i'm maureen naylor. pam cook is off today. it's tuesday may 31st. let's start with a look at weather and traffic. for that we turn to steve paulson. we have cloudy skies. light rain made it to the north. the beat goes on. now temperatures today will be in the 60s and in fact if anything we may even see some more rain later in the week. we'll talk about that coming up in about five minutes. here's sal. steve, interstate 880 traffic looking pretty good driving past the coliseum with no major issues. also this morning we have a look at san francisco northbound 101 traffic is off to a good start. now back to the desk. topping our news two people are in the hospital following an early morning fire in san francisco. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us live from the bay view district with more to tell us on what investigators are saying about any cause. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning, maureen. those fire investigators just finished going through this house here behind me trying to answer that question. they were looking for any clues

as to what may have caused this fire. meanwhile the baaal onchief says the firefighters had to spend the last hour removing everything inside the family's home garage. all the household appliances, clothing, old furniture stored in there. and fire battalion chief out here says they had to do that to make sure there was no chance of this fire rekindling. now this fire started in the garage. you can see they have firefighters just put a tarp over it right now. there's a family of five that live in this home and the fire started around 2:00. the firefighters say that none of the people who live in this house are children. they're all adult family members, but two of the people from the home had to be transferred to san francisco general hospital. although at this point firefighters say they can't tell me whether those people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation or burns. firefighters also brought out of the home and tried to revive the family dog. unfortunately that dog did not survive. again, fire investigators are looking into what may have

caused this fire. you can see the last of them kind of looking through the front of the home. a couple of them in the doorway he's just about to shut the door on this home. firefighters say they're pretty much wrapping up their work here but they don't know what may have caused this fire. however five people are now without a home because of it. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. time is 4:32. a young woman dead after a tragic early morning accident. happened just after 1:00 this morning on northbound 101 that marin county. the 22-year-old woman hit the guardrail on the right side of the freeway and her car came to rest in one of the lanes. that's when it was hit by a van traveling about 65 miles per hour. she was killed by the impact. four passengers were in the van treated released at the scene. firefighters say the original crash may have broken the lights on the woman's car making it hard for other drivers to see. meanwhile chp investigating the overnight death of a pedestrian happened just after 11:00 last night on the san

thomas expressway. a car struck and killed a man in his 20s. chp says the driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators. it's still not clear why the young man was walking on the busy roadway. the accident shut down all southbound lanes on the expressway for almost two hours. time is 4:33. sheriff deputies in contra costa county this morning are looking for suspects in a deadly overnight shooting in rodeo. officers were called to the scene near california street around 11:00 last night. they found a young man lead on the street. he was pronounced dead at the scene. at this point no word on what led up to the deadly shooting. ktvu's jade hernandez will have more from rodeo coming up in our next half hour. the family of a missing nursing student is now offering a $20,000 reward for her safe return. lee's brother and other family members talked to reporters last night at thizer hospital in hayward. that's the last known place that anyone saw or heard from

the 26-year-old student. the lee family is revealing few details about the investigation, but michael lee says his sister is responsible. >> she always calls me to remind me that it's my dad's birthday and i should call and let him know. she always calls me -- that it's mother's day and i should call my grandma. >> police say lee planned to drive to reno with a friend after class but her car was found locked on a nearby street. oakland police are still searching for the gunman who shot and kill today people and left another person in critical condition. we first told you about the triple shooting on 88th avenue and international boulevard on sunday's 10:00 news. exclusive video obtained by ktvu shows the shooting and the chaotic aftermath. 28-year-old kenny and 30-year-

old eric bush were killed. friends and family have set up memorials to honor their loved ones. >> i rushed out here i couldn't believe it. she in a better place now. i don't know. what's that about? [ indiscernible ] save somebody's life. stop all this madness. >> kennedy leaves behind two children. eric bush was a father of three. san jose's police chief says detectives are making progress in solving two homicides in the city this weekend. 35-year-old melissa shot to death saturday night while driving. family members say it may have been a case of mistaken identity. she leaves behind five boys ranging in age from 5 to 17. friends say she was dedicated to keeping her children away from street violence. a teenager was stabbed to death on saturday morning in the city in an unrelated killing. san jose police have the city's homicide count at 22 this year. that doesn't include two murders at the san jose state campus which has its own police

