death leaves quite an obstacle for an east bay sheriff's office. we just spoke to a neighbor who heard the gunfire. five people in san francisco are without a home after a fire damages their house. we'll show you some of the work firefighters had to do after the blaze was out. a 22-year-old woman is dead after a tragic early morning accident on highway 101. the frightening series of events that led to her death. summer is officially three weeks away but it may feel more like three months away with this cloudy cool pattern. mornings on 2 right now. well, good morning to you. welcome to a brand new day. it's tuesday may 31st. i'm dave clark. good morning. i'm maureen naylor. pam cook is off today. let's get right to steve for a look at this unusual weather on this tuesday. >> on the morning news as i said. the second hour we do have more of another low dropping in. that means a very cool pattern for this time of year.

mostly cloudy, cool, breezy. there has been some decent rain especially in the north bay. highs today way below average. upper 60s for some and off and on rain mostly cloudy, temperatures though staying far below average for this time of year. here's sal. steve, right now traffic on the golden gate bridge looks good coming could be to the toll plaza and through southern marin. it is a nice drive. also if you are driving on the bay bridge westbound small delays at toll plaza you can see traffic on the bridge itself looks good. 6:01. back to the desk. thank you, sal. we begin this morning with one man who was shot and killed in rodeo last night. and ktvu channel 2 news reporter jade hernandez just spoke with a neighbor who heard the gunshots. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. the sheriff's office canvassed this area thoroughly last night and they are speaking to a few people who may have heard something like the man we heard from just a few moments ago. listen. >> got a man down in the corner and only one officer came in here out of the whole police station with his car up the other side of the block while the others waited at the gate.

i don't know if they were instructed to do so, but by the time they were ready to take action everybody was ready to take their own. >> reporter: we've also learned within the past hour the man shot to death may be from this rodeo neighborhood. so far no witnesses to the shooting death. and we understand that the man probably was shot multiple times while sitting in his van. now the sheriff's office says this morning that it was a white van parked near the intersection in this neighborhood. investigators found no drugs or guns in the van and don't believe at this point that the young man killed last night was doing anything illegal at the time of his death. the sheriff's office says they responded after 10:40 last night after several calls about shots fired. i asked the sergeant we spoke to here on scene whether this was a drive biand he told me it appears the shooter or shooters might have been on foot. they don't have any descriptions of suspects. he could not go on camera to update us about the shooting but investigators will stay out

here for another couple hours. there are still investigates out here right now. we're live this morning still blocked off. several squad cars out here this morning. several investigators. and of course this investigation is still ongoing. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:02. a young woman has died after a tragic early morning accident. this happened just after 1:00 a.m. on northbound 101 in marin county. just look at these pictures. a 22-year-old woman her car hit the guardrail on the right side of the freeway then her car stopped in one of the lanes. that's when it was smashed into by a van going about 65 miles an hour. she was killed by the impact. four passengers in the van were treated and released at the scene. firefighters say the original crash may have broken the car lights on the woman's car and it was hard for other drivers to see her. meantime a pedestrian died on a south bay expressway just hours ago and a chp

investigation continues. now this happened in campbell just after 11:00 last night on the san tomas expressway. southbound lanes were shut down for about two hours. police say a man in his 20s was hit and killed by a car. the driver did stop immediately and is cooperating with investigators. we still don't know why the young man was walking on that busy road. well, this morning an investigation is underway into an early morning house fire in san francisco. two people had to go to the hospital. ktvu's allie rasmus joining us live. she's in the city's bay view district with the latest. allie. >> reporter: and two of the people who lived here who went to the hospital they went to san francisco general hospital and firefighters won't tell us the extent of their injuries whether it's from smoke inhalation or burns. this is the home where the fire happened. you can see it started in the garage. the garage is tarped up but you can see a big black smoke line above it. after this fire was put out, firefighters had to spend about an hour moving out all this stuff that had been stored in

the garage. and you're taking a look at it. it's all out here on the front lawn and driveway. there's some clothing, some furniture, some household appliances. firefighters had to do that to make sure nothing remained in the garage that could rekindle this fire. now this all started around 2:00 this morning. firefighters had to deal with some heavy smoke in the building. about 50 firefighters were called out to put out the fire. the battalion chief told us some of the challenges involved in fighting the fire. >> well, it's very difficult fire to fight here. you can see we had the overhead wires where the truck company's going to have to deploy aerials or ground ladders and also the homes are quite close and may have jumped to the adjoining building. >> reporter: and fire investigators went into the home, did a survey trying to figure out what may have caused this fire. it's still under investigation. we don't have an answer to that question. firefighters also did bring out of the building and they tried to revive a dog that had been in the home.

