topping our knew -- what everyone is talking about, the unusually rainy weather for june 1st. ktvu's claudine wong we quince our storm coverage live -- begins our storm coverage live from oakland. >> reporter: good afternoon. it's been a drayzy warning with the -- crazy morning with the weather. right now we're getting a break with the rain. we have clouds behind us and a little bit of sunshine. how are people handling this crazy weather? before the storms pushed in, people actually enjoyed a bit of sun at crissy field. although everyone we talked to said they knew it would not last. >> what are you gonna do? it's nature. you go along with it. >> i feel sorry for the tourists. >> reporter: as the morning wore on, we saw the tourists --

>> oh, it's not. i thought it was a nice day. we have this weather in england. >> reporter: so you came all the way from england to get the same weather? >> yes. [ laughter ] >> there's no point in putting a damper on it. >> this is not supposed to be the weather because in the previous years, it wasn't like that. >> reporter: so they get a little rain delay, but they can at least see the bridge because locals tell you on a foggy day you might not even get that. >> i'm from ireland. >> we're used to the rain. >> it's wonderful. i'm just gonna tell my friend i've been through the golden gate. >> reporter: if you don't like the weather, stick around for a few days. >> it changes all of the time here. i'm used to it. >> reporter: take it in stride. would you rather have the warm? >> of course. yeah. though, before we can get more sunshine. we can turn to our meteorologist, mark tamayo, for some answers. >> hi, claudine. we're locked in this weather pattern. right now, you can see some of the rainfall totals over the last six hours. we picked up most of the rainfall. that was associated with the potent cold front that raced across the bay area earlier this morning. san francisco .09. mill valley at .16. here is the latest on live stormtracker2. you will notice the coverage has been declosing quite a bit -- decreasing quite a bit. possibly a thunderstorm toward evergreen. we'll move the maps and shift them to the coast, here's livermore and tracy. right around 580, we still have some heavier downpours pushing into the region. we'll hold onto the variable forecast. and then into the weekend we

have another storm to talk about. i will talk about that in a little bit. >> okay. thank you, mark. adding insult to injury, a contractor is tied to the latest controversy in the aftermath of the san bruno pipeline explosion. jade hernandez has more. jade? >> reporter: well, this home was destroyed by the san bruno explosion and now the family who lives inside cannot go back there until construction work is done. but now, vanner built construction suggested by -- vanderbilt construction suggested by pg&e is going on. >> we're sorry. you have reached a number that is disconnected or is no longer in service. if you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number and -- and try your call again. >> reporter: that's the message people get when if they call the san bruno office. we got an earful from neighbors who worked for the company and said they were left with unfinished and shoddy work.

this neighbor xed out out the name "vanderbilt." we were told pg&e recommended vanderbilt and they said they would take care of the residents. >> pg&e assured us from the very first day that they would make the city whole in the situation as well as the residents and we expect them to hold their feet to the ground on this one. >> they were part of the list but they were not on the list of preferred contractors. >> reporter: we know five out of 20 families who worked with vanderbilt received a company e- mail announcing the closure of the company until june 6th, at which time they would decide the fate of the company. >> our number one goal is to make them whole and they gem -- and get them back into their house. >> reporter: residents checked

vanderbilt with the better business bureau and the contracting licensing board. homeowners say they are too uneasy to go on camera. they are hoping for a quick resolution. reporting live in san bruno, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. a 2 1/2-year-old girl is home safe with her family again. as kraig debro reports, when the would-be thief dumped the car, the little girl went for help all by herself. >> reporter: larry waddley says he couldn't see who was at the door. but he could hear him. >> bam, bam. she was bamming on the door. >> reporter: he said the little girl did not seem scared or upset. at the time he decided to get involved, he had no idea the earl -- the girl was the victim of a kidnapping or carjacking. >> it was shocking. damn. glad i did it, you know?

>> reporter: earlier the little girl was with two men she didn't know in her dad's buick. police say men fled the scene after dumping the car and the girl next to these apartments. thieves took the car from a 24- year-old vallejo resident last night around 9:45. what they might not have known at the time was that the little girl was in the back seat. 40 minute the earlier at this intersection, the men driving that buick said men forced him to stop here. two men get out with guns and they take his little girl and vehicle. waddley was not the only one that offered to help, but there were those who didn't. a mother herself, she refused to help. >> she had her little girl on her shoulder and said, so much stuff happening, i don't know and she just shut the door. >> reporter: police believe

kidnappers, carjackers, took the car for the 26-inch chrome rims. in vallejo, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. meanwhile, a south bay family is now reunited after a similar case involving a kidnapped child and a stolen car. there was a happy reunion in morgan hill after the baby was found. that was hours after her mother left the child alone in a parked car in morgan hill while she went inside a church. her baby was in the back seat. the keys were in the ignition. the horrified mother returned five minutes later to find her car and her baby were gone. three hours later, a hiker in salinas made a discovery that ended the desperate church. >> i was in the car and i heard this baby cry. it caught my attention and what really struck me was the car was empty and baby was in the car. i thought that's odd. why would someone leave the baby alone in the car? >> the baby was not hurt.

