doesn't stop for san jose police. we've seen police patrol cars pulling out of this garage. officers getting ready to start or end their shift for the day. last year, police vetted 20 homicides in this city. police are already on their 22nd homicide of this year. that lastest started last night, after a 35-year-old san jose woman was found shout in her car. police got reports of some sort of disturbance happening in the area, there were also report about gunfire heard in the area. when officers arrived, they found the woman in her car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. she died a short time later after paramedics arrived. around the same time last night, a san jose man walked into a hospital, also suffering from gunshot wounds. after police questioned him, they discovered that 20-year-

old man had also been at the same address on ambler way. detectives have a lot of work to do in this investigation. they don't know if this is a gang related crime or some sort of domestic dispute. >> it is a heavy load for them. i don't think you can get worse when you talk about a homicide, have you a individual that has lost their life. >> reporter: their investigation much this recent homicide has been hampered hampered so far. police say some of the witnesses are not being cooperative. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu chant 2 news. overnight, the san jose

bomb squad gave the all clear to the castro district after someone called in a suspicious bag. officers immediately responded. just after 12:30 this morning, officers declared the bag safe, and reopened the area to traffic. traffic is running smoothly into oakland tonight. this deture shows cars coming off the bay bridge, using the new, eastbound detour, just about two hours ago. caltrans closed down several lanes around midnight in preparation for the switch over. at one point, traffic had to be stopped, but just for about two minutes. caltran's spokesman, joining us on the line. did you pull an all nighter? >> yes, i did. >> from the video we saw, things are looking good.

open its gates to people today. the memorial features four granite plaques bearing the names of the more than 900 people who died in the 1978 tragedy. among the names? jim jones, the man who led his followers to drink cyanide laced punch. the inclusion has sparked some outrage. bicyclist is in the hospital after being struck by a cab. we do know the person that was hit is in critical condition. people who are spending their labor day weekend in the sierra are in for a cold one. i want to show you a live picture of interstate 80 at truckee. as you ski, there is a lot of snow on the side of the road there. chains are no longer required in that area, but what a different story it was from last night. this is what 80 and soda

good morning to you, san jose walking up with partly sunny skies. 50degrees outside your door. president obama is expected to arrive in joplin, missouri, and walk through the devastation left behind by the f5 tornado just a week ago.

the president is making the trip hours after arriving home from his six day european tour. he will attend a memorial service for the victims at missouri southern state university. the white house says the president is expected to deliver some brief remarks. the death toll from the joplin tornado continues to climb this morning. >> it may now be the deadliest on record since 1953. live this morning from joplin with more on the devastation and the search for survivers. >> reporter: mike and claudine, good morning to you, the death toll stands at 139 here in joplin. a community of only 14,000 people, and the number unaccounted for is around 100. really difficult to get your mind around. of course it is sunday morning, today marks the one week mark since this deadly tornado swept through. a lot of people are taking time

out from the recovery and the cleanup to of course go to church services, but a lot of churches in the area damaged. i want to step out the way, and show you quite a magnificent site. you can see here, much of the sanctuary and the parochial school has been destroyed, but what remains, the giant steel cross that still stands very prominent. it is quite a site to behold, when you consider when this tornado came through, it was packing winds of more than 200 miles per hour, and steel doesn't even stand up to these winds, we have seen steel buildings ripped apart. but this is the bible belt. this is the buckle, as one person said. so these people are certainly calling on a higher power this morning to try and make sense of what they have gone through. sheer horror, really in the

last week. the search and recovery still very much underway. cadaver dogs and search and rescue dogs from all over this country have converged on this community, and they're going through mounds of rubble. but you can imagine, mike and claudine, it is going to take quite some time. >> i know we've watched the numbers of unaccounted people shrink in the past few days, as people come forward. do they think really now that the list has dwindled, that that is mostly the search and recovery effort underway now? >> reporter: the governor of the state still calling this is arch is and rescue on -- a search and rescue operation. the weather has been okay, and they're hoping there will still be that miles an miraculous story we hear of someone being pulled from the rubble. communications have gradually opened up in the area, and