force. san jose had 20 homicides in all last year. two young children recovering this morning after falling out of a second story window in petaluma. firefighters were called to a home on baywood drive near lake view highway around 6:30 last night. they say a 2-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy were in a bedroom and somehow fell through a window and onto a bush below. one family member -- the family members say they didn't see it happen but heard crying outside. to be on the safe side one child was air lifted to oakland children hospital. the other taken to santa rosa memorial hospital for observation. time is 4:37. this morning those against the glenn cove development plan in vallejo have a strong message. this is video of people camping outside the proposed construction site which they say is a burial site. they want to update the area with parking lot and bathrooms. at 8:00 this morning those against the planned development will meet at the recreation district office. they're demanding the district put the money towards a

different project or face further action. san francisco mayor ed lee unveils his first budget tomorrow. the city still faces a huge deficit. but mayor lee won't have to make drastic cuts this year. better than expected tax revenue and a slowly rebounding economy will make coming up with a spending plan for the city much easier this year. mayor newsom made massive layoffs, shut down fire station and made other big cuts during his final years in office due to the budget crisis. starting today it's going to get a lot more crowded on one part of the golden gate bridge. the bridge officials are starting a seismic retrofit today that will close a bicycle lane from the west sidewalk of the bridge for about four months. this means pedestrians will now have to share their side with bike riders. some cyclists we spoke with aren't happy about the extra traffic. >> people taking pictures and not paying attention. not aware of what's around them, what's happening near them. it's just going to be dangerous i think. >> once part of the project is completed a portion of the

pedestrian path on the east side of the bridge will be closed. that will take about four months as well. however, during that construction pedestrians will not be allowed on the bike side of the bridge. time is 4:38. and the bridge will be expected to be a little busier as it's the summer. get right to sal for a look at right now i'm assuming it's kind of quiet as people get back to work. it is quiet maureen. good morning to you. things doing well out there. update you on the fatal accident that happened just after 1:00 this morning. still have one lane of highway 101 shut downright after the redwood landfill. and they're doing the investigation. they need a flat bed tow truck to get rid of these badly damaged vehicles. again, one woman died at the scene. another person was injured in this crash on northbound 101 in novato. you can still expect delays in the northbound direction and southbound there may be some delays as well as people might be slowing to take a look at this. back to some live pictures now. this is the westbound bay bridge approach. and the traffic looks okay

coming up to the pay gates. also this morning we're looking at traffic that moves well in san jose starting off a nice commute 280 looks good getting up to highway 17 and beyond into the valley. at 4:39 let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. and rain has made it into the north bay. looks like it will make it for everybody today. the further south generally clouds and cool conditions. windy and breezy at times. to the north rain. cazadero observer has about .49. not all visible on the radar beam but it's falling. it's there. especially up towards mendocino county, northern napa county and sonoma county. here we go again. this is an unusually strong system and an even stronger one looks like it will move in on saturday. tenth of an inch or less for many locations. as you head north maybe a half inch to three quarters of an inch 15 to 30 miles per hour.

house walking off the surf line toward the great highway. he told us his -- he said he told his would-be rescuers he became separated from his board but was never in distress. the f.b.i.'s hoping to catch two bank robbers this morning. the unusual disguises they used during the takeover. plus thousands of people flock to florida beaches over the holiday weekend. but the unwanted souvenir hundreds ended up leaving with. good morning. westbound highway 4 off to a nice start heading up to the willow pass grade. we'll tell you more straight ahead.

