one of two major transit projects taking place in the bay area this weekend is underway. we'll tell you how it's affecting travel, coming up. hundreds of homes threatened and newest information on a wildfire burning right now in california. we're gearing up for a blustery saturday. details coming up in just a moment. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, may 28th. memorial day weekend is here,

let's get right to rosemary for a check of your holiday forecast. good morning, rosemary. >> good morning! instead of feeling like may, it will feel like early spring, another day of cool weather, cloudy weather, breezy, especially in the afternoon. and perhaps even a sprinkle as we work through the afternoon as well. necessary that what we can expect for your saturday this morning we're waking up with patchy fog, low clouds out there. the winds are expected to kick up from 20 to 30 miles per hour in some areas. we'll show you where coming up. also, bring you temperatures we are expecting for the afternoon, as well as your current conditions. that in just a true moments. just about an hour ago, lanes on highway 24 reopened after an accident that seriously injured three people. it happened this morning just past the camino pablo exit on eastbound 24. only one car was involved but there were three people inside the car and you can see it the damage is extensive. two people had to cut out of the car using the jaws of life, and all three were transported to john muir hospital. right now the cause of the accident is still unknown.

bart passengers could be experiencing some delays this because of a major emergency project in the trans-bay tube. ali has more on the length of delays you can expect. >> reporter: good morning, mike. we talk to bart crewmembers who say right now there aren't any major delays to report, but the passengers who will be most impacted by the changes are people traveling between san francisco and the peninsula, to dublin and fremont. one of big changes, people will have to transfer here at the 12th street bart station in downtown oakland, which is where we are now. the confusing things about this station is that there are two levels of platforms, this platform below us and then this escalator heads down to another second platform, below the one we're standing over. so that's why because of the changes this weekend and the schedule impact, warrant has the people out here directing passengers, helping facilitate passengers and let them know which trains they have to

transfer on. the reason behind all of these changes is what you're seeing in this video right here. bart crews are working to replace some of its cables and the trans-bay tube. this is video of one of those cables and an example of what bart is going to be fixing this weekend. bart says these repairs need to happen because they will a problem on one of the cables back in december, so in order to avoid any further problems and a complete shutdown of the trans-bay tube, they have to do the work this weekend. they're trying to do it on a weekend where they think the fewest amount of passengers will be affected, which is why they're doing the work on a holiday weekend. while this work is going on, only one track will be open in the trans-bay tube, that's why you have the changes in the schedule and in the transfer point that passengers will have to take. today the work will only last until 7:30 a.m., and then normal service will resume. so things are just about to get back to normal right now. but on sunday and monday, crews will be working until 2:30 p.m.

crews will work this same schedule next weekend as well. so right now, not a lot of delays to report, in fact not many delays at all. bart has some personnel standing by helping direct passengers who may be confused about which train to transfer to. but the work, the bulk of the work and the biggest impact will happen on sunday and monday, and that work will continue until 2:30 p.m. we'll check back with new about a half hour from now. live in downtown oakland, ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. as we mentioned, the work on the trans-bay tube comes the same weekend as the project on the bridge. let's take a live look at the bay bridge incline. the work is on the lower deck, coming into oakland. later tonight drivers could face some delays as that detour is put in place. this is video of caltrans preparing for the weekend's work. crews will be shutting down some eastbound lanes as they shift drivers to a new at the dour. it will be in place until the

new span opens in 2013 and will require drivers coming off the lower deck into oakland to veer slightly to the right. right now, that road goes to the left. this work will not require caltrans to do a full closure of the bridge, but crews will shut the eastbound lanes tonight and tomorrow. westbound lanes will not be affect. you can find more information at ktvu.com. just click on the weekend extra tab on the homepage. oakland police are looking for the man who opened fire on a group of people while he was riding a motorcycle. it happened just before 8:30 last flight on athens near san pablo avenue. oakland police say three people were shot and had to be transported to highland hospital. there are injuries are not life- threatening. no word on a motive for the shooting. a 22-year-old man hit by a car in san diego's marina district this week has died. he died on thursday, he was on

life support after being hit by a car early wednesday morning on lombard and pierce streets. the driver of the car says urban darted into the street. it does not appear alcohol is involved in the crash. urban just graduated from the university of san francisco. san jose state will hold its commencement ceremony at 9 this morning. this year it will take on a somber tone. the university is awarding posthumous degrees to two students shot and killed in month. the two victims were accounting majors. police say one of their husband's shot and killed them before turning the gun on himself. joseph niceo has pleaded guilty to the killing of bay area women. maceo is now acting as his own attorney and yesterday he talked about some of the photos of women in bondage found in his reno home. he claims the pictures were taken with the women's consent and asked the judge to dismiss

