>> bah! . complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. >> an angry crowd tonight at a peninsula church amid allegations against the parish pastor. good evening i'm julie haener. and i'm frank somerville. the incident allegedly involved a 13-year-old boy. now the pastor from menlo is on leave and the community is now stun. lloyd lacuesta is live in menlo park where the bishop himself addressed concerns tonight. lloyd in. >> reporter: it was a painful and emotionally charged night here at st. raymond church in

menlo park. they state church pastor has been removed because of an incident involving a 17-year- old boy. the bishop himself came to talk to the parish. [ inaudible ] >> they say they just learned last thursday that the priest had followed a 17-year-old boy, who was a member of the church, into the dressing room of a department store on april 19th. the boy's father called the police, who determined there was no criminal activity. the archdiocese says priests are not allowed to be with a child alone. the archdiocese also says over the last 11 years, there have been no charges or allegations against father williams. he came the pastor of st. raymond last year. the bishop says the priest admitted to them he has a sexual addiction. the archdiocese says it has also learned that when father william was or doned in stockton, he had undergone two years of therapy. >> the therapy was because he

was battling with sexual addiction. >> reporter: parishioners we talked to are upset. >> the due diligence was nothing that it had to be. we have little kids here. you can't have someone struggling with their sexual identity? i mean what does that mean? >> i am sorry for what happened. i feel really sad. but i think you know that god helps him. you know, i don't hate him. he was our pastor. this is my church. >> reporter: the archdiocese has appointed an independent review board to investigate father williams. the bishop himself will be celebrating mass here until a replacement priest is named. live, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu, channel 2 news. right now the san francisco bomb squad is live at ocean beach where they detonated an ordinance. a man found world war ii ammunitions in a home he was

renting. news chopper 2 was overhead during ktvu channel news at 6 as officers blocked off the highway and they cleared a section of the great highway. we are awaiting new video of that detonation at ocean beach and bring it to you as soon as we get it. the bomb squad's first call was to the federal court house. parts of the building were evacuated after a mailroom x- ray machine alerted officers to a suspicious package at 11:30. the bomb squad investigated for 11 hours before allowing people back inside. police say a harmless electronic device was inside the package which was being delivered to someone in the building. >> it doesn't happen very often, especially these days with all of the budget deficits. but tonight a bay area school that was set to close was given a last-minute reprieve. shannon elementary is located and amber lee is live in richmond with why that school was saved and why it may be

just a temporary victory. amber? >> reporter: frank, we want to show you these signs made by a fifth grader from shannon elementary. it shows how passionate this community is about keeping the school open. and tonight their efforts paid off. the vote is unanimous. you passed and congratulations. good work. >> reporter: the vote came after passionate pleas from parents. >> stop short-changing the kids and overyou had coulding the students. >> reporter: every seat was filled in the auditorium as the school board reconsidered an earlier decision to close shannon elementary by next week. in 2009 they decided to close eight schools including shannon due to a budget deficit. but since then the school board president said closing two other schools saved some money. and while the closure of shannon would save about $325,000 a year, it would cost $1.5 million to relocate roughly 300 students. >> we said why are we doing

this? this is a redundant cost? and therefore we said put the brakes on. >> reporter: at the school this afternoon boxes were already packed for possible closure. >> this is how far it went. >> reporter: this teacher is worried about the impact on the students. >> it hurts me to see them not succeed. you see them start to grow. and then they move to another school. and then they drop down. >> reporter: but the fight to keep shannon open is far from over. tonight's vote will only keep the school open through next june. the state trustee who is overseeing the district's finances said she will not permit the school to stay open any longer than that. the parents say tonight's reprieve is reason for hope. >> this is like a bright light that maybe peck persuade you know the trustee to change her mind. >> the school hopes to get them to keep shannon hope for good. this is amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. it looks as if san jose is