folks have finally been able to reach their love ones, the grim reality is the death toll numbers are going up and they warned us that that death toll will most likely continue to rise. but people relying on that hour power this sunday that someone is going to be pulled alive from the twisted metal here. >> good to hear that those communications are up and running, even more on this sunday morning. thanks casey. time now is 7:17, major disasters are proving to be big business for a san francisco company. it's usually used by parents to follow kids, but the app also allows people to check in after disasters. the company says hundreds of people checked in after the

the japanese government has started experiments to figure the best way to remove

radioactive material from farmland. an idea is to plant sunflowers that are known to absorb radioactive materials from the soil. the ground was shaking in the south and the north bay yesterday, the first earthquake was a 3.3 magnitude that struck just after 3:30 in the morning around morgan hill. later, a 3.7 hit the north bay. no damage was reported. a very minor earthquake caused a big scare in philadelphia. >> people up the street that way, people down the street that way, everyone was coming out of their house. >> police and firefighters were sent to check it out, but couldn't find any fires or damaged homes. there was an earthquake of a

a shooting in san jose, two people are hit, this as the city tries to reign in it's homicide rate. >> the most recent happened last night on ambler way. allie rasmus is live, where investigators are trying to piece together what happened. >> reporter: san jose police say their detectives have a lot

of work to do in this investigation. right now, they don't know the motive. at this point, police say the witnesses involved are not cooperating with them. at this point, what we know is two people were shot last night, and a 35-year-old san jose woman died from her gunshot wounds. police arrived at the 4,000 block ofambler way around 10:30 last night after getting a report of a disturbance happening there. and a report of gunshots happening there. she died a short time later after paramedics arrived. a 20-year-old san jose man walked into the hospital, also suffering from gunshot wounds. they discovered the 20-year-old man had also been at the sam address on ambler way. a san jose police spokesperson says, their detectives have their hands full this week. detectives are investigating two other homicides that happened last week. last year, san jose police

investigated a tollal of 20 homicides in the city. this year, according to this police statement, they're already on homicide number 22. >> they work diligently. they a lot of times will work state through. 24 hours. i've seen on previous cases they stayed at the office and literally stayed at their desk and followed up on leaves and come back to -- leads and came back to the office. >> reporter: they say they don't know the relationship between the 20-year-old san jose man who had those gunshot wounds, and the 35-year-old woman who died from her gunshot wounds. police don't know if this is a gang related, or domestic dispute. they want to emphasize that

people can call in anonymously. san jose police are also searching for the person who stabbed a teenager to death just days before his high school graduation. police found vincent tram lee early yesterday morning. he recently celebrated his 18th birthday and graduated from independence high school. his high school counselor described him as a sharp student who was on his way to college. >> definitely a real shock. nobody really saw this coming. >> he's not hated around here. i don't understand why such a thing happened to such a good person. >> less than 100-yards away is a memorial for another young man in his 20s, who was shot to death on wednesday. police are looking to see if the cases are connected. so far, no arrests have been made. all northbound lanes on highway 101 are reopened. the person was hit by a bmw before immediately being struck by a honda accord.

the road was closed around 10:00 last night for the investigation. but reopened later. the chp is investigating, but say alcohol was not a factor in the incident. the couple will likely spend the rest of their lives in prison. the judge will hold a hearing right after the sentencing on whether to release grand jury transcripts that clue tell from jaycee dugard. day 5 of the trial took place yesterday in orlando. anthony's mother took the witness stand, and she broke down in tears when they showed a photograph of her granddaughter's crib. he told the jury about how anthony acted on the day her daughter was missing. >> when you called her, what

did you see to her? >> where's caylee. >> was that the question? >> yes, sir. >> what was the response? >> don't know. >> the judge has ordered the rare saturday half day court session. firefighters are gaining control of the wildfire better thanking in kern county. thousand of residents had to evacuate, right now, the fire is 65% contained. the damage so far has been limited to a patio roof. dodger stadium caught fire during the 5th inning of a game, forcing some fans to change seats. it happened last night as the dodgers were taking on the florida marlins. smoke started billowing into the upper deck along the first