the case. a response to that motion is expected on wednesday. it is the end of may, and that means prom season. but not everyone was dancing in santa cruz county. the soquel prom was held last night but several students weren't able to go after the students were accused of promoting racism. school officials say this was an example of ongoing actions that promote white power. >> the students contributed to people feeling intimidated and harassed. >> it wasn't just wearing white t-shirts for a photo. >> no. they were creating a feeling of intimidation. >> school officials are not going into detail about the other reasons the five were suspended. some of the suspended students we spoke to say the school is overreacting and insists they are not racist. and now their parents are considering legal action, if the school does not admit the suspension was a mistake, but the district says all actions

are final. southern california firefighters are making progress against the wildfire that had been threatening hundreds of homes. the fire is burning in the lake isabella area north of bakersfield. the fire is now 25% contained and some resident were being allowed to go back home. the fire began yesterday afternoon and grew quickly because of high winds. residents from about 400 homes were evacuated as fire crews worked to save the threatened building. >> to the fence and they bring a kimberly dozier last minute, the crews came, in saved the day. i thought for sure this building right here next to us here, and this one that's right behind me, were gone bus the flames were next to the fence as high as the roof! >> by last night the fire had burned about 200 acres and only one home suffered minor damage. so far no injuries have been reported and there is no word on how that fire started. next week pg&e will be conducting pressure tests on the pipelines and santa clara area. they will involve filling the pipes with water and pressurizing them at a higher

level than usual, the pipes will be monitored for eight hours, any pipe that does not withstand the pressure le replaceeds with a new, already pressured pipe. here is the testing schedule. the newberry springs area will be pressure tested on tuesday from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. new work will be tested on friday, that time has yet to be determined. funerals have begun for the people killed by that devastating tornado in joplin, missouri. the death toll stands at 132, but there are still 230 people missing. the first funerals have been held for the 19 people whose bodies have been released to relatives. officials say the identification process has been slow because they instituted several measures to prevent misidentification. those went into effect after a woman mistakenly identified one victim as her son. one family is already rebuilding in an effort to bring hope back to their city.

darren collins owns a contracting company. his wife's lawn was destroyed in the tornado. he spent first few days with his crew helping with the search and rescue efforts, but now he feels it is time to get back to work. >> looking at it now, it's a mess. but one board at a time. we'll rebuild this city and it will be better than before. >> the governor has given an executive order to expedite the building and recovery of joplin. that's making permits to rebuild easier to get. the crews hope to have the salon open and ready for business in 45 days. some schools in the city have also started to rebuild. good morning to you. a live look over the bay. we're dealing with low clouds and high clouds, as the next wave already approaches the coast. very similar to yesterday, we'll be cool and very breezy at times, and we're looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies as we step outside this morning. in san francisco, winds to 13 miles per hour. calm santa rosa, san jose 10

moved through, and behind the front we're expecting windsy conditions. you see what is happening over the sierra. more snow for the sierra expected by tomorrow afternoon. we're mostly clear but the winds are expected to stay with us over the weekend it's going to be a little blustery at times and below average for this time of year. the winds to 30 miles per hour, especially along the need coast and for the hills. the rest of us will see winds between 15 and 20 miles per hour. it looks like the second half of the day going to be the breeziest. highs for today, upper 50s on the coast, mid to upper 60s for the bay area and inland. 55 in concord, 60 in san francisco. if you're headed up to the big carnivale festival this weekend, bring along the jacket. 64 redwood city. and 66 degrees expected in san jose. your extended forecast, we're really not going to budge from this pattern. we do see again a little improvement for sunday, monday looks pretty good but by monday night and into tuesday, another system going to bring the possibility of rain on tuesday, and keep us partly cloudy on wednesday.

and any case we're well below average for this time of year. some of us normally in the 80s for memorial day weekend. coming up we'll look at some advisories for the sierra. new this morning, president obama arrived in poland a few hours ago. this new video shows the president outside the president a.m. palace in warsaw where he met with the polish president to discuss a number of issues. mr. obama asked the polish president to help develop democracy in the middle east, saying poland's transition to democracy two decades ago is a model for the arab world. this is the last stop in his six-day european tour. he is scheduled to arrive back at the white house later today. with the president in europe, vice president joe biden delivered this weekend's online video address. he credits the obama administration's bailouts of u.s. automakers back in 2009 for turning around that industry and helping the nation's economic recovery. >> because of what we did, the

rangers are preparing for the extra visitors they say they are especially being on the lookout for people drinking while operating boats and while you are outside this weekend, santa clara emergency officials are warning you to watch your step. the warm weather brings out rattlesnakes. officials say you should watch where you step and look for snakes under logs, rocks or in high brush. and if you see a rattlesnake, keep your distance and give the snake time to get away. if you do get bitten, do not attempt to suck out the venom. instead keep the bite below your heart, call and wait for help. california state officials are warning people on the water to be especially careful this holiday weekend and the summer. the snowfall level will result in high and cold river flows which create dangerous conditions. this morning we are joined on the phone. good morning. >> good morning. >> i'm sure people want warmer weather because they want their boats on the water. what kind of conditions can