laying off more police officers at the end of this month. the city and the san jose police officers's association says talks over pension reform broke down today t was hoped the two could reach some sort of agreement to save an additional 156 officers. state leaders had hoped to get a deal by immediate night so they could put the matter on the agenda so the city council could finalize its budget this month. with these new layoffs it means the city could lose a total of 287 officers. the city of san jose is currently facing a $115 million budget shortfall. there is word tonight state regulators have issued a fine for napa state hospital in connection with an attack on a therapist. they issued the almost $17,000 fine along with three citations against the psychiatric hospital including failure to correct unsafe work practices. 59-year-old george anderson was assaulted last december by a patient there. anderson suffered skull fractures and is now unable to

work. hayward police say they should have a better interpretation of data from a missing nursing student's phone by tomorrow morning. police say 26-year-old michelle lee's cell phone pinninged towers until mid-day saturday. she was last seen friday night heading towards a parking garage at kaiser medical center in hayward. security camera footage from the garage is also being examined. police say they consider the case a missing person investigation. >> we are holding out hope. we hold the same hope that the family was expressing to us last night. they are our driving force, the hope that they have. investigators say it could be two weeks before they get the information back on evidence processed from lee's car. >> severe storms brought at least one and possibly two tornadoes along with several funnel clouds to northern california late this afternoon. i want to show you amateur video of one of the tornadoes. kevin said he shot it at the north end of yuma city at 6:00

tonight. so far there are no reports of damage. there were also reports of funnel clouds across several counties including bute, sutter and yuma. these were not as powerful as last week which triggered tornadoes and extensive damage. the storms also died out as they moved into the sierra foothills. and into the sierra it may be june but you wouldn't know it from these pictures. highway 89 from squaw valley shortly after 7:00 this evening you can see that it did snow, although it didn't stick to the pavement. we just checked with caltrans and there are no chain requirements currently in effect. music moo music. >> we had our rain around here as well. the weather system with the severe weather up into the mountains. check this out, around the backside of that system right here, those showers wanting to move into the bay area late tonight, early tomorrow morning. a chance of sprinkles as we go forward. further out in the pacific, look how active this pacific pattern is. this looks like march not june.

. the man accused of beating giants fans bryan stow underwent a pal low graph to try to convince the police they have the wrong man. ken wayne is there with the family reaction. ken? >> reporter: julie, stow's sister tells me tonight that bryan stow is being weaken weaned off the last of four coma drugs here at san francisco general hospital. while the family focus has been on his recovery they can't help but hear the news coming out of la. 31-year-old ramirez was at la's old police headquarters parker center to undergo a polygraph. the second lie detector test in two days. one yesterday for his attorneys and one today for the police.

>> we think 100% our client is innocent. he didn't beat bryan stow and he wasn't at dodgers stadium. he has never been to dodgers stadium. >> both sides of the case have agreed not to disclose the results. but a former fbi polygraph expert, who administered yesterday's test said he asked some tough questions. >> did you assault bryan stow? did you beat bryan stow? >> a new wrinkle developed today with an la t.v. station reporting that ramirez is a suspect in a shooting in henderson, nevada last november. the henderson police department told ktvu tonight it could not confirm nor deny the report, only that it is still investigating. ramirez's attorneys say there are now 11 people who have alibis for him. they say the police are focusing on the wrong man. >> because that means if there is somebody out there, you know, who is smiling, we are trying to wipe that smile off that person's face. >> reporter: in scotts valley, bryan stow's sister said tonight by phone the family

hasn't been actively following the latest developments in the criminal case in la. >> we are trying not to. it's just so overwhelming already with bryan's medical condition without having to worry about if this guy is going to get off. >> reporter: stow could be off the coma medication by next week. the family continues to express its gratitude for all of the support its received. live in san francisco general hospital, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. supporters of oscar grant are saying they spend to protest on the day that former bart police officer mehserle is released from prison. they were giving out flyers to get the word out about the planned protest. last july mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in 2009. he received a two year sentence. but he could be free this month with credit for time served. oscar grant's uncle says he does not believe justice has

