bridge this memorial day weekend but we've just learned about emergency work that needs to be done on b.a.r.t. that may have you rethinking your plans. ktvu news starts right now. good afternoon. topping our news, a big blow to the giants and their fans. their star catcher could be out for the rest of the season after a collision at the plate in the 12th inning last night. new at noon, the giants' manager talked about the condition of buster posey. kraig debro is live from at&t park now with the update. kraig? >> reporter: yeah, good afternoon, tori. bruce bochy just met with the media about a half-hour ago to tell us all what happened. he's telling us that buster posey has a lower left ankle fracture. he doesn't know how long he will be out. remember, buster posey is the reigning national league rookie of the year and their number

one offensive player. he's now on the dl list with a fracture to the ankle. it's casting dark shadows on the game being played here -- here now. this all happened last night. scott cousins a was on third base. the batter hit a ball to. the player went through threw the bowl to posy -- through the bowl to posey. giants' manager bruce bochy says he also feels bad. >> he could have gone for home plate but he ejected to lock the ball loose even though po -- posey dropped the ball.

i do think we need to consider changing the rules a little bit because the catcher's so vulnerable and there's so many that have gotten hurt. not just a little bit. >> reporter: buster posey's agent was the first to call for rule changes in order to protect the catcher. there's been no comment on that so far. we spoke with jeremy affeldt before the game as well, he says he -- he didn't see it as a dirty play. he says if buster had caught the ball, made the tag and didn't get hurt, none of us would be talking about this. a couple of other giants' players were not available for comment. jeremy affeldt said there was a lot of unease in the dugout and a lot of the players are saddened by what happened. buster posey is a very important player in this team. they've already called up his replace machinement.

hold. his attorney says he has an alibi. the oakland police chief says he's talking about a plan to prevent the violence that happened yesterday. a 17-year-old high school student was riding his bike home when i was killed. he was found shot to death at the owner of -- corner of olive and richie. on "mornings on 2," chief anthony -- ba -- anthony batts -- >> i think we need to use his life of an inspiration, to change oakland to make a difference. >> the school plans to dedicate the graduation ceremony on june 17th to franklin and others who have lost their lives to violence. the chief says with summer approaching and time on their hands, it's a good time to consider mentoring to help keep kids on the right path. investigators are looking

into whether a shoot something related to gang activity. shots were fired just before 11:00 last night. police are still searching for the shooter or shooters this afternoon. >> i just heard a couple of shots, about five, six shots and then the ambulance come and they leave. that's about it. neighbors say gunfire is not unusual in this area but investigators still don't know if the victim was targeted by gangs or just involved in one. the young man died shortly after police arrived to find him breeding -- bleeding in the street. police say he was a latino in his 20s. his address is not known. >> we don't know if it's gang- related but definitely we're gonna look into that aspect. at this point, the investigators are still trying to gather evidence and identify any possible witnesses. >> a tow truck pulled the car involved in the accident away from the accident -- in the shooting away from scene.

this is san jose's 20th homicide of the year, by the way. it was unanimous. about 90 minutes ago, the b.a.r.t. board approved an order to buy tasers for every officer in the apartment. right now you, the officers have -- in the department. right now, the officers have to share the tasers. this sparked action after the fatal shooting of oscar grant. some have reservations about the tasers but were per -- but were persuaded after training would be offered. >> if you ask my colleagues around the state and around the country, they would be envoyous at the amount of training that the board has mandated for our personnel. they have also appropriated the additional funding to make sure it occurs. >> chief rainey says he wants to make carrying a taser mandatory, even though he

admits some officers may not want to do so. he hopes to have the acers in their hands and on the streets by july 1st. drivers were already war being warned about the changes on the bay bridge. but those who were hoping to take b.a.r.t. instead may have to rethink those plans. ktvu's claudine wong has just learned of emergency repairs that could make travel even more complicate. it's a story you will only see -- you will only see here on channel 2. claudine? >> reporter: we're on yerba buena island looking down on the bay bridge. >> the work this weekend on the bridge will take place mostly overnight on the lower deck as you approach oakland. that's something we've been expecting. we've been warned about it. there is on an ipad app about it but this emergency -- but this emergency work by b.a.r.t., that may catch people by surprise. it's all connected to a transtube on the 17th. five cables were burned in that fire. for the past six month, b.a.r.t. has been working on an

emergency contract to replace them. >> the cable basically powers the electric third rail. that's what keeps the trains running all through. we can't get any trains through there because we have no power on transtube? that would be a disaster! >> reporter: the repairs will start saturday morning. on saturday, they will last only a few hours and then continue the following weekend. while that work is underway only one tune is -- tube is open. only one train can get through in the bay. that cuts the number of going into half. most people -- into half and most people will have to transfer and that could add 20, 40 minutes to your travel time. >> if you are trying to get

minor damage is -- is being reported in chico. this is video of a twister near durham, which a tiny farming community, about five miles south of chico. no one was hurt. ktvu has a reporter in the northern sacramento valley checking the damage. he will have reports tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. the supreme court ruled in favor of an arizona law that punishes businesses for hiring imlegal immigrants. the justices ruled 5-3. under the law, the state can suspend all business licenses if an employer knowingly hires illegal immigrants. a second offense within three years can put the company out of business. opponents say it opens the door for more discrimination. the obama administration says it steps on federal authority. president obama and russia's president promised to
