found. the 26-year-old nursing student was last seen friday night heading to a parking garage at the nearby garage in hayward. investigators explain that mobile phones give signals to towers whenever they're powered on. today they received the pattern that her phone followed until mid-day saturday. >> so that is the best information we have to work on. it has taken a while to get the information from the providers. and we're -- working with the information and trying to put it together to give us a location to go. >> reporter: investigators say they have also processed lee's suv, looking for prints, blood, dna and fiber evidence. >> we hope to have information back on that evidence within about a two-week period. >> reporter: and meanwhile, investigators confirmed today they have questioned her family and friends as well as stopping and questioning a woman with whom le had a falling out. >> we didn't have anything to go on with respect to that. and we ended up having to

release that person. >> reporter: and last night, le's father arrived from vietnam. police say they updated him and the rest of the family on the progress. at that point they were still classifying it as a missing person case, not as an investigation. and correctional officers fire rubber bullets to break up a fight at the san quentin prison. they say a person was jumped in the reception center, where the inmates are processed when they first arrive at the prison. the inmate that was attacked was sent to the hospital. prison officials are learning more about the fight. and just three weeks away from the official start of super and it is still raining here in the bay area. let's look at the amount of rain we had in vallejo this morning. our photographer captured the pictures outside the home depot there. you can see that people had to run in and out of the store, or be like this guy just kind of take it easy in an effort to

stay dry. our photographer took these pictures in oakland's china town. people are running around, began to grab the umbrellas. he started to shoot the pictures when the downpour began, and this type of rain lasted at least five minutes. and in the sierra, here is what it looks like right now on the caltrans web camera in truckee on interstate 80. kind of hard to see. the national weather service issued an advisory for snow above 5000 feet, with accumulations of up to 6 inches at 6000 feet. and our chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking this storm and is about to show us severe weather in northern california. bill? >> yes, yesterday in the weather center, the severe weather is possible here. we have it from davis sent in to us, a funnel cloud, you can see it up over the area here, basically a tornado that has not touched down yet or has touched down and lifted up.

this morning. early afternoon for some businesses here in marin county and san francisco, and beyond the month of june is truly a big financial month. and many say they just can't afford to get washed away. welcome to the month of june on this day one pockets of scattered showers forming in pockets of the bay area. and some landscapers are scratching their head. this man works for donlin landscape, and says this morning the cement had problems with the progress on the projects. >> right now it is slow, very slow. different -- last year we were very busy. >> i think the party is going to happen -- >> reporter: they are talking about the union street festival, a san francisco tradition that is home to an estimated 100,000 people every summer. it is meant to happen this weekend, a weekend not expected to be very dry, especially saturday. >> i think it may make it wet a bit. but i think there are too many people out there ready to go,

rebuilding. but that is not the case. ktvu's ken pritchett has more. >> reporter: the owners of this home still wait, still wait to come home to a house fit to live in. it has been months since the san bruno explosion, and now it seems they will wait longer, the homeowners were sent an e- mail by the company that they may go out of business. >> it is tearing my heart on, because people have work done that needs to be done over. >> reporter: the neighbor says she hired vanderbilt construction but parted ways. >> we had a couple of misunderstandings. >> reporter: she says she is concerned about her neighbors who have paid money to the company and may not be able to afford to hire another contractor. the neighbors say vanderbilt was on a pg&e list of approved contractors. >> well actually there was no list of preferred contractors that pg&e put out. >> reporter: they say they did offer a list of contractors

that homeowners could use, which would direct bill pg&e for the work. but the utility says it was not recommending the contractors. pg&e says it has or will meet with those homeowners effective. >> and we're reaching out to them. and we're committed to making them whole at the end of this process. >> reporter: we tried to reach vanderbilt construction, but the calls were not returned. it is important to note there is another company doing construction, called vanderbilt family builders. that company has been in business for years and has no connection to this story. in san bruno, ken pritchett. and we learned that the california treasurer matt fong died today after a battle with skin cancer. he served as state treasurer

from 1994-1998. he was an attorney, a republican and the son of the assemblyman. he challenged barbara boxer for her senate seat in 199 #. and she issued a statement saying he was a strong competitor with a long career in public service. and raising the nation's debt ceiling. >> it would be extremely dangerous. and would have highly negative impact. >> today, they invited them to the white house, the meeting comes after the republicans defeated a move in the house to raise the debt ceiling. they called the meeting productive, but said if borrowing goes up, spending must come down. >> we'll raise the debt limit, the spending cuts should exceed the increase in the debt limit.

