>> reporter: this is video of the smoke rising taken earlier today. for the past week and a half she has been teaching journalism in afghanistan. today after classes they launched two deadly attacks near the school. shortly after a vehicle with a gunner in the back came to the school. >> found us and said let's go, let's go. and we grabbed everything we had and ran into the car and we -- lights and sirens to the consulate. >> reporter: these are photos she took as she waited. she was fortunate that a representative from the u.s. embassy was observing her teach classes today. officials knew because they were american they could be targets. >> it was frightening but i knew i was in the best possible care. i was relieved to see the

americans coming to look for me. that was nice. >> reporter: four people are dead and dozens are injured. it is one of the areas where security responsibility will be handed over to afghanistans in july. >> think this threw and see if i can step outside my hotel long enough to make an educated decision. >> reporter: the embassy offered her to go stay at a military base but she chose to go back to her hotel where there are armed guards on every floor. ktvu channel 2 news. u.s. troops in afghanistan remember their fallen comrades this memorial day. members of the army held a candlelight vigil to honor the 1500 u.s. service members

killed in afghanistan since back in 2001. thousands made their way to san francisco presidio's 143rd memorial day ceremony, honoring those who gave their lives. david stevenson live where there is still lot of activity. >> reporter: even at this hour a steady stream of visitors continue to flow in to commemorate memorial day. 2500 people came to the national cemetery to pay tribute to bay area military men and women. >> important that my son understand the sacrifices that people have made in their lives for the defense of the country. >> it is overwhelming because i have a sister in the military and i wouldn't want to see her here. >> reporter: this year's ceremony marked the 70th

slowing to san francisco but that's probably people paying toll. interstate 280. quiet for a monday night. a lot of people choosing to stay home. staying home orer flying. this is san jose international airport. they expected an 11.5% increase in the amount of travelers this memorial day weekend compared to last year. bart service in the east bay got back to normal avermentness work caused delays. this was the scene a few hours ago. crews had shut down one track inside the tube to repair electric cables. that caused delayed of 20-40 minutes. work has ended for today but construction and delays will continue next weekend. drivers can expect delays beginning this week on part of

highway 100 won. some lanes will be closed to repave the roadway. that project begins wednesday. it is expected to be completed in september. the work will take place from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in the north bound lanes and 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. in the south bound direction. they are advising drivers to use alternate routes. >> reporter: people using the bay bridge are getting used to a new lane configuration. they finished work yesterday to clean up the place where it will connect into oakland. traffic is backed up on the bay bridge. this is anination. the eastbound lanes were moved to the right to open up in the middle. it is expected to be finished in 2013. video showing the scene just as two people were shot and kill last night. those two victims had five kids

between them. ktvu's john sasaki is in oakland with the video. >> reporter: this is where the gunfire rang out. four spots where bullets slammed into the wall. in this case it dug a hole and bounced on to the sidewalk and that's where i found this bullet. >> reporter: family and friends came to the scene in east oakland this afternoon and set up a memorial for the two people who died. >> still not real. still so much hurt, so much pain. >> reporter: last night the gunfire erupted. this is video that someone gave to us and you can see how chaotic the scene turned. >> we have silly people that don't care about hurting other people. >> reporter: from security cameras you can see the moment

from the database that could have helped identify the main suspect in the brian stow beating. some of giovanni ramirez tattoos were never recorded into the system. giovanni ramirez was arrested last week but charges haven't been filed. he is accused of beating san francisco giants' fan brian stow outside dodger stadium. investigators say the small fire at dodger stadium was a rekindling of a fire saturday night. both fires were in a storage area. paper products burned and no one was hurt. the cause is still being investigated. friends, family and police are staying mum about a nursing school student missing since friday. you expect to be using the sun screen but umbrellas are in the forecast, i will tell you when.

. california highway patrol is investigating two hit and run accidents. the cph says three cars crashed because another car was driving wrecklessly. investigators are still looking for witnesses. in a couple of hours it will be three days since a student vanished. friends of the woman say they are hoping for the best. ktvu's patty lee is live. >> reporter: this is the area where michelle hoang thi le was last seen. when a person disappears you see people handing out flyers but that is not the case here is that is by design. >> reporter: michelle hoang thi le's friends sent these photos in hopes that more information will increase the odds of finding her safe. >> she is missed and loved and

hours messages on her facebook page are becoming more frantic from i want to have a sleep over to you are breaking my heart right now, come home soon. reporting live, patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. police are investigating two separate killings this weekend. melissa was shot to death saturday night. family members say she was the mother of five boys and that she may have been shot by mistake. a nephew in the car was also shot and briefly hospitalized. hours before that is teen was stabbed to death outside his home on the east side. police found the victim near king road early saturday morning and died at the hospital. last week he celebrated his 18 18th birthday. the stabbing is gang related. mow arrests have been made.

wildfire that threatened homes is almost out tonight. firefighters are watching hot spots after containing the fire yesterday. it broke out friday near lake isabella. thousands of people had to evacuate. no one was injured. people in joplin, missouri got help in cleaning up after the deadly tornado. >> take the day off or give a hand to the people who need it. >> an elephant and its trainers pitched in. the circus was supposed to put on a show today but the town is in ruins after the tornado so the crew brought its biggest perform out to help haul debry. >> coming out here lending a hand, whatever we can do to help. >> they are here to help. >> the parking lot where the circus was supposed to go up is now a make-shift hospital.

the tornado caused damage to the medical center in joplin, missouri. water spouts were spotted off the coast of australia. you can see columns of air swirling, blasting along the surface. strong winds and heavy rains hit over the weekend. over to bill martin, what are we looking at? >> more of the same, unsettled weather. not a horrible holiday weekend but not the weather you would expect. look at this, here comes another weather system. this pattern is dropping in over the bay area, has been repeating itself now for months. this pattern has been going on since fall of last year. november, december, january. we got an active pacific. we are coming up on june this

. the highway patrol enforcement program will be wrapping up in the next several hours. so far this memorial day weekend it was safer than last year. friday night till this morning officers arrested 184 impaired drivers. that's down from 203 from last year. no fatallies. last year there was one. the program runs through midnight tonight. pg&e crews are getting ready for testing in two cities. the cruise will first vent the gas from the lines. that will happen tomorrow in newark and wednesday in san

ballot. the school board will consider $4 million in budget cuts wednesday to close a budget gap. they already cut $7 million but negotiations are still underway on some of the cuts. to meet a deadline they must consider other cuts, including text book reductions and the elimination of a risk manager position. making sure your kids get enough sleep could help them avoid obesity. researchers found that children who got less sleep were more likely to have a high body mass index. the next step is to look at ways to help kids sleep longer. new mothers who take off three months or more from work are twice as likely to breast- feed after three months.
