was the second of four planned for endeavors final flight. >> bay area scientists, this, of a kind i'll have of gulf oil

we had some gusties earlier this afternoon. you can see the storms moving to the east. they should remain out of our forecast picture overnight. right now we do have mostly clear skies and the wind check in the middle of bay gusting at 20 miles per hour. the most recent gusts of up to 44 miles per hour. here's a look at the over all story for tonight, we have scattered clouds, gusty winds. the sun cloud mix and we have another fairly good rain chance showing up on the weather charts. you will see that the chance showing up at least in the five

day. this weather system will pretty much cast our system for tomorrow. and as a result we will hold on to the partly cloudy forecast in the 50s and 70s. this is when things become interesting as we head into wednesday. this system pretty strong for this time of year. still we will be tracking light shower activity. at least for tomorrow morning we have cloud cover to contend with at 8:00 and the clouds favor in the coast. parts of the south bay, we could have a few patches scattered. clouds beginning to back up in coverage. with that we will have partly cloudy skies into the afternoon hours. wind speeds do crank up once
