intensifies for a missing student in the east bay. there is growing concern for michelle le, last seen friday. janine just smoke with police and joins us live with an update. >> reporter: tori, police say they are not giving up hope, they are working around the clock and they are making this case a priority. last night the family of 26- year-old michelle le gathered in front of the kaiser hospital in hayward and announced they're offering a $20,000 reward for her safe return. le has been missing since friday. she told classmates at the nursing school she was going to reno after class. police say she left during a break and never came back. her car was found parked a few blocks away from the hospital. investigators are looking to see if le's disappearance is at all connected to the homicide of another young woman, fong le, who went missing a year ago. she -- in fairfield and her body was found a couple weeks

later. >> they have the same last name, that they're both nursing students, that they both disappeared mysteriously. so we want to see if there's any other similarities, any leads that fairfield might be able to provide to us. >> police say based on interviews, there's no indication that le was depressed or in any trouble. her family and friends say this is very out of character for her, they describe herre as being very responsible. police say there has been -- she's not answering her cell phone, no cell phone activity and there's no activity on her credit cards either. right now what they're doing is gathering evidence, following up on leads. they want to go through her car, which was a honda, to see if they can get any hair fibers or clues that may lead them in the right direction. they would like anybody who has any more information to please give them a call. reporting live, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. umbrellas are out today.

we saw janine holding one. wet, rainy both makes its way across the bay area. the rainfall was mostly lighted but did get heavy this morning in some spots. more scattered rainfall is expected throughout the day. meteorologist rosemary is tracking what is coming up and she joins us live now in the weather center with a preview. >> yes, good afternoon. it's going to continue through tomorrow. we'll see widespread the showers on the peninsula and the east bay. if we get in just a bit closer, we'll continue to see the rain falling at least for the next couple hours. then tapering off just a little bit. over san francisco, seeing some of that rain. down into half moon bay, pacifica, redwood city and we've had some light rain taper off over areas on the north bay. the rest of us seeing light rain over areas oakland, san leandro, hayward this. will continue to push east some of danville seeing scattered showers there. pleasanton, and north just a bit, the north bay has seen

from .10 to .30" this morning. but for the most part, at this time we are seeing a little bit of a break over the north bay, and that is going to continue for the afternoon. but areas along the peninsula and the rest of the bay area seeing from .10 of rain with more to come. we'll see how long the rain is going to last, coming up in just a few moments. >> thank you. a news conference is underway in san francisco right now by lawyers to claim that an innocent 17-year-old was convicted of murder. scott was convicted of murdering pamela vitali in 2006. last week, his lawyers filed a habeas corpus petition implicating the husband as the perpetrator. they say whoever committed the crime used a key in the dore, straightened up the house and may have taken a shower and the alibi was never confirmed. rita williams is at the news

conference now and will have a full report on ktvu channel 2 news at 5. one young man is dead after a shooting in an east bay housing project. deputies responded to reports of shots fired in a housing project around 10:15 last night. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us live to explain why the lack of neighborhood cooperation left the sheriff's office searching for a motive. >> reporter: we can show you these trees are marked by bullet holes, where authorities tried to determine how large each hole was. right down there in investigators have identified where a second shooter aimed at last night's victim. still, this afternoon no arrests. as this is towed away investigators are findingest pointing to several shooters, aiming for the van driver. the spokesman indicated the difficulties in making arrests. >> unfortunately, right now we have no leads, no witnesses, no

motive and no suspects. >> the sheriff's deputies do have evidence pointing to the fact the driver, 22-year-old james newman, jr. was coming up the road when shots rang out. neighbors took cover. >> we got a two-month-old baby, first thing hit the ground, put the baby inside of the bathtub and get out of the way. mom dived on top of the baby in the bathtub. she's only 17. >> investigators say the man coasted up on to the curb in front of this apartment complex. the evidence of a gun battle with bullet holes on both sides of the tree remain. sheriff's deputies arrived to find the 22-year-old newman barely alive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. cpr couldn't save him. residents almost ignited the neighborhood. >> this whole place just -- it almost turned to riot. people were getting ready to turn on one another. very sensitive situation. >> family and friends came by with flowers today. another told us the 22-year-old

