find out what happened. and also, like we said our thoughts are with the families in this situation. the chp is keeping the name of that contracted company quiet until the families of the victim are told about the crash. the regional open space district is a special government district and is not controlled by a city or a county. the district oversees 60,000 acres of open space lamp and cared for preserves many in the peninsula and in san jose bay. the county clerk's department has made a major breakthrough in connection with a robbery. this is a picture of one of the secret compartments that sheriff's detectives found. hidden inside you can see were more than 20 handguns and rifles. the guns according to sheriff's detectives were taken from the victim's house in gilroy. gonzalez and five other suspects are accused of ambushing the victim and then

torturing him before leaving with the guns. and ktvu has learned that a teenager who was killed on his way home from school may have been targeted. the suspect was questioned by police a week ago. police speculate that someone may have tried to kill him then but want to make it clear he had no report and wasn't arm with a weapon. his grandfather is a correctional officer who has a message for the shooter. >> he wasn't a gang banger. we would not allow him to run the streets. he had a 9:00 curfew. you are so hot right now, you can't go any where, somebody is going to turn you in. oakland police shared new video of the first of four killings in just the past five days. in less than 15 minutes what that video shows and why police say they are now stepping up

their efforts tonight. a tornado right here in northern california wreaked havoc on butte county farms. ken pritchett was with some of those almond growers as they surveyed the damage. >> reporter: the damage estimates are not in but it's a good bet that these almond trees will make up the loss. this almond tree was one of dozens say the growers that was knocked down. when the tornadod the áf touched down, the picture showed a rural area. but the picture today became more clear. >> it splintered the almond trees, they looked like toothpicks. >> reporter: and we were speaking to the orchard owners

and she showed us this. >> it literally takes it and throws it into the other side. >> what were you feeling, what were you thinking? >> awe, there was no fear it was just, the absolute brutality that was going on. >> reporter: her almond grove was lightly hit. her concern was for her neighbors who lost much more. perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. this aerial photograph shows the tornado cut through the orchard. 10 years of growth gone. the tornado took out a barn, damaged a garage and damaged several homes. >> it's a major hit to these farmers. >> major monetary thing. >> reporter: these more mature almond trees when they are knocked over they are mostly done for. but the farmers say they were able to save some of the smaller trees. while you can have insurance for your home, you can have

least four four tornadoes hit california on tuesday. and missouri officials say many of the missing are alive but haven't been able to get in contact with friends and family since the tornado devastated their town on sunday. the death toll rose to 126 people. a ruling by the u.s. supreme court today could lead to states playing a bigger role in immigration policy. the court upheld an arizona law that penalizing business that hire undocumented workers. the obama administration argued it's role of the federal -- it's the role, excuse me of the federal government to enforce immigration laws. the ruling only applies to a 2007 law not a more recent one that has attracted widespread attention. the issue of immigration is

officials are questioning the federal secure california program. they oppose a program taking fingerprints to identify and deport undocumented immigrants. >> now that there's more information out on the impact of secure communities and the very large number of people who are deported who have no criminal record, there's some push back. >> hennessey says next wednesday he will stop honoring immigration and customs enforcement holds on those arrested on misdemeanor charges. >> we still work i.c. with i.c.e. but we would like to work with them on the larger manners not the small manner. >> reporter: i.c.e. says it has so far helped to deport 4,000 people from

california. 40% who had prior criminal records. u.s. census bureau says the hispanic population grew four times faster than any other group between 2000 and 2010. 28% of latinos in the u.s. live in california making up the majority in nine counties. the biggest surge was in the south and midwest where the number of latinos doubled in the first decade of the 21st century. this is going to be a tough weekend getting into and out of san francisco. we've already been warned about overnight eastbound lanes this holiday weekend. as we first reported for you at noon, b.a.r.t. trouble is also going to be a problem. b.a.r.t. will close one tunnel of the transtube to make repairs. the transbay line will be single tracked through the tunnel. drivers will have to transfer on 12th street -- riders will have to transfer on 12th street. service this sunday and monday will be delayed until at least

2:30 in the afternoon. b.a.r.t. will be repairing and upgrading electrical cables that were damaged during a small fire last december. the damage occurred near the oakland end of the tunnel. most of that has been repaired but b.a.r.t. will carry out more extensive work during the temporary memorial day weekend closure. drivers headed to the east bay will also face delays this weekend on the bay from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. some east lanes will be closed. westbound lanes will not be affected. the new alignment will remain in place until the new east lane opens. police chief charlie beck said today he is absolutely confident the prime suspect is

behind bars. giovanni ramirez was arrested last week. stow was beaten on march 31st outside dodger stadium. ramirez' lawyers denied their client was at the game that day. san francisco general hospital tells ktvu tonight there is no change in stow's condition. he remains in critical condition. the san francisco chronicle is reporting that giant's pitcher jeremy atfeld joined stow's family. atfeld held his hand and prayed with stow. there are calls to change the rules in baseball. posey broke a fibula when scott cousins slammed into him last night. there is nothing in the rules against colliding with the catcher. fan reaction is mixed. >> i think something should be done. because i don't think the catcher should be that vulnerable. >> i think it's part of the game. the catcher is supposed to have

