6:01 am
well, good morning to you. welcome to the middle of the week. it's wednesday the first day of june. i'm dave clark. good morning. i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. it sure doesn't feel like june though. steven, what is up with the weather. what is up with the weather is a very strong low usually shows up in february and march and it's decided to come in today. mostly cloudy skies, off and on rain occasionally possibility of severe weather with thunderstorms and maybe some hail and the highs today 60s, mid-60s in areas that should be in the low 80s and there might be even more rain as we head towards the weekend. more on that soon. now here's sal. all right. northbound 101 traffic looks good approaching the 80 split in san francisco. also this morning looking at 880 oakland northbound. just up the road there is a closure. but we get word that they're just about to reopen. so we'll get a live report from claudine coming up.
6:02 am
6:01. let's go back to the desk. all right. we have been following that developing news this morning in oakland for the commute. a multi-vehicle crash shut down all lanes of interstate 880 just north of the 7th street offramp. and clean up crews have been working to get things back open to traffic. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong has been out there all morning to see if cars are now being allowed back through this area. claudine, you're smiling. hopefully that's good news. >> reporter: well, we're waiting for them. we have been told by the chp they're opening this all back up. so we're watching 880 right now to see when the first cars will make their way on to the freeway. we have watched a few cars get on down the road. here comes cal trans. let's pan back out. you can see cal trans coming through and the first vehicles now making their way down this freeway. that's a big deal because they didn't actually think they'd be able to get things back open until about 7:00 this morning. but they were able to clean up things a little more quickly.
6:03 am
actually it looks like that car is pulling off to the side. maybe they're doing a little more before they are able to get this back open. again, they did tell us if we can pan over you can see a car a little further down getting on to the freeway. way down at the 7th street onramp. some traffic moving. this all happened about six hours ago with a multivehicle accident. it's really just jammed things up. there were three cars involved. the suspect car which is going recklessly down the freeway according to chp that hit another car and careened off that car and hit a big rig, that big rig hit both sides of the freeway and fuel tanks ruptured. that caused a fuel spill down the freeway. they got a sweeper truck out here to try to clean it up but then the sweeper truck broke down. it caused a very long delay to getting the freeway back open. but they had fuel for a good stretch of highway out here. they just couldn't open it back up until they got it cleaned up. they had a second sweeper truck come out and open things back up to traffic or cleaned up the roadway i should say so they
6:04 am
could get this all open to traffic. again, if we come back out here live we are keeping an eye up the road. we're kind of surprised we haven't seen anyone come down the roadway just yet because chp did warn us that we had to get off the freeway. cal trans said they're taking off. and so we know they kind of gave the all clear to get things cleaned up and back on track. this is good news for the morning commute, but, again, we have yet to see the first cars make their way down this freeway. again, we expect that to happen any minute because you can see the roadway is completely clear. and you do have people getting on down that way. that's good news for the morning commute. about an hour earlier than they thought they may have to delay it to. so if you're coming through this area, things should be moving very soon. live here in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:04. we're following another major incredible overnight story. a 2-year-old girl back home this morning after a terrifying kidnapping ordeal in vallejo. ktvu's kraig debro telling us