was a good man. james newman, jr. lived in the area and was born and raised in rodeo. so far, still no witnesses. investigators found no drugs or guns in the van. this is the first homicide of the year in rodeo. we're live in rodeo, jade hawaiian, ktvu channel news. the alameda fire department is considering reinstating its water rescue program after police and firefighters watched helplily yesterday as a man drowned. the 57-year-old suicidal man waded in the water nearly an hour at crown beach. due to budget cuts in 2009, the city's water rescue program was eliminated. so now the alameda police and fire departments are not certified in land-based water rescues. the fire chief is now ordering a rewrite of the water rescue policy, and firefighters are expected to immediately begin training. a young woman is dead after an accident in marin county. it happened just after 1 a.m.

on northbound 101 in novato. officers say 20-year-old kimberly augusto hit a guardrail, her car came to rest in one of lanes. that is when it was hit by a van traveling about 65 miles per hour. she was killed by the impact. four passengers in the van were treated and released at the scene. firefighters say the original crash may have broken the lights on her car, making it hard for other drivers to see it. we're finding out more about a pedestrian killed in campbell last night. it happened just after 11 p.m. on the busy pressly. the victim is a 31-year-old man from san jose who was drinking of he was hit by a 19-year-old san jose man who was unable to avoid the victim. the driver stopped immediately and was not under the influence. the accident shut down all southbound lanes on expressway

for almost two hours. >> a fire started on holster avenue in the bayview death. investigators still looking for the cause but say the fire started in the garage. the fire created a big challenge for the more than 50 firefighters who raced to the scene. >> very difficult fire to fight. you can see had the overhead wires, ground ladders quickly, and also the homes are quite close to each other, so the flames jumped to the adjoining building. >> firefighters kept busy, even after the fire was out they had to move everything out of the garage do you to the threat of the flames reus fighting. two people went to the hospital. the extents of their injuries has not been reported. san jose firefighters are gaining control of a smoky fire in a mobile home park. four adults and six children live there. they all got out safely before firefighters arrived. it happened on sunbeam circle and could be seen by commuters on highway 101 near story road.

this morning the coast guard searched the waters near ocean beach by boat and helicopter for a vessel believed to be in distress. received a report from a good samaritan after 7 a.m., saying a small gray boat may have been taking on water. crews found the boat matching the description but it was not in distress. the coast guard con duct a sweep of the area for about an hour, just to make sure there was not another boater having trouble. four people are dead and many more injured after a tour bus crashed morning in virginia. it ran offer under state 95, just before dawn, and flipped on its roof. state police say 57 people were onboard. the cause is still under

investigation. according to federal transportation investigators, the bus company has been involved in four crashes, including one fatal n last two years. former bart police officer mess mehserle is getting ready to leave jail. he will be set in a few weeks after serving 11 months of a two-year sentence. last summer he was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the killing every oscar grant at the fruitvale bart station. time-will allow a waiting trial was counted in the sentence. his attorney says mehserle will get into sales or business when he leaves jail. prosecutors in santa clara county could soon dismiss several dozen dui cases because of a faulty breathalyzer. we told you about the problems with the al co breathalyzer this month. now a review of more than 800 ducks i cases in santa clara

county shows 42 may have to be dropped. that's because those cases lack other evidence usually used to get convictions. supporters of a native american group held a protest this morning against a planned development at vallejo's glen cove. they gathered outside the bay trailhead quarters in oakland. that's the organization that gave the greater vallejo recreation district $200,000 for the project. the protestors and the nativive american group claim that plans for a waterfront park would desecrate a sacred burial site. >> as long as that's the plan, we're saying they need to show it's a just stable organization and withdraw their money. >> the native american group wants the trail to immediately pull their funding. demonstrators are threatening further action if that doesn't happen, including a campaign naming them as a violate over

of native american rights. the golden gate bridge could get more crowded today, not because of the cars and trucks. ali rasmus explains what buys consists and pedestrians who cross the bridge every day are so concerned about. >> reporter: on a busy day as many as 6,000 bicyclists cross the golden gate bridge. 10,000 walk across. usually pedestrians and cyclists use opposite sidewalks. but those on the west and pedestrians on east but starting today they'll have to share the same space. >> as long as people aren't sort of wandering aimlessly. >> many bicyclists say that's the problem, a lot of tourists walk the bridge, especially during the summer months. >> sometimes tourists wander around without looking. >> the change is because of seismic retrofit work going on on the bridge. crews have to shut county west sidewalk for the next four months. >> it will be a problem.