cloudy skies. some rain. santa rosa's already picked up a tenth of an inch. north bay will see off and on rain and lighter amounts to the south. if you don't have rain it will be mostly cloudy and cool with highs in the 60s. time is 4:45. new this morning placer county sheriff deputies have arrested the man suspected of a triple homicide in loamiest. jeremy baker being held without bail at the placer county jail. investigators say he knew all three victims. a woman and man were found dead at a home saturday morning. a third victim later died at the hospital. police say they were all shot. they have not released a motive for the killings. grief counselors will be at a fresno elementary school today after a 2-year-old accidentally shot and killed his 6-year-old sister over the weekend. it happened on sunday. the fresno police say the 2- year-old walk speed a room with

the gun and accidentally fired the shot killing his sister. two other kids witnessed the shooting. now the district attorney's office will have to decide whether to prosecute the gun owner for not securing the weapon. afghan president says he will no longer allow nato air strikes on houses. the president's state comes after recent air strikes that mistakenly kill add group of women and children. nato says it never carries out air strikes without afghan coordination and approval. the nato spokesman says the president's statement will have no immediate effects on tactics. san jose state university journalism professor who is a former reporter here at ktvu is caught up in the violence in afghanistan. for the past week and a half she's been teaching journalism classes on a university in the city of an area that's been relatively peaceful until yesterday when taliban insurgents launched two deadly attacks killing four people. she says the osteogens ltd . sent an armored car to pick her

up from the university. >> actually came up to the university, found us and said let's go, let's go, let's go. and we grabbed everything we had and ran into the car and we sped lights and sirens to the consulate. >> the photos you're looking at are withins she took as she watched and wait the at the u.s. consulate for the next six hours. she says there's also stepped up security at her hotel. she has not yet decided whether she will come back early to the u.s. time is 4:47. the former chairman of one of egypt's major banks has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in new york city. police say they found the complaint against the 74-year- old businessman to be credible. he's the former chairman of egypt's bank of alexandra. this follows the arrest of the former chief of the international monetary fund on similar charges. the f.b.i.'s looking for a man and woman who disguised themselves as nuns to rob a bank. these are surveillance pictures

from the bank in suburban chicago. the man and woman walked in sunday afternoon with weapons and ordered employees to open the vault. no customers were inside at the time. police are not disclosing how much money was taken during the robbery. no shots were fired and no one was hurt. detectives say they have some leads but nothing concrete. victims of last week's deadly tornado in joplin, missouri, could soon be offered a new place to live. federal emergency officials say people whose homes were destroyed could be put in rental homes about an hour away from joplin. they are also considering bringing in trailers if enough homes aren't available. residents are also being given the option of finding their own place to live while they rebuild. the devastated city of joplin got help cleaning up from an unexpected source. elephants from the circus helped clear debris. they were supposed to put on a show yesterday but the may 22nd tornado left much of joplin in ruins. some were appreciative of the help, but others thought the

animals were being exploited. more than 130 people were killed in the tornado and 29 people are still missing. there were emotional ceremonies all across the bay area this weekend honoring the men and women who died defending america. ♪ [ music ] >> one of the largest memorial day ceremonies was at the golden gate national cemetery in san bruno. it included remarks from one of the original maverick republicans former congressman. a decorated korean war veteran says all americans should be called to serve their country. >> perhaps some sort of national service should exist for the children of the privilege and wealthy so they can serve and share the pearls of combat. >> he points out 12,000 americans have died defending their country since the draft ended 40 years ago. he says it's unfair that less than 1% of the american families now bear that terrible burden. time is 4:49.

thousands flocked to florida beaches over the memorial day weekend and many of them left with jelly fish stings. more than 800 people were stung this weekend along a stretch of central florida's ocean front. on shore winds are being blamed for the high number of jelly fish washing ashore. people were warned though to stay out of the water. >> as i was looking him up he was yelling ouwie and sitting on the other side screaming she got stung. >> they were stocked with vinegar which neutralizes the sting. time is 4:50. she sued over a red light camera ticket. the discovery a bay area woman made that won her case. and a flock of sheep caused commotion near san diego. how they were eventually coralled.