they expect? >> well, quite a bit cooler as everyone knows. other than that, the water temperature will be a lot cooler than we expect this time of year. and when you get newspaper the rivers, of course, the currents will be a lot stronger and the water level will be higher. >> since we have you on the phone i want to show our viewers some numbers right now that are according to state officials. last year, 570 recreational boating accidents were reported in california. 283 people were injured. and according to that report, 49 people died on the waters in california. 75% of the drowning victims were actually not wearing life jackets, and officer, are you surprised by these numbers, especially how many aren't wear life jackets out there? >> you know, unfortunately, i'm not surprised by it. both the state and the coast

it all started around 4:30 yesterday afternoon after police received reports of a stolen car. the driver of that car going over the bushes, jumped out that moving car. but that's when he tried to get into a minivan with a mom and her daughter inside. police responded quickly, you can see them there pulling them away from the minivan and taking them into custody. >> i never hit a driver out with my doors unlocked and nobody else should either because it's -- i live right down the street and i'm just -- [not understandable] >> that woman said she is thankful for the police and promises she will never say anything bad again about police officers. the yemeni man accused of trying to storm the cockpit of a american airlines jet pleaded not guilty. rageh al-murisi is charged with interfering with a flight crew. if convicted he could be sentenceeds to 20 years in prison. the attorney for the 26-year- old says his client is mentally

ill and is not a terrorist. this morning he remains in jail without bail and is due back in court in one month. the commanding officer of the navy's blue angels flight demonstration team is stepping down. commander dave cost made it official yesterday, the resignation comes after he says he flew too low during a performance at an air show last week in lynchburg, virginia. blue angels have now had to cancel a number of performances scheduled for next month. if you're hoping for some warm weather this holiday weekend are you may not be getting it, right? >> giving you a look outside this morning, we're waking up with the low clouds, patchy fog, and we're got high clouds overhead. there you see it, little sunshine and cool and breezy today. if you're headed to the sierra, even a winter weather advisory to worry about, starts about 1:00 this afternoon. two to four inches of new no below 7,000 feet, and the wind gusts are expected to hit 40

work is wrapping up right now on the trans-bay tube, but it is not done yesterday. bart riders, be warned. you could be looking at delays if you're head indeed and out of the city this holiday weekend. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. topping our news this morning, repair project on bart is expected to cause delays throughout the weekend. right now normal service has resumed but that won't be the case as the holiday weekend continues. ali rasmus is live with more on when the service will be disrupted and why. ali. >> reporter: mike, normal service is resuming right now, and the good news is that some of the bart workers here say there are no significant delays to report this morning. trains are running on a normal saturday schedule, you can see it some of the trains just pulled in now. you can see it some of the passengers are making their way out of the station. the big changes that happen will start really tomorrow and monday. and that big change is where

some bart passengers will have to transfer. starting tomorrow and monday, if you're trampling between san francisco and the peninsula to dublin and fremont be this is your transfer station, the 12th street oakland station. the reason for the change and shift is that construction work, bart crews have to do some essential work on some of the cables in the trans-bay tube. and while that work is going on, only one train can go through the trans-bay tube at a time. and that's why bart has had to shift some things around with its trains and its transfer points. in order to help passengers navigate the changes this morning, bart had some workers at the 12th street station helping passengers make the right transfer and again, as until 7:30, until right now, passengers for the first hour and a half of service this morning traveling between san francisco and the east bay on the dublin and fremont lines had to transfer here at the 12th street station, and that is no longer the case now. now that normal service is resuming, the regular transfer

station is 19th street. now, today construction work in the trans-bay tube again lasted only until 7:30 so it's wrapping up right now. but on sunday and monday, crews will be working until 2:30 p.m. that's when the bulk of the work is going to be done. crews will also be working on this same schedule next weekend as well, so two weekends in a row of these changes on but for the rest of the day, when you're traveling from the san francisco and peninsula to the east bay, you still will transfer at 19th street station because construction isn't happening right now. it all sounds confusing, bart just has people standing by on the platform. you can always ask the people here in the booth at each of the stations, and coming up in about a half hour, we'll talk with bart chief spokesman about some. work construction work they're doing and the schedule and transfer changes that are happening because of it. that's coming up at 8:00. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. this weekend is the traditional start of the summer driving on and even though gas

prices are dropping, they're still too high for some dreyer's. triple-a is forecasting a 1 1/2% decrease in the number of drivers hitting the road this weekend, this as the average price for a gallon of regular gas in san francisco, oakland and san jose still remains above $4 a gallon. >> some trips are not okay. that means i got to use somebody else's car or use my parents' car or something else, because this thing costs too much. unless all my boys want to chip in and throw down for some gas. >> it's estimated almost 3 million americans will take to the skies this weekend. we did find a lot of people at san francisco international airport on thursday getting ready to get a head start on their holiday travel. officials expect a three to four percent increase in air travel this weekend over last year. the contra costa fire district had safety tips for peep who want to do a little barbequing today. they say grills should be kept 15 feet away from homes and buildings, and 10 feet away from dry grass, weeds or brush.

