napa. that's what we are expecting today. sun, clouds, showers, really cool reading. possibility of thunderstorms as well. >> thank you, steve. you can access the weather at ktvu.com and click on the weather tab. this morning, vallejo police are investigating a frightening child kidnapping case. kraig debro spoke to a man who helped this frightened little girl who knocked on his door last night. >> reporter: good morning. the little girl was a carjacking victim and then she became a kidnapping victim. she came here to the hospitals, to that apartment over there. but not everyone here is willing to help. larry waddley did get involved. he looked out his peephole after he got a knock on the

door last night. two men carjack a car. they may not have known the girl was in the back seat. when they did, they ditched the car. waddley said the girl wanted to wait for help next door at an apartment because there was a little girl living there but the neighbor did not want to help the carjacking victim. >> what can you say? i mean, if -- you don't want to get robbed. >> reporter: she has her own little girl, too. >> could have been her little girl. >> reporter: police say the girl and her father were not physically hurt. police believe they targeted the victim because any were after his-inch chrome rims on the -- after his 26-inch chrome rims on the car. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. 7:03. well, a family in morgan hill

is reunited after a similar case involving a kidnapped child and a stolen car. now, late yesterday, police found this month-old baby from an abandoned car in is a lien -- in an abandoned car in salinas. the baby's mother told police she left the keys in the ignition while she went inside of a church. her baby was in the back seat. well, the horrified mother came back five minutes later to find the car and her baby gone. three hours later, a bomb who was -- a woman who was out hiking in salinas discovered this baby. >> i heard the baby crying. it caught my attention. i looked over. what struck me -- what struck me odd was the car was empty and the baby was in the car. >> authority says this is a real reminder for parents, never leave a baby alone in a

car. 7:04. this morning more trouble for the man accused of beating giants' fan bryan stow. kcal reports that giovanni ramirez is possibly linked to a shooting two months before the attack in las vegas. police said a man believed to be ramirez shot and injured a man reportedly in retaliation for the 2005 death of ramirez's daughter. nevada police are not commenting. ramirez is scheduled to take a lie-detecter test today in the bryan stow case. all lanes of 880 are open after a fuel spill. the crash happened just after midnight near the 7th street exit in oakland. the california highway patrol says one person was driving recklessly when they rear ended one car and crashed into a big rig. this caused both fuel tanks on the big rig to rupture, spilling fuel all over the

freeway. it took caltrans crews about six 0 hours to clean up the -- six hours to clean up the mess. police are still looking for the person who caused accident. another recall involving toyota. toyota recalling 106,000 first- generation prius hybrids. 52,000 of those cars were sold here in the united states. toyota says a knot in the steering system can come loose and cause some big problems. one minor accident is connected to this recall. all of the recalled cars are first-generation prius. they were made and first sold between 1997 and 2003. it is 7:06. we want to check in with sal. a lot to report, especially with the 880 situation. is that all cleared up? >> i think we dodged a bullet. it has been opened since about 6:15 this morning near 7th near

the big post office and traffic is flowing again. so we got lucky it didn't wear on. all of the lanes are open there. traffic will be moving along there pretty well if you are driving on the freeway, most of the freeways. i want to show you what we have here. this is highway 4. seeing some slow traffic on highway 4, coming up to the -- coming up to the willow pass grade. as you make your way over to beautiful concord, california. you know, i don't think i've ever gotten a tweet from there? steve, can you get your friends to tweet? let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. we get a lot of people commenting about the commute. westbound is backed up for about a 10-minute delay. san mateo and dumbarton bridge, you are wondering what's going on, there is a little bit of slow traffic approach egg the bridge. once on the -- approaching the bridge. once on the bridge, it looks