a total of five adults lived in this home. one apparently had a dog. firefighters tried to bring out the dog and revive it unfortunately that dog died of smoke inhalation. live in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the time is 6:05. family of missing nursing student michelle lee is now offering a $20,000 reward for her safe return. lee's brother, michael, and other family members talked to reporters last night at the hospital in hayward. that's the last place anyone saw or heard from the 26-year- old. the lee family's revealing few details about the investigation. michael lee says his sister is a responsible person. >> she's not a bad person. she didn't deserve to have this happen to her. i just want her home. >> again, police don't know what happened. they say le planned to drive to reno with a friend after class but her car was found locked on a nearby street.

michelle le's school released a statement about her disappearance. it says "the entire samuel merit university community is deeply concerned about the disappearance of our nursing student, michelle le, the university staff remains in contact with the family and the hayward police department. we continue to hope for the best in this difficult situation ." time now 6:06. well, the suspect in the bryan stow beating case is due in court this week for a parole hearing. ramirez still has not been formally charged in the attack two months ago outside of dodgers stadium. authorities say they're holding this ex-con on a parole violation. that will give them more time to gather evidence in the bryan stow case. now ramirez's mother says her son would never go to dodgers stadium. >> my son is innocent from the bottom of my heart. >> reporter: what do you base that on? >> because i know my son. he doesn't like sports. he doesn't go to places like that. >> also the 10-year-old daughter of ramirez says she's willing to testify that she was with her father the day of the attack and she says they never

went to dodgers stadium. time is 6:07. san francisco mayor ed lee's expected to reveal his new budget tomorrow as the city faces a $306 million deficit. but the situation appears to be improving. the chronicle reports the city's $47 million more than it thought because of an increase in tax revenue. that number could actually be closer to $60 million when property tax revenues counted. city officials say the extra money should prevent major layoffs. time now 6:08. an effort is underway to turn part of hum bolt county into the emeralds. residents in southern hum bolt county want to create their own city because they're not getting their fair amount of county services. it's right in the middle of a large marijuana growing area. the name emerald city was chosen because of the color green relates to both money and marijuana. now supporters of the idea have to convince area officials that the proposed new city makes financial sense. time is 6:08. let's get right to sal on this

tuesday morning to see if traffic's starting to pick up as people head back to work. it's a little bit more crowded, maureen and dave, right now traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving to the bay bridge toll plaza. but certainly more people than yesterday. we're probably going to see a crowd a little later on. they usually turn the metering lights on about 6:15. also this morning's commute looks okay on northbound 101 approaching the 80 split in san francisco. no problems on the 280 extension. looking at oakland highway 24 looks good coming in from orinda. traffic on 880 southbound still has not become heavy heading south to the south bay. 6:09. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. and cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. some rain has made it about san francisco, oakland out to crockett. our observer picked up .03 in crockett and north. so today rain to the north. more so say north bay. and then far lesser to the south. still a mostly cloudy day. tomorrow mostly cloudy. we continue the theme here of showers, possible thunderstorms as a low moves over us.

time now 6:14. well eight top libyan military officers, five of them generals, defected to italy. they held a news conference in rome. they called on their fellow officers to join them in backing the rebels calling for an end to moammar gadafi's rule. reportedly the generals were among a group of 120 army officers who left libya over the last couple of days. nato air strikes in afghanistan over the weekend

inadvertently killed nine people. most of them small children. ktvu's allison burns is live in our washington d.c. newsroom with the warning deaths have prompted from afghan's president. allison. >> reporter: that's right. afghan president delivered a fiery speech overnight just hours after those nato air strikes killed several small children. he said he has told nato commanders hundreds of times to stop striking private homes. he said we see nato from the point of view of an ally. if they don't stop air strikes on afghan homes, their presence in afghanistan will be considered as an occupying force and against the will of the afghan people. the strikes yesterday in hell men province were ordered after came under fire. civilian casualties are becoming too common. air strikes and night raids have intensified in recent months because nato commanders see them as a very effective weapon against insurgents who hide among civilians.