been served. >> we feel that mehserle is a threat to not just the family but the community. >> reporter: the attorney who has represented the grant family in a civil suit says the department of corrections is not legally bound to notify them of mehserle's release. the police say wheel rims might be the motive in last night's carjacking and kidnapping of a toddler. they told a gold colored buick from a 24-year-old man about 9:45 last night. it turns out a two and a half- year-old girl was in the backseat. police say about 40 minutes later the carjackers dumped the car near an apartment complex on springs road. a man who lives there says he heard a knock on his door and was shocked when he opened it to find a little girl with braids just stairing at him. he quickly called the police and the toddler was not hurt. in a south bay police in morgan hill are looking for whoever stoled a car with a one- month-old baby in the backseat yesterday afternoon. the mother kept the key in the ignition and the girl alone if

the backseat for just a moment when she went inside a morgan hill church. she returned to find her car and her baby gone. three hours later a hiker discovered the car and the child unharmed. you could be paying extra for online services. the state assembly passed a bill allowing them to collect taxes on some currently excluded with sales tax. it would force online retailers who advertise on websites based in california to collect and pay state sales taxes. amazon says it will end its advertising relationships with more than 10,000 california affiliates if that bill is passed. the bill is now going to the state senate. and the state senate today approved a measure that would allow individual counties to raise vehicle fees. the proposal allows the county board of supervisors to authorize a vote on higher fees for county residents. state senator mark leno from san francisco authored the bill which now goes to the assembly.

pg&e said today it is having more trouble tracking down documents on its gas lines demanded by state regulators. pg&e now says it won't be able to produce all of the records on welding defects in natural gas pipelines from the passed 55 years by the june 20th deadline. the california public utilities commission had asked for that as part of the investigation of the sanbruno pipeline explosion. >> some victims of that devastating explosion are facing another setback tonight. a financially strapped construction company has left them hanging. and as ktvu's ken pritchett reports, the contractor was on a list approved by pg&e. >> reporter: the owners of this home still wait. still wait to come home to a house fit to live in. it's been almost nine months since the sanbruno explosion. and now it seems they will wait longer. the owners here and four other properties were sent a letter that the company may go out of

business. >> that's tearing my heart out because people have work that needs to be done over. >> reporter: she hired them but parted ways quickly. >> we had a couple of misunderstandings and i thought i'm through. you know, i am not dealing with this anymore. >> reporter: she says she's concerned about her neighbors that have paid money to the company and may not be able to afford to hire another contractor. the neighbors say they were on a pg&e list of approved contractors. >> well, actually there was no list of approved contractors that pg&e distributed. >> pg&e says it did offer a list of contractors that homeowners could use which would directly bill pg&e for the work. but the utility says it was not recommending those contractors. pg&e says it has or will meet with those homeowners affected. >> we're reaching out to them and we're committed to making them whole at the end of this process. >> pg&e says it had no preferred list of contractors. this is what they handed out, an authorized list of

contractors, those that could bill pg&e directly. many neighbors see this as a recommendation. the company did not return our calls. in sanbruno, ktvu, channel 2 news. there is another contractor with a similar name in castro valley. the company is vanderbilt's family builders. we want to make it very clears it not connected in anyway with the situation in sanbruno. . tonight we have new surveillance video that shows a very calm and clever thief in action. he is called the blue tooth bandit. rob roth tells us one of his victims is a well known t.v. personality here in the bay area. >> police say t.v. personality was the first victim. >> i never would have thought that would happen to me because i am always so cautious. >> this is surveillance video taken at a restaurant in the