base side. they found the fire burning in a confined storage area. fans were never evacuated, and the game was not delayed. one week has passed since the police have arrested a suspect in the beating of bryan stow. the family says stow is still being monitored seizures, but so far he has not had any. baseball fans attending tomorrow's memorial day game with the a's, are being asked to donate to the troops. the money is going to go toward buying supplies like toothpaste, bottled water, and energy bars. memorial day is a federal

a dozen soccer fans from a game in seattle. here in the bay area, two people are recovering from injuries this morning, after their suv went down an embankment in petaluma. a woman had to be pulled 40 feet up the slope in a rescue basket. a man was able to walk out with the help of rescuers. highway patrol says there have been two other crashes in the same spot in just the past few months. chp says officers have made 52 arrests so far during their memorial day weekend crackdown. the maximum enforcement continues through midnight tomorrow. time now, 7:40, the sheriff of san francisco is getting ready to make a controversial move this week. who he plans to release from jail, and why the feds aren't happy about it. what led to an aspiring model to plunge several stories

the space shuttle endeavour. crew members did four successful spacewalks during the mission, and accomplished a number of maintenance and installation tasks. the shuttle is scheduled to land on wednesday. this weekend, promising to release low level immigrant inmates from jail. the sheriff says he's trying to uphold the san francisco sanctuary city law. this do all conflict with the federal government security program. on the phone to help us out with this is angela chan. good morning, angela. >> good morning, thanks for having me. >> let's talk about this. the secure communities program says feds can scan, fingerprint databases and hold over

possible deportees. what is the sheriff's obligation here? >> he does not have to hold anybody for customs enforcement. the sheriff focuses on criminal law, and not on civil immigration law. the problem is, as he mixes up these two jobs, which is clear, he's not supposed to, he would fill up our jails for people who are not necessarily committing crimes, people who have green cards and visas, but not necessarily committing crimes. in any city, including oakland, san francisco, throughout the bay area, there are large immigrant populations, including some undocumented populations, and they're needed to help fight crime, if they're the witnesses, or victims to crime, we really don't care about their status, we want them to come forward, and protect public safety. >> is this more about a relationship with the city, or

maybe the dragnet that pulls in people who aren't involved with the immigration issue at all? >> the second part? can you clarify that? >> there is some thought that this becomes like a dragnet, you do immigrations, and you get pulling at people who aren't involved in it, and it kind of is too broad? >> that's right, it's both of those factors, because they're linked. focused ostensibly on level one offenses, which are more serious felony offenses, but the vast number are people without criminal [ inaudible ] particular through the bay area, but also california, reported because communities in california do not have criminal records or are arrested for

minor offenses, like traffic offenses or loitering. what that means is people are going to be afraid to come forward to talk with police, because the police may arrest them for very minor things and those fingerprints are transferred. >> we don't have much time, and i want to ask you one last question before you go, with the critics, do you think lawsuits will be filed against cities like san francisco. >> there are certainly groups in the bay area that would file lawsuits against anything, but replying to these is not mandatory, and the sheriff got these directly for immigrations and customs enforcement, when he asked about immigration holds or detaineeses, these are

requests, they're not mandatory. >> a big issue, but we certainly appreciate your time. >> thank you, thank you for having me on the show, we appreciate it. >> angela chan, joining us on the phone. san francisco school board will decide next month, where students enrolled in junior rotc programs can continue earning physical education credits. right now more than 1,000 students are enrolled. school officials are concerned rotc instructors do not have a credential in p e, and therefore possibly opening the district to a lawsuit. junior rotc supporters say enrollment in the program will drop, if students cannot get the pe credits. russian authorities arrested dan choi yesterday for holding an unauthorrized gay rights parade yesterday in

moscow. he challenged the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. firefighters are trying to find the cause of an explosion at a chemical plant in north carolina. these photos show those powerful blasts. the plant is closed weekends, and no one was inside when the explosion happened. people who live close by were told to evacuate, but have since been allowed to return home. no one was hurt. a woman is dead, and another critically injured after falling out of a hotel room window in atlanta. witnesses say she was play wrestling with her friend, when they crashed into a window and fell three or four stories below. threat was an aspiring model who was celebrating her birthday. the other woman was taken to the hospital with broken bones. police believe it was an