okay. 7:07. let's go to steve. >> all right, sal. thank you, sir. well, a few sunbreaks there, but not too much as we have a really unseasonably low moving in on this 1st of june. even though we have some sun, it will be a mostly cloudy day. temperatures far below average for this time of year. 46 to 54. sun showers, and we expect the severe weather to pick up. clouds, showers. let's face it. we're at the -- we're at june 1st. there will be numerous showers. there's a pretty good band moving onshore. 56 to 66. sun, cloud, showers. sacramento is talking about it and why not? there's our system beginning to move in. there was some really heavy rain near redding. i think about an inform, inch and a half. northern mountains up to tahoe

truckee, but that will be later. we're focusing on that system coming in. one little cell popping up over san pablo bay, near vallejo. it looks like american canyon out towards napa that's the first line forming. here comes the band stretching. along the mendocino coast, it's on its way. santa cruz mountains, two- thirds of an inch of rain. oakland -- oakland airport, crockett, san francisco, about .10. 40s and 50s. we get a little bit a slight south wind in advance. low. it's being bumped along by a low. all signs point to rain, not showers, but rain. the only bugaboo would be if it comes in offshore and comes in earlier. we'll see. everybody seems to be on board for that. today, we're looking for mostly

good morning. 7:14. that's about the closest we'll get there -- a wide variety. wait five minutes. we could have rain and then sun. temperatures will be very cool for june. >> wow. okay, steve. 7:14. the hurricane season, you heard tori, officially started today. let's go to alley sop son -- alison burns in washington, d.c., where federal officials are telling people to get ready for a worse-than-normal season. >> reporter: dave, i've just confirmed that the homeland security secretary and director of fema are gonna be giving briefth on how they are prepared -- briefings on how they are preparing for it. the national hurricane senter is expecting up to 18 named storms, six to ten could become hurricanes and three to six of the storms are expected to be hurricanes, with winds at 110

miles an hour and higher. this is video from hurricane katrina. this is gonna be a difficult season for forecasters because both the el nino and la nina effects are relatively quiet this year and they say that makes storm prediction a lot harder. the last time temperatures were neutral like this was in 2005 when hushes rita and katrina slammed into the -- hurricanes rita and katrina slammed into the coast. back to you. >> thank you, alison. president obama will meet with leaders at the white house to discuss what it will take for the gop to discuss laying the -- raising the nation's debt limit. that's after a vote yesterday to increase. new this morning, egypt's news agency says former

president hosni mubarak and his sons will go on trial on august 3rd. mubarak will be on trial for corruption and intentionally killing protesters during the 18-day uprising that forced him from power. he could face the death penalty if convicted. mubarak's two sons face charges of abusing power to make themselves wealthy. in japan, opposition parties submitted a no- confidence vote to the president. the president rejected that. he says his party has a part in the parliament. an international nuclear watchdog group is calling for more oversight of nuclear plants. the tsunami in march crippled

the feel plant -- fukushima plant. well, in spain, the deputy prime minister is really anger over accusations from germany that spanish cue bummers are the -- cucumbers are the cause of sickness in 400 people. 16 people have died. it's thought the produce from spain was the cause. however, further tests show maybe they are not. spanish officials are demanding that germany declare that spanish produce is safe to eat. 7:18. u.s. attorney general eric holder will testify at a hearing today on crack detain prison sentences. the purpose of the hearing is to determine if the new law, which shortens the sentence to just five years, should be

applied retroactively. doing that could bring early release to one in 18 federal prisoners. and for people caught raising laser beams at planes, the fines are stricter. anyone caught doing that from now on will be charged harsher. the faa will be imposing fines. 7:19. the pentagon has refiled charges against five men accused of planning the september 11th attacks. the refiling means company company ka lead sheik muhammed and the others can be prosecuted at the guantanamo bay naval base. this comes after the obama administration dropped the plans to prosecute those

suspects in new york. joe ran van der sloot is looking for another lawyer in peru. he's getting ready to go on trial for the murder of stephany flores. his lawyer withdrew yesterday. van der sloot confessed to the killing saying it was a crime of passion which calls for a shorter prison sentence. van der sloot is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of natalee holloway in aruba, a case for which he's never been charged. the mayor of alameda says there will be changes after a man drowned while firefighters and police stood on the beach. alameda residents packed a public meeting last night and told the mayor and interim police chief what they thought of the memorial day incident. some said the crews who stood by should be the subject of a criminal investigation. but city leaders say the emergency workers had not been trained to deal with the situation and that could have put them in danger.