the police are still looking for the carjacker. police say this is a reminder that parents should never leave a baby alone in a car. the southern california woman accused of kidnapping her own baby granddaughter in eastern contra costa county week before last has now been moved had -- has now been moved to the bay area. a contra costa county spokesperson says the 58-year- old woman was booked into jail late yesterday. she's scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 in mars -- martinez. hayward police say they are following several new leads in the case of a missing nursing student. police say they've identified some persons of interest in michelle le's disappearance and they have served at least four search warrants. le was last seen on friday at kaiser permanente hospital in hayward. police say they are using all available resources to find

there is a new development in a multi-vehicle pileup that blocked northbound interstate 880 in oakland early this morning. the chp says the driver -- the driver that caused the accident and left the scene has been arrested. officers say he hit two cars and a big rig about midnight, just north of the 7th street offramp. they say he then asked a woman to drive him to the hospital. four other people also suffered minor to moderate injuries. it took about six hours to cleanup spilled fuel from the big rig and other debris and all other northbound lanes were back open shortly after 6:00 in the morning. san jose police are giving people a heads up about a

potentially dangerous neighbor. they are going door to door in the payne avenue and the expressway areas of west san jose and handing out fliers about a high-risk sex offender. they say the man is not wanted for anything right now, but they say he may pose a risk to the community. >> this person spent some time in prison for some sexually violent crimes that he committed in the late 1970s. he's demonstrated a pattern of behavior since then that leaves not only the police department but in conjunction with state patrol to believe that he may reoffend. >> police say they are not trying to bring about fear but they cannot dictate where this man lives and they feel by informing the community, people can help keep themselves and their children out of harm's way. health officials in germany say the number of people affected by an e. coli outbreak is growing. at a news conference yesterday, they said more than 1500 people had been infected and 1700 feel have now died from

complications. they say they've not ficked out the -- figured out the source of the contamination which has shown up in smaller numbers in seven other countries. they don't know why it's causing so many cases of a syndrome that can cause seizures, comas and other ills ins. -- and other illnesses. it was not agreed to raise the country's debt limit. congress has until august to finish the debt ceiling, so they can pay the bills. san francisco mayor ed lee laid out his priorities for the upcoming budget this morning. in a speech broadcast live on the city's website, ed lee talked about closing a $306 million budget deficit for the fiscal year beginning in july. the city had -- has had better

than expected tax revenues. that could help avoid cuts. lee has been negotiating with police, firefighters and nurses to defer upcoming pay raises. he says that will save the city $23 million. in san jose, the city council voted to impose a 10% pay cut on 2800 city workers to help balance the budget there. the workers are represented by four unions and include everybody from park rangers to city planners. firefighters and other unions have already reached agreements accepting similar cuts. the city is still in negotiations with the police department. the space shuttle "endeavour" finished its space career with a ghostly-looking landing in florida overnight. the youngest shuttle in the fleet returned home after a 16- day mission to the international space station. we're still holding onto a winter-like weather pattern with off-and-on showers for today. get ready for the weekend forecast. we're talking about more significant rainfall. you can see the coverage out there. not a lot of green to show you but we do have some intense cells. right around the milpitas area, around 237, jacklin road and also at warm springs boulevard. you can see the live doppler sweep showing you some intense activity here. could be tracking a storm close to 880. i'm gonna move the maps up to the north and show you more activity in parts of the north bay. not a lot of coverage around st. helena. just to the north of concord and fairfield, once again, the wider perspective. the main action right now as far as the most intense activity, that's focused in the southern part of the bay area and just to the east of morgan hill. a look outside.

there we go. it's -- it has a little bit of everything out there, sunshine, clouds and passing showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm. and that's basically the weather story for today. tomorrow, partly cloudy skies, we can't rule out the chance of a shower but improving conditions for your thursday and then the weekend. this is the developing headline with more rain and it could be heavy at times. current numbers just updated. mainly in the 50s to the 60s. mountain view, 61. livermore, 51. here is the cluster of showers that moved across the bay area or the heavier rain that moved in this morning, we still have the area offshore. so we have to hold onto the possibility of showers or an isolated thunderstorm today. main developments up here. this will, the weekend storm. this moves in as early as friday afternoon, with the rainfall picking up on friday night. the chance of showers focused up in the north bay and south bay. 7:00 tonight, not allowed to show you. tomorrow morning weighing should be dry.