marina last july. he is sitting with a companion when a man sitting behind her pulls his chair close to hers. her purse is hanging off the back of her chair. >> i'm eating. and look, then he grabs the wallet. there he has it. and then he has like a napkin. >> then the man gets up and calmly walks out. police say less than an hour later this woman used the credit card at a san francisco safeway. >> it just frustrates me because there is a way to prevent it. you know, i felt like a victim. >> police sergeant mark marino. says the very next day he was videotaped at pete's frank coffee at franklin street. >> he has the wallet and he will move away. >> the suspect has a distinct walk. >> he is very pigeon-toed. >> he is very good at what he does. >> then last september he appears at a landmark john's

grim. he took the wallet from a woman with blond hair. later another woman used a credit card from this theft to withdraw $10,000 from a bank in sacramento. >> the accomplices are using the credit cards everywhere. >> she no longer drapes her purse over the back of her chair. >> now it is on my lap or on the table. >> police say it doesn't appear that the blue tooth bandit is confined to san francisco. similar crimes have been occurring throughout the bay area. in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu, channel 2 news. san raphael police hope surveillance video will lead them to a brazen armed robber. this video was taken inside a subway sandwich shop at the main square shopping center friday afternoon. the robber pulled out a semi- automatic handgun after ordering a sandwich. the clerk puts up her arms before emptying out the register. police say the man was chewing on a tooth pick during the robbery. >> the grandmother of a 4-month- old baby accused of kidnapping made her first court appearance today but did not enter a plea.

prosecutors say 58-year-old erica snuck into her son's house in nightson last month and took the baby while the family slept. police say she then took a cab to southern california where she lived and began telling people the baby was her own. she's charged with kidnapping and burglary. bail has been set at $5 million and she's due back in court next thursday. the federal aviation administration is getting tough on people who point lasers at aircraft which can temporarily blind the pilots. here is an example of that powerful beam from a laser when someone pointed one at news chopper ii. the faa today announced fines of up to $11,000. the bay area pilots reported more than 200 such incidents in the last year and a half. some pilots told ktvu today they support the heavy fine. you might say he became a digital detective when his laptop was stolen. how technology helped police catch a suspected thief. >> a new video of the military

. new video from ocean beach where just about 30 minutes ago the san francisco bomb squad detonated a military ordinance. the bomb squad dug a hole and then detonated it. here it is again in slow motion. the blast set off car alarms in the area. officers closed off part of the great highway to keep everyone safe. the bomb squad removed the ordinance from a house on christopher drive earlier tonight after a man who is renting that home discovered the moon illustrations. when the police couldn't help catch a computer thief an app did. ktvu's heather holmes is live

tonight in oakland with the story of how technology, social networking an online detective work stopped the thief in his tracks. heather? >> well, julie, they are getting nowhere with the police. joshua kaufman got an application on his computer that not only allowed him to locate his stolen laptop but also allowed him to receive pictures of the person using it. here are a few of them. a man seen in these incriminating photos last night he was arrested right here in jack listen done square. here he is curled up on a couch asleep propped up against pillows on a bed shirtless. buckled up in the deliver's seat of a car. and here he is standing in front of the camera at north county jail, arrested for possession of stolen property. >> however this technology definitely helped us solve this case. >> reporter: the technology is a theft tracking software called hidden. it costs $15 a year. it tracks the computer's location to within a quarter mile, snaps photos with the bolt-in web calm and monday

stores online activity. joshua kaufman had installed it on his mac book before someone broke into his apartment two months ago and stoled it. he reported the theft to police but wrote on his blog "they couldn't help me due to a lack of resources.." opd says the department has to prioritize the cases given the large caseloads. we have about 2400 theft reports coming through our system every single month. we have three theft investigators tasked with handling all of those. >> unwilling to throw up his hands in despair kaufman turned to internet. he posted the picks and yesterday it got the attention of oakland police. using evidence collected with the software which included an e-mail to a cab company where the suspect worked, the police last night arranged for a pick- up here on alice street. the man behind the wheel was the man behind the computer.