charcoal should be kept dry because it can spontaneously ignite if it gets wet. children and pets should also be kept away from any grills. we have an update on a story we first told you about last weekend on morning on 2. one of people injured in an explosion at a livermore apartment has died. he's been identified as 35-year- old paul lom of san jose. two other victims are still hospitalized in critical condition. police say drug paraphrenalia was found inside the apartment, and that likely contributed to the blast. but they say it was not a meth lab. the san francisco police department is facing new scrutiny after the release of a new video showing possible misconduct by officers. that video released by public defender shows an undercover drug buy in the tenderloin last april. the police report says the man accused of selling drugs pit out a packet of crack cocaine, but the video relationship shows that didn't happen and says the officer lied.

police chief says the officers involved will be disciplined. >> they did find that there was inappropriate behavior, but i don't think it rises to the level suggested by him. >> now this new video came out the same day a judge threw out a dozen more drug cases related to other possible misconduct by officers. one man is in custody this morning after leading oakland police on a short high-speed chase, which ended yesterday afternoon on west macarthur boulevard. the driver is suspected of driving two pharmacies earlier in the day. we checked in with oakland police overnight and they tell us they're still searching for the man who they say sexually assaulted a woman inside her home. the attack took place in the montclair neighborhood yesterday morning. police say the man robbed the woman at gunpoint, then assaulted her while her two children were sleeping nearby. they have not said whether that attack was random. family members of the oakland man killed in an

officer-involved shooting are demanding officers. police had information a violent crime was about to happen on may 18th, that led officers to pull over a car carrying three men. two of the men came out with guns. officers opened fire shooting 23-year-old john and 30-year- old antoine jackson. the attorney says opd is releasing little information to the families. >> the irony is the chief always talked about transparency, so this is acting just like the old people did. this is not transparency. transparency is not when you don't say who the officers were, where the weapons were -- inquiring minds wap to know. >> the incident is under investigation. the water is back on this morning in oakland's rockridge district after a water-main break. it happened around 5 last night on college avenue south of clairemont. east bay says crews have to shut off the area to repair the broken main. that left customers without running water for several hours.

still no word this morning on what caused that break. flooding is expected to get worst across the plain states this weekend as rising rivers continue to overflow the banks. people spent all day yesterday filling sands bags ahead of massive flooding expected this weekend from the missouri river. melting snow combined with recent heavy rains have led to that flood danger. south dakota governor says levees along the river should do their job, but people are not taking any chances. >> we're fortunate in the fact that we're able to prepare for it and get the sandbags out, get things moved, get people relocated, into higher ground. >> the flooding also continues to hit parts of montana. the hardest hit area is in round-up, where many homes are now under water. rain swollen rivers could see flooding in that area. for another month. good morning to you. a live look over the city, where we've got partly cloudy skies, mostly sunny in addition to low cloud out there this

partly cloudy skies. law enforcement officers in the bay area are setting up dui checkpoints as part of their maximum enforcement period this weekend. one of those checkpoints lasts night in novato had a special significance, two years ago 9- year-old melody was killed by a drunk driver. she was in the crosswalk with her father holding hands when the two were hit by a motorcycle. her father suffered multiple injuries, including losing his leg. >> if you get drunk, and you get behind the wheel or get on a motorcycle and kill somebody, it's not an accident. it's murder. >> last night just about a mile away from the intersection, police set up a dui checkpoint in honor of melody. we saw a number of arrests made. police say since her death, they have stepped up their efforts and in the past two years the number ducks i arrests in novato are up and the number of alcohol-related crashes are down. a new bill might regulate

dui checkpoints. the bill would ensure checkpoints are only shut. on streets where drunk driving is a problem. it would also ban authorities from impounding cars of unlicensed drivers. allen says cities can abuse the checkpoints generating revenue at the expense of poor immigrant communities. court in session today for day five of the murder trial of casey anthony. she is accused of killing her two-year-old daughter caylee. yesterday the jury heard testimony from casey's father and the worker from the company that towed her car. both said her car smelled like a decomposing body. her father also denied he had anything to do with the death. we're still waiting to see who will be called to the stand today. a man accused of sexually assaulting a girl at piedmont high school is denying the allegations. this is 55-year-old victor salazar when police say he convinced a 17-year-old girl to go into the girls bathroom with him. police say he took pictures of the girl and kissed her, then

tried to take it further. >> sexual battery occurred and attempt or copulation of a minor. >> the school district says background checks are done on all employees. police say salazar does not have a history of sex crimes. he appeared in court on wednesday and is charged with one felony and two misdemeanors some far he has refused to enter a plea. he is being held on $120,000 bail. a christian website is offering to buy all of the radio stations owned by backers of harold camping, the oakland based preacher who predicted the world would end on may 21st. the website bible answer.org is offering to buy the stations for a million bucks. the group says and won't take over the stations until the day after camping's newest predictions that the world will end on october 21st. the website says if he believes his preaching, he should sell