7:23. we're just finding out that the bus company involved in yesterday's fatal crash in virginia is now banned from all interstate travel. federal investigators say north carolina-based sky express violated multiple safety regulations. they say driver fatigue was a factor in a tour bus crash that killed four people and left 50 others injured. the bus was heading from north carolina to new york, when it hit an embankment and overturned in virginia. tonight, the west contra costa county school board will take a second look at closing an elementary school. in 2009, parents protested the plan to close shannon elementary school in pinole. the board said saving the school -- close the board would save about $320,000 a year. but since then the board discovered it could cost about $1.2 million to set up portals at other schools to accommodate

the other students. the board will look at other ways to reduce costs tonight. one baseball fan will do about anything to catch a foul ball. take a look. this is last saturday's game in los angeles. you can see the man holding up his daughter to catch the ball. he dropped his daughter to catch the ball. he missed the ball. he quickly picked up his little girl. luckily, she was not hurt. let's check in with sal. sal, you ever caught a foul ball? >> i haven't. but i don't think i would drop my daughter one. i don't know. different priorities. good morning. let's take a look at the commute now. traffic is moving along on 280, it's a little slow. all of a sudden, the slowdown appeared getting up to highway 17. you know, more and more people are going to work. we don't have any major

collisions on the way. we had a couple of sauled -- stalled vehicles there. it has not been a bad commute so far. let's take a look at at the westbound bay bridge. this commute has improved a little bit and was backed up a little bit more. there's a little bit of a backup at the toll plaza. that's about an eight-minute delay or so. if you are driving on the peninsula, traffic on southbound 101 looks good down to the airport in case you are trying to catch a flight. i'm looking at the accident list here. not a lot going on on the main freeway, so far. let's go to steve. mostly cloudy, some sun out there. not a lot. but there's some rain beginning to move onshore on the sonoma coast, marin coast. there's a line of showers starting to form from about napa, solano county, back to napa county and then into santa rosa. our system is moving onshore. for so early in the morning, things are really starting to light up. right over san pablo bay,

highway 37, there's napa in between cordelia, napa, back to calistoga, from bodega bay onto the marin coast. so 40s and 50s. our low is moving because it's getting bumped along by an even stronger system which is showing every sign of being here for rain on saturday. a couple of days to find of -- kind of massage that forecast. today, sun, cloud, showers, possible thundershowers with hails. 50s and 60s on the highs. these are far, far below average, especially for inland areas. a good 15 degrees below where they should be. partly cloudy, better on thursday. fry, increasing clouds -- friday, increase clouds. more coming up later. >> all right, steve. vandals shatter some windows at a san francisco photo shop. why some insist vandalism is a

7:306789 a problem with -- 7:30. a problem with a contractor is the latest problem in the san bruno pipeline story. jade hernandez says some of the victims feel like they've been abandoned. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. one family in particular used to call this home their home but now, after the san bruno explosion, they can't. it also looks like the vanderbilt construction company swept in and the future is in question. i spoke with the city and they assured -- they were assured from pg&e that they were a good contractor. >> pg&e assured us of that. we spoke them to hold their feet to the ground on this one. >> reporter: this the vanderbilt construction website. their phone numbers for the west sacramento and san diego offices are no longer in office -- in service. their castro valley office, tied to an answering service.