otherwise it will serve -- cost us jobs. >> the spending cuts are being debated over plans to change medicaid and medicare. they are looking at an august 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling. tomorrow, democrats have their turn at a white house meeting and vice president joe biden will resume his bipartisan talks on spending cuts. so imagine filing your tax return and finding out somebody else has already received your refund. the irs says taxpayer identity theft is a growing problem. that is when somebody uses your name and social security number to steal your refund. it happened 248,000 times last year. that is four times as often as in 2008. and on wall street, stockings took a beating today. weaker than expected reports on manufacturing jobs, combined with doubts about an economic

recovery, the dow lost almost 280 points. the nasdaq dropped 66 points. and google says that chinese hackers broke into several hundred of the g-mail accounts. google says the victims included government officials in the united states as well as political activists. google notified all the victims and secured their accounts. the investigators believe the hackers convinced people to give their pass words through something that is known as phi ssing. and looking at rain in san francisco, all three of the cable car lines are out of service. the powell mason and hyde lines are out of service, meaning shuttle buses will carry the passengers along the cable route. the street line has been down since january, and will be closed all summer for repairs. and transit agency wants to update the fleet of trains and is asking riders to give their input on the best mix of seat

sizes and covering. the seat lab is expected to be at the bart station from 2-6 tomorrow evening. and thieves take off with a car with a two-year-old in the back seat. when they ditched it she got out to get help, and why a woman turned her away. and police say this woman snatched her granddaughter from a home in the bay area and then took her by cab to southern california. up next, what happened in

. the southern california woman accused of kidnapping her granddaughter last month in eastern contra costa county appeared in court. authorities say she entered her son's home and took the four month-old girl by taxi back to her home in the city of el monte. she is charged with kidnapping and burglary and is scheduled to be back in court to enter a

plea on the ninth. and police looking for a suspect who stole a car with a one month-old baby in the back seat, happening yesterday. the baby was back with her family last night after she and her car turned back up in salinas. you saw the story yesterday on channel 2 action news at 5:00 and 6:00. the baby's mother says she left the girl alone in the back seat of her car while she went inside a church in morgan hill, and also left the keys in the car. the scared mother returned five moments later to find her car and baby gone. but three hours later, the desperate search ended when a hiker there discovered the car and baby. >> i heard the car and baby, the baby caught my attention, the car was empty, the baby was in the car. i thought that was odd, why would somebody do that? >> the baby was not hurt. police say this case is a reminder that parents should

never leave a baby alone in the car, especially if the keys are also in the ignition. and tonight, a toddler back home and safe with her family after being kidnapped during a carjacking in vallejo. after the suspects dumped the car, the two and a half-year- old girl went looking for the car all by herself. more on the story. >> reporter: larry watley couldn't see what was at the door, but certainly could hear a knock. >> she was banging on the door, we looked, she was strong i guess. >> reporter: he says the two and a half -year-old girl didn't seem scared or upset. at the time he got involved he didn't know the girl was the victim of a carjacking and kidnapping. >> it was shocking, you know? it was wow, i'm glad i did it, you know? >> reporter: moments later the girl was with two men she didn't know in her dad's buick. the men fled the scene after dumping the stolen car and the girl next to the camilla

springs apartment. the thieves took the car from a resident there last night. what they may not have known at the time was that the little girl was in the back seat. 40 minutes earlier at this intersection, the man driving the buick told police that three men in another car forced him to stop here, two men got out with guns. they take his car and his little girl. watley was not the only one to personally get involved to help the girl, but there were those who didn't. he says the next door neighbor, a young mother herself, refused to help. >> she had her little girl on her shoulder and said so much stuff is happening, i don't know, she just shut the door. >> reporter: the victim and her father were not hurt. the police didn't comment but believe the reason the carjackers were now also considered kidnappers, took the car. the vehicle's 26 written crome rims were taken as well. the suspects are on the loose in a 1980's buick.

in vallejo. and authorities evacuated part of the federal courthouse at 7th and mission streets in san francisco this morning after somebody found a suspicious package showing up in the mail room. it turned out to be a harmless electronic device that somebody left. the evacuation ended about four hours after it began. at that time, many of the workers just went home. and officials say all those missing after the deadly tornado have been accounted for. they have also updated the death toll, now it is at 134. the federal safety experts today urged people in joplin to take care to avoid breathing dust that could contain harmful materials that could lead to the same problems hitting the first responders after the world trade center attacks. other sources are among the agencies that started to work on the debris removal. and i live the oakland, for a while it was really pouring. i guess the question everybody

clarifications, a few moments ago we told you all three cable lines were down in san francisco. that is the case, but specifically for the california line it has been down since january but is set to open again and be running once again by the end of this month. that is the california line. and meanwhile, a ghostly looking landing in florida wraps up the career of the space shuttle endeavour. it ended with a trip to the international space station just after 2:30 eastern time, it was the 25th night landing in the shuttle program's history. commander kelly thanked everybody who worked on the endeavor and spoke fondly about the space craft. >> it is sad to see her land for the last time, but she really has a great legacy. >> endeavor is the youngest of the fleet, replacing challenger and traveled many miles in space. the retired ship will be the center of the space's display at the california science center in los angeles. and when endeavor's crew landed