north. we could squeeze out just a few showers today but the bigger story may be the winds in the afternoon. we'll look at all that for your weekend, coming up in just a few moments. topping our news after overnight crash that led to a rescue operation that crash that three people in the hospital this morning with serious injuries. it happened around 4 this morning on eastbound highway 24. the california highway patrol says only one car was involved. but two people inside had to be cut out of that car using the jaws of life. all three people in the hospital were taken to the hospital. the cause of that accident is still unknown. bart passengers could be experiencing some delays this weekend because of the major project taking place in the trans-bay tube. ali rasmus has more on how that work going and the length of delays you can expect. ali. >> reporter: mike, we're happy to report there are no delays on bart this morning. trains running on a normal saturday schedule. the big change will happen if you're taking part tomorrow and monday.

especially if you're riding on bart between the hours of 8 and 2:30 in the afternoon. right now we're at the 12th street bart station in downtown oakland. the big changes will happen starting tomorrow and monday, if you're traveling between san francisco and the peninsula. to dublin and fremont, this 12th street will be your transfer station tomorrow afternoon and monday afternoon. the reason for that change is that construction work that you mentioned, bart crews will have to do essential work on some of the cables and the trans-bay tube, and while that work is going on only one train can run through the tube at a time. bart has had to shift things around with its trains and its transfer points. again, the work on that has wrapped up for today. but they're resuming construction work again tomorrow and on monday so that's when you could expect some delays. some passengers ysabart has done a good job of getting the word out about the changes. but they wish this didn't have to happen on memorial day weekend. >> a lot of visitors are here. my parents are out from san diego and it's difficult for

them to get over here. so a little inconvenience, but panning planning ahead gives you an opportunity to plan ahead. >> in order to help passengers navigate the changes this morning, and they were in effect from 6 to 7:30 this morning, bart did have workers out here at the 12th street station helping passengers make the right transfers. but again, today construction work has wrapped up. so for the rest of the day, everything is back to normal. but again on sunday and monday, crews will be doing that construction work in the trans- bay tube until 2:30 in the afternoon. that's when you can expect some changes, including that 12th street transfer. crews will also work this same schedule next weekend as well, so bart -- chief spokesperson just walked up. we'll talk to him and check back with you in about a half hour, let you know what he says about the changes because of the work, and changes rest of this weekend and also next

weekend. the work on bart comes the same weekend as a reconfiguration projects on the bay bridge. this is video of caltrans preparing for the weekend's work. crews will shut down eastbound lanes as they shift drivers on to a new detour in place until the new span opens in 2013, requiring drivers coming off the lower deck in oakland to veer right. right now the road jogs to the left. this work will not require caltrans do a full closure of the bridge but crews will be shutting down some eastbound lanes from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. tonight and tomorrow. westbound lanes will not be affected. you can find more information about this weekend's construction work on both bart and the bay bridge at ktvu.com. just click the weekend extra tab on the homepage. oakland police are looking for the ma on who opened fire on a group of people while riding a motorcycle. it happened before 8 last night on athens near san pablo

avenue. three people were shot and had to be taken to highland hospitalized. their injuries are not considered life threatening. no word on a motive for the shooting. fairfield police are trying to figure out who detonated a pipe bomb under a car. police were called out to the parking lot of an apartment complex on phoenix drive around 1:00 friday morning for a report of a car on fire. the car's owner put out the flames before officers got there. an investigation revealed a pipe bomb appeared to have been detonated under the car. the neighborhood was evacuated while officers and the travis air force base team checked out of their cars to see if there were devices under them. no one was injured. a 22-year-old man hit by a car in san francisco this week has died. according to the chronicle, he died on thursday. he had been on life support after being hit by a car early wednesday morning on mom barred street. the driver of the car says he darted into the street. police stay it doesn't appear alcohol is a factor in the crash. urban had just graduated from

the university of san francisco. it's the ends every may, which means prom season is here. but not everyone in santa cruz county was dancing. prom was held lasts night at so cal high school, but five students were not able to go because the school says they were suspended for promoting racism. the suspension came after the students wore white t-shirts for a class photo, even though they were told not to. school officials say this was an example of ongoing actions that promote white power. >> the students contributed to people feeling intimidated and harassed. >> it wasn't just wearing white t-shirts for a photo. >> no, it -- they were creating a feeling of intimidation. >> school officials would not go into detail about the other reason the five were suspended. some of the suspended students say the school is overreacting and insists they're not racists. now their parent are considering legal action if the school does not admit the suspension was a mistake, but the district says all actions are final. some people are able to head back to their homes now