>> the group continues to voice their concerns to the golden gate transportation district. >> maybe there will be something else during the summer when they realize it's a problem on saturdays and sunday 92 officials sunday. >> officials are considering other options, including the possibility of painting lanes in the sidewalk to keep pedestrians and cyclists separate. >> they should separate the people, like the pedestrians on the right side or the bicycles on the right side, whatever. >> golden gate district spokeswoman says they've also proposed a speed limit for bikes. 10 to 15 miles an hour. but that idea is still in the discussion stages. a speed limit would be tough to enforce so for now, she's just going to change her riding schedule. >> so it will be a problem on the ride earlier in the morning or just not ride -- [not understandable] >> ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the privilege of driving solo in the carpool line is about to evolve.

the yellow sticker program for hybrid cars will expire at the end of june, so people with hybrids can no longer drive solo in the carpool lane. in stowed a new program with green stickers begins in january for people with plug-in hybrids. officials hope the stickers will inspire interests in the new vehicles. good afternoon. keep the umbrella handy. plan extra time on the roadways. scattered showers in the forecast today and through most of tomorrow. giving you a look outside, all that gray, cool, way below what we typically get this type of year. scattered showers very widespread over the peninsula and parts of east bay. daly city, pacifica, burlingame seeing light rain at this time. a little break over san jose, more to come later today. san leandro, hayward and oakland reporting moderate rain at times, and if we ship north just a bit areas right around napa reporting light rain.

but santa rosa reporting partly sunny skies and dry counts at the moment. when we get the partly sunny skies, we know what that means. the possibility of thunderstorms even in the afternoon especially for the north bay. 53 degrees santa rosa now. mid-50s in napa. upper 50s oakland, 61 in livermore and 59 expected as you head outside your door at this hour in san jose. satellite and radar, we've got this system still spinning off the northwest coast. it's going to sit here for the next 24 hours or so. it will eventually migrate east that. will keep the possibility of the scattered showers going. and when it does move over california it will bring the coldest, most unstable air which means tomorrow our better bet for thunderstorms between now and then scattered showers in the forecast, let's run you through your future casted. by 3:00 or so we may get a bit of a break it. will be short-lived, though. by 5 or 6:00 we've got just a true sprinkles over the coastline. by tonight and tomorrow morning, our commute tomorrow morning could be soggy once again and wednesday looks like

it could be fairly wet before wednesday evening it pushes off to the east, snow levels right about 6,000 feet could dip more by tomorrow. rain so far, anywhere from 1 to 3/10 over the north bay. lovers most of the bay area. winds could be breezy today, 25 miles per hour expected in throughout the afternoon. and our temperatures way, way below normal for this time of year. anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees. so it's going to feel like early spring, maybe even winter in some cases. bring along that jacket and again, have the umbrella handy. 67 expected this afternoon in napa. widespread, low 60s vallejo, berkeley. 65 for hayward and not even getting to 60 degrees this afternoon for pacifica. 58 degrees, breezy and cloudy. 67 mountainview for the afternoon. 68 in san jose. 59 degrees expected on the coast along half moon bay. extended forecast here, showers today, maybe a thunderstorm especially for the north bay. temperatures will run cool.

that is hoping to take care or at least partially take care of its debt problem. right now the dow is up 82. nasdaq up 24. s&p is up 8. oil is also 2%. home prices have fallen to their lowest inify years. the newest case schiller index says prices fell an average of 8/10 of a point in march. prices were up slightly in washington, d.c. and seattle. but down in the 18 other large cities surveyed. foreclosures continue to drive down prices in most areas. meanwhile, a new report out finds that foreclosure victims are not all irresponsible deadbeats. the study was performed by the national credit bureau transunion. it shows many homeowners who defaulted on their mortgages during the economic downturn subsequently proved to be responsible consumers and good credit risks. it blames many of foreclosures on a recession.