the owner did not answer his cell phone for us this morning. this was the problem. the family scheduled to move back in the home can't. you can see why. they were one of five members -- families who received an e- mail from the company saying they were closed until june 6th to reshuffle resources and to determine whether to close for good. we spoke to a pg&e spokeswoman this morning. she said pg&e is aware of the problem and will work with owners. this is disappointing for the mayor of san bruno because it has not been a month when groundbreaking of new construction began -- began. we heard from neighbors this morning who dealt with this construction company and fired them but they don't feel comfortable going on camera. they say many residents checked them out with the better business bureau and the licensing board before signing on with them.

this has been very frustrating for them and sad, sings they fall victimized once again -- feel victimized once again. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:32. this morning we're learning about several new leads in the case of the missing student from hayward. police now say they have identified some persons of interest. and they have served at least four search warrants. michelle le was last seen on friday at kaiser permanente. police say they are using all available resources to find her. >> we've not stopped working on this case. from the time we picked it up late friday until now, you know, my -- my initial investigators were here for in excess of about 30 hours. surveillance video shows le's car leaving kaiser's garage at 7:00 p.m. on friday night. but the camera angle makes it hard to see who is in the car. she was supposed to meet one of her friends but never showed up. there was more gunfire in

rodeo overnight. sheriff deputies say several people heard gunshots just after midnight. they all live near tulliby court, the scene of a homicide one night earlier. it's not clear if the -- if the overnight gunfire is tied to the deadly shooting. 7:-- 7:33. starting today, san francisco renews its stand as a sanctuary city and will not hand over illegal immigrants for petty crimes. the sheriff says he will now only turn in fallny -- felony suspects to officials. he says he will try to comply both with san francisco's sanctuary city law and the communities program. immigration officials say the sheriff avenue decision is unfortunate. well, vandalism at a san francisco recreation center is being investigated as a possible hate crime by the police. now, sometime between late friday night and saturday morning, somebody broke the

windows out at the harvey milk recreation center, then went on to cause a lot of damage inside the building. some of the people who work at and use the center think it was selected because it is named for a slain gay rights leader. liquor bottles were found nearby. the center's director is hoping vandals just had too much to drink and picked the building at random. >> it's hurting -- it's hurting the community. >> i think it's a hate crime. >> some of the organizers don't know yet how much it's gonna cost to repair the damage or even where that money will come from. this morning, san francisco mayor ed lee is scheduled to outline his first city budget. at 11:00 this morning at city hall he will present his budget for the fiscal year.

he says better-than-expected tax revenues may help prevent layoffs and help the $300 million deficit. in. in san jose, the coup there voted to impose a 10% pay cut to help balance the budget. the san jose workers are represented by four unions and include everyone from park rangers to city managers. firefighters and others have reached an agreement with the city. san jose is still in negotiations with the police department. san francisco's muni is shutting down two cable car lines today for a minute ens project. >> the powell mason and prowl line will be out of service until sunday. during the con struck you -- during the construction, bus will be in service. the california line has been down since january for ongoing repairs expected to last

through the summer. amtrack passengers on the capital corridor line are being asked to fight lunger one step -- hunger one stop at a time. they will be collecting nonperishable food starting today. the food drive will end june 15th. all of the good collected will go to food bank the along the capital corridor line. this is the largest food drive in california coordinated by a transit agency. time turning 7:37. and the space shuttle "endeavour" touched down in florida overnight and another chapter in the history of nasa ended. "endeavour" -- look at these pictures here. it ended a 16-day mission to the international space station. it landed at kennedy space center just after 11:30 last night our time. this was the 25th night landing in space shuttle history. the commander of mark kelly thanked everyone who worked on "endeavour" and spoke fondly about his spacecraft.