that firefighters have made progress against a wildfire in southern california. the fire is burning in the lake isabella area north of bakersfield. fire officials say that fire is now 25% contained and some residents are being allowed to go back home. the fire began yesterday afternoon and grew quickly because there were high winds there. residents from about 400 homes were evacuated as fire crews worked to save the threatened buildings. >> they bring last minute and the crews came, in saved the day. i thought for sure this building right here next to us here and this one that's behind me were gone, because the flames were next to the fence as high as the roof. >> last night the fire burned about 200 acres but only one home suffered minor damage some far no injuries reported. no word on how the fire started. good morning. a live look downtown san jose. partly sunny skies, looking mostly cloudy. most of us are seeing clouds

city. darren collins owns a contracting company and he has already started work on his wife's salon, which was destroyed in sunday's tornado. he and his crew spent the first few days helping with the search and rescue efforts, but know he says it's time on show the city they can rebuild. >> looking at it now, it's a mess. but one board at a time, we'll rebuild this city and and will be better than before. >> missouri's governor has given an executive order to expedite the building and recovery of joplin, that's making permits to rebuild easier to get collins and his crew hope to have the salon ready for business in 45 days. some schools in the city have also started to rebuild. a woman in los angeles says she learned a lesson the hard way. >> i never had a -- >> back after a man in the run from police tried to jump into her car. the action behind that long chase? and a live look outside at the macarthur maze in oakland.

interfering with a flight crew. his attorney says the 26-year- old is melt mentally ill and not a tractor-trailer. he's due back in court in four weeks. could be getting ready to make a run for the white house. texas governor rick perry admitted yesterday while in austin he is thinking about a presidential run. the texas republican says he won't decide until after the current legislative session in his state ends. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani is speaking -- sparking speculation he may be getting ready to jump into the 2012 republican primaries. he is scheduled to visit new hampshire next week. he ran for his party's presidential nomination in 2008 and policed fourth in the new hampshire primary that year. giuliani's possible entry into the g.o.p. contest comes as he leads a new

coastline and our hills for the afternoon. mid-50s, low 60s for your lunchtime, upper 50s to mid and upper 60s for the afternoon. and we continue with this trend. a few light sprinkles possible today, little bit of drizzle. sunday, monday looking slightly better but still not where we should be this time of year. tuesday another shot at some rain, partly cloudy and cool on wednesday. back to you. in just about 30 minutes a retirement ceremony will be held for two members of the san francisco police department. this is hunter and hawk. hawk began his service in 1998, while hunter joined the force in 2004. the department says both horses are well deserving of their retirement. the ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. in golden gate park, and they will be taken to their new homes, a 40-acre ranch in sonoma county. millions of people are expected to drive somewhere this holiday weekend. the problems you can run into if your route includes the bay bridge. san jose state seniors will

graduate today, but without two of their classmates killed in a domestic dispew.

the memorial day weekend is here, and people are hitting the road. you're looking live at the bay bridge, where a major detour will soon get underway later today. welcome back to mornings on 2. drivers on the bay bridge won't be the only people experiencing delays this weekend. there's also major construction on bart. service is back to normal right now after overnight work, but more delays are ahead. ali rasmus is live with more on which riders will be affected. >> reporter: good morning. that's right, there are no delays on bart this morning.

trains are running on a normal saturday schedule. but there are some big changes in store if you're planning on taking bart tomorrow and monday. right now we're at the 12th street bart station where you can see a pittsburgh bay point train is about to pull in. the changes that you'll have to watch out for for all passengers on all train lines except pittsburgh bay point passengers. everyone else tomorrow and monday will have to transfer here at the 12th street station in oakland to get across the bay. 12th street can be a confusing station, and that's because there are two levels of train platforms. one below and then if you look at this escalator, that goes all the way down to a second level of platforms and trains. the reason for all these changes and the schedule and transfers is that construction work you mentioned. where the has to repair some of its cables inside the trans-bay tube, and while its doing that work it can only run one train

at a time. these repairs must be done, otherwise the problem can happen on the cables that could shut down the trans-bay entirely. >> there are 15,000 customers a day that we figure will be affected by this. but if we don't do it and those cables fail in the trainings bay tube, then during the week 170,000 people go through there, that's a lot more folks that will be very unhappy. >> to help passengers navigate the changes this morning, bart has some workers here at this station helping passengers make the right transfer, walking around in yellow vests on. we talked to one passenger who says bart has done a good job getting the word out about the changes but he wishes it didn't have to happen memorial day weekend. >> a lot of visitors are here, my parents are out from san diego and it's difficult for them to get over here. so a little inconvenience, but planning ahead gives you an opportunity to plan ahead.

