coordinate the search for the little girl. news chopper 2 had a view of the area, but this search has gone statewide. a mother said she left the keys of the car in her ignition along with her daughter on the side to go to the food bank. when she came back a few minutes later, the car and baby were gone. here is a picture of mariana coron o. she was wearing white flowered pajamas. she was in a 1991 white infinity q95 sedan with tinted windows. california license plate 5xjw88. the california highway patrol, the highway department are all joining in on the search. they believe this was a crime of opportunity. and whoever took the car did not know the mother or the family but just saw a car with

one. the rain was headed our way during the day. scattered rainfall brought umbrellas out in oakland and as odd as this may sound, more rain is on the way on the first day of june. a month typically associated with hot weather. today's rainy weather is not what anybody expected or wanted after the memorial day week end. w e ekend. although many people did not expect it, it is unwanted for those trying to make money from the summer weather. >> reporter: the memorial day weekend is an important one, especially for business that consider tourism as their main source of money. right now business need a break from the weather. the unofficial start of summer is off to a cold start. and you can see the impact of this extended winter weather at

deleski now in jail without parol was wrongly convicted. a jury found deleski guilty of killing patowy in a mobile home next to a lot where she was building a home with her husband. police, prosecutors and even deleski's trial attorneys ignored evidence. >> that indicated that he was innocent antethat another individual, daniel horowitz was likely the perpetrator in this case. >> and this happens. this is how the legal system works. you file these petitions, i don't but attorneys do. trying to blame someone other than their client to get a guilty person free. >> reporter: the new attorney say part of the evidence not reviewed before was a police

interview patali's sister alleging prior spousal abuse by horowitz. the petition is considered a long shot. another appeal was shot down a year ago but now these attorneys allege that the first appeal was faulty. >> people in authority have died. ignored, and covered up the truth. >> it's the lies of scott peleski and his mother as far as i can tell. >> reporter: i'll have more on those allegations and daniel harwitz responds at 6:00. rita williams, ktvu. former b.a.r.t. police officer mehserle is getting ready to leave jail next week. having served 11 months of a two year sentence. last year a jury found mehserle. mehserle's attorney says his

client will go into sales or business following his release. a man drowning just offshore from alameda while firefighters stood by watching from the shore. ktvu's rob roth is here now and tells us why they didn't go into the water and try to save him. >> reporter: they didn't go in to try to save the man because of this policy that forbids water rescues. but that policy is about to change. perry smith says he still can't believe what he saw happen here at the beach yesterday afternoon. >> i thought it was appalling that the officials were just going to let this happen. >> reporter: smith says he was playing volleyball when a fully clothed man walked into the water apparently to commit suicide. police arrived and nine firefighters. this is a photo of some firefighters on the beach. none of the officers or firefighters tried to rescue this man who was about 50 feet out in about 5 feet of water.

the coast guard said the water was too shallow to try to get a boat there. a bistandard finally got to him but it was too late. >> they all sad at the beach and watched it happen. >> reporter: michael derosi is beginning his second week on the job. he said three years ago the department discontinued their water rescue training because of cuts. rescue swimmers shall not enter the water until further notice. they plan to have the water rescue up and running. >> i have already asked that policy to be rewritten. to take steps necessary on

shallow water safety. >> reporter: there will be no disciplinary -- on the officers, they were following orders. orders that have now been changed. political insiders say the issue may not get resolved until after the august deadline set by the treasury department. >> i think nothing is going to get finalized in the near term because republicans and democrats both have to wait until the absolute last minute before finding some common ground. the vote was 318 to 97. with 83 republicans joining democrats. the city faces a $306 million deficit. but the picture may not be quite as bleak as some had feared. according to the san francisco

an early morning accident in marin county today claimed the life of a young woman. investigators say 20-year-old gusto crashed her car into a guardrail near 101 in petaluma. a van then crashed into the car