>> it's had to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy. >> now, "endeavour" replaced "challenger." it traveled 122 million miles in space over a 19-year history. "endeavour" will be decommissioned and sent to a museum in los angeles. just hours before that, "atlantis" was rolled out to the launch for its final space shuttle mission. it's scheduled to be launched july 8th. 7:38. attorneys for lance armstrong are demanding an on-air apology from the new show "60 minutes." one of arm strong's former teammates -- armstrong's former teammate appeared on the show and he claimed that armstrong tested positive for the substance at the 2001 tour of switzerland cycling race. he also said he witnessed armstrong injecting it and he saw it in his refrigerator. armstrong's attorney says the

had may have been a result of the wet roads. westbound 80 has improved in the last half-hour or 30 minutes. it was busier but now it's getting better. east bay, southbound 880, now there is a crash, just after the tennyson road exit, the traffic was going to be coming down and that's actually closer to whipple in union city. this may start to affect the traffic there. >> let's go to steve. a little bit of sun and a lot of clouds. some of it coming down moderate to heavy, especially in sonoma county and getting close to marin county. some of it moving onshore. we'll take take a look up to mendocino county. only 46 in ukiah. some rain getting closer. they are kind of on the northern edge of it. come in closer. you can see from geyserville, healdsburg, our observer said it's really picking u bodega

bay and also into santa rosa. very good thunderstorm activity. it's close to the radar sites. it may be a little enhanced, parallelling interstate 80 between napa, fairfield and back to vallejo and cordelia. that's the ban coming onshore. that will swing in in another hour or so. that's gonna continue too be there -- to be all day long as we see one band move in one after another. even if you have sun, it won't last because the very cold air is moving in. that will destabilize the atmosphere. that will had give us the possibility of showers -- with hail. the next system coming in looks stronger. the only question is where is it gonna set up? showers, sun, cool for june, very, very cool. 50s, 60s. in areas that should be significantly warmer than that. if anything the continuation of the pattern that we've been in better than thursday,

increasing clouds on friday, there could be some moderate to heavy rain in the north bay on saturday. i've seen some projections of 2 to 3 inches. we'll see if they backtrack on that. right now, that's the outlook. it is 7:41. warning for online shoppers what the state assembly has done that could make shopping on the web more expensive. why the lack of sunshine is such a concern for local vineyards.

carmakers are reporting may sales. no surprise, japanese cars sank. japanese auto sales fell by one- third in may, to their lowest level in more than 40 years. toyota was hardest hit, seeing a 56% drop. kia sales soared, 52%, while its affiliate saw a 50% increase. u.s. carmakers are expected to start reporting numbers in the next hour and and na lists expect chrysler to see the -- analysts expect chrysler to see the biggest gabe. if you have always wanted a tesla, now is the time maybe.

they will stop making the $100,000 sports car at the end of the year and they are changing their focus to more mainstream cars. they are already working on a sedan and suv. apple has reached an agreement with several record labels to start its own cloud- based music storage service. apple has been setting up a huge data center in north carolina to prepare for what it calls i cloud. i-cloud. 7:46. in new york, a mother and daughter trying to expand the girl cookie -- the girls cookie menu. one girl can't eat cookie about -- eat cookies with gluten. she and her mother are

collecting signatures. they are hoping to get 100,000 signatures. they said they couldn't make the cookies unless there was enough of a demand. u.s. winemakers are seeing a rebound. domestic wine sales jumped 7% in 2010. u.s. wine exports are up, 26%, to a record 1.14 billion. even restaurants claim they see a change. they say diners are starting to order full bottles of wine again instead of wine by the glass. well, we're still waiting for the summer weather to get here, and the delay has some people in the north bay pretty concerned about it. yesterday, we talked to a couple of winemakers who are closely watching temperatures. they say the vines need some sun. instead, we have another big

storm heading in and that means bad news for crops. >> this is pretty much ideal conditions for some of the diseases. so growers are really watching this. >> now, he says the main worry is fungus. it grows easily when it's damped. so now the growers will have to help those grapevines life. the sonoma county grapevine commission says growers are about a week and a half behind schedule and could use some warmer weather to help with the problem. people in washington, d.c. are experiencing shelter heat. temperatures are near 100 degrees. the average for this time of year in the capital is 80. the hot weather took some tourists by surprise. many took refuge under trees and ate popsicles to help cool down. >> oh, my god. it's way too hot. >> we're from pennsylvania. didn't anticipate it being this