this morning nato says it will continue the strikes when necessary. he's threatening action if the raids don't stop but it's unclear what that action might be. the u.n. says the vast majority of civilian deaths in afghanistan are the result of insurgent attacks, not nato strikes. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:15. the f.b.i. is busy searching for a man and woman who disguised themselves as catholic nuns and robbed a bank. look at the bank surveillance pictures here. this is the tcf bank in suburban chicago. the man and woman walked in with their weapons, ordered employees to open up the bank vault. no customers were there at the time. police aren't telling us how much money was stolen during the robbery. we can tell you no shots were fired. no one was hurt. detectives say they do have some leads, but so far nothing concrete. time is 6:16. this morning emergency teams in

mendocino county will resume their search for a missing diver. the coast guard says he disappeared saturday afternoon while diving with another man. they rescued his friend just hours after receiving the first distress call. authorities have not yet released the names of the two divers, but both men are from southern california. time now 6:16. singer sean kingston moved from the trauma unit to intensive care at a hospital in miami. the 21-year-old singer was badly hurt. he crashed a jet ski into a bridge over the weekend. that bridge right there. kingston and a fellow passenger were both a female passenger were thrown into the water. two people in a nearby boat saw it as it happened and helped rescue both kingston and the young woman. a spokesperson for sean says he's in stable condition. his family is grateful for all of the support. prosecutors in santa clara county may soon throw out several dozen dui cases all

because of the faulty breathalyzer. we first told you about the problems with the breathalyzer earlier this month. the manufacturing glitch can cause an inaccurate reading. now a review of more than 800 dui cases in santa clara county shows 42 cases may have to be dropped. that's because those cases lack other evidence usually used to get convictions. time is 6:17. this morning sarah palin's believed to be heading to philadelphia as she continues her political mystery tour. former alaska governor is keeping the press in the dark about her exact schedule as she tours the country. reporters and cameras surrounded her during a stop in washington d.c. yesterday. she looked and sounded like a candidate, but she won't say if she's officially in the race for the white house. >> americans are ready for a true change. >> she says she feels the crop of republican contenders is very strong and she's vowing to do anything possible to stop the re-election of president obama. time is now 6:18.

if you're driving towards sea lianas expect delays on highway 101. starting today new traffic signals and ramps will be installed. that's going to close part of the highway near airport boulevard. cal trans is detouring drivers to nearby abbott street and san board road. then you can get back on highway 101. this construction job will be finished later this year. that can be busy during the busy holiday travel. but let's get right to sal now for a look at more close tore home see how the roads are doing this morning. >> they're okay. they're getting more crowded right now as you're driving around the bay area. you're going to notice it southbound 101 marin county traffic looks okay heading down to the central san rafael area. no sign of showers just yet. but steve says they might appear in the north bay. we'll talk to them in just a moment. this is a look at 237 in the south bay it's dry the traffic is not really picked up yet. i want to take you to the golden gate bridge because starting today the west sidewalk of the golden gate bridge will close for seismic work until september. that's four months.

now the west sidewalk we're looking down at the golden gate bridge the west sidewalk here would be on the right. we're looking at southbound 101 which is on the right. so the west sidewalk is on your right. on the left is the sidewalk which is the eastern sidewalk. pedestrian and bicyclists will have to share that sidewalk for the next four months. and some people are saying that will be a challenge. we'll keep following this story. 6:19. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. cloudy to mostly cloudy skies and some rain has made it to the north bay and also down to about san francisco, oakland, out to crockett, vallejo, benicia. it will be another cool day. that's a given for everybody with highs only in the upper 60s for many. and some of this rain will continue to kind of flirt with us as we head into not only later today but also tomorrow as the low inches closer it's going to settle into northern california. nothing too heavy yet unless you're up towards parts of the russian river and lake county and mendocino county where about a quarter of an inch to over a half inch has fallen. .01 or trace farther south you