patrol overnight and maximum enforcement numbers over the weekend will be available this morning. as of yesterday morning 184 impaired drivers have been arrested. that compares to 203 arrests last year. also as of yesterday there have been no fatal crashes. that compares to one fatality last year. the maximum enforcement period ended at midnight. one woman's fight against red light cameras could be good news for other ticketholders. one year ago she made a right turn at an intersection in napa county. then the red light camera flashed and soon she received the pictures. and a ticket for $499. she fought the ticket and lost. but when she appealed, the judge took her side and dismissed the fine. >> so then i started to google and research a bit different websites and that and then i also was able to down load my pictures and my video. and i watched it. and it just didn't seem right. >> then she found out the company who made the red light camera was getting paid based on how many ticket that is

camera issued. this type of contract violates state law. right now about one in every 100 driver fight their red light ticket. she hopes her win will encourage more people to challenge the system. time is 4:53. more people heading back to work today. let's get right to sal to see how it will be heading back from the long weekend. a lot of people, maureen, are going to think this is a monday. it seems like a monday on a tuesday and they're back to work and right now it's pretty light out there. go and take a look at westbound approach to the bay bridge. it looks pretty good. no problems on the upper deck of the bay bridge. lower deck looks good. westbound san mateo traffic looks fine all the way out to highway 101. and if you're driving on the hayward union city to fremont commute that looks okay. in the south bay right now we're off to a nice start with the freeways there looking very nice. if you are a south bay commuter we're looking for you to drop us a line. update some of these traffic times. go to ktvu.com and drop me an e- mail or tweet. 4:54. let's go to steve.

thank you, sal. rain to the north and partly cloudy south. this system will continue to sit here for about two days giving the north bay more rain than anybody else and then kind of a showery light pattern as you move south. but it's there. the system is beginning to move in. in fact it's already left some decent totals. look for about a tenth of an inch or less. maybe .01 or .02 towards san jose. winds cranking up a little bit. not too bad. temperatures far below average. cazadero picked up almost a half inch. mt. st. helena .17. harbor .03. this system has a little bit to it you can see it's right there. south of that there's some breaks in the clouds. out towards sacramento and up into the sierra another round of some rain and also some more snow. you can see that system kind of picking up in intensity there in lake county. a lot of it doesn't show up but it's there. i say the rain doesn't show it. it's below radar beam. 50 to 55. temperatures are stuck due to cloud cover. low will sit here and spin.

probably all the way into thursday morning. mostly cloudy, cool and breezy. and rain today and mainly north gives way to showers and possible thunderstorms tomorrow. highs will only be in the 6 0z or upper 50s closer to the coast. so mostly cloudy. some off and on rain. heaviest i'd say north of golden gate. wind to the coast and higher elevations about 30 miles an hour. 50s and 60s. i mean everybody it's going to be a cool, cool day for many that should be about 15 degrees warmer than that. chilly with showers continuing possible thunderstorms into wednesday. thursday, cool and breezy. friday increasing clouds. mostly sunny in the morning and mostly cloudy at night. looks like moderate to heavy rain possible on saturday. all right. thank you, steve. there was an unexpected memorial day event at one southern california city. a flock of sheep kept police on a slow speed chase through the streets for more than an hour. they managed to get past roadblocks until an animal control officer finally settled them into an unsuspecting homeowner's backyard. >> i certainly didn't expect to wake up this morning and find

seven sheep in my yard. >> all seven sheep were funneled out of the backyard and into a temporary corral until a trailer could be brought in. they were take ton a ranch where they'll be taken care of until the owners come to claim them. there was no damage and no one was hurt. neighbors say it will give them a way to remember this holiday weekend. time 4:56. two people sent to the hospital after a fire erupted in a san francisco building. how many more people were forced from their homes coming up in a live report. and the search continues for contra costa county for suspects after a deadly overnight shooting where investigators are focusing this morning. @