accident, but they are still investigating. a number of other people were inside the hotel room at the time. so far, no one has been charged with any crimes. a public ceremony will be held to celebrate the life of 15-year-old alison bayless. she disappeared on monday. authorities say it now appears she took her own life. video cameras showed her walking onto the golden gate bridge monday morning, but never showed her walking off. tomorrow's ceremony will be held at 2:00. the san francisco marin food bank opened a new pantry at the fairfax community church this month. they are open every sunday from 10 to noon. the church said more than 100 families showed up yesterday. >> i never thought i would be in this spotion in my life. i had a good life. i raised a family. i've owned three homes. i've lost my lost house, it was

model themselves on foreign schools. standardized testing doesn't allow students to apply what they are learned. police in joplin, missouri, say scammers are taking advantage of hard hit areas from last week's tornadoes. the agency has received reports of towing companies towing cars without the owners permission. >> they're going to come to this place, because they know there's a possibility of scamming people. >> police say there has also been an increase in looting in the area following the tornado. the greatest spectacle in racing gets underway today. drivers hit the track at the indianapolis motor speedway friday for their final practice session. it's the 100th anniversary of the race, but today is only the

san jose police are investigating a shooting that happened last night, that injured one man, and claimed

coming up. a fatal shooting last night, one of several homicides in the city in the last few days. live in san jose with the latest. >> reporter: san jose police spokesmen say their detectives have their hands full. we want to point out some troubling numbers in the crime rate here. in 2010, all of last year, police investigated a total of 20 homicides. this year, they're already on 22. this latest homicide investigation began last night. police arrived at the 4,000 block ofambler way around 10:30, after hearing reports of some sort of argument happening there. when officers arrived, they found the woman in her car. around the same time last night, a 20-year-old san jose man walked into a nearby

hospital, also suffering from gunshot wounds. his injuries were not life- threatening. they discovered that 20-year- old man had also been near the same area on ambler way. detectives have a lot of work to do in this investigation. they don't know the motive in this yet, they don't know if this is a gang related, or domestic related dispute. >> it is a heavy load for them. i don't think you can get worse in any situation, where you're talking about a homicide. you have an an individual that lost her life. they work diligently. >> reporter: san jose police say they're investigation has been hampered by the fact that some of the witnesses involved, police say are not being cooperative. police are urging anyone with information about what happened to come forward. they want to emphasize that anyone can call, and remain

anonymous. the shooting following the stabbing of a teenager yesterday. investigators found vincent tram lee at an apartment complex. he recently celebrated his 18th birthday, and graduated from independence high school. no arrests have been made. overnight, the bomb squad gave the all clear to the castro district. that call came in last night near castro and 18th streets. officers immediately responded. just after 12:30 this morning, officers declared the bag safe and reopened the area to traffic. hayward police are trying to find a 26-year-old woman who has not been seen for almost two days. investigators say michelle thi

le. friends say she mentioned driving to reno after the class ended. police found her car just a few blocks away from kaiser. calls to her cell phone have gone unanswered. traffic is rolling smoothly into oakland this morning. caltran is continuing to open a new detour. caltran closed down several lanes around midnight in preparation for the switch over. at one point traffic had to be stopped for about 10 minutes. overnight, bart once again started repairs on electrical work on the tube. anyone traveling is going to have to transfer trains at the 12th street station.

expect delays of up to 40 minutes, but bart should be back to normal today by 2:30 this afternoon. those same do tours will be -- detours will be in place tomorrow until about 2:30. and oakland cemetery will open its gates to 2 enthusiastic new people today. the new jones town massacre memorial features four granite plaques. among the names, jim jones. the inclusion of his name has sparked outrage from so many family members. a student at a sacramento area high school has been booked into juvenile hall after bringing a gun to campus. police arrested the student on friday afternoon after getting the call from school administrators. officers found the student in class, with an unloaded gun in