good morning. right now traffic on the golden gate bridge looks pretty good heading south. you can see traffic is moving well across that iconic span all the way down to san francisco out of marin county. it is 6:25. let's go back to the desk. pretty sight. thank you, sal. a preschoolteacher in mexico's been recognized for her courage when gunfire rang out near her classroom. martha led her class in song friday after telling them to lay on the floor and stay down. she was praised by mexican authorities for her ability to keep her students calm. five people were killed in that shootout. none of the students was hurt. police in san jose say two teenagers could be responsible for severely beating and robbing a man. the two teens were arrested yesterday morning after crashing a stolen car at will we are and south capitol avenues. then police were told a 31-year- old man was found severely beaten and unconscious at a

nearby apartment complex. police say the teens had property belonging to that man and the car was stolen from the same apartment complex. the man is expected to fully recover from his injuries. time now 6:26. well, the japanese earthquake and tsunami in march appears to have damaged the u.s. economy a lot more than we expected. analysts say the impact that disaster in japan is having on the auto industry is low asking the u.s. economic recovery. factory shut downs and problems with getting auto parts slowed vehicle production. hitting all the makers in detroit especially hard. business there was just starting to recover when the disaster in japan hit in march. investigations underway into a deadly shooting in rodeo. why police are having trouble piecing together what happened. this morning the family of a missing nursing student is desperate to find her. hear their plea and what they're now offering to the public. also the opening bell's about to ring on wall street.

the time is 6:30. in other news this morning one man is dead after an overnight shooting in rodeo. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez joins us live with why investigators this morning are having trouble gathering information. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning, maureen. the problem is there are no witnesses. we can show you right now the tow truck has arrived to take away the white van involved in this deadly shooting. we've been told by the contra costa county sheriff's office this morning that they canvassed this area thoroughly last night and they are speaking to several people who may have heard something. this is what we know right now. several calls about shots fired came into dispatch around 10:15 last night. sheriff deputies arrived about 10:40. hercules police handled crowd control. one neighbor told us neighbors became very upset and the situation was extremely tense. a deputy found a white man in his 20s bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. paramedics could not save the man. the sheriff sergeant we spoke to says the man shot to death while sitting in his white van

may be from this rodeo neighborhood. investigators found no drugs or guns in the van and don't believe at this point that the young man killed was killed for any specific reason. now i asked the sergeant we spoke to on scene whether this was a drive bye shooting and he told me it appears the shooter or shooters may have been on foot. allot this point they don't have any description of suspects. the family feared for their lives in an apartment located about a block from the shooting. >> this whole place it almost turned to a riot. people were getting ready to turn on one another. it was a very sensitive situation. >> reporter: no arrests have been made. and right now it doesn't appear that there are any witnesses. i want to bring you back out live. this is the intersection right here. you can see there are several sheriffs officers out here right now combing the area now that it's daylight. several squad cars out here and

in fact at this road still blocked off at this hour. of course we'll continue to follow this investigation and bring you the latest. reporting live from rodeo, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. two people are in the hospital after an overnight fire in san francisco. now it started shortly after 2:00 a.m. at this home on holster avenue in the city's bay view district. investigators still looking for the cause of the fire but they say the fire started in the garage. it caused a big challenge for the more than 50 firefighters who race today this scene. >> it's very difficult fire to fight here. we had the overhead wires where the truck company's going to have to deploy aeroyells or ground ladders very quickly and also the homes are quite close to each other. so the flames could have jumped to the adjoining building. >> in all those firefighters really busy even after the fire was out. they had to move everything out of the cluttered garage because of the threat of the flames reigniting again. now as we told you two people had to go to the hospital.