>> this construction work on the trans-bay tube started this morning. it wrapped up at 7:30, and a bart spokesman says so far so good. no problems with any of that work. but there is more construction work scheduled tomorrow and monday. on sunday, monday crews will work from 8 a.m. to 2:30 in afternoon when passengers will have to be aware of that new 12 street transfer station, and also working this exact same schedule next weekend. so we have two weekend in a row of these transfer and schedule changes while this trans-bay tube construction work continues. ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the bart work comes the same weekend as a reconfiguration project on the bay bridge. some of the eastbound lanes will be shut down tonight and they'll stay closed until tomorrow morning. that's expected to begin a detour that will be in place for the new span of the bay bridge opens in 2013. the closure tonight begins at 8 and will end at 5 in the morning and will only affect eastbound lanes. you can find more information about the weekend's construction work on both bart

by some rain this weekend. rosemary will have your forecast coming up in just four minutes. san jose state will holds its commencement ceremony at 9:00 morning and this year will take on a somber tone. they're awarding posthumous degrees for two students shot and killed in a parking garage earlier this month. they were accounting majors. police say one the women's husband shot and killed them before turning the gun on himself. one man is in custody this morning after leading oakland police on a short high-speed chase. the chase ended yesterday afternoon on west macarthur boulevard near west street. officers say the driver is suspected of robbing two pharmacies earlier in the came we checked in with oakland police overnight. they tell us they're still searching for the man who they say sexually assaulted a woman inside her home. the attack took place in the montclair neighborhood early yesterday morning. police say the man robbed the woman at gunpoint, then

assaulted her while her two children were sleeping nearby. they have not said whether this attack was random. the san francisco police department faces new scrutiny after the release of a video showing possible misconduct by officers, showing a drug operation in the tenderloin which happened last april. the police report says the man accused of selling drugs spit out a package every crack cocaine. the video shows that did not happen and says the officer lied. the police chief says it the officers involved will be disciplined. >> they did find that there was inappropriate behavior, but i don't think it rises to the level as suggested. >> this new video came out the same day a judge threw out a dozen more drug occasions reeled to other possible misconduct by officers. family members of the oakland man killed in an officer-involved shooting are

demanding officers. on may 18 oak lands police say they had information about a violent crime about to happen near kern avenue. that led officers to pull over a car carrying three men. investigators say two of the men came out of the car with guns. officers opened fire, shooting these two men. the attorney says opd is releasing little information to their families. >> the irony is the chief always talked about transparency. so this is acting just like the old people did. this is not transparency. transparency is not when you don't say who the officers were, where the weapons were. years minds would like to know. >> police say the incident is still under investigation. the man accused of sexually assaulting a girl at piedmont high school is denying the allegations. this is 55-year-old victor salazar. police say he convinced a 17- year-old girl to go into the girls bathroom with him. police say he took pictures of

the girl and kissed her before trying to take it further. >> sexual battery occurred and attempt oral cop lakes of a minor. >> the school district says background checks are done on all employees. the police department says salazar does not have a history of sex crimes. he is being held on a $120,000 bail. we have an update on a story we first told you about last weekend here on mornings on 2. one of people injured in a livermore apartment has died. he has been identified as 35- year-old paul lon of san jose. two other victims are still hospitalized in critical condition. police say drug paraphrenalia was found in the apartment in that likely contributed to the blast but say it was not a meth lab. the water is back on this morning in location and's district amp water-main break it. happened around 5 last night on college avenue just south of clairemont. east bay crews had to shut off the water to repair the broken main and that left customers without running water for several hours. still no word this morning on what caused that break.

embarcadero, golden gate park area, sunset district area, pacifica dealing with light rain, and sausalito had us just a little earlier this morning pulled east just a little bit over the bay bridge. sitting in the 50s at this time. temperatures similar to yesterday. we'll be between partly and mostly cloudy skies for today. a slight chance that maybe a little drizzle and light rain and it will be windy for the afternoon. that could be the pesky problem in the afternoon. this system will stay primarily to the knocked of us. you can see it most of the rain even thunderstorms reported over the northwest coast of california. and this will continue as the low over the oregon coastline continues to shift east by tomorrow. you can see how we are just catching the tail end of this trough that will keep us with the cooler air mass. the possibility of a sprinkle

and breezy conditions. we'll be partly who mostly cloudy. notice most of the moisture to the north of us to the east scattered showers, snowshowers over the sierra today and we even have a little moisture hanging over the pacific. we're likely to see just maybe a sprinkle or two before this clears out. by the afternoon breaking away to partly cloudy but line the front we will get very breezy. tomorrow morning we wake up with better conditions although still unseasonably cool. so for today, cloudy, cool and windy. gusts even to 30 miles per hour. for the coastline, by tomorrow partly cloudy, slightly warmer, and the winds shouldn't be as windy. so for today, widespread 60s in the forecast. 66 for napa. 65 in concord. only getting to 60 degrees for the afternoon in san francisco. 65 mountainview. upper 50s half moon bay and pacifica. and the extended forecast, today will be the coolest day. we'll be slightly better for tomorrow. monday looks pretty good if you have the day off. but then by monday night and tuesday, the clouds are become and a chance of rain come tuesday morning on that back to work drive. meanwhile our temperatures will

good morning to you. a live look, temperatures running 5 to 15 degrees below the seasonal norm. the german military says its top commander in afghanistan has been wounded when a suicide bomber attacked a governor's compound this morning. two german troops were killed and three wounded. four afghans were also killed. five men's of the same family are dead after a plane crash in alaska. that happened yesterday outside anchorage. police say the cessna crashed shortly after taking off from an airport on railroad tracks. everyone onboard died. the victims include a 46-year- old man and a 69-year-old man.