killing agusto. investigators say it does not appear that alcohol was a factor. still no sign tonight of a missing nursing student from the east bay. there's now a $20,000 reward in the case. patti lee is in hayward tonight and tell us authorities are now trying to see if the case may be connected to the disappearance of another nursing student last year. >> reporter: the case of michelle le is similar to another nursing student that went missing last year. >> both of the women are nursing student, they have the same last name. they were both even driving white hondas. >> reporter: michelle le went missing last friday. she left during a break in class and never returned. police say there is no hard evidence of foul play. >> it's really hard to not

assume the worse but we're trying. >> reporter: michelle le's family is offering $20,000 for information leading to her return. >> she is very responsible. and much more responsible than me. >> that's patti lee reporting. a fire that injured two people in san francisco is being considered accidental. fire broke out just after 2:00 a.m. at a home near holister avenue. investigators say the fire started on the first floor inside a cluttered garage. the exact cause has not yet been determined but it is not considered suspicious. the fire was contained to that home. but it was a challenge for firefighters to keep it from spreading. >> it was a very difficult fire to fight. . the homes are also quite close to each other. so the flames may jump to the adjoining building. >> the two people are being

treated for smoke inhalation. their current condition is not known. a fire this morning left five people with no home and a firefighters with injuries. everyone inside got out safely. the injured firefighter was treated and released. the cause of this fire is under investigation. the american cross is helping the displaced family. here we are, it's almost june and more rain today, bill. just how you called it. what's going on here. >> this is the time you wish the forecast was wrong. because we talked about it yet. rosey talked about it sunday and yesterday. we're looking for some rain on saturday again. that's a ways out but it's just a really persistent pattern that we have. so right now what do you have? you have some showers up toward napa.

widely scattered up there in the napa valley. northern valley up near silv era do trail up there. silverado the country club. you can see showers falling there. just one lingering cell. some areas are not showing green but you are getting a little bit of drizzle. down in san jose, east of milpedas up near mount hamilton. mount hamilton is large enough to create its own weather. so that's stacking the clouds up there and creating it's own rain. the large pressure that is offshore right now that spawned the showers today, it's going to kick through. and when it kicks through it's going to trigger some more showers tomorrow. maybe even a thundershower. mainly north of napa. santa rosa, petaluma out toward clear lake in that area and out again in the valley. remember last week those tornadoes. i'm not suggesting tornadoes

dozens of dui cases in santa clara county may get thrown out because of defective breathalyzers. the breathalyzer's gave inaccurate readings because of condensation accumulation. a new audit find much of that money is being wasted on programs that just don't work. >> they're not that effective. we have a huge unemployment rate still hovering around 9%. it's not about the job training it's about having jobs available. >> reporter: there are now 47 different federal job training programs at a total cost of $18 billion. but federal auditors found many

news chopper two is live over the scene of a frantic search for a missing 1-year-old little girl. within the past 30 minutes since we last brought you the latest of the breaking news, we talked to a close realtive of the missing girl. the mother left this little girl with the keys in the ignition. when she got back minutes later the car and the baby were gown gone. >> reporter: and we're out here

and across from me is the frantic family of the little girl. here she is, she is one -month-old. just a baby girl, she was wearing a white flower pajama. her mother came here, to the food bank. she left her key in the ignition of her car. when she came out the car was gone. we were able to talk to some family members and here's what the sister of the mother had to say. >> reporter: we just want the -- >> we just want the baby. my sister's wallet was inside. we just want the baby. we don't care about anything else. >> reporter: the baby was in a white 1991 infinity q95 sedan with tinted windows. california license 5xjw448. police have launched a full scale search for the car and the little baby.

they have put out an amber alert so this has gone statewide. they are receiving a lot of unconfirmed reports of the car being seen from morgan hill to san jose and perhaps further north. but so far they have nothing solid. there is quite a concern about this because they do not believe that this was a intentional crime. it was a crime of opportunity. someone saw the car there with the key, took off, probably did not know that the baby was in the backseat. again the concern is that this baby is 1 -month-old. and whoever took the car abandons the car. that child will be by itself and that could be very dangerous. so again, they are asking anyone who sees this child, sees the car, a white 1991 infinity four door sedan to please give them a call. we'll have continuing updates on this story as it continues throughout the evening. live in morgan hill, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. lloyd as you're covering