we're not sure of the extent of their injuries. police in hayward are cardiologisting their search today for a missing nursing student michelle le. she hasn't been seen or heard from since friday. ktvu's live in hayward now to tell us about a new reward being offered for information that will hopefully lead to her safe return. >> reporter: well, dave, michelle le's father is flying in from vietnam. her family has come here from san diego and other parts of the bay area. they were all gathered here last night at the hospital in hayward where le takes nursing classes. they are making a plea to the public. le's family has pooled together their money and offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to her safe return. police say the 26-year-old was last seen on friday at the hospital. she told fellow nursing students she was planning to go to reno after a class but she left during a break and never came back. her car was found locked a few blocks away from the hospital. le's family is trying not to

think the worst. >> she's not a bad person. she doesn't deserve to have this happen to her. i just want her home. >> reporter: le's brother says she is responsible and for her to disappear like this it's just not like her. police do not have any hard evidence of foul play, but they want people to come forward with any information that they may have about this case. reporting live from hayward, ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:35. oakland police are still searching for the gunman who shot and killed two people and left another person in critical condition. ktvu was the first to show you the amateur video showing the shooting as it happened sunday night at 88th avenue and international boulevard. 28-year-old latoya kenny and 30- year-old eric bush were killed. friends and family have set up memorials to remember their

loved ones. >> they told me i rushed out here i couldn't believe it. she at a better place now i don't know. what's that about? keep on doing outreach and hopefully save somebody else and stop all this madness. >> latoya leaves behind two children, eric bush was a father of three. san jose's police chief says detectives are making some progress in solving two homicides in that city this weekend. 35-year-old melissa ross shot to death saturday night while driving on ambler way. family members say this may have been a case of mistaken identity. she leaves behind five young boys ranging in age from 5 to 17. her friends say she was dedicated to keeping her children away from violence in the streets. also a teenager was stabbed to death saturday morning in an unrelated killing. san jose police have the city's homicide count at 22 so far this year. that does not include two murders on the san jose state

campus which has its own police force. san jose had 20 homicides last year. time is 6:36. two young children are recovering this morning after falling out of a second story window in petaluma. firefighters were called to a home on baywood drive near lake view highway around 6:30 last night. they say a 2-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy were in a bedroom and somehow fell through a window screen and onto a bush below. family members did not see it happen but heard crying outside. to be on the safe side one child was air lifted to oakland's children hospital and the other taken to santa rosa memorial hospital for observation. time now 6:37. in just a couple of hours from now protesters of vallejo's glen cove development will take their demands straight to the people responsible. now here's some video of the people camping out at the proposed glen cove construction site. they claim this area is a sacred burial site. however the greater vallejo recreation district wants to build on the area with parking lots and bathrooms.

at 8:00 this morning the critics of that planned development will meet at their recreation district office. they're demanding that the district put the money towards a different project or face further action. the highway patrol's expected to release final numbers this morning showing the outcome of their maximum enforcement period from the holiday weekend. as of yesterday morning 184 impaired drivers have been arrested statewide. that compares to 203 arrests last year. also as of yesterday there have been no fatal crashes. and that compares to one fatality last year. maximum enforcement period ended at midnight. our time now 6:38. hey, sal, everyone behaving at the toll plaza? i think so. you know we've been watching it, dave and maureen, it's getting more crowded. but there are no crashes on the bridge. certainly more people than they were yesterday. it's a typical commute day. seems like a monday for a lot of folks. it's only about a 10 to 15 minute wait before you make it on to the bridge. once you're on the span it looks okay. if you're on the peninsula 101

and 2 0 look good down to the airport and beyond into redwood city and south bay with no major issues. people coming in from the east bay should find a nice drive from hayward, union city and fremont. reminder for people who use the golden gate bridge, car traffic will not be effected but the west sidewalk. we're looking at the golden gate bridge from marin county. that would be the sidewalk on your right will close today for four months for seismic work. the sidewalk on the left which is the eastern sidewalk will now be shared. you see the bike rider on the left there? he's going to be sharing, bicyclists will be sharing that sidewalk with pedestrians for the next four months. and some say that will pose a challenge. 6:39. let's go to steve. well, the weather poses a challenge. and mostly cloudy skies towards san jose though there are more breaks in the clouds. towards the north we're getting some decent rain. it's going to be another day where we have mostly cloudy skies, cool temperatures and some off and on rain. it tends to favor the north bay. pattern showing no signs of