they could see atlantis waiting on the landing pad. before then, a high school teacher will almost get into space on a nasa project called a flying telescope. and two students taking part in the national spelling bee this weekend. washington, d.c., 14-year-old kate anafrieva is a russian speaker from washington, d.c. she is from walnut creek and says the competition is fierce. >> a lot of people are here for the second, third time, with more experience, they have been studying for a long time. i mean there is still a chance for me, but i think they have a bigger chance. >> 10-year-old santeel, a fifth grader from san jose made it to the bee. unfortunately neither of those girls made it to tomorrow's semifinals, but still a great

. two jets were scrambled over the weekend because of a fight on an airliner, they say the incident started about 9:20 sunday evening, where the pilot reported two passengers were fighting. the plane turned around, came back the washington. the two passengers were released without being charged. and the federal government launched a new crackdown on a dangerous crime that threatens airlines, going after people who shine laser lights into the airline cockpits. >> it is very difficult, unbelievable, even when you think you're prepared for it, it is like a lightning flash close to you. you are really not prepared for it until it really happens. >> the delta airlines pilot chad smith says he was temporarily stunned by a laser beam while flying 142 passengers to oklahoma city. had he and others were targeted

with the strong lights. criminals are shining them into airplane cockpits and the faa says this is a serious fence that is on the increase new this is not taking a little laser pointer and playing with the cat with it. this is serious, people's lives and health are involved. >> the faa is raising the penalty for anybody caught pointing the laser beam at an airline to $11,000. by the way coming up at 5:45, robert honda will tell us more on the bay area response to the incident. and authorities in thailand arrested an american citizen on charges of insulting the king. a spokesperson in bangkok identified the person as gordon who was born in thailand, spent 30 years in colorado before returning for medical treatment. the investigators say he is accused of posting the material on line that allegedly harms

the royal family. he could spend 15 years in prison for the offense. and lance armstrong wants an apology from 60 minutes, he accuses them of bad journalism on the story that he used performance-enhancing drugs, he was alleged to have tested positive. the head of the switzerland doping laboratory says it is not true. cbs is reviewing the matter but for now is standing by the report. and one area city seeing a huge spike in the overnight break-ins. i'll show you what businesses are doing about it, and how police think some of the cases are linked. and it is a 747 with a giant hole and a telescope. coming up more on what is allowed on board. ñsxóxgñ ♪ [ ukulele strumming ]

police in petaluma say they are dealing with a spike in burglaries like they have never seen before. and it turns out most of the targeting are small businesses, ktvu's eric rasmussen has more on the story, and what store owners are doing about it. >> reporter: frank, this pet clinic has actually been hit twice since april. i can tell you it is not the only broken window they have had here. they since added windows and a sign here they no longer carry cash. but thieves are finding plenty of places to break in. a coffee shop, a flower shop, a vet's office. police say that burglary suspects have hit a variety of

businesses. and the list is getting longer. one office here was among 13 businesses broken into in one night when somebody broke into this old home which serves as an office building. >> there used to be a computer sitting here, and now it is gone. >> they're gone quick. >> reporter: the police there say the burglaries have been spread out across the city, but most were happening at night with similar signs of forced entry. >> and just taking small things, like lottery tickets, cigarettes, petty cash, things like that, bikes. >> reporter: now patrol officers are stepping up and asking people for help. police suspect transients could be responsible for some of the cases, but they have no prints to go on. >> it is not usually like this. >> reporter: andrew christianson considers himself lucky that one expensive bike was recovered soon after somebody stole it out of his front window. >> do you have any idea who could be responsible? >> no idea. >> reporter: and put in perspective, police told me they normally have about one or

two burglaries a week. so they think that some of the recent cases could be linked. live here in petaluma. and today, a man using a laptop to track the thieves. he was arrested and charged with possessing stolen property. police say he stole a laptop from an oakland department. well, the owner of the computer pushed forward the tracking software and took pictures even of the user. he posted them on line, they went viral, leading police to the accused thief. and word tonight the man accused of beating giant's fan brian stow is wanted for a shooting in nevada. ramirez is a suspect in a shooting in henderson, nevada that happened before the attack at dodgers stadium. the nevada police are not commenting tonight. ramirez was scheduled to take a test today regarding the case. the results of the test are not public. and so will he or wouldn't

he? there are conflicting reports tonight about whether senator jim demint is a candidate for the office. he is a favorite with the tea party movement. others say it would take an act of god to convince him to run. but a washington paper is reporting that demint is considering a white house bid. he told the paper, the hill, that conservative activists have pleaded with him to run, and he is considering it. and sarah palin does not say if she will run as she continues her bus tour. she and her family hit the big apple today. last night, the former alaska governor met with the reality tv star, trump. she says that she and trump discussed the economy. >> we talked about what government can do to allow us to grow again. basically what government can do is get out of the way, and let our job creators do what