27-year-old aldabashi. redemption who blocked arrested. an oakland police officer just called me to let me know they arrested the man in my photos. another case of people not police tracking down their stolen property. and that alleged computer thief is expected to be arraigned tomorrow morning. reporting live here in oakland i'm heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. new data about old worries sent the stock market down sharply today. reports show employers added 38,000 jobs in may. a far cry from the 180,000 that were expected. that along with poor manufacturing numbers sent the dow tumbling 279 points. the nasdaq fell 66 points. ford sales were down 2% compared to last may. a sharp decline in truck sales wiped up the brisk selling of its smaller cars. gm says cutting sales to rental companies out weighed an increase of purchases by individual bares.

toyota is recalling more than 100,000prius all over the world. it is limited to first generation made before 2004. the automaker says a loose nut can result in a steering problem. the issue is suspected in causing at least one minor accident. the recall affects 52,000 cars in the united states. >> more severe weather struck today. it this time it was in new england. and four people are reported dead. in this video you can see the tornado forming over the connecticut river in springfield, massachusetts. the powerful winds picked up the debris and swirled it around. the officials say the tornadoes and the thunderstorms caused considerable damage. the governor of massachusetts declared a state of emergency and called out the national guard. and from devastated joplin, missouri, everyone reported missing following the may 22nd tornado is now accounted forment the death toll stands at 134. that number could still rise as

many people remain hospitalized with life threatening injuries. >> new york congressman anthony weaner today said he did not send what is described as a lewd photo over his twitter account. congressman weaner says someone hacked his twitter account and sent the picture to a 21-year- old woman in washington state. the photo allegedly shows a man's midsection wearing boxer shorts. weaner says such jokes are a part of his life. >> this seems like it was a prank to make fun of my name. when you are named weaner that happens a lot. i got 45,000 some odd twitter followers. hundreds of people that i follow. this seems like a prank that has gotten an enormous amount of attention. >> he has hired a law firm to investigate rather than use public funds. a sexual assault in some new york hotels. they spoke to hotel workers who say sexual harassment occurs more frequently than you might think. the executive staying in a new york hotel has now been accused

of sexually assaulting a housekeeper. this just weeks after the chief of the international monetary fund was arrested for attempted rape of a housekeeper in the hotel sofitel. both hotels now say they will arm room attend dents with panic buttons. >> anything that can prevent the incident, why not. >> the local 2 representatives clean some of san francisco's hotels for more than a decade. they say sexual harassment doesn't happen a lot but it does happen. >> and i opened the door, right, and the man was just standing there naked and told me come on in. come on it in. so then i closed the door immediately and i left. >> did you report your incident? >> no. >> like most room cleaners, chin was a new immigrant, fearful of losing her job. >> i mean, housekeepers or hotel worker when they get hired the first thing on the orientation is the guest is always right.

. in arizona firefighters lost containment of a major wildfire today. their biggest problem is a combination of swirling winds rough terrain. the horseshoe two fire now covers 72,000 acres along the state line with new mexico. it started a month ago and authorities say it was caused by humans. it is the fifth largest fire in arizona history. the obama administration today extended the deployment of national guard troops with the border of mexico for at

least another three months. some 1200 troops were sent to the barred border and their mission was to end at the end of june, this month. and, in fact, some had already started moving out. the white house asked congress for $30 million to keep them on the border. >> in san jose today, police went door-to-door telling residents that a registered sex offender is living in their community. officers say 61-year-old wayne allan page is living in the area near pain move. he spent time in prison for sexually violent crimes back in the 1970s. >> we want them to be familiar with his face, where he lives, where he may frequent so that they may not find themselves victims of a crime. >> police say page has lived in the area for about a year and was released from parole in february. they say they have not received any complaints about him since he moved there. >> in news of the world tonight, in libya a car bomb exploded today in the city