his backpack. just before 10:30 this morning, president obama is expected to arrive in joplin, missouri, and walk through the devastation left behind of that f5 tornado. the president is making the trip hours after arriving home from his six day european tour. while in missouri, mr. obama will attend a memorial service for the victims at missouri southern state university. the white house says the president is expected to deliver some brief remarks. the death toll from the tornado remains in flux. officials say 139 people were killed by the storm that hit last sunday. state officials say the death toll is at 126 and that they have no reason to raise the number. if it is determined at 139, this would make this tornado season the deadliest since 1953. for a short time, after estimated 400 themes were in

office in february. mubarak is currently awaiting trial on charges of corruption. fans celebrated barcelona's league in the champion league final. 50,000 people flooded the streets of barcelona hours after the soccer team beat manchester united. fire investigators are trying to find the cause of an explosion at a chemical plant in north carolina. they show the power plant when they erupted. fortunately, no one was inside when the plant erupted. people who live nearby were told to evacuate. they have since been allowed to return and no one was hurt. passengers were forced to evacuate a plane after the

landing gear malfunctioned and burst into flames. all of the passengers and crew were quickly evacuated, and firefighters were able to put out the fire with foam spray. >> there was a big bang, and a bunch of small flames. >> then you started to smell rubber and the cabin got smoky. >> maintenance crews will evaluate it as they search for the source of that malfunction. another fire, this one inside dodger stadium forced fans to move seats during the game. it happened last night as the dodgers were taking on the marlins. a los angeles fire department responded, and found a fire burning in a confined storage area, they quickly put out the flames and fans were never evacuated, and the game was not delayed. the fbi says the so-called geezer bandit has struck again.

agents say the man robbed a bank in san diego on friday. this is the 14th bank across california the fbi says he has robbed. he is usually armed during those robberies. >> very discreet in the way he conducts his robberies. oftentimes, the only people that know what's happening are the victim tellers. and the geezer bandit. >> a 20,000-dollar reward is offered leading to his capture and conviction. two earthquakes shook the bay area yesterday. later in the day, around 4:00 p.m., a 3.7 magnitude hit the north bay. no damage was reported. a very minor earthquake caused a big scare in philadelphia. >> people up the street that way. people down the street had a way. everyone was coming out of their house.

>> hundreds of people reported feeling the ground shake from what they thought was an explosion. the u.s. geological survey says it initially wasn't an earthquake, but they revised it, and said it was an earthquake of 1.7 magnitude. >> california has this intensity of earthquake, gosh, i don't know? what every other hour or so? >> no injuries or damages were reported from that earthquake. astronauts on the space shuttle endeavour are getting ready to head home. the six man crew has ended its mission and will undock from the international space station tonight. endeavour will be retired to a museum. a closely watched murder trial out of florida will

two people are dead and several others are injured, following a tour bus crash in

washington. two passengers on the bus were killed, another person was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. several other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. the bus was carrying more than a dozen soccer fans from a game in seattle. jurors in the casey anthony murder trial are getting a break today for the murder trial. anthony is accused of killing her daughter, caylee. her mother broke down in tears when she was shown a photograph. >> when you called her, what did you say to her? >> where's caylee? >> was that the first question? >> yes, sir. >> what was her response? >> i don't know.

we begin 8:30 this morning, with news from overnight. a woman shot and killed in san jose in the city's 22nd homicide of the year. >> that's two more than the city of san jose saw all of last year. allie rasmus is live with the increased work load. >> reporter: san jose spokesmen say their detectives still have a lot of work to do in this homicide that happened last night. they don't have a motive in this case, and they also say some of the witnesses that were there are not cooperating with them. two people were shot in san jose last night, and a 35-year- old woman died from her gunshot wounds. it was around 10:30 last night when police arrived on ambler way in san jose after getting reports of gunfire in the area. when officers arrived, they found the woman in her car,

suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. a san jose man walked into a hospital, also suffering from gunshot wounds. they discovered that 20-year- old man had been near the same address on ambler way. a fatal stabbing claimed the life of an 18-year-old man. to put all of these numbers in perspective, last year, san jose police investigated 20 homicides. >> they a lot of times will work straight through, 24, 48 hours. they literally sat at their