this morning, san jose police will walk door to door to distribute fliers warning people a convicted sex offender. police say the man may pose a risk to the community. police are not saying why they are concerned about this particular sex offender at the time. police will be distributes these fliers in the pain area of west san jose. when we looked up the offender's site, his address is in that area. joy self naso will find out if he will -- joseph naso will find out if he will be released from jail. he has been acting as his own lawyer. he told the judge he should be released and have the case

tougher penalties for people caught pointing laser beams at planes. it's getting sticker out there. the faa is expected to announce today anyone who points a laser beam at a plane will be interfering with a flight view and that's a very serious federal offense. the faa will also assume the authority to file its own claims and impose fines. that will make it easier to punish violaters without the need for time-consuming criminal proceeding. tonight, pinole shannon elementary school could be saved from closeure. in 2009, parents protested the plan to close the school in order to save $325,000 a year. but now the west contra costa county school board has

the construction company. >> reporter: the san bruno explosion made this house unlivable. and now the family that planned to move back in, because of vanderbilt construction, won't be able to. this is their website. two of their numbers are disconnected. the castro valley number is tied to a cell phone. the owner did not answer his phone. what happens to this family now? the family who lives here is left stuck. now the families have to find a way to finish their projects with more money and a different contractor. we called san bruno's mayor. he's disappointed because it what's not been a month -- because it has not been a month since the groundbreaking construction.

feel victimized, once again. back to you. >> thank you, jade. 8:32. starting today, san francisco renews its stand as a sanctuary city and will not hand over illegal immigrants arrested for petty crimes. sheriff michael hennessey says he will now only turn in felony suspects to immigration authorities. hennessey say he's trying to find a way to -- says he's trying to find a way to abide by the sanctuary law and the community's program. this morning, san francisco mayor, ed lee, is scheduled to outline his first city budget. at 11:00 this morning at city hall, the mayor is scheduled to propose his budget for the fiscal year beginning july 1st. mayor lee says better-than- expected tax revenues may help withs mass layoffs. the city currently has a projected $306 million deficit.

and the san jose city council voted to impose a 10% pay cut on city workers in order to help them balance their budget. the workers are represented by four unions and include park rangers and city managers. the city is still in negotiations with the police department. the fire department and others have already agreed to -- agreed to this. there was more gunfire in rodeo. sheriffs say several people heard the shots just after midnight. all of them live near tullaby court, which was the scene of a shooting the night before. now, this was the first homicide of the year for that city. it's not clear if the overnight fire is connected to that deadly shooting. we do have new information this morning about michelle le, the missing nursing student from hayward. police now say they've identified some persons of interest. they have served at least four search warrants. so far, no one's been arrested. police still call this a

"endeavour" landed at kennedy space center just after 11:30 last night our time for the 25th night landing in shuttle program history. mark kelly thanked everyone who work on "endeavour" and spoke mondayly of the spacecraft. >> it's hard space -- spoke highly of the spacecraft. >> it's hard to see her land for the last time, but we will have her legacy.

apple has been setting up a huge data center in north carolina to prepare for what it calls i-cloud. that will work with itunes. they will be able to listen to the songs that are compatible with apple systems. the carmakers just released their may sales report this morning. there was no surprise. japanese car sales sank. japanese sales fell by one- third in may. the lowest level in more than 40 years. toyota hit the hardest. they say a 56% drop in sales. kia sales went up 22%, while its affiliate, hyundai, saw a 13% increase. so far, general motors is the only u.s. automaker to promote their sales. they say fewer deals offered to customers led to a sales drop of 1.2%. if you always wanted to own a tesla roadster, they are pretty sharp, this might be the best time to look for one.