bill martin is tracking the rain. first to sal castaneda who says this rain caught one couple completely by surprise. >> reporter: the wet weather has certainly been the topic of conversation. people say they are ready for dry weather on this last day of may. today's weather with well below average temperatures felt more like march in the last day of may. >> it's supposed to be summertime. it was like me memorial day was yesterday. it's freezing. >> reporter: on market street, people rushed to buy umbrellas. >> i was hoping summer would start, but i guess not. >> reporter: the general consensus, rain has to go. the rain will stick around this week and it may be even wetter this weekend. >> lousy. >> reporter: that's one word we heard for it. for this tourist couple visiting from london, who told us they didn't have a plan for the wet weather since most of the tourist books say the end

we've been covering the story since we learned that an amber alert went out for a 1 -month-old girl named mariana corona. here she is in the backseat of her mother's car. mom drove that car to morgan hill. from police we've learned the mom got out of the car, left the keys in the ignition, baby girl in the backseat and went into the church for a number of minutes. when the mom came out the car and this baby were gone. that happened just before 2:00. now about 3.5 hours later we've been able to confirm the little girl has been found. we don't know her condition, we don't know if the car has been found with her, we don't know if anyone is under arrest. but we have confirmed that the baby girl has been found. we have a number of reporters on this. we're expected to get a report in just about 30 minutes. we will stay on top of this and bring you the news as soon as we get it on ktvu news. it's the first study to show cars and effects of

danville teenager allyson baylis will be remembered to a 15-year-old girl who is believed to have jumped off the golden gate bridge last week. the band says they have been touched by the outpouring of help. bay trail is an organization that is bringing the greater vallejo district. the project will desecrate an ancient secret burial site. >> we're saying the bay trail needs to do the right thing and show that it's a just at the state and withdraw their money. >> reporter: the protesters are also threatening further action

as bay trail pulled their funding. home prizing around the united states is at its lowest points since the housing bust started in 2006. it tracks home prices in 20 metro areas. it says that prices fell from february to march in every one of those cities washington, d.c eighth month in a row that prices dropped and the report says the average foreclosure purchase is like getting a 20% discount on what prices should be. new findings are calling into question previous research that many consider ground breaking in the search if for for the cure of chronic disease. the latest findings are particularly important for chronic fatigue suffering. those drugs are not totally

a section of the golden gate bridge is expected to get a little more crowded beginning today. allie rasmuss explains why bicyclists and pedestrians now have to learn how to share the bridge. >> reporter: on a normal day, 6,000 people walk across the bridge, 10,000 people walk across. usually bicyclists and pedestrians use separate sidewalks. but starting today they'll have to share the same space. >> there's a good amount of space as long as people aren't wandering aimlessly. >> sometimes tourists aren't really aware that there's going to be bicycles on the same path. so they'll sort of wander around without looking and it can be dangerous. the change is because of

seismic retrofit work going on the bay bridge. crews have to shut down the entire west side for the next month. mo devlin is with the bicyclists association. the group continues to voice their concern to the transportation district. >> maybe they will do something once they figure out this is a problem on saturday and sunday. >> reporter: they talked about better education, signs at the entrance of the sidewalk, even the possibility of paints lanes on this sidewalk to keep pedestrians from cyclists. devlin says a speed limit would be tough to enforce, so for now she's just going to change her riding schedule. >> it'll be a problem i'll have to ride earlier in the morning

good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. want to get straight to our breaking news. the search for a missing 1 -month-old baby, we've been keeping you updated on all a afternoon. the good news there, that search has just ended. mariana corona was found just about 30 minutes ago in salinas. police in morgan hill which is where she was kidnapped from held a news conference about 10 minutes ago. jana katsuyama is there. did police say whether the baby is okay? >> reporter: frank, we understand that they are still trying to get more details so we're waiting on that news conference for right now. but what we understand, we were right there with police about 45 minutes ago when they got the news. they say they don't know at this point. but they usually say they want to send the baby to the hospital just to make sure that she is okay before they you know make any assumptions. so it's hard to tell at that point. everything has