desk and followed up on leads. sometimes go home and shower and change, and come back to the office with no sleep. it is taxing on the officers. >> jose garcia talking about the increased work load on san jose police. >> reporter: police say they don't know the relationship, if there is one between the 20- year-old and 35-year-old woman who were the gunshot victim. they don't know if this is a gang related crime, or some sort of a domestic dispute. witnesses aren't cooperating with them, so they're urging anyone with information to come forward. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police are searching for the person who stabbed a teenager to together, just days after his high school graduation. police found vincent lee near king road, and schulte drive

south of blossom hill road. the road was closed at 10:00 for the investigation. alcohol is not a factor in the incident. two people are recovering from injuries this morning, after their suv went down an embankment in petaluma. the accident happened yesterday afternoon. a woman in the suv had to be pulled 40 feet off the slope in a rescue basket. a man was able to walk out with help of rescuers. highway patrol says there have been two other crashes in the same spot in just the past two months. police say 24-year-old jesus guzman was walking past the area when he was he was shot. police say more arrests are possible. traffic is rolling smoothly

off the bay bridge into oakland this morning after call trains worked overnight to open up a new detour. all lanes are now back open, caltrans had closed down several lanes around midnight in preparation for this switch over. at one point, traffic had to be stopped for just about 10 minutes. the two year detour is in place so that work can be completed on the oakland touchdown of the new eastern span. the chp has released the numbers from the first part of their holiday weekend crackdown. they made 52 arrests into early saturday morning. that's down from 58 last year. so far, this year, there have been no alcohol related fatalities. phillip and nancy garrito

will be sentenced this afternoon. one week has passed since los angeles police arrested a suspect in the beating of giants fan bryan stow. now the family says they have another reason to be hopeful. the family posted an update on the website saying at the should be off his seizure medication last week. stow is now being treated for blood clots that have formed in his leg. a public ceremony will be held in granville to celebrate the life of alison grayless. it appears she took her own life. video cameras showed her walking onto the golden gate bridge monday morning, but never showed her walking off. a 143 idea memorial day tradition will continue

tomorrow in san francisco. the city's official ceremony will take place at the national cemetery in the presidio. a parade will take place first at montgomery and sheridan. the formal ceremony will follow at 11:00. there will also be music beginning at 12:45 in the afternoon. an hour long tribute to fallen soldiers will start at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. several people will speak before the c5 aircraft from travis air force base performs a flyover. services will end with a 15 gun salute and the laying of wreaths for p.o.w.'s. federal and state courts and offices are closed. city and county offices are closed. banks won't be open either.

missouri, obviously, the bible belt, and people are holding church services, some even in parking lots because their church was destroyed. this is happening all over joplin. i want to step aside now and give you a live look at the st. mary's catholic church up there on the hill behind me. this has really become an icon, not only in this community, but around the country, as this image has been broadcast around the world in the last week or so, because you can see that the sanctuary itself is all blown apart, but what remains is the tall cross, right there in the center. i believe we have a picture of what the st. mary's catholic church looked like a week ago, before this ef5 tornado swept through. it is just complete devastation. there is also a parochial school attached to the church,

where some 210 students attend, and the church is still trying to iron out exactly what they will do with those children. but 100 people remain unaccounted for in joplin at this hour. >> that is a dramatic picture behind you. do we know the story behind the american flag that also flies there? certainly, that is a poignant contrast as well. >> reporter: we see these flags flying all over joplin. people, just average joe residents will put flags in front of this business, in front of homes, in front of areas where there is no foundation. people just passing through the area wanted to come here and just help. >> you see that determination. are you seeing a lot of rebuilding? certainly, we have to focus on

the search and recovery. >> reporter: they say they're going to rebuild this town. it is going to be put together board by board. when you talk about a six mile wide debris path. we've also had issues issues -- and today it is very windy. the sun is shining, but we're having gusts up to 40 miles an hour today. there is also a shortage of heavy equipment in the area as well. the rebuilding effort is being hampered a little bit, but the spirit of this community is shining through, and that is what is most important. >> thank you, reporting for us in joplin, missouri this morning. thanks so much. police in joplin, missouri, say scammers are taking advantage of hard hit areas,