well, good morning to you. welcome back. quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now at 6:45. a 22-year-old woman was killed in an early morning accident on northbound 101. firefighters say her car was stopped in one of the lanes. then she was hit by a van going about 65 miles an hour. two people are in the hospital now after an overnight fire in san francisco. it started shortly after 2:00 a.m. at a home on holster avenue in the bay view district. investigators say the fire started in the garage but they're not sure how the fire

started. san francisco's budget situation may be getting a little better. the city has $47 million more than originally thought because of higher tax revenue. that number may actually be closer to $60 million. the extra money may possibly prevent widespread layoffs. it's a quarter to 7:00. the form earl chairman of one of egypt's major banks has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in new york city. police say they found the complaint against the 74-year- old businessman to be credible. he's the former chairman of egypt's bank of alexandra. this follows the recent arrest of the former chief of the international monetary fund on similar charges. time now 6:46. san jose state university journalism professor who was a former reporter here at ktvu is caught in the violence in afghanistan. now for the past week and a half she's been teaching journalism classes at a university in the city of ho rat. it's an area that's been

relatively peaceful until yesterday. that's when taliban insurgents launched two deadly attacks and killed four people. she says the u.s. consulate sent an armored car to pick her up from the university. >> they actually came up to the university, found us and said let's go, let's go, let's go. and we grabbed everything we had and ran into the car and we sped lights and sirens to the consulate. >> take a look at some of the photos she took as she was watching and waiting at the u.s. consulate for the next six hours. on her facebook page she is writing that she went back to the hotel and armed guard was stationed outside of her room and that because of the threat of violence she's coming home leaving afghanistan early. she says she'll teach the rest of her journalism class to students in afghanistan by computer. time is 6:47. an arizona man's in jail this morning accused of shooting at an airplane and then leading officers on a high speed chase.

phoenix police say he shot at a parked plane at the airport sunday. the shots alerted nearby officers who say they saw reed drive off from the scene in a car. that led to a short high speed chase. investigators now say the 26- year-old was under the influence at the time and he's facing felony charges. time 6:47. sal's watching our commute. i understand you have the great said helping you watch the great golden gate bridge. one of our photographers looking at the golden gate bridge from the vista point you can see traffic moving along very nicely. we always take any chance to show off this beautiful bridge. and today there's news here. the eastern sidewalk, the one on the right as we look south from the vista point area will be closed for four months starting today for seismic work the sidewalk on the left is going to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians. the traffic on the left coming toward us looks good. those are two lanes heading north. the four southbound lanes it's pretty crowded but still not a

big delay heading down to the toll plaza. again, the traffic is moving well. but if you're a cyclist especially you may want to remember that -- there goes one, that grower foining to have to be on the eastern sidewalk for the next four months. let's go up and take a look at the westbound bay bridge. it's about a 15 minute wait at the toll plaza. no problems on the bridge. this morning's commute is okay in the east bay on 880 south and then also on the west bay. highway 101 peninsula looks good on the bay shore freeway 280 also doing well. 6:49. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. we have cloudy to mostly cloudy skies, again? yes, again. if anything may be a stronger system coming in for saturday. we've had some okay rain totals. great rain totals for the end of may in the north bay. going to be a mostly cloudy day as another unseasonably strong low drops in very cold core in the upper atmosphere. 50 to 55 cloudy rain to the north but mainly mostly cloudy and continue this theme 55 to

a surfer thought to be missing in san francisco was found safe and not in trouble as reported. the coast guard called just after 8:00 last night about a surfer near the cliff house possibly in distress. a chp helicopter was sent up to search. they found the surfer more than two miles away from the cliff house walking out toward the surf toward the great highway. he told rescuers he became separated from his board but was never in distress. the shape of healthy eating is changing. on thursday the obama administration's expected to replace the old food pyramid with a new plate design. the current pyramid is just too confusing. now there's this. the new plate is broken into four parts for grains, protein, fruits and vegetables. right next to the plate see on the right there, smaller circle for dairy. one woman's fight against the red light cameras could soon be good news for other ticketholders. a year ago me linda made a right turn at an intersection in napa county and then the red light camera flashed. soon she got pictures and affect for almost $500.