they can do best, reinvest and hire more people. >> sarah palin wouldn't say where she was going next, but will visit an historic site. and given a once in a life time opportunity, she is one of just a few able to fly on the nasa 747. this is not an ordinary plane, sources say, and definitely is not an ordinary flight. >> reporter: and some dream about going to the super bowl. this science teacher dreamed about flying on this. and her dream is about to come true. this is not your typical science project. more than 30 high school juniors and seniors swam around the pool in home made cardboard boats. >> i don't know, that was hard work. we learned how to make a good boat. >> i think other people had a layer, and we had like 15. so i think that helped a lot. >> making science fun is the

. philip and nancy garrido are to be sentenced tomorrow for kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her as a sex slave. nancy garrido's plea bargain includes a sentence of 56 years to life, with the possibility of parole in 31 years, it is not clear if jaycee dugard will attend the sentence. there are motions to release grand jury testimony from last september. and in west san jose, a registered sex offender has moved into a neighborhood and officers went door-to-door there to distribute a photo of

61-year-old wayne allen page. police say he spent time in prison for sexually violent crimes in the '70s. and they say he has demonstrated a pattern of behavior indicating that he may do it again. >> we want them to be familiar with his face, where he lives and where he may frequent so that they may not find themselves victims of a crime. >> police also stress that nobody should bother page. they say today's action is really about spreading information. not spreading fear. and the monthly jobs report by a private payroll firm came in far lower than expected today. they say american employers added 38,000 new nonfarm jobs in may, far short of the 171,000 most economists predicted. the government issued their own jobs report friday. and how much do you like your job? 87 and a half% of people who responded to a survey in april

say they are satisfied with their jobs, down from 90% in 2008. the largest dissatisfaction was found among younger workers. and research suggests that children with adhd have a high risk of substance abuse, more than children without the disorder. the children have a one and a half times greater chance of abusing alcohol or drugs. the authors of the study advised that anybody with adhd should be counseled on the higher risk. the findings appear in the journal on the american academy of child psychology. as you heard, the faa wants to make sure the public understands shooting a laser at aircraft is a dangerous crime. the bay area has faced the problem for years. what pilots and police have to say coming up. and this just in to the weather center, a tornado warning up towards chico again. we'll have more on the system we're tracking.

. as we reported earlier, the faa announced today it will now levy expensive fines on people caught shooting lasers at aircraft pilots, coming after at least 100 laser incidents were reported earlier this year. it is an issue we covered as soon as it became a growing problem here in the bay area. and ktvu's robert hopped honda has more in the south bay area. >> reporter: well, police say

the latest laser attack took place just last night at a plane traveling from san francisco to san jose. it shows that the laser problem affects everybody, and the pilots are still trying to solve it. wolf geiger owns and operates this trade school here in san jose. he is glad the faa is taking steps to crack down on the attacks, but he routinely sees the attacks happen. >> you don't know what is going on. so it is like a strobe light, or the lightning is probably the closest example. >> reporter: this is an actual strike hitting the cockpit of news chopper two. and the blinding light they cope with. san jose had about 88 incidents from january 2010 until now. oakland had 69 in that time. san francisco, 52. san francisco police formed a regional task force, the laser

strike working group, using the technology to trace the attacks. the group has made arrests but acknowledge strikes keep coming. >> we acknowledged an increase of laser strikes to all types of aircraft, be it commercial or military, medical transports. >> reporter: the san jose police applauded the efforts to impose the stiff penalties on laser users. even the pilots were surprised by the fines. >> wow, 11,000? i guess it is adding a respect for flying, you know saying this is not really a joke. like this is people's lives that you are dealing with. >> reporter: talking to the faa, the group says that while new technology helps them trace the beam to a point of origin, they also say that lasers are more powerful and can be shot from further away. live in san jose, robert honda, ktvu channel 2 action news. and airlines making billions charging customers for a variety of services, which include bag fees and charging for movies or food.

paddies. and i think, i don't have confirmation on this. when they issued it, they issued it based on -- watch the formation as it goes over yuba city. and it looks like a comma, that is the picture of a tornado on the doppler radar. you can issue a tornado warning based on that comma shape. so right now i have no reports of tornado sightings. but we have the comma on radar. that will get you the warning. that is a classic signature of a tornado warning here. with that in mind, let's not worry about it being a giant tornado. those types of cloud tops, those heights won't get you a tornado much bigger than an f zero or ef one, last week they were 17,000 feet, so much higher. so that is the story, we'll keep you posted on it. for us here, we have the tomorrow forecast which calls for a chance of showers in some locations, we're tracking the