rebels are using as their capitol. it went off outside a hotel where diplomats and journalists stay. fortunately no one was injured. rebels blamed forces loyal to moammar gadhafi. and today moammar gadhafi lost his oil minister who defected to the rebel side. also today nato said they are extending their air campaign another 90 days. in bosnia, a mass grave was discovered today and it is believed to hold the remains of civilians killed during the war in the 1990s. families waited nearby hoping to see something familiar being recovered that would provide an answer to missing lefted one. the investigators say the remains may be victims of serbian general who was captured last week after 16 years on the run. and in germany health officials say the outbreak of e.coli is far worse than they initially thought. and the source is still a mystery. the number of cases is higher and this strain is particularly deadly. at least 17 people have died so far. people are being warned to avoid eating lettuce, raw

were found in two traps last month. the pest was first found in california in 2009. currently some 2,000-acres are under quarantine in northern and central california. [ music ] 8 >> we did have some wet weather this morning. drying out now. but more wet weather on the way. go to live stormtracker two and you can see the clouds coming down out of the north. the main system now is kind of here and it is moving off. but this wraparound stuff will slide in here tomorrow morning and it could bring us a few widely scattered showers. i will show you that in the computer model in a minute. as you look at tonight partly cloudy and cool out there. tomorrow don't get too freaked out about the showers. not a huge deal but a few spray sprinkles. in the mid-morning hours tomorrow afternoon plenty of sunshine. temperatures back into the upper 60s, low 70s. friday looks good and all goes south on saturday. so far a little bit of rain. with this next system out here as we head into the weekend

look at the first part of june. some rain is in the forecast right through the early part of next week. that doesn't mean it will be a wash-out each day but some rain in the forecast for the next three or four or five days. partly to mostly cloudy tomorrow as this system tries to clear outs. a chance for a trail morning sprinkle. tee up this next system for friday night and saturday. and this one is interesting because it sits offshore. the model will not be progressive or move to the east. just going to drop down like this and kind of bump up against the coast. that one could be trouble. because if it just sits here it could sit here for three or four days. basically a cut-off low. it wants to drop down here and hang out on saturday and sunday and eject until monday. you have to stay tuned on this one. tomorrow scatters showers in the morning. good in the afternoon. and as we get into friday showers in the evening. and the weekend we have to deal with this. here we go thursday morning showers i am talking about. then it kind of breaks down on thursday afternoon good. we get into friday afternoon, all right, not bad a few clouds

with the system out here comes out low. friday afternoon the low is set up offshore, right? there is friday amp. watch it bump up against the coast a little bit here on saturday morning. so going like this. it kind of bumps up and bumps back and bumps up. saturday morning does look wet. it pools away saturday at mid- morning. an interesting forecast. of course that's down the road. some things could change. the bottom line is saturday and sunday look un settled for sure. friday probably two of the nicer days we have seen this week. the forecast highs for tomorrow back up into the upper 60s. find low 70s. the five day forecast doesn't look like the first day of summer at all, does it? >> no. >> upper 60s and you expect 80s this time of year. >> a lot of rain. >> but tomorrow may be a sprinkle and then not too bad. >> thanks, bill. >> thank you, bill. tourists looking to ride one of san francisco's iconic cable cars had to take a bus today instead. the turnaround sat empty because all three cable car lines are currently down for scheduled construction and

. well, it was a long game but turned out just fine. mark here to tell us about the giants. >> it has been a weird season and it is just june 1st. it is ex aspirating at times but never dull. tonight it was all of that jumbled into one. 11 inning victory come out of it going, hey, whatever works. in st. louis they have won 2-3. items lincecum a little shaky. giants down 3-0 early. they tie it in the 6th. andre torres with a slice down the right-field line. he has got himself a double. the giants have themselves a tie ball game. now aubrey huff in a 6-38 slump finally hammers one. a solo homerun just the fifth and the giants lead it 4-3. the cardinals get to lincecum for two. by the way he gave up ten hits tonight tying a career high. in the 9th two out. nate comes through big time.