a judge today denied a bid to halt the dedication of an oakland memorial to the victims of the st. john memorial. jones ordered 917 of its followers to commit suicide back in 1978. oakland police tonight are bracing for a potentially dangerous summer. rob roth is live in oakland now with the steps that officers are taking in the wake of a string of killings, rob. >> reporter: frank it was in front of this house on 34th avenue in the fruitvale district that a gardener was shot to death while mowing the lawn last friday afternoon. today police showed us surveillance videos they say were taken moments after the shooting. a small memorial to antonio torrez sits on the same lawn he took care of for this woman.

she says torrez had a 14-year- old son. >> antonio didn't deserve this. he was a good person. that's all i've done, tried to make sense of what's going on. an investigators released a series of photos today. these pictures were taken from home security cameras within a few blocks of the killings. police call these men persons of interest who know what happened to torrez. >> when he was approached by four male blacks, i believe that some type of argument insued, and i believe this victim was robbed. i believe these persons of interest if they were involved they saw what happened. >> reporter: last year at this time oakland had 34 homicides, so far this year it's at 40 with just four killings in just the last five days. summer is often when the

homicides increase and it's fast approaching. mayor gene quan says she no longer has funding for a summer job program. she says parents too must do their job. >> i want parents in this city, don't let your children hang out randomly. >> police are urging witnesses to come forward in the torrez case and in any of the others, they say witnesses are some of the best weapons in solving crimes. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. a researcher from uc river side is calling california's three strikes law a complete failure. the law was passed back in 1964 and was supposed to keep repeat felons off the street. instead the law has overcrowded prisons and cost the states billions of the dollars.

violent crimes have cut back in california. that drop began two years before the law was implemented. now to a story we first broke last week on ktvu. a gilroy man facing a life sentence under california's three strikes law is expected back in court next month. bud wallis ruiz faces a count of animal cruelty. san francisco will be one of the first cities in the united states to be able to play with your cell phone. the google wallet app will allow users to swipe their cell phone at the check out stand. the first wallet phones will be the nexus s4g on sprint. >> a much nicer day than yesterday but things may be changing again. let's go to bill in the weather center to find out more about the long holiday weekend. >> the holiday weekend is

basically upon us. we have one more day. but clouds are going to stick around and temperatures will stay on the mild side. we're looking at 60s and 70s. mostly 70s at that. i'll show you why in just a moment. right now down in san jose 67 degrees. some temperatures in some neighborhoods reach near 70. the forecast tonight will be clouds, maybe some morning drizzle as you move along the coast. as that weather system stays to the north of us. it's a weak one but it gets close enough that it might trigger a little bit of cloud and drizzle. that goes right through the weekend. it's not going to be a hot weekend. it's not going to be a wet weekend just like today. a slight chance of sprinkles in the morning as this weak system gets close to us. it will deposit rain. but just enough to bring in clouds and keep temperatures on the mild side. then it goes off friday into saturday we look at this next system that drops down.

it's a cooler one. doesn't do much. just brings more clouds and increases that on shore flow. instead of 70s and low 80s: we're looking at 60s and low 80s. friday morning, tomorrow morning you see clouds and there's that drizzle chance up north. afternoon it clears up, maybe some patchy coastal fog. watch the mountains as we go into saturday. you start to see some green showing up. not a big deal but boy the clouds come in. maybe some sprinkles, snow flurries up around tahoe. for us that trends temperatures down. that's your saturday, then you go into sunday the mountains still have scattered showers, sprinkles, maybe a little bit of snow flurry. and through the day on sunday we're looking for more filtered sunshine. it's not a typical late may pattern or early june pattern. it's more reminiscent of something you would see in march. not can case. we're going to see temperatures

an update now on a special report we brought you last night on the 10:00 news. viewers have been coming up to ktvu crews all day asking about more information about getting their parking tickets thrown out in san francisco. one viewer told us he printed out our story and enclosed it with his citation. state law requires a parking officer to put the last four digits of a vehicle number on each ticket. but many of those officers just fill in cannot read the number. to watch the entire report look under the ktvu.com right now section on our website. mark is off, fred is in tonight. hard to think of anything worse

happening to the giants than posey gets hurt last night. >> the giants, remember now they are still in first place but they are dead last in the national league in runs scored. so last night's 12th inning collision just plead things worse for the team. posey has been getting dinged all season. but last night he got what is being described as a football type hit by scott cousins. posey suffered a fractured fibula. >> he has taken this pretty hard. as his wife last night and you know he wants to be here, he wants to play. he knows it's a pretty serious injury. and it's going to take some time here. >> hopefully, we will get results back that aren't as bad as people think it is. but until then we have to win