three kids were also onboard. the ntsb is now investigating the crash. flooding expected to get worse across midwestern and plain states this weekend as rising rivers continue to overflow their banks. in south dakota people spent all day yesterday filling sandbags ahead of massive flooding expected this weekend from the missouri river. melting snow and heavy rains have led to the flood danger. south dakota's governor says levees on the river should do their job, but people are not taking any chances. >> we're fortunate in the fact that we're able to prepare for it and get the sandbags out, get things moved, get people relocated into higher ground. >> severe flooding also continues to hit parts of montana. the hardest hit area is in round-up, where many homes are now under water. rain swollen rivers could keep flooding the area for more

month. this is day five of the murder trial of casey anthony. anthony is accused of killing her two-year-old daughter caylee. yesterday the jury heard testimony from her father and a worker from the company that towed her car. both said her car smelled like a decomposing body. ing father says he was nervous he would find the bodies of his daughter and granddaughter inside the car. >> i was hoping that wasn't the case. i was hoping everything was okay. i was -- i didn't want to believe what i was smelling to a point. i was trying to not -- think too much ahead of myself. >> cindy anthony the mother has been testifying this morning. she was crying while her mother has been on the stand. highway patrol spend extra time looking for drunk drivers this weekend. they're setting up checkpoints and pulling over anyone who they think may be under the influence of alcohol. the maximum enforcement period started last night and runs through midnight on monday. one of dui checkpoints this

weekend has special significance. the checkpoint got underway yesterday. on that roadway two years ago, nine-year-old melody was killed by a drunk driver. she was in the crosswalk when her father when they were hit by a motorcycle. her father suffered multiple injuries and lost his leg. >> if you get drunk and you get behind the wheel, or you get on a motorcycle and you kill somebody, it's not an accident. it's murder. >> last night about a mile away from the intersection, police did center that dui checkpoint set up in honor every medical deem since her death the number of ducks i assessed there are up and the number of alcohol- related crashes are down. a christian website is offering to buy all the radio stations owned by the backers of harold camping, the oakland preacher who predicted the world would end on may 21st. his family radio group owns 66 stations. now the website bible answer.org is offering to buy the stations for a million

dollars. the group says it won't take over the stations until the day after his newest prediction that the world will end on october 21st. the website says if camping believers his preaching he should sell because if the rapture happens, the stations won't be worth a dime. the fish you order may not be the fish you're getting from stores and restaurants. the group oceana has released a new report that says as much as 30% of fish are mislabeled as a more expensive species. researchers say they're now using dna tests to find out if the test are being deliberately mislabeled. blue fin tunas has managed to swim its way off the endangered list. the center for biological diversity agrees, disagrees rather, and believe the blue fin tuna is in danger every

extinction because of overfishing. a shipping company in oakland is going grown by plugging in. the company used to use the engines to run generators in port but after a long retrofit project, ships are now able to plug into shore power. i american lines president says this will help reduce pollution. >> 50,000 pounds of nitrogen oxide a year, just from these five ships. and over the course of time we expect our competitors to follow suit and we should be able to magnify the amount of reduction we get by substantial amount. >> california has mandated that all shipping companies use shore power by 2014. the countdown has begun to the 75th birthday celebration of a landmark. plans were unveiled yesterday for a festival to celebrate next year's milestone for the golden gate bridge. the bridge is not going to close to traffic. unlike the 50th birthday celebration, but there will be a two-day festival over memorial day weekend next year and a new visitors pavilion at

after 300 years, the anchor from black beard's ship has been raised from the sea. this 3,000 pound metal is believed to be the anchor from the queen anne revenge, this was the flagship for pirate black beard. researchers found the anchor off the coast of north carolina, where black beard ran his ship aground in 1718. the family of a 10-year-old boy in florida got a shock when their son returned from a fishing trip. take a look at this alligator, it's 6 feet long and michael

dasher dragged that home after fishing with his friends. he says the gator wasn't an easy catch but they kept on trying to reel it in and it kept snappingal at them. polices came and collected the gator. and they told michael the next time he sees an alligator, he should run away and not try to catch it or bring it home. business owners on the gulf coast hoping for a very profitable holiday weekend. panama sight beach, florida and other tourist destinations suffered big losses last year because of the deepwater horizon oil spill and now many people who work in the region say tourists are back this year. officials in mississippi say 75% of the hotel rooms there are booked this weekend. oil company bp has provided money to gulf coast states to help promote tourism. if you are planning to barbeque this weekend, the contra costa fire district has safety tips for you. they say grills should be kept 15 feet away from homes and buildings, and 10 feet away from dry grass, weeds or brush. charcoal should be kept dry because did can ignite if it
